A combination of timing, fan support, and strong performances have come together to make Kofi Kingston the unlikely star of WrestleMania season.

It was only a few weeks ago where this seemed completely implausible. Kingston wasn’t even originally supposed to be in the WWE Championship match at Elimination Chamber. He was on the outside looking in, with Daniel Bryan, AJ Styles, Randy Orton, Samoa Joe, Mustafa Ali, and Jeff Hardy set to take part in the match.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight with Wrestling Observer radio talking Raw, New Japan Cup, Kurt Angle, Bellas, Being the Elite, Mania main event and taking your e-mail questions to [email protected].

WWE has gotten a lot of pub regarding announcing the Ronda Rousey vs. Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair match is going to be the main event for WrestleMania. It came down to that match and Brock Lesnar vs. Seth Rollins, and the women’s match should have headlined. Plus, announcing it in advance gives the show more publicity than waiting until the last week. So it all makes sense. All three women are going to ESPN tomorrow for the 7:45 a.m. edition of Sports Center. Roman Reigns will be on First Take at 11 a.m.

For the NJPW/ROH Madison Square Garden show, the show is now starting at 6:15 p.m. with a Stardom tag team match, followed by the Rumble at 6:30 and Jeff Cobb vs. Will Ospreay starts the ten match main card at 7:30 p.m. The women’s match will not be streamed or on PPV.

Flip Gordon noted that when he woke up this morning, his knee locked up. He was scheduled to return to the ring on Sunday in Baltimore. Right now ROH is awaiting an update on his situation.

Tommy Dreamer’s House of Hardcore will be in a video game called RetroMania Wrestling. The game is being called the spiritual successor of the 1991 WWE arcade game Wrestle Fest and the roster features Dreamer, the Road Warriors, Zack Sabre Jr., and Austin Idol.

Tommy Dreamer: Big Cass ‘doing well’ after suffering seizure

After Big Cass suffered an apparent seizure at last night’s House of Hardcore show, Tommy Dreamer posted a brief update on his condition today.

Dreamer tweeted: “Spoke to @BigCassWWE today He is doing well.”

Cass didn’t wrestle at last night’s show at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania but was scheduled to be part of the event after intermission. Xfinity’s David Onda tweeted: “That was scary. It was intermission at the show, the lobby was packed with people checking out the merch tables. Cass went right down into his face. Fans immediately stepped back to give him room. Doc was called. Kind of chaotic. Dreamer was right by his side.”

Dreamer addressed the crowd about the situation. He asked the fans to say a prayer for Cass and said that Cass had suffered a seizure. Dreamer stressed that it wasn’t a drug-related matter and that he was with Cass all day. Cass was responsive after the seizure but was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Big Cass suffers apparent seizure at House of Hardcore show

Big Cass suffered what appeared to be a seizure during tonight’s House of Hardcore event.

David Onda of Xfinity, who was at the event, tweeted that Cass was in the arena lobby when he collapsed, landing right on his face. Fans stood back as a doctor was called and tended to him. Tommy Dreamer and Bully Ray were by his side as it all happened.

Onda later tweeted that Cass was loaded into an ambulance and taken to a hospital. Cass was said to be responsive after the incident occurred.

Dreamer later addressed the crowd about the situation, saying that Cass had suffered a seizure. He also made sure to point out that it was not a drug-related matter.

Cass was scheduled to be a part of the show following the intermission. He made his debut for the promotion back on 12/1 in a losing effort against MVP. He’s continued to wrestle on the independent scene since his release from WWE back in June.

WWE allows the Hardys to wrestle at House of Hardcore last night

Although it was in a fairly limited fashion, The Hardys ended up wrestling at last night’s House of Hardcore show in Philadelphia after all.

The Hardys took on Tommy Dreamer & Bully Ray as was scheduled, but there were seemingly a lot of hoops to clear before the match could take place. Dreamer cut a post-match promo detailing some of them, saying that if it wasn’t for WWE contacting him earlier in the day that the match wouldn’t have happened.

Dave Meltzer reported yesterday after Matt Hardy appeared but didn’t wrestle at the House of Hardcore show the night prior that WWE had allowed the Hardys to fulfill some independent dates that they had booked prior to returning, though the company insisted that no physicality was to be involved.

The match they wrestled in was fairly tame. The teams brawled for the first few minutes until the Spirit Squad interfered and were put through a table, with the Hardys winning immediately after that.

Dreamer referenced a situation where Ring of Honor and Joe Koff pulled strings to help them even though it didn’t come together. Meltzer noted yesterday that Dreamer was looking for main event-caliber replacements for the Hardys before WWE allowed them to work the show.

Matt Hardy appears, doesn’t wrestle at House of Hardcore last night

Matt Hardy did not wrestle at the House of Hardcore show last night in Metuchen, New Jersey. Hardy was scheduled to face Tommy Dreamer in the main event, but that was changed to Dreamer & Bully Ray vs. The Spirit Squad. The Sami Callihan vs. Bully Ray match was also changed to Callihan vs. Bobby Fish.

The WWE allowed the Hardys to fulfill some dates they agreed upon, although at first they were told they couldn’t, but WWE insisted on no physicality for them at any of the shows, so they will likely be at the House of Hardcore show in Philadelphia tonight but unable to do any semblance of a main event match.

The Hardys vs. Dreamer & Bully Ray was originally set to be the main event at the 2300 Arena. Dreamer was looking to get some major surprise main event replacements for them.

Nothing was announced about Matt Hardy not wrestling at the start of last night’s show. Dreamer did announce at the start that Matt Riddle had double-booked himself and wouldn’t be appearing. Riddle worked for PWG last night and then flew to New York to work for EVOLVE tonight.

Weekend indies & overseas wrestling notes: House of Hardcore, OTT, WrestleCircus

Over in Belfast, Ireland, Sunday, Marty Scurll and Ricochet hooked it up in the main event of OTT’s Invasion: Belfast show, the promotion’s second of two weekend events.

While Scurll picked up the win by submitting Ricochet, the highlight of OTT’s weekend was former WWE Universal Champion Finn Balor making a surprise appearance at Saturday’s show, sporting a sweet beard.

The promotion returns to Belfast on Sunday, February 5th with Mark Andrew, Eddie Kingston, and more.

WrestleCircus ran a show Saturday in Austin, TX, in front of around 500 people according to reader Steve Conway. The promotion is relatively new with just a handful of shows, but they loaded up their lineup this past weekend. Here’s a few highlights with notes from Steve:

– Lance Hoyt b Adam Page in a really good opener.

– Rachel Ellering b Christi Jaynes

– Sammy Guevara b Colt Cabana

– Jade b Joey Ryan in a no DQ match

Leva Bates interfered cosplaying Shinsuke Nakamura. Entertaining with Joey doing his usual intergender schtick. Crowd liked it a lot, especially the finish where the lollipop ended up in a place Joey definitely didn’t want it.

– ACH b Chris Hero

Another match the crowd loved and was really into from the start. Hero played a subtle heel well. Excellent match.

– Donovan Dijak b. Tessa Blanchard

This was not good. A lot of missed spots and the intergender stuff was pretty pointless. This wasn’t comedy, but we’d also already seen the “big v small” spots with other matches, so this brought nothing new to the table.

– Michael Elgin b Jeff Cobb

Crowd wasn’t into this. It was disappointing in they just did forearms, versions of power German suplexes and clotheslines endlessly. They hit the forearms hard and both are really strong, but again we’d seen everything they did already with Lee/Rowe/Dijak. This had very little creativity and very little heat. To be fair, the show was going on five hours by this point.

– Ethan Carter III b Pentagon Jr.

Bad main event for the “Ringmaster” championship. The crowd was very happy to see Pentagon, but EC3 did this thing with a Jame Ellsworth ripoff called the “Trashman” where EC3’s handpicked opponent from the last show came out and interfered. Crowd was more annoyed by it than anything else. Second show in a row EC3 was champ and did virtually nothing. This was a really flat ending to the marathon.

**********

Tommy Dreamer’s House of Hardcore ran Friday from Philadelphia, PA, delayed by nearly an hour on FloSlam due to some technical issues. Here’s some notes from reader Daniel Kelly who was in attendance:

– Alex Reynolds vs Brooklyn Brawler

Brawler came out and talked about how great it was to be in Philadelphia and what an honor it was to perform in the original ECW arena. He then proceeded to take off his Yankee Jersey and reveal a Flyers jersey under, stating that for one night only he would be the “Broad Street Brawler.” Quick 2-3 min match with Brawler making Reynolds tap with a Boston Crab.

– Lio Rush vs Tony Nese

This was Nese’s last indie show before heading to WWE. Great back and forth match displaying both competitors’  athleticism. Rush continued on with his black heart gimmick that he has been doing as of late. Crowd very over for Nese, hitting him with the streamer show upon entering the ring. Exciting match with a lot of high spots throughout. Nese got the win with his pump handle driver.

After the match, Nese credited Rush and shook his hand. Nese then gave credit to Striker, Reynolds, Bull James, and Dan Barry who joined him in the ring after. Ended with Reynolds hitting a superkick on Nese after embracing and telling him WWE “settled for Marty when they could have had Shawn”.

– Colt Cabana vs Moose

Entertaining back and forth match. Moose able to show his athleticism, executing two moonsaults both from the top and middle ropes. Cabana still looks great and hasn’t skipped a beat in the ring. Crowd split between both competitors, but arena filled with Moose chants throughout. Moose got the victory hitting a playmaker.

– Brian Cage vs Sami Callihan

This was a return match from a previous engagement these two had in HOH. I was in attendance for the first contest which did not disappoint, nor did this one. For some reason, the crowd was not nearly as loud as in the previous matches. Great back and forth action with Cage able to display his freakish strength. A lot of out of the ring work with Callihan executing dives to the outside and utilizing the guard rails quite a bit. Near falls throughout with Cage landing clotheslines and Callihan hitting pump kicks.

Cage hit Callihan with a Weapon-X at one point which resulted in a close near fall. End of the match came with Callihan reversing Cage into a code red which he kicked out of into a stretch muffler. Cage taps to give Sami the victory. After the match Cage tells Callihan it’s 1-1 and extends his hand. Callihan proceeds to kick it away to an ovation.

– Fenix vs John Hennigan

Crowd was over for this one from the moment Fenix walked out. Match began with both Fenix and Hennigan playing the babyface role and competing with one another for crowd reaction. Both competitors did a tight rope walk from corner to corner, with Hennigan crotching himself on the top rope. Lucha chants throughout the match with back and forth action.

Only took a matter of minutes for Hennigan to go heel after getting shown up. Many highspots off the top with Fenix hitting springboard hurricanranas. Closely contested match that saw Hennigan pick up the victory with the End of the World. Great match that the crowd was really into. Both competitors embraced afterwards.

– Matt Hardy vs Tommy Dreamer cage match

Match started with Matt stating “Tommy’s dreamer I knew you’d come” only to get pulled to the outside. Had about a solid five minutes of out of ring action before heading into the cage. Both competitors took bumps on the outside and multiple guard rail spots. Once in the cage, Tommy took majority of the offensive. Some back and forth until Dreamer was able to hit a DVD. Dreamer goes for the cage door, only to have it slammed on his head by the licensed official. Sandman’s music hits, as per usual with an HOH show, as he hits the ring to cane the official, followed up by one to Hardy as he tries to leave the cage.

Another DVD by Dreamer to a near fall. Crowd goes absolutely insane as out of nowhere Brother Nero hits the ring to cane Sandman and throw him into the side of the cage. Jeff then enters the cage and produces a bag of tacks. Jeff attempts a twist of fate but gets reversed and set up for a DVD. Matt hits Dreamer in the head with a cane and follows it up with a side effect on the tacks for the victory. Short match that was saved by the appearance of Jeff.

After the match, the crowd begins a “swanton bomb” chant directed towards Jeff. Hardy teases taking off his jacket and heading to the top, however is reprimanded by Matt for his thoughts on turning back into a spot monkey. Jeff proceeds to flip off the crowd to much dismay. Show ends with the Hardys grabbing the licensed official and dragging him to the back.

The promotion also ran Saturday in Joppa, MD. Here’s the quick results:

Jessicka Haovk def. Taya; Eddie Kingston def. Lance Anoa’i; Matt Stryker/Conor Braxton/Kikutaro def. Vik Dalishus/Benjamin Boone/Hale Collins; Moose def. Brian Cage; Alex Reynolds def. Sonjay Dutt/Dan Barry/Brandon Scott; Tommy Dreamer/Sandman def. Spirit Squad (Kenny/Mikey): Fenix def. John Hennigan.

House of Hardcore Melbourne, Australia, results: Tommy Dreamer; Mickie James vs. Victoria

Submitted by Russ Wilkinson

The show opened with Tommy Dreamer welcoming the crowd and thanking everyone for coming. He was interrupted by Muhammed Ali Vaez who wanted a match with Dreamer. He declined and introduced the surprise guest of Hurricane Helms which had a huge reaction and led to a match.

– Hurricane Helms vs. Muhammed Ali Vaez

Decent opening match with a lot of comedy spots. The crowd was doing the Sesame Street Count’s “Ha ha ha” after every near fall, something that occurred sporadically throughout the night. After about 10 minutes, Hurricane won with the chokeslam.

– Syd Parker vs Adam Brooks

This was the match of the night. Parker came out in green face paint with a Mohawk which led to one fan chanting ‘Sheamus’ very loudly for most of the match. Very hard hitting contest with several great spots, turnbuckle suplexes, double stomp from the top rope and a ton of near falls leading to the first “This is awesome” chant. Match ended with the referee turning from the action to tie his shoe, and Parker used green mist on Brooks to set up a double arm ddt for the win.

– The Estate (Cousin Ali, Emanuelle, Gabriel Wolfe, Slade Mercer) vs JXT, Dowie James, Mike Burr, Josh Shooter and Mr Juicy

Fun 10 man tag that was done under lucha like rules with no tags and competitors coming in and out of the ring as one was knocked out. Both teams cleared the ring with by doing multiple uppercuts and splashes in the corners which led to everyone diving one by one from the top rope to the outside. Once the chaos settled down, JXT and Dowie gained control, leading to a german suplex top rope splash combo for the win.

– Bull James (the former Bull Dempsey) vs Mark Silva

Very typical big man match. The crowd got the most out of doing the Bull ShiI chant for his entrance and the same fan who was chanting ‘Sheamus’ earlier was trying to get noticed by Silva by chanting his real last name ‘Commetti’ as his dad is a popular sports commentator in Australia. Neither guy was able to knock the other down until Silva did a variation of the world’s strongest slam on James which was fairly impressive for the win.

– OCW Champion Maddog vs. Cletus Blood

The crowd was really hot for both competitors but more so for Cletus who was smaller and plays an underdog character. Match opened with some basic wrestling which devolved into a brawl. Major spot was a huge super frankensteiner by Cletus with both competitors standing on the top rope in the corner. Once they recovered, Maddog grabbed a chair and lighter fluid, and lit the chair on fire but was countered by Cletus who hit Maddog with the chair.

Maddog recovered by hitting him with a flaming elbow (a piece of material on his elbow caught on fire) and then the flame moved onto a patch on his leg so he hit a flaming leg drop off the top rope. The crowd was very hot for this segment (pardon the pun). Cletus kicked out and made a comeback and getting a roll up for the win and becoming the new OCW champion.

– Mickie James vs Victoria

Decent women’s match with both women playing to the crowd by using their sex appeal (ie. Grabbing their breasts, James winking before clamping on the Last Chancery). Victoria went to hit a standing moonsault and appeared to hurt her leg. It all ended up being part of the show as she hit Mickie from behind. The match ended with James getting the win and Victoria, upset with the referee, hit the Widow’s Peak on the ref after a second attempt as her hands slipped and the ref fell forward the first time.

– Hardcore Match: Tommy Dreamer vs Andy Phoenix vs Krackerjack vs Carlito

Big reactions to start the match for Carlito and Dreamer then a chant for Krackerjack once the match was underway. Andy and Krackerjack squared off with some arm wringing and Tommy and Carlito went to do the same but Carlito ducked out of the ring to start. The match very quickly became a plunder match with each competitor grabbing a weapon: Andy with a chair, Tommy with a cane, Krackerjack with a stapler and Carlito with an apple.

Tommy attacked Andy with the cane and was blocked with the chair, and then Andy went to hit Carlito and he spit the apple in Andy’s face. Krackerjack went to use the stapler and it was reversed and he was stapled himself, then fell out of the ring. When he came back, his face was covered in blood. Dreamer grabbed a ladder and they did several spots in the corner with everyone being run into the ladder.

The match ended with Dreamer being crotched on the ladder laid across the middle rope and Carlito hitting the backstabber from that position for the win. Carlito is the number one contender for the OCW title.

Other Notes:

– MVP and Magnus were unable to gain entry visas to Australia so were unable to attend the show.

– The title match was originally scheduled as a ladder match but the ceiling was too low to stand on top of a ladder.
