AEW returning to Las Vegas for Double or Nothing 2020

For the second straight year, AEW Double or Nothing will take place in Las Vegas over Memorial Day weekend.

It was announced via Sports Illustrated today that the MGM Grand Garden Arena will host this year’s Double or Nothing pay-per-view on Saturday, May 23. Tickets will go on sale on Friday, February 14.

Double or Nothing 2019 was the first show in AEW history. It also took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

“It’s been an incredible run, and only fitting that we return to Las Vegas to celebrate our one year anniversary with AEW’s marquee event,” AEW president and CEO Tony Khan told Sports Illustrated. “On Saturday, May 23, Double or Nothing is back for round two at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Last year’s event changed the world of wrestling, and this year the stakes will be even higher.”

June 3, 2019 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Double or Nothing review

All Elite Wrestling, who with the talent, television deal and financial backing is already, after just one show, the hottest non-WWE force in the U.S. pro wrestling business in more than 20 years, debuted on 5/25 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

The show taught a lot of things, from the value of social media to the dissatisfaction with WWE. The show had one of the best atmospheres you could have for a wrestling show, and given the talent and line-up, a strong in-ring product was guaranteed.

The show was a major success, but in many ways, that’s been a lock since February when they sold almost all of their 11,000 tickets in a pre-sale in less than 30 minutes, and the few held back were sold in four minutes the next day.

The show, as far as interest level, was far bigger than its predecessor, All In. All In was one of the historically most important shows ever in U.S. when it comes to landscape changing. And this show, as the first show of the AEW promotion, may be a significant part of long-term wrestling history.

Figure Four Weekly: Thoughts on AEW Double or Nothing

If it wasn’t already clear, the success of All Elite Wrestling’s Double or Nothing has solidified one thing: the remainder of 2019 is going to be a great time for the professional wrestling industry and its fans.

AEW’s maiden voyage had a lot of hype to live up to. There’s always difficulty when something transforms from an idea to a fully-formed product, complete with its own issues and imperfections. And while Double or Nothing wasn’t perfect, it managed to exceed reasonable expectations.

Similar to All In, Double or Nothing was a variety show that had high-level wrestling of all types. But most importantly, it left viewers wanting to see what’s next and built momentum for when AEW gets on TNT later this year.

That was achieved by the former Dean Ambrose making a surprise appearance at the end of Double or Nothing.

VIDEO: Being the Elite ‘Backstage at Double or Nothing’

Being the Elite has released their first episode since Double or Nothing.

The episode covers Double or Nothing weekend in Las Vegas and the show itself, including the surprise appearance of Jon Moxley. Being the Elite begins with Moxley right before he appears in front of the crowd and ends with him teasing a future match against Joey Janela.

It was announced after Double or Nothing that Moxley has signed a full-time, multi-year deal with AEW. He’ll make his in-ring debut for the promotion at Fyter Fest in Daytona Beach, Florida on Saturday, June 29.

Moxley is also coming to NJPW and has been announced for five Northeast Wrestling shows this summer.

This week’s Being the Elite includes an appearance by Flip Gordon, who was a regular on the show before The Young Bucks, Cody Rhodes, and Hangman Page departed ROH. Gordon signed a two-year deal with ROH in 2018.

Today’s Being the Elite is available to watch below:

AEW determines top two World Championship contenders

Though it doesn’t have a date or a location yet, we now know what All Elite Wrestling’s first World Championship match will be.

Chris Jericho and Hangman Page were set up as the two top contenders to the AEW World title at Double or Nothing tonight. Jericho defeated Kenny Omega in the main event, while Page won the Casino Battle Royale on the pre-show.

AEW announced earlier this week that the Jericho vs. Omega winner would face the Casino Battle Royale winner at a later date to determine their first World Champion.

Page had originally been scheduled to face PAC at Double or Nothing, but their match was canceled and instead took place for Wrestle Gate Pro in Nottingham, England last weekend. PAC got himself disqualified, then attacked Page’s leg in a post-match angle.

The AEW World Championship belt was also unveiled tonight, with Bret Hart making an appearance and showing off the title.

Jon Moxley appears at Double or Nothing, signs with AEW

UPDATE: Jon Moxley has signed a multi-year deal with AEW.

The former Dean Ambrose has joined All Elite Wrestling.

Jon Moxley made a surprise appearance at the end of tonight’s Double or Nothing pay-per-view. After the show, AEW tweeted out a graphic officially announcing that Moxley is All Elite.

Moxley’s appearance came after Chris Jericho defeated Kenny Omega in the main event. As Jericho was cutting a promo demanding to be thanked by AEW and the fans, Moxley came out through the crowd. He laid out Jericho with Dirty Deeds, then hit Dirty Deeds on the referee as well.

Omega brawled with Moxley after fighting out of Dirty Deeds. They fought through the crowd and to the stage, where AEW had a prop of oversized poker chips set up. Moxley hit Dirty Deeds on the poker chips and then slammed Omega off of them.

After WWE confirmed in January that Moxley would be leaving the company when his contract expired in April, Moxley had his last WWE match at “The Shield’s Final Chapter” on April 21. He teamed with Roman Reigns & Seth Rollins against Drew McIntyre, Bobby Lashley & Baron Corbin.

On May 1, Moxley released a video hyping his return to this persona.

Bret Hart unveils AEW World title belt at Double or Nothing

Bret Hart made an appearance at All Elite Wrestling’s debut show and unveiled the promotion’s World Championship title.

Hart took part in an in-ring segment at Double or Nothing where he showed off the title belt:

Hart introduced Hangman Page, who became one of the top two challengers to the title by winning the Casino Battle Royale on the Double or Nothing pre-show. Page last eliminated MJF to win the battle royal.

Before the title was unveiled, MJF came out and insulted Hart and Page. The segment led to Jungle Boy and Jimmy Havoc stopping MJF as he tried to leave. MJF tried to punch Jungle Boy, but Jungle Boy blocked it. Jungle Boy and Havoc both struck MJF. Page then threw MJF into the crowd, and Jungle Boy and Havoc followed him.

Page will face Chris Jericho at a later date to decide the first AEW World Champion, though when that match will be taking place hasn’t been announced.

Hangman Page wins AEW Casino Battle Royale

In the opener of tonight’s Double or Nothing pre-show, Hangman Page became the winner of the first match in All Elite Wrestling history.

After entering as the 21st and final entrant, Page last eliminated MJF to win the Casino Battle Royale. Page is now one of the top contenders for the AEW World Championship. He’ll face the winner of tonight’s Kenny Omega vs. Chris Jericho match at a later date to decide the first champion.

AEW hasn’t announced when that title match will be taking place.

Page was originally supposed to face PAC tonight, but their match was canceled due to creative differences. They instead faced each other for Wrestle Gate Pro in Nottingham, England last weekend. PAC got himself disqualified and then attacked Page’s leg in a post-match angle. AEW claimed that Page wouldn’t be able to wrestle at Double or Nothing because of it.

MJF, Brandon Cutler, Michael Nakazawa, Dustin Thomas, and Sunny Daze were the first five wrestlers in the Casino Battle Royale. Shawn Spears (formerly Tye Dillinger in WWE), Joey Janela, Jimmy Havoc, Isiah Kassidy, and Brian Pillman Jr. were next, then Billy Gunn, Glacier, Jungle Boy, Ace Romero, and Marq Quen came in.

Wrestling Weekly: Ashley Massaro thoughts, Double or Nothing preview

On the new Wrestling Weekly, famed wrestling trainer and former wrestler Les Thatcher and yours truly discuss the Ashley Massaro story, AEW’s Double or Nothing, and TV networks pitching ideas to wrestling companies.

We discuss aspects of the stories that have come out since Massaro’s passing that haven’t been talked as much as some of the others, some concerns regarding AEW, Saturday’s Double or Nothing, and just how common it is (or isn’t) for the TV network airing a wrestling show to pitch ideas to the wrestling company on their station.

May 27, 2019 Observer Newsletter: Death of Ashley Massaro, Double or Nothing preview

Ashley Massaro, the winner of the 2005 WWE Diva Search, passed away on 5/16 after hanging herself.

Massaro, who had battled depression for years, was 39. In a 2017 affidavit when being party to a lawsuit against the company, she claimed she was raped and sodomized while doing a public relations tour of military bases while working for WWE in 2007, which she was told to keep quiet about, a charge WWE has denied in the past and did again this past week..

Depression is a much larger issue in society than most truly understand. For a number of reasons, it is very strong in pro wrestling, as well as other forms of entertainment, due to the extreme highs involved in performing and fleeting nature of fame and the pressure on performing. Concussions likely exacerbate such issues, but it is a major part of society and entertainment in places where head trauma doesn’t exist. Most don’t talk about it publicly, due to the stigma, but many, such as Mauro Ranallo and A.J. Mendez (A.J. Lee) have been very outspoken on the subject.

Former Tye Dillinger announced for AEW Casino Battle Royale

The former Tye Dillinger will be taking part in AEW Double or Nothing on Saturday.

AEW has announced that Shawn Spears will be an entrant in Saturday’s Casino Battle Royale, which is part of the hour-long “Buy-In” pre-show for Double or Nothing. The announcement was made in a card draw video where Spears drew the 10 of diamonds.

“I’m coming to AEW because I believe in what they are doing,” Spears told Sports Illustrated. “I believe in providing an alternative for fans, and I really believe that the audience has wanted an alternative for quite some time. This is now the platform to give people exactly what they want, and I am really looking forward to proving myself in AEW.”

Spears requested his release from WWE in February and had it granted days later. Sports Illustrated’s interview with Spears noted that his no-compete clause expires less than 48 hours before Double or Nothing.

There will be 21 entrants in the Casino Battle Royale. It will start with five wrestlers in the ring, with waves of five entering every three minutes after that. The 21st participant will then enter on their own.

Jimmy Havoc, Billy Gunn, MJF, Michael Nakazawa, Jungle Boy, Glacier, Sonny Kiss, Joey Janela, Brandon Cutler, Ace Romero, Brian Pillman Jr., Sunny Daze, Dustin Thomas, Marq Quen, Isaiah Kassidy, and Luchasaurus are the other wrestlers who have been confirmed for the battle royal. The winner of the match will receive a future shot at the first AEW World Champion.

Sammy Guevara vs. Kip Sabian will also be part of the Double or Nothing pre-show. It will air live on AEW’s YouTube account starting at 7 p.m. Eastern time this Saturday. In the United Kingdom, the pre-show will be on ITV4.
