In this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer gave some updates on AEW potentially signing two big free agents in Daniel Bryan and CM Punk:
While no one has been able to confirm either signing, Meltzer said Bryan (Bryan Danielson) and AEW have been talking for months as he is considering WWE, AEW and New Japan as his next destination. New Japan is still the big X-factor, according to Meltzer, and part of the reason WWE president Nick Khan was trying to get a working relationship going.
“My belief is that if it was not for the pandemic, Danielson would have already been wrestling in New Japan by now unless a deal was made with WWE or AEW where he promised them the first appearance and match back since the AEW or WWE money offers would be so much higher and thus it was a virtual lock he was ending up in one place or the other,” he wrote.
Meltzer said a a WWE source tells him that internally, the belief is that Punk has signed with AEW.
“There are a number of things going on behind-the-scenes that would indicate that, but nobody in AEW has confirmed it, and of course, they won’t until the decision is made for them to go public with something of that magnitude,” he wrote.
He added that WWE previously had no interest in bringing him back, but AEW’s interest may have changed that.
He also noted that secondary ticket prices for All Out in Chicago have increased 18% since the rumors started with a “get in” price of $141.
Rumors regarding Bryan Danielson and C.M. Punk heading to AEW broke on 7/21.
First, with Danielson, what was first reported by Cassidy Haynes of Bodyslam.net is that Danielson has signed with AEW, and that he would debut on the 9/22 show at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. Bryan Alvarez also heard the same date for a debut for Danielson.
Nobody has been able to confirm the story but for such a major story, nobody has denied it either. Debuts for either or both would be something that the company would never confirm to begin with, and if the stories weren’t true, they’d be quick to deny them most likely.
For something at that level, one would think there would be a denial if there wasn’t something to the stories or at least something close because in a number of cases of reports of people on the verge of signing who were not, denials came quickly, particularly involving Punk, who has been quick to deny previous rumors. Punk even played into them by tweeting out the Alan Parsons Project song “Sirius” which is the theme song for the Chicago Bulls and AEW has looked to trademark the phrase “First Dance” which is an offshoot of “Last Dance,” the name of the heavily talked about 2020 ESPN mini-series of the heyday of the Bulls and Michael Jordan.
In this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer had some notes on three of WWE’s biggest names: Daniel Bryan, John Cena and Paul Heyman.
On the status of the current free agent, Meltzer said that the mentions of Bryan on WWE TV of late isn’t an indication he’s coming back, but rather because he is part of the story of Roman Reigns vs. Edge following their three-way match at this year’s WrestleMania. ”Nobody really knows what he’s doing past if he’s made a secret deal with any company. They are keeping it a secret until doing a dramatic reveal when they want to,” Meltzer said.
On Cena, Meltzer said the filming schedule for Cena’s new movie Argylle begins in Europe in August. It’s unclear how that affects his planned SummerSlam match with Reigns and “it’s possible he could start after or end prior to the date or even get a few days off.” Other than that, his commitments appear to be clear if he is to return to WWE TV to build up the match.
Meltzer also reported that Paul Heyman is off Talking Smack permanently, replaced by Pat McAfee. Meltzer said there was no real reason for the decision but “everything can change tomorrow in WWE.” He said there are questions about how to handle Talking Smack when they go back out on the road, mainly because Fox doesn’t want the show to air before the West Coast audience can see the show. He said there doesn’t seem to be that level of concern with Raw Talk.
In talking with people close to the negotiations, Meltzer said the partnership wasn’t the idea of WWE president Nick Khan, but that Khan has been the point person and is believed to have recommended to Vince McMahon to further pursue it.
Meltzer said that while Daniel Bryan was involved in the early discussions, the free agent hasn’t been part of any recent talks.
He said the initial intent of such a partnership wasn’t to freeze out AEW, but an exclusive deal would end relationships with both AEW and Impact Wrestling where New Japan talent has appeared as of late. He believes any deal would be more NXT-focused and beneficial for both sides.
“New Japan also would not agree to any deal unless they felt it was extremely beneficial to them. Keep in mind that WWE has regularly tried to talk with (New Japan) in the past and it’s gotten nowhere. The real difference here is Nick Khan has never been involved in these talks in the past,” he wrote.
“This very well could get about as far as WWE’s talks to buy NOAH, Stardom, Big Japan, Dragon Gate and AAA got, which all ended with no deal in place. Logic would indicate Tony Khan would not have cut that video thinking this deal is going to happen any time soon, so it’s more likely than not this deal isn’t happening,” he wrote.
The video Meltzer mentioned was the AEW president cutting a promo going over all the New Japan talent that has been in AEW and that he has more plans for the New Japan U.S. title, joking that there is only room for one Khan in pro wrestling.

Dave Meltzer has confirmed that Bryan’s contract expired this past Friday, and that WWE “is pushing hard for him to sign a new deal”. Fightful Select were the first to report the news, saying that the contract was expired or was set to expire. They also said that this does not mean that he is leaving WWE, as he has been vocal about doing “unconventional work with and for WWE”.
The news comes as Bryan lost to Roman Reigns on this past Friday’s episode of WWE SmackDown. As a result of the loss, Bryan was “banished” from the brand. He has not shown up on Raw or any other brand since his loss.
Aside from a brief time he was released from the company in 2010, Bryan has been signed to WWE since 2009. From 2015 to 2018, he retired from professional wrestling due to concussion-related medical issues. He has appeared on SmackDown regularly since returning from a hiatus in October.
Roman Reigns’ Universal Championship and Daniel Bryan’s SmackDown career were on the line in the main event of last night’s SmackDown.
With Bryan passing out in a guillotine, Reigns retained the Universal Championship and Bryan was banished from SmackDown. Reigns also laid out Bryan with a con-chair-to after the match was over.
Cesaro had tried to make the save for Bryan after the match. But as he was beating down Reigns, Jey Uso attacked Cesaro. Uso then tied up Cesaro in the ropes and forced him to watch Reigns give Bryan the con-chair-to.
Reigns debuted new theme music on last night’s show.
Also on last night’s SmackDown, the Intercontinental title was on the line as Apollo Crews faced off with former champion Big E, WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler took on Natalya & Tamina in a non-title match, and SmackDown Women’s Champion Bianca Belair & The Street Profits teamed up against Bayley & SmackDown Tag Team Champions Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode.
With his SmackDown career on the line, Daniel Bryan lost to Universal Champion Roman Reigns on Friday night..
Reigns defeated Bryan in the main event of this week’s SmackDown to retain the Universal Championship. As a stipulation of Bryan losing the match, Bryan is now “banished” from SmackDown.
Reigns won the match when Bryan passed out in a guillotine. After the match, Reigns got two steel chairs and went to give Bryan a con-chair-to. Cesaro then ran down to make the save. As Cesaro was beating down Reigns, Jey Uso attacked Cesaro. Uso tied up Cesaro in the ropes and forced him to watch Reigns give Bryan a con-chair-to.
After Bryan had worked over his right arm throughout the match, Reigns switched to using his left arm when he locked Bryan in the guillotine to get the win.
On last week’s SmackDown, Bryan had advocated for Cesaro to get the next title shot against Reigns. Reigns responded to Cesaro’s challenge by telling him that his answer is no and will always be no. Reigns said Cesaro isn’t on his level. Reigns then challenged Bryan to a title match. Cesaro told Bryan he had to take the opportunity. Bryan went to respond, but Reigns then added that he didn’t want to see Bryan on his show again if Bryan lost. Bryan accepted the stipulation.
A high-stakes Universal Championship match headlines tonight’s episode of SmackDown.
Universal Champion Roman Reigns will put his title on the line against Daniel Bryan in tonight’s main event. If Bryan loses, he’ll be banished from SmackDown.
Bryan pushed for Cesaro to get the next Universal title shot during last week’s SmackDown. Reigns refused to give Cesaro a title shot. He noted the answer will always be “no” because Cesaro’s not at his level.
Instead, Reigns demanded to face Bryan in a title match. Reigns said he’s sick of Bryan and wants him to leave SmackDown. Bryan agreed to face Reigns after Cesaro encouraged him to accept the challenge.
A second title match will also occur on tonight’s show as Intercontinental Champion Apollo Crews defends against Big E. At WrestleMania 37, Crews won the title from Big E in a Nigerian Drum Fight after Commander Azeez interfered. Crews made his first title defense last week, defeating Kevin Owens after getting more help from Azeez.
Our live coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

“It’s taken me time to fully process what the experience was like because it wasn’t like a normal thing,” he explained. “It was really weird, like out of body in it. When I’m wrestling, I feel everything and feel like I really enjoy it. This was weird, I was out there and it felt like I was detached. It was so strange in fact that before the match started, I got this strange feeling like, ‘Is this what it’s like before you die? Am I going to die? I was like huh, well, okay.’ I don’t know why or how it happened, but it was unlike anything I have felt while wrestling.”
He later explained that he may have seen it as a sign of winding down his career as a full-time wrestler, which he has expressed before in previous interviews.
“The odd detachment, I was like, ‘woah’,” he said. “Like I said, I’m either gonna die or maybe it’s a sign that this isn’t it and it isn’t the same type of fulfillment that it was before. I’ve been trying to meditate on it and talk to my friends that I’m close with like ‘hey, what is that?'”
Bryan also confirmed in the interview that his contract was coming up “relatively soon” and was considering what he would do.
