The Rock to adapt ‘Fighting With My Family’ into a stage musical

Years after the film’s release, The Rock is now set to adapt ‘Fighting With My Family’ into a stage musical.

In a report shared by The Hollywood Reporter, it was noted that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will team up with Stephen Merchant to adapt the life of WWE Superstar Paige into a stage musical. The original film was released in 2019, with British actress Florence Pugh playing Paige.

Directed by Merchant and produced by Johnson’s Seven Bucks Production, Merchant recently revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he always considered the film a musical. “A young woman from the ‘chorus line’ fighting to get her big break, surrounded by theatrical, larger-than-life characters and huge sweeping emotions. I approached each wrestling match like it was a different dance number, building to a big show-stopping finale. Seeing the film reimagined for the stage feels like the natural next step.”

Fighting With My Family is exceptionally well-suited for the stage. It’s packed with personal emotion expressed through the dynamic world of wrestling, which has always been about storytelling and connecting with a live audience. Working with Stephen Merchant on the film was a truly special experience, and his brilliant work deserves this new act. As it comes to life musically, I have no doubt it will be an absolute blast for theatergoers,” Johnson added.

The 53-year-old Johnson is next set to star in Jumanji 3 and the live-action version of Moana.

VIDEO: The Rock attempts to call CM Punk after Raw

With Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson at Raw for the filming of scenes for “Fighting with My Family,” there was naturally speculation that Johnson would make a surprise appearance on television.

That didn’t happen, but Johnson did appear twice in front of the live crowd at the Staples Center. He got on the mic before Raw went on the air, with Vince McMahon even leading him off stage at the end of the segment.

Johnson came back after the conclusion of the show and before the filming of a scene where Paige (played by Florence Pugh and with Tessa Blanchard as a stunt double) wins the Divas Championship for the movie based on Paige and her family’s life that Johnson’s production company has partnered with WWE Studios and others on.

The presence of the fictional AJ Lee (played by Thea Trinidad) for the scene inspired the Los Angeles audience to chant for CM Punk, which led to Johnson attempting to call Punk. The two ultimately weren’t able to find a connection, but Punk did tweet a thank you to the crowd after Johnson left a voicemail.

Punk also offered the explanation that it was his dog’s birthday for why he didn’t answer the call.

The Rock at Raw for filming of ‘Fighting with My Family’

Besides the live Raw tonight, there will also be scenes shot for the movie “Fighting with My Family” at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

They’ll be shooting the in-ring wrestling scenes with the lead characters.

The movie is based on the Bevis family in England, which includes father, wrestler and promoter Ricky Knight, mother Sweet Saraya Knight, as well as Paige and her brothers. The movie, a comedy, likely builds to Paige, played by Florence Pugh, going after the Divas champion, who is played by former TNA wrestler Thea Trinidad. While we don’t know this, it would make sense that scenes for a match between them would be shot tonight.

Dwayne Johnson is hands on with the making of the movie and will be at the Staples Center. It would make it very easy for him to appear on Raw although it has not been confirmed that he will be.

Johnson tweeted that they would be filming Pugh’s “big scene” after Raw goes off the air.
