Legendary announcer Dave Brown set for AEW Collision in Memphis

A familiar voice will be on the call when AEW makes its debut in Memphis, Tennessee next month.

AEW has announced that Dave Brown will be a guest commentator on Saturday, October 21, when Collision takes place at the FedEx Forum. Brown and Lance Russell were the long-time hosts of Memphis Wrestling in the region. He has also been the chief meteorologist for WMC-TV, Memphis’ NBC affiliate, since 1977.

Brown also took part in a “Tribute to the Legends of Memphis Wrestling” celebration AEW held on a show in nearby Southaven, MI in January 2020.

Raw took place from Memphis’ FedEx Forum on August 28. WWE’s contract with the venue called for no announcing or advertising of other wrestling shows from the building for a certain period of time before and after. This was addressed in Friday’s edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter by our own Dave Meltzer.

Meltzer wrote:

The reason this date at the Fed Ex Forum was announced so late in the game is that WWE’s contract with arenas calls for no announcing or advertising of dates with other wrestling companies from a certain number of days before the event (so tickets for both aren’t on sale at the same time) and for a period after the event. Raw ran the building on 8/28 so it appears the window is about 15 days after the show before anyone could announce another show

VIDEO: AEW Dark episode 15 – Dave Brown on commentary

Tonight’s episode of AEW Dark will include legendary announcer Dave Brown appearing as a guest commentator:

The Memphis wrestling legend called his first nationally televised pro wrestling match on last week’s Dynamite and also joined the broadcast booth for the AEW Dark tapings. Brown was honored as part of AEW’s tribute to the legends of Memphis wrestling that took place before Dynamite.

Three matches are advertised for tonight’s show: Billy & Austin Gunn vs. Shawn Spears & Peter Avalon, Nyla Rose vs. Shanna, and Brandon Cutler vs. Darby Allin.

Austin Gunn debuted for AEW on New Year’s Day in a match where he teamed with his father against Spears & Preston Vance. That was a dark match that didn’t air on AEW Dark.

It was confirmed last week that Austin Gunn has signed with AEW.

AEW will be at the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Florida for tomorrow’s Bash at the Beach-themed episode of Dynamite.

Dave Brown to call AEW Dark this week, more Memphis tribute notes

We have additional notes for the tribute to Memphis Wrestling that will take place on this week’s AEW Dynamite.

Dave Brown will be appearing and calling Dark and Excalibur will be trying as best he can to call it as close to a Lance Russell as possible on that show. Doug Gilbert will be appearing to honor Tommy & Eddie Gilbert. Shane Russell, Lance’s son, will be there to help honor Lance Russell.

Lanny Poffo will be there to help honor his father Angelo and brother Randy Savage. Austin Idol and Jimmy Valiant are also scheduled.

Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson, who last appeared for AEW at Full Gear, are also scheduled for the taping. They were last seen helping The Young Bucks following their match against Santana & Ortiz when they were jumped by their opponents.

Randy Hales and Brandon Baxter worked with AEW officials on putting this together.

This week’s AEW Dynamite taping will take place at the Landers Center in Southaven, Mississippi.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Marathon: Lance Russell

On the latest edition of the July Classic Wrestling Marathon, Karl Stern takes a look at one of the greatest announcers of all time: legendary Memphis wrestling announcer Lance Russell.

Russell was more than just a play-by-play announcer, and was every bit as important a character to Memphis TV as Jerry Lawler or Bill Dundee was. It was Russell’s smooth and reasoned style that drove one of the most popular wrestling shows in the country.

Many will argue there were better announcers than Russell, saying that Gordon Solie or Jim Ross were better in many ways. On this show, Karl makes a strong case that for his particular territory and for his particular fan base, no one could have pulled off leading a show the way Russell did.

He not only was involved in pro wrestling for many decades, but also pulled off something very few people in the wrestling business have: remaining universally liked and respected.

Today, the DragonKingKarl Show takes a look at Lance Russell, one of the greatest announcers in wrestling history.
