F4W NEWSLETTER: Recapping WWE TLC 2019 Joseph Currier gives his thoughts on WWE’s final PPV of the decade.

WWE’s final pay-per-view of the decade took place on Sunday night and exemplified some of the changes we’ve seen over the past 10 years.

TLC 2019 was very much a B-level PPV in the WWE Network era. Not only were the top men’s and women’s singles titles from each brand not defended, there were no singles titles on the line at all. Seth Rollins vs. Kevin Owens and AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton seemed like they were being built up as non-title matches that would help anchor the card, but they didn’t end up getting added. The show even ended with an angle instead of a match. After Asuka & Kairi Sane’s tables, ladders, and chairs match against Becky Lynch & Charlotte Flair, a locker room brawl that featured Roman Reigns and Baron Corbin continued. The image that closed the show was Reigns spearing Corbin from an elevated area onto a pile of bodies. It felt like the ending of an episode of Raw or SmackDown instead of a major event.

FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE

Regarding the change in the AEW women’s title match, there was a communications issue in the sense because AEW runs Wednesdays and normally indies don’t run Wednesdays, they usually book talent without worrying about other dates.  And obviously they didn’t know about the other date. Kris Statlander had just started and was booked for both Tuesday and Wednesday this coming week for Bar Wrestling. Based on her contract, they could have done what WWE does when it comes to things like this all the time and just pulled the talent, but Statlander asked for the favor and they were able to work it in a way where they’ll do title matches the next two weeks, with Riho vs. Britt Baker vs. Hikaru Shida vs. Nyla Rose for the title on 1/1, and Statlander getting her shot on 1/8.   Statlander is scheduled on New Year’s Eve to face Priscilla Kelly and on 1/1 to face Gisele Shaw for shows in the Los Angeles area.

Taz is on Wednesday’s AEW show to announce with Jim Ross and Excalibur because Tony Schiavone will be announcing the Sugar Bowl game for radio that day. Regarding stories that came out like Taz would be introduced as an authority figure, AEW has no plans for a television authority figure.

Regarding the New Japan/AXS relationship ending one year early, AXS had lost interest in promoting a rival company to the company they own. In this case, ratings weren’t an issue. New Japan runs the same market as Impact. It was the logical conclusion. It’s not good at all for New Japan, but as soon as AXS let go of all the key people who made the New Japan deal, it was a question of when, not if.

I’m doing a Q&A show on 1/4 in Tokyo at Toudoukhan’s Wrestling store at 11 a.m. before the Tokyo Dome show.More details here.

We like to be mad at things and have something to fight for. WWE Main Event results: The Revival vs. Titus Worldwide

The Big Takeaway: Raw rehash and WrestleMania build dominated the show this week. It otherwise saw The Revival steal a win against Titus Worldwide in the opener and a six-man cruiserweight tag match that ran at under two minutes in the main event.

**********

The Revival defeated Titus Worldwide (w/ Dana Brooke) (5:50)

Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder continued their build towards their appearance in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania with a win over Titus Worldwide. Vic Joseph put over on commentary again and again how they always know where the other is and what a successful team they have been of late, leading us to wonder how they will function in an every-man-for-themselves matchup.

Due to their cult following on the NXT roster, The Revival still get a strong crowd reaction when they come out — and that was especially apparent this week on Main Event. Apollo and Dawson started things off in the ring together in a match that was 50-50 throughout.

Titus O’Neil eventually got the heat and bulldozed both Wilder and Dawson, but Wilder managed to get them into a strong position when he blind tagged in so that The Revival were able to double team O’Neil and set up the Shatter Machine for the win.

Kalisto, Lince Dorado & Gran Metalik defeated Tony Nese, Ariya Daivari & Jack Gallagher (1:46)

Last week on Main Event, top billing was given to six-man cruiserweight tag action, but it was frustratingly short with the finish coming at just after two minutes of action. In what was almost a rematch of last week’s match, with TJP substituted for Gallagher, this one was even shorter with Kalisto sealing the victory for the luchador team.

The highlight of the match was when Metalik stood on the apron and ducked his head under the top rope, ushering Dorado to use him to propel him over the top rope. Dorado ran up and launched himself off Metalik’s shoulders to the outside, striking both Daivari and Gallagher onto the floor.

Over on 205 Live, the offerings this week were extremely strong, with Nese and Mark Andrews putting on a really quality singles match. Nese came up short there, just as he did here, when Kalisto nailed him with an enzuigiri and followed it up with the Salida del Sol for the victory.

The Revival back in action on WWE Raw

After Scott Dawson was cleared to return from injury, The Revival had their first match as a team in over four months on Monday night.

Dawson & Dash Wilder took on Heath Slater & Rhyno in their return on Raw, with The Revival hitting the Shatter Machine to get the win. Apollo Crews, Titus O’Neil, and Dana Brooke were shown watching the match backstage while it was going on. And in a post-match angle, Kurt Angle told Slater and Rhyno that they need to toughen up a bit if they want more opportunities.

Dawson was expected to return this month after suffering a ruptured right bicep in August and later undergoing surgery. It was noted in today’s daily update that Dawson was backstage at Raw and that The Revival could possibly be returning on the show.

While Dawson was out of action, Wilder wrestled on house shows and on Main Event as he waited for his tag team partner to return to the ring. After their post-WrestleMania call-up, Wilder also missed a couple of months earlier this year due to a fractured jaw.

WWE Main Event results: Dash Wilder loses three in a row

The Big Takeaway: Dash Wilder made it three losses in three weeks, then Lince Dorado and Gran Metalik put on a beautiful display in the main event.

**********

Heath Slater defeated Dash Wilder (5:35)

Two weeks ago on Main Event, Dash Wilder was beaten with relative ease by Rhyno’s spinebuster. Last week, he and Slater went back and forth in a fairly by-the-numbers bout with Slater getting the win with the Smash Hit. This week, Wilder lost again. To Rhyno. With the spinebuster.

Nigel McGuinness was nowhere to be seen on the show and, instead, we were back with Corey Graves alongside Vic Joseph. Graves has a way of drawing you into matches and he really knows his wrestling and calls moves well, but McGuinness is better at putting the talent over.

Wilder is comfortable on his own, here, but lacks the kind of charisma at this stage of his WWE run to be carrying a match with a veteran like Rhyno. Rhyno sold a lot as Wilder took the match until the finish, where Rhyno fired up to hit his big moves.

The match was what you’d expect. It was slow and full of rest holds and Wilder’s quick pin attempts. Rhyno made Wilder look strong and powerful, but he finished him with the spinebuster in the end without too much concern.

Rhyno still seems to exist off the nostalgic pop that hasn’t faded too much, but without Slater the act is less fun for pre-Raw matches like these on Main Event.

Lince Dorado & Gran Metalik defeated Drew Gulak & Tony Nese (4:25)

The Cruiserweight tag match once again saved the show, bringing some pace, action, and invention to an otherwise run-of-the-mill episode. The finish was awe-inspiring from Dorado, who finished Gulak with a magnificent springboard shooting star senton.

Gulak, who is now clean shaven, had a few matches on Main Event over the summer months, but is now without a win on any show, televised or otherwise, since the end of May.

Dorado and Metalik speak for themselves. They’d be fantastic together on the main roster and could easily find a position in the tag team division. They did a great spot here where Metalik was teasing a springboard attack on Gulak on the outside, but the distraction meant that Dorado was able to fly at him with a seated senton. They did similar things a couple of times in the match and it proved to be very effective.

The match was far too short, but the finish made up for it. Metalik flew over the top rope onto Nese on the outside, while Dorado stunned Gulak on the top rope to set him in position for a huge springboard shooting star senton. Graves’ exclamation of “good lord!” after he landed it said it all.

WWE Main Event results: Dash Wilder loses again

The Big Takeaway: Dash Wilder lost his second solo match in as many weeks, then Mustafa Ali stole the show in the main event.

**********

The show opened with a tribute to Bobby “The Brain” Heenan.

Heath Slater defeated Dash Wilder (5:23)

Last week on Main Event, Wilder was beaten with relative ease by Rhyno’s spinebuster. Here, he and Slater went back and forth in a fairly by-the-numbers bout with Slater getting the win with the Smash Hit.

They’ve been going with Rhyno and Slater on their own without each other at ringside of late, which takes something away from their act. Slater has only really ever had a handful of solo wins lately, and they’ve generally been on this show against talent who are just as low on the card. When Rhyno was there to cheerlead and bodyguard, it always got a good reaction.

Here, though, Wilder was beaten for the second straight week as he doesn’t have much to do without his injured tag partner, Scott Dawson.

The story of the match was that Wilder was the stronger, more dangerous performer but Slater was plucky and continued to thwart him. Eventually, Slater took the win when he reversed Wilder’s suplex into his lifting DDT.

Nigel McGuinness has helped improve the show now that he is on the announce team. Generally, Corey Graves, although good, switched to being a heel on Main Event and would essentially treat Vic Joseph with disdain. But McGuinness is there to put over the talent and really helps call moves.

Lince Dorado & Mustafa Ali defeated Ariya Daivari & Tony Nese (7:48)

If the show wasn’t already a re-run of sorts from last week, this match saw four of the six men from last week’s main event in Anaheim go at it again. The faces won again on this show with the match building to Ali finishing Daivari with his impressive 054.

On any other show, this kind of all-action, fast-paced tag match would go down really well, but here it’s hidden. On a show that is difficult to catch in the United States, there’s often little reason to go out of your way to find it when you have countless hours of other content out there to watch.

Nese, who didn’t even get a tag last week, looked really good here. He has grown his hair and beard out and his physique is impressive for this division. He and Dorado work really smoothly together. The highlight was Mustafa Ali, though. His move set is exciting and fresh, and he and Daivari work extremely well together.

The match was all about the finish: they did a great spot where Dorado was selling an injury, leaning on the middle rope for a breather while Daivari and Nese were outside. Ali climbed up, stood on Dorado’s back, and performed a beautiful moonsault off his back onto both men.

Dorado followed it up by nailing Nese with a top rope crossbody, while Ali was able to set up for the 054 on Daivari for the win.

WWE Main Event results: Rhyno vs. Dash Wilder

The Big Takeaway: Dash Wilder made his singles debut on Main Event in a loss to Rhyno, then the cruiserweights put on a good six-man tag match with a magnificent finish.

**********

Rhyno defeated Dash Wilder (5:45)

Wilder took a lot of the match here despite Rhyno’s size and strength advantage. Unfortunately, Wilder has been completely forgotten about since Scott Dawson got injured and the crowd, who were initially behind Rhyno, quickly didn’t care too much for this match.

Rhyno and Wilder went back and forth until Wilder knocked him off the top rope over to the outside. The blow Rhyno took as he tumbled to the matting slowed him down and let Wilder look like he had a realistic shot.

Wilder tried some quick pin attempts and used a rear chinlock to wear him down, but Rhyno worked his way out and speared Wilder in the corner. Rhyno tried a belly-to-belly suplex but only got a two count.

Rhyno went for the Gore, but Wilder dodged and rolled the posted Rhyno into a schoolboy, using the ropes for leverage. Rhyno kicked out and this time picked up the running Wilder into a spinebuster for the win.

Gran Metalik, Lince Dorado & Mustafa Ali defeated Ariya Daivari, Noam Dar & Tony Nese (5:20)

After endless entrances, Dorado and Daivari started things off together. Ali distracted Daivari and he turned around to eat a slick dropkick from Dorado, but Daivari kicked out at two. Dorado hit him with a second rope springboard moonsault for two and then locked in a rest hold.

Daivari tagged in Dar and Dorado made the tag to Ali. Ali came off the top rope and nailed Dar’s left arm with a double foot stomp and then tagged in Metalik, who did likewise with a double axe handle. Metalik flipped all over around Dar, who did his best to dodge, but he was planted with a bulldog and rolled outside.

Both teams stared each other down as we headed to a break.

Daivari was yelling at Dorado as we returned. He slapped on a rear chinlock to a roar of boos. The crowd clapped Dorado out of the hold and he was able to surprise Daivari with a springboard stunner. They crawled to their corners and tagged in Ali and Dar. Ali overwhelmed Dar and hit him with a roll-through neckbreaker, but Nese and Daivari broke up the pin.

The ring filled, with all six men going at it. The heels were sent packing and Metalik, Dorado, and Ali hit them with triple seated sentons in what was quite the spectacle. Ali rolled Dar back into the ring and hit the 054 for the win. Nese never even got tagged in, but this was a fun match.

WWE Main Event results: Kalisto vs. Scott Dawson

The Big Takeaway: Solid cruiserweight action held up the show again, while The Revival made it two weeks running on Main Event, this time with Scott Dawson in singles action.

**********

Rich Swann defeated Ariya Daivari (5:40)

Although it’s sad to see Rich Swann in a lesser position than he was in previously, this was a good advert for 205 Live. Swann starts quickly and is all over Daivari like a rash, even teasing an early Phoenix Splash. Daivari coaxes him out on to the apron and is able to send him head-first into the post.

Swann sells the move and acts as a deadweight as Daivari struggles to roll him back into the ring and stomps all over him. He slaps on a rear chinlock to slow things down. Swann works his way out and is able to hit Daivari with an enzuigiri to the back of his head as both men go down.

The last two minutes are excellent. Swann hits a beautiful modified Michinoku Driver, but Daivari kicks out. He counters with an inverted DDT and the Persian Lion Splash, but Swann kicks out. They go back and forth until Swann connects with a superkick to put Daivari in position for the Phoenix Splash, which he lands for the win. This was a very good opener.

Kalisto defeated Scott Dawson (w/ Dash Wilder) (4:40)

Kalisto takes no disrespect from Dawson, and after some early shoving, slaps him in the face. Dawson charges around the ring, hitting Kalisto with European uppercuts until Kalisto spins him around with a hurricanrana and dropkicks him outside.

Dawson goes to his tag partner and calls for a timeout as Kalisto teases a suicide dive onto both Dawson and Wilder. The Revival then try to team up on Kalisto, with Wilder handing the ring apron to Dawson to help him stop the momentum of a sunset flip. Dawson then regains his balance, and as the referee sees to the apron, he drives his knee into Kalisto’s left arm and we head to a break.

When we come back, Dawson tries to superplex Kalisto but is thrown off and eats a diving crossbody, followed by a springboard seated senton. Kalisto hits the spike rana, but Dawson kicks out at two.

Kalisto sends Dawson outside, then after punting Wilder, takes a huge clothesline on the apron from Dawson and looks in trouble. But back in the ring, Dawson tries for a suplex and Kalisto catches him in an inside cradle that he can’t kick out of in time, so Kalisto steals a plucky win.

Dash Wilder out of action after fracturing jaw

One half of The Revival will be out of action for the next several weeks after suffering an injury.

WWE.com announced today that Dash Wilder fractured his jaw at an NXT house show over the weekend. Wilder last wrestled when he teamed with Scott Dawson against Shinsuke Nakamura & Hideo Itami in Spartanburg, South Carolina on Friday night.

The Revival also showed up later that night after the Bobby Roode vs. Tye Dillinger main event to aid Dillinger and Nakamura against Roode and The Authors of Pain, though Wilder suffered the injury in the tag match earlier.

There was an angle on the Saturday NXT show in Concord, North Carolina where The Revival had to decide which member would be Roode’s partner against Nakamura & Dillinger in the main event, with Wilder being held out due to his injury. Dawson sided with the babyfaces after that match before there was a farewell to The Revival, Nakamura, and Dillinger as they take their places on the main roster.

WWE’s post about Wilder’s injury noted that he’ll have to get his jaw wired and that he should be back in approximately eight weeks.

The Revival made their main roster debut on the Raw after WrestleMania earlier this month. They defeated The New Day two weeks in a row and were being positioned as one of the top teams in the show’s tag team division.

Pro Wrestling Sheet first reported news of Wilder’s injury earlier today.

The Revival debut on the Raw after WrestleMania

Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder, known collectively as The Revival, made their debut on the Raw after WrestleMania tonight, accepting an open challenge issued by The New Day. They defeated them, pinning Xavier Woods with the Shatter Machine before laying out Kofi Kingston after the match.

The Revival were last seen at NXT TakeOver: Orlando this past Saturday night in a losing effort against The Authors of Pain and DIY in a triple threat elimination match for the NXT tag team titles. After losing the match, it figured that they would be making their way to the main roster at some point soon.

Dawson and Wilder started teaming together in 2014 at NXT live events, going under the name The Mechanics. After a year of being used as enhancement talent on television, they were given a push, eventually winning the NXT Tag Team Championship in November of that year.

They held the belts twice before losing them for a final time to DIY at NXT TakeOver: Toronto last November.
