January 4, 2021 Observer Newsletter: Rest in Peace Brodie Lee & Danny Hodge

The shocking death of Jon Huber, better known as Brodie Lee and Luke Harper, brought a fractured U.S. wrestling world together in ways almost never thought possible.

Huber passed away on 12/26, two months after his lungs began to shut down, while hospitalized at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. He had been hospitalized since late October, just weeks after one of the biggest matches of his career, a dog collar chain match where he lost the TNT title to Cody Rhodes on the 10/7 episode of Dynamite. It was a brutal bloodbath match, more akin to a match from the 1970s as far as the bleeding, but with the harder physical style of modern wrestling.

His death at the age of 41 left people looking for answers, which created a furor of its own. Given the times, COVID-19 would be the conclusion almost everyone would to come to. In many ways, it would give people an answer. Obviously his doctors didn’t discount that possibility as he was tested over-and-over while in the hospital, with every test imaginable, including for antibodies which would show having it in the recent past, even though he was also tested regularly at his work.

Danny Hodge passes away at 88 years old

Regarded as one of the best amateur wrestlers of all-time in addition to an extensive pro wrestling career, Danny Hodge passed away at the age of 88 on Christmas day.

While the cause of death isn’t known yet, he had been battling dementia for several years. He and his wife had three children.

The Perry, Oklahoma, native was a member of the Professional Hall of Fame; the International Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame; the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for both amateur and pro wrestling, the Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame (1996), and more. He also earned the Cauliflower Alley Club lifetime achievement award (2004) and the Lou Thesz Award (2007).

The Oklahoma state wrestling champion went to the University of Oklahoma and amassed a sterling 46-0 record with three Big Seven titles, and three NCAA titles at 177 pounds. He was never even taken off his feet as a college wrestler, an incredible feat. The annual award given to the NCAA’s best wrestler every year is named after him.

He competed at two Olympics, winning the silver medal in Australia in 1956. He later tried his hand at boxing, amassing a winning record in both the amateurs and pros.

Known for abnormal hand strength due to being born to two sets of tendons in his hands, he went into the pro wrestling world following training from Leroy McGuirk and Ed “Strangler” Lewis, debuting in the fall of 1959 and become a major star, especially in the McGuirk’s midwest territory and in the parts of the southern U.S. He held the NWA junior heavyweight title eight times, won several NWA Tri-State titles, and others, including in Japan.

His career ended in 1976 after a car accident nearly cost him his life.

Dave Meltzer will have more on Hodge’s life and career later today.

Danny Hodge found safe after being reported missing

Danny Hodge, who was missing last night, was found and is okay according to messages sent by his granddaughter, Stacy Ewy Wilson, and Les Thatcher.

Hodge, 86 was reported missing at 5:30 p.m. last night when police put out a silver alert on one of the greatest amateur and pro wrestlers of all-time.

Police feared that Hodge, who suffers from dementia, would not be able to find his way home. The alert stated that Hodge was “in imminent danger of serious bodily injury or death.”

“Praise God! Thank you!,” wrote Wilson. “We appreciate all of your help and prayers! Grandpa, Danny Hodge, has been located in Tulsa! On our way to pick him up. Very blessed to have so many who love him and our family.”

Tulsa is about 90 miles from Perry, where Hodge is the local hero, and lives.

Jake Hager (Jack Swagger) grew up down the street from Hodge and wrestled with his grandchildren.

Wrestling Weekly: WWE Cruiserweight Tourney, Danny Hodge, Undertaker at Mania

The major topic of conversation today is the upcoming Global Cruiserweight Tournament; the potential opportunity it represents for talent, what it means (if anything) in terms of WWE’s feelings about cruiserweights in general, and what you need to be prepared if you’re a cruiserweight who sees this as your big opportunity to get on the WWE radar screen.  Les and Vic segue into discussing being a junior heavyweight in the territory era (25:02) and one of the greats regardless of weight class; the one and only Danny Hodge.  From there, we’ll talk the latest regarding Undertaker’s Wrestlemania opponent (43:23) and what could be the end of Wade Barrett (and many missed opportunities) in WWE (51:44).
