NWA to crown new Women’s Champion at Crockett Cup

The NWA will be crowning a new Women’s Champion at this Saturday’s Crockett Cup event.

It was announced today that Jazz has vacated the NWA World Women’s Championship and won’t be appearing at the Crockett Cup.

Jazz was supposed to defend her title against Allysin Kay (formerly known as Sienna in Impact Wrestling) at the Crockett Cup. Kay will be in the match to crown a new champion, with the NWA noting that her opponent will be announced this week.

Kay was a two-time Knockouts Champion in Impact. She was also a participant in last year’s Mae Young Classic and is a former SHINE Champion.

Jazz had been NWA Women’s Champion since September 2016.

Cabarrus Arena in Concord, North Carolina will host the Crockett Cup on Saturday. The NWA is partnering with ROH for the event, and it will air live on HonorClub, Fite TV, and pay-per-view. NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Nick Aldis is defending his title against Marty Scurll, while NWA National Champion Willie Mack is defending against Colt Cabana.

The Briscoes vs. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express and Satoshi Kojima & Yuji Nagata vs. PCO & Brody King are the matches on the left side of the Crockett Cup bracket. On the right side, Flip Gordon & Bandido vs. Stuka Jr. & Guerrero Maya Jr. and Jax Dane & Crimson vs. the winners of a wild card battle royal (which will take place that night) are the tournament matches.

NWA reveals Crockett Cup tournament bracket, title matches

The National Wrestling Alliance has revealed the bracket for the Crockett Cup tournament that will take place later this month.

The tournament itself will comprise of eight teams from the NWA, ROH, CMLL and NJPW. A video posted tonight revealed the bracket:

Block A:

  • The Briscoes vs. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express
  • Satoshi Kojima and Yuji Nagata vs. PCO and Brody King

Block B:

  • Flip Gordon and Bandido vs. Stuka Jr. and Guerrero Maya Jr.
  • Jax Dane and Crimson vs. The winners of a wild card battle royal that will take place that night

The winners of both blocks will face each other in the finals to determine this year’s Crockett Cup winner.

All of the major NWA titles will be on the line as well. The NWA World title will be on the line as champion Nick Aldis will face Marty Scurll. Jazz will defend the NWA Women’s title against former Impact star Sienna and National champion Willie Mack will face Colt Cabana.

The 2019 Crockett Cup will take place on April 27 at the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center in Concord, North Carolina.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Express set to compete in the 2019 Crockett Cup

One of the more prolific teams from the Crockett era are set to compete in this year’s Crockett Cup.

Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson, The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express, have been announced for this year’s tournament. They’ve previously competed in the 1986 and 1987 tournaments, but failed to advance to the finals.

Already announced for this year’s tournament include The War Kings (Crimson and Jax Dane), Villain Enterprises (Brody King and PCO) and the Briscoes. Teams from both CMLL and NJPW are also expected to be announced ahead of the tournament.

An NWA World Heavyweight title match as also been announced, as Nick Aldis will defend the title against ROH’s Marty Scurll. Willie Mack, the North American champion and Jazz, the NWA Women’s champion, will also be defending their titles.

The 2019 Crockett Cup will take place on April 27 at the Cabarrus Arena in Concord, North Carolina.

Two more matches set for ROH 17th Anniversary PPV

Two more matches have been made official for Ring of Honor’s 17th Anniversary pay-per-view.

ROH announced today that Jeff Cobb will defend his Television title against Shane Taylor at the Anniversary event. The show is taking place at Sam’s Town Live in Las Vegas, Nevada on Friday, March 15.

Taylor laid out Cobb with his Greetings From 216 finisher at January’s television tapings. There was also an angle at Honor Reigns Supreme that month where Taylor refused to wrestle in a match against Cobb, Jonathan Gresham, and Rhett Titus. The stipulation was that Taylor, Gresham, or Titus would have gotten an instant TV title shot if they won. Taylor attacked Cobb after the match and held up the TV title belt.

LifeBlood’s Mark Haskins & Tracy Williams vs. The Kingdom’s Vinny Marseglia & TK O’Ryan has also been announced for the Anniversary PPV. LifeBlood saved ROH World Champion Jay Lethal from The Kingdom on this week’s episode of ROH TV.

Lethal will defend his title against The Kingdom’s Matt Taven at the Anniversary PPV. Here’s the updated card for the show:

Marty Scurll to challenge for NWA title at Crockett Cup

The NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship will be on the line at April’s Crockett Cup event.

An angle at tonight’s Ring of Honor television tapings in Lakeland, Florida set up Nick Aldis defending his NWA title against Marty Scurll at the Crockett Cup. Given their friendship and history together, Aldis wanted Scurll to be his partner in the tag team tournament. Scurll instead challenged Aldis to the title match. Aldis accepted the challenge.

The Crockett Cup is taking place at Cabarrus Arena in Concord, North Carolina on Saturday, April 27. The NWA is partnering with ROH for the tournament, and it’s also been announced that New Japan Pro Wrestling and CMLL are sending teams to take part in it.

Crimson & Jax Dane and Villain Enterprises (PCO & Brody King) are the first two teams to be confirmed for the Crockett Cup. Ian Riccaboni, Jim Cornette, and Joe Galli will be the commentary team, and The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson), The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton, Dennis Condrey, Stan Lane & Cornette), Nikita Koloff, and Magnum TA will be making appearances in Concord.

NJPW and CMLL sending teams to NWA-ROH Crockett Cup

There will be representation from New Japan Pro Wrestling and CMLL when the Crockett Cup returns in April.

The NWA announced today that NJPW and CMLL “will be sending teams” to the Crockett Cup, which is taking place at Cabarrus Arena in Concord, North Carolina on Saturday, April 27. The NWA didn’t reveal further details on which NJPW and CMLL teams are going to be in the tournament.

The NWA and Ring of Honor are partnering together to put on the Crockett Cup. NJPW and CMLL are both partners with ROH.

Two teams have already been announced for the Crockett Cup thus far. Crimson & Jax Dane defeated Caleb Konley & Jay Bradley in a qualifying match at the NWA’s pop-up event last month, and Villain Enterprises (PCO & Brody King) got a spot in the Crockett Cup by winning ROH’s Tag Wars tournament.

Jim Cornette, Joe Galli, and Ian Riccaboni have been announced as the commentary team for the Crockett Cup. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson), The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton, Dennis Condrey, Stan Lane & Cornette), Nikita Koloff, and Magnum TA will also be making appearances in Concord.

Jim Cornette doing commentary for Crockett Cup, legends to appear

The NWA has revealed the commentary team for the return of the Crockett Cup tag team tournament.

In a video uploaded by the NWA today, Jim Cornette announced that he’ll be doing color commentary for the event. The NWA’s Joe Galli and ROH’s Ian Riccaboni will be calling the show with him.

The NWA is partnering with ROH for the Crockett Cup. It’s taking place at Cabarrus Arena in Concord, North Carolina on Saturday, April 27.

Cornette and Galli were also on commentary for the NWA’s 70th Anniversary Show this past October.

Cornette also announced that The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson), The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton, Dennis Condrey, Stan Lane & Cornette), Nikita Koloff, and Magnum TA will be appearing at the Crockett Cup.

Jax Dane & Crimson qualified for the Crockett Cup by defeating Caleb Konley & Jay Bradley at last month’s NWA pop-up event. Villain Enterprises (PCO & Brody King) then became the second team to qualify for the Crockett Cup by winning last month’s ROH Tag Wars tournament.

Cornette noted that there will be teams from ROH, the NWA, Mexico, Japan, and all over the globe in the Crockett Cup. Tickets for the show go on sale for HonorClub members at 10 a.m. Eastern time tomorrow (Wednesday, February 6). They’ll go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Eastern this Friday.

NWA partnering with ROH for return of Crockett Cup

The NWA is partnering with ROH for the return of the Crockett Cup.

It was announced on Wednesday that the 2019 Crockett Cup will take place at Cabarrus Arena in Concord, North Carolina on Saturday, April 27. The NWA also revealed that they’re partnering with ROH for the tag team tournament.

The return of the Crockett Cup was announced at the NWA 70th Anniversary Show this past October. The first qualifying match for the tournament will be held at the NWA’s pop-up event in Clarksville, Tennessee this Saturday.

The NWA noted that further information on the Crockett Cup, the promotions affiliated with it, the teams that will be participating in it, and when tickets will go on sale will be announced in the next few weeks.

The tournament is also in association with the Crockett Foundation.

In 1986, the Road Warriors won the inaugural Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup Tag Team Tournament. Dusty Rhodes & Nikita Koloff won the Crockett Cup in 1987, and Sting & Lex Luger won it in 1988.

NWA’s Crockett Cup tournament to return in 2019

The Crockett Cup will be making its return next year.

Road Warrior Animal made the announcement tonight after the team he was managing (Jax Dane and Crimson) defeated the Kingdom of Jocephus (Shannon Moore and Crazzy Steve). There wasn’t a specific date for the return of the tournament other than it would be held in 2019. It will be held in association with the Crockett Foundation, which helps provide services to military veterans with mental disorders.

The tournament ran for three years in the 1980s under Jim Crockett Promotions, first starting in 1986. The Road Warriors won the inaugural tournament, with the Superpowers (Dusty Rhodes and Nikita Koloff) winning in 1987. The last tournament, held in 1988, had the team of Lex Luger and Sting defeating Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard in the finals.

In the past, the tournament was held under single elimination rules, consisting of 24 (22 in 1988) teams.
