WWE ID prospect Zayda Steel is urging fellow wrestlers to take care of themselves after she collapsed following an indie match this past weekend.
Steel was in action for CZW in New Jersey on Saturday night, facing off against Zara Zakher in an official WWE ID Showcase match. She was then supposed to face Charity King for New Texas Pro Wrestling on Sunday, but Steel did not compete at the show. She sent out a tweet yesterday saying that, due to not sleeping or eating enough, she collapsed after her match for CZW.
The 21-year-old Steel wrote: “I collapsed after my match last night due to lack of sleep & eating so let this be your reminder to take care & listen to your body!”
Vert Vixen replaced Steel against Charity King at the New Texas Pro Wrestling event.
Steel currently holds the New Texas Pro Women’s Championship.
This Thursday, Steel is scheduled to be back in action when she faces Kylie Rae in a WWE ID Showcase match for Wrestling Open in Worcester, Massachusetts. By winning Showcase matches, ID prospects can earn the opportunity to compete on WWE’s new Evolve series that premieres this March.
Steel was one of the first wrestlers to join the WWE ID program. Launched in October 2024, it provides indie wrestlers with financial support and other development opportunities ahead of them potentially joining NXT on a full-time basis one day.
Danny Havoc, best remembered for his runs in both Combat Zone Wrestling and Game Changer Wrestling, has passed away.
GCW posted the following tonight on their Twitter page: “With a broken heart, the GCW family mourns the loss of Grant Berkland aka Danny Havoc. Danny was an incredibly talented, intelligent, caring & genuine person. He was also an elite performer that entertained a generation of fans & inspired a generation of aspiring performers.”
“Like those that passed before him,” they continued, “his legacy is secured by the memories that he bestowed upon us both as a wrestler and as a friend. He will not be forgotten. Rest in Peace, Grant.”
CZW on Twitter wrote the following: “This cuts too deep. Grant “Danny Havoc” Berkland. He was an inspiration to so many and a friend to all and our hearts go out to his family and loved ones. We can take a small comfort in knowing the entire wrestling community are sharing the same grief right now.”
“I can’t put it into words right now…I’m just too heartbroken and devestated,” Drake Wuertz wrote on Twitter. “I love you Grant… I’m gonna miss you so much brother.”
Havoc wrestled for both CZW and GCW throughout his career, most recently taking part in GCW’s tour of Japan earlier this year. He also appeared in The Wrestlers, a documentary series that recently aired on Vice.
In what could be one of the sickest and strangest stories in the history of independent pro wrestling, wrestler Messiah, real name William Welch, had his thumb cut off by attackers who also attempted to cut off his penis while at his apartment in Canyon Country, CA on 8/1.
Police had contacted several people within wrestling after the fact. They were investigating Welch’s belief that the attack was related to the wrestling industry.
Welch described the incident as two African-Americans, both in their mid-20s and weighing in the range of 230 to 250 pounds coming into his unlocked door. Welch believed they were there to see his roommate, but then they attacked him. Welch provided a description of the assailants detailed enough for police sketches.
According to Gary Yap, the promoter of EPIC, the company Messiah was currently wrestling with after a heated departure from XPW, the 25-year-old Welch told him he was playing video games at 6 p.m. when they came in.
Another confirmation of one of pro wrestling’s worst-kept-secrets is a Combat Zone Wrestling advertisement that just came out for the promotion’s Saturday night New Heights show in Voorhees, New Jersey that is advertising, “Don’t miss one of Matt Riddle’s final indy appearances before going to WWE!”
Riddle has pulled out of a number of dates, most notably SummerSlam weekend and dates in September over the past week, including being replaced by Trevor Lee in PWG’s Battle of Los Angeles.
It is widely expected WWE will announce Riddle at the NXT show in Brooklyn, or some time around that period and he will start in NXT imminently.
Riddle was on Sean Waltman’s podcast this week and just said that everyone that wasn’t interested in him previously now was (referring to WWE and New Japan) but because of WWE rules on this sort of thing, couldn’t commit further. Our communication with him was similar, where he just confirmed both sides being interested but couldn’t confirm anything more.
