NXT Melbourne, FL, live results: Mike Kanellis returns

Additional notes by Bryan Rose

Here are the results from tonight’s NXT event in Melbourne, Florida. The estimated attendance was around 300 people.

This is Kanellis’ first match in WWE since requesting his release back on October 14th. This was shortly after he signed a five-year deal to remain with the company.

The card also features the return of Kacy Catanzaro in singles action. She made her return to NXT this Wednesday, appearing in a battle royal to determine Rhea Ripley’s next challenger for the NXT Women’s title. That battle royal was eventually won by Bianca Belair.

The main event had Kona Reeves taking on Keith Lee. Here are the full results:

  • Catalina defeated Marina Shafir
  • Jaxson Ryker defeated Cal Bloom
  • Cameron Grimes defeated Babatunde
  • Mike Kanellis and Tony Nese defeated Nick Ogarelli and Mohamed
  • Chelsea Green defeated Kayden Carter
  • Austin Theory defeated Dorian Mak
  • Shane Thorne defeated Daniel Vidot
  • Kacy Catanzaro defeated Vanessa Borne
  • Keith Lee defeated Kona Reeves

Kacy Catanzaro returns in NXT battle royal

Following months of uncertainty about her status with WWE, Kacy Catanzaro returned on this week’s NXT.

Catanzaro was a surprise entrant in Wednesday’s battle royal for an NXT Women’s title shot at TakeOver: Portland. She was eliminated by a dropkick from Io Shirai.

Bianca Belair won the number one contender’s battle royal and will challenge either Rhea Ripley or Toni Storm for the NXT Women’s Championship at TakeOver: Portland.

After it was reported that Catanzaro was finished with WWE, Ricochet spoke to Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso about her status in September:

Barrasso: There was a report earlier in the week that Kacy Catanzaro handed in her notice to WWE. You and Kacy are best friends and dating. Can you share an update on whether Kacy is still with WWE?

Ricochet: She’s still with the company. She’s not retired at all and she’s not injured. It’s a tough sport and we’re all hurting, but there is nothing wrong with her.

Barrasso: Will she wrestle again?

Ricochet: I don’t know. She’s very family-oriented and she wants kids, so she doesn’t know if being on the road so much is for her. For me, I’m already too deep — I’m on the road all the time. She loves wrestling and she loves it here, and she’s so good at it, so it’s a very tough decision for her.

Dave Meltzer wrote about Catanzaro last month: “Kacy Catanzaro remains under contract. Nothing much else has been said. She’s not around and the speculation was she may come back in 2020.”

Catanzaro, who was a star on American Ninja Warrior, reported to the WWE Performance Center in January 2018. She made it to the second round of the Mae Young Classic that year and also was an entrant in the 2019 women’s Royal Rumble match. Her most recent match before tonight was at an NXT house show in July.

NXT Venice, FL, live results: Ricochet teams with Kacy Catanzaro

Submitted by Louis Izzo

– The Street Profits (Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins) defeated Kassius Ohno & Dominik Dijakovic

Good opener. Ohno and Dijakovic teased a heel role, but it turned out to be a babyface vs. babyface match. Ford pinned Dijakovic after hitting a frog splash.

– Reina Gonzalez defeated Xia Li

Short match. Gonzalez won with a lariat.

– War Raiders (Hanson & Rowe) defeated The Mighty (Shane Thorne & Nick Miller)

War Raiders mostly dominated this match, with The Mighty playing off them well. War Raiders were probably the second most popular act on the show, only behind Ricochet.

– Dan Matha defeated Jeet Rama

Matha cut a heel promo before the match and challenged an international member of the roster. They had a very basic, and thankfully short, match. Matha won with a delayed suplex that looked like it was intended to be a jackhammer.

– Io Shirai & Dakota Kai defeated Bianca Belair & Lacey Evans

Decent but uneventful. Shirai pinned Evans with a moonsault.

– Keith Lee defeated Kona Reeves

Reeves still works the same match he did before the gimmick change. There was lots of playing to the crowd, and Lee won with his fireman’s carry into a powerslam.

– Raul Mendoza defeated Mansoor

They had a sloppy match, but it was decent. Mendoza won with a fisherman buster.

– NXT North American Champion Ricochet & Kacy Catanzaro defeated Velveteen Dream & Vanessa Borne

Good match, but the restrictions of the mixed tag rules made some false tag spots meaningless. Ricochet took out Dream on the floor with a plancha and assisted Catanzaro on a Sliced Bread #2 for the win.

NXT Cocoa, FL, live results: Horsewomen vs. Shirai & Catanzaro

Last night’s estimated attendance: 200 people.

– Brennan Williams defeated Jeet Rama

– Keith Lee defeated Fabian Aichner

– Babatunde Aiyegbusi defeated Rocky

– Marina Shafir & Jessamyn Duke defeated Kacy Catanzaro & Io Shirai

– Danny Burch & Oney Lorcan defeated Raul Mendoza & Humberto Carrillo

Io Shirai, three more confirmed for WWE Mae Young Classic

With four more wrestlers being announced today, the lineup for this year’s Mae Young Classic continues to take shape.

As expected, Io Shirai will be one of the participants in the tournament. After it was reported that she was signing with WWE, Shirai departed Stardom in June and then made an appearance at a WWE house show in Tokyo, Japan, where it was announced that she would be joining NXT this summer.

Shirai finished 10th in the “Most Outstanding” category in last year’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter awards.

Nicole Matthews, an indie wrestler from Canada who was an alternate for the first Mae Young Classic, will be an entrant this year. She began her in-ring career in 2006 and has long been a regular for Shimmer in the United States and ECCW in Canada.

Jinny, who recently signed a United Kingdom-brand contract with WWE, will also be taking part in the Mae Young Classic. She’s PROGRESS Wrestling’s current Women’s Champion.

Rounding out today’s announcements, former “American Ninja Warrior” standout Kacy Catanzaro has been confirmed for the tournament. She made her debut at an NXT house show in April after signing with WWE in 2017 and reporting to the Performance Center this January.

Kaitlyn, Rhea Ripley, Shirai, Matthews, Jinny, and Catanzaro are the first six wrestlers to be announced for the tournament, which will be taped at Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida on August 8 and 9. There will be 32 participants in total.
