AEW has received more mainstream attention following the anti-ICE chants heard recently on Dynamite.
CNN published an article in its business section on Saturday covering the chants. The piece included comments from Eero Laine, a professor of theatre at the State University of New York at Buffalo who studies the history of professional wrestling. Laine said what makes the anti-ICE chants notable is that they are not directly tied to what is happening in the ring and are not part of the usual repertoire of wrestling chants.
Laine said the anti-ICE chants, “are interesting in that they support a political stance associated with one of the wrestlers, but they are not necessarily directly related to what’s happening in the ring. And the chant is not part of the repertoire of standard wrestling chants.”
Laine also says in the article that at the end of the day, wrestling is about getting people’s attention, and referenced the title of Eric Bischoff’s book, “Controversy Creates Cash.”
“That’s the bottom line with wrestling, it’s attention,” Laine said. “They’re selling attention.”
Laine added that wrestlers can “embody” ideas, allowing fans to cheer for or boo against them during a match.
“You can actually watch two ideas fight each other in the ring, and you can cheer and boo for each of them,” he said. “So there’s a kind of morality play at work in the ring.”
The article noted that representatives for Brody King and MJF did not respond to requests for comment, nor did AEW or WWE.
The CNN article also stated that WWE and AEW are in a “politically-shaded” rivalry, with the article disclosing Warner Bros. Discovery’s minority stake in AEW.
CNN’s Michael Ballaban wrote:
“The embrace of contemporary issues is part of a larger, politically shaded rivalry playing out in the industry, between the 7-year-old AEW and the industry’s ruling juggernaut for generations, WWE (Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent corporation, owns a minority stake in AEW).”
In Friday’s edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer noted that neither WWE or AEW want to be seen as favouring one side or the other regarding politics.
Meltzer wrote:
“The problem is that there were people who want AEW to be the anti-WWE organization and see WWE’s ties to Trump, but both AEW and WWE badly don’t want to be seen favoring one side or the other for fear of alienating a large percentage of their audience, although it is harder with WWE because of Paul Levesque’s association with Trump and Linda McMahon’s history with WWE and being Levesque’s mother-in-law.”
The viral-video chants of “F**k ICE” from the crowd at an All Elite Wrestling bout earlier this month were the latest, loudest sign of a shift within pro wrestling. https://t.co/4xfbIgPdjJ
Dave Meltzer and I are back with the Friday edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, talking about the big news from today’s issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
We dove into part one of our look at the 2025 WON Awards in addition to hitting on some other topics including:
Wrestling Observer Live with Bryan Alvarez is back with tons to talk about including an update on why Brody King wasn’t at Dynamite last night, tons of thoughts on AEW at the moment, the full Dynamite report, WWE concerned about WrestleMania ticket sales and looking at ALL THE WRONG ISSUES, and tons more! A fun show as always so check it out~!
After speculation that Warner Bros. Discovery was an influence in Brody King not appearing live on Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite, WBD issued a release denying it.
King and MJF appeared on Dynamite via video Wednesday to promote their AEW World title match at this Saturday’s Grand Slam Australia. That followed the prior week when there were loud anti-ICE chants before King’s title eliminator bout with MJF on a live Dynamite that went viral on social media afterward.
During Wednesday’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer speculated that the reason King wasn’t live was the fear of more anti-ICE chants, saying, “This is again not a Tony (Khan) call. This is from above. You know what it is. Nobody wants to get on (U.S. President Donald) Trump’s bad side. If it wasn’t for that, nobody would care. It’s just a chant but unfortunately, they (WBD) have got a company they are trying to sell and get regulatory approval from a guy who is going to take that stuff personal. That’s just how it is.”
After that quote went viral, WBD issued the following Thursday afternoon:
“Warner Bros. Discovery did not have any involvement in Brody King’s upcoming AEW schedule. Any speculation to the contrary is categorically false. Brody is scheduled to appear during the next AEW event, which will air this Saturday on TNT and HBO Max.”
Meltzer also published some thoughts on X:
Those at AEW have said nobody from WBD asked them not to use Brody King on last night's show and this was just how it was booked to only use him in a video package. We had heard over the weekend that there were concerns about how much pub the situation had gotten from the WBD…
MJF and Brody King have both responded to NBC News coverage of the crowd chants at Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite.
As the main event was set to begin, the crowd at The Pearl Theater in Las Vegas began chanting “F*** ICE.” Several news outlets including NBC News, TMZ, and others have covered the story.
On Thursday, NBC News wrote, “Fans at an All Elite Wrestling match broke out into an anti-ICE chant that briefly paused the pro-wrestling match and appeared to startle one of the wrestlers in the ring.”
“The world champion wasn’t startled. He’s better than you and you know it. Watch @AEW Wednesday night on TBS and streaming on HBOMAX. And watch AEW on Saturday nights on TNT and streaming on HBOMAX.”
King responded to the same NBC News post, writing:
“I’m glad that we could both see how visibly frightened @The_MJF was of me. Watch me end his title reign next Saturday 2/14 across the world at Grand Slam Australia on TNT and streaming on HBOMAX. @AEW”
Referee Bryce Remsburg also indicated on social media on Thursday that he may have delayed the opening bell to allow the chants to be heard for longer. He wrote, “It seems like the referee may have waited to ring the bell so these could resonate longer? Oh no. Whoops.”
Before Wednesday’s match against MJF on Dynamite, Brody King shared that his recent fundraising efforts for the Minnesota Immigrants’ Rights Action Committee Education Fund through Headlocked Comics and Edgemen Printing had raised $58,904.09.
King defeated MJF following a distraction by Hangman Page in the main event of Wednesday’s show. They’ll meet again for the title at Grand Slam Australia on February 14.
I’m glad that we could both see how visibly frightened @The_MJF was of me.
Watch me end his title reign next Saturday 2/14 across the world at Grand Slam Australia on TNT and streaming on HBOmax. @AEW
Wrestling Observer Live with Bryan Alvarez and Filthy Tom Lawlor is back with tons to talk about including a look at AEW Dynamite, Andrade and his potential title match, Kenny Omega, AJ explains why he didn’t put his gloves in the ring, Sponsorship Snackdown, and tons more! A fun show as always so check it out~!
As the main event of AEW Dynamite was about to begin last night, it appears that referee Bryce Remsburg gave fans an extra moment to continue chanting before ringing the bell.
The Dynamite main event on Wednesday saw AEW World Champion MJF face off against Brody King in a title eliminator match. Before the bell rang, the fans in Las Vegas broke out in a “f*** ICE” chant, which has drawn attention today extending outside of the wrestling bubble. King is a vocal critic of ICE (United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and has released merchandise calling for the law enforcement agency to be abolished.
Remsburg was the referee for last night’s match and indicated that he delayed signaling for the opening bell to ring so fans could have more time to chant.
It seems like the referee may have waited to ring the bell so these could resonate longer? Oh no. Whoops.
“It seems like the referee may have waited to ring the bell so these could resonate longer?,” Remsburg tweeted in response to a clip of the moment. “Oh no. Whoops.”
The role of ICE has been a significant point of contention in Donald Trump’s second presidential term, with criticism of the organization ramping up following the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis last month.
King was the victor of last night’s Dynamite main event, setting the stage for him to challenge MJF for the AEW World Championship at Grand Slam Australia on February 14.
Lot of attention and new followers today, and want to keep the kind vibes going and pay it forward.
After a shocking squash match, AEW World Champion MJF will defend against Brody King at this month’s Grand Slam Australia in Sydney.
King defeated MJF in a World title eliminator that headlined Wednesday’s Dynamite, one that King won in mere minutes thanks to a distraction assist from Hangman Page. King took advantage with his apron sleeper and after getting MJF back in the ring, he hit his gonzo bomb for the quick victory and the title shot.
Page and Andrade El Idolo will also square off on the card for the right to challenge the World Champion at March’s Revolution. Those two men, MJF and King were all part of the show’s final segment that saw King standing tall.
It will be the third title defense for MJF and the first appearance in the country for the champion. King is looking for his first AEW singles title in this, his first AEW World title shot.

All eyes are on the AEW World Championship heading into #AEWGrandSlam Australia!
AEW World Champion MJF will face Brody King on next week’s AEW Dynamite in an eliminator match with big implications for next month’s Grand Slam Australia.
Made during Wednesday’s Dynamite, a King victory in Las Vegas will give him a title shot against MJF in Sydney, Australia, for the second-ever Grand Slam show in the country.
Since MJF retained the title over Bandido earlier this month, King has put MJF in his crosshairs and called for a match last week which MJF quickly shut down. The champion spoke on Wednesday and was quickly interrupted by King who eventually revealed he and Tony Khan’s conversation about the match.
It will be the first singles match between the two in AEW and their first since a 2018 bout in MLW. They have shared the ring a few times in AEW, most notably in a four-way at last July’s 300th episode of Dynamite.
Next Wednesday will also feature the return of the Young Bucks to in-ring action against opponents to be named.

AEW World Champion MJF vs. Brody King title eliminator
Darby Allin praised Brody King during a recent interview.
The Orlando Sentinel spoke with Allin as part of a feature it ran last week on King. Allin and King met when they were both working for MLW in 2017/18, and were also attending hardcore music events at the time. Speaking with Orlando Sentinel reporter Jay Reddick, Allin said he believes King should have been part of AEW from the promotion’s start in 2019.
“He’s a guy who I thought should have been in AEW from year one,” Allin said. “He understands that there’s no phoning it in, no taking it easy. Every night he goes out there, he performs literally to his limit, and it’s cool to see that he’s finally taking off.”
At the time AEW launched, King was working with Ring of Honor and the NWA. He was part of Villain Enterprises in ROH alongside Marty Scurll and PCO. King made his AEW debut on the January 12, 2022 edition of Dynamite, aligning with Malakai Black.
On AEW programming recently, commentary has mentioned that should Bandido win the AEW World Championship from MJF at Maximum Carnage, King would likely be granted a title shot by his Brodido tag partner.

— Drew McIntyre beat Cody Rhodes in the main event of Smackdown from Berlin earlier today. In the third match, the cage match, Jacob Fatu returned and attacked both McIntyre and Rhodes. While he was brawling with Rhodes, McIntyre got out the door to win. We’ll have more this week regarding how this relates to WrestleMania which was scheduled as Reigns vs. Rhodes. I thought McIntyre kind of had to win this match and it was clearly done to make Rhodes not really having fairly lost while McIntyre didn’t have to lose again. This match airs commercial free in the U.S.
— Other results:
Trick Williams b Rey Fenix
Giulia b Alexa Bliss to keep the U.S.title
Solo Sikoa & Tama Tonga & Tonga Loa & Talla Tonga b Wyatt Sicks to set up a tag tite match

The winner of that match faces Drew McIntyre for the WWE title at the Royal Rumble show on 1/31 in Riyadh.
— Elton Prince confirmed our story in the current issue about his neck injury noting he’s had two level neck fusion surgery on Thursday.
— A lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court in Connecticut against WWE for $5 million claiming WWE misled customers into thinking they could watch PPV’s for free if they already got ESPN through their cable systems in promotion of Wrestlepalooza. The complaint lists statements on WWE television ESPN press releases and a Nick Khan podcast interview with John Ourand where he claimed that if you got ESPN there would be no additional charge to view the major shows. The suit alleges bait-and-switch.

“I look at things in a very human way of what I feel is right and wrong,” King said. “I like trying to stand up for people who don’t have the voice to speak up for themselves.”
— Ian Carey’s report on the pro wrestling odds for this week that’s usually in the issue is here today. We should note Cody Rhodes was a -400 favorite to beat Drew McIntyre and that didn’t happen.
ODDS FOR THIS WEEK
Roman Reigns is the current betting favorite to win the Men’s Royal Rumble match at +165. That is up significantly from the +750 he was listed at in November. Gunther has also made a significant jump and now has the second-highest odds at +200 after previously being listed at +600.
Sami Zayn was previously the favorite to win the Rumble at +150, but his odds have since moved out to +400. Bron Breakker was previously the second favorite at +175 and now sits tied with Zayn at +400.
After Zayn and Breakker, LA Knight has the next-highest odds at +600. CM Punk was once listed at +400, but his odds have drifted to +1000. There is a significant drop-off after that, with Seth Rollins and Oba Femi both listed at +1800, Dominik Mysterio at +2000, Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton each at +2500, and then Drew McIntyre at +2800 after previously being listed at +750. The Rock is also listed at +3300.
For the Women’s Royal Rumble, the odds still point to a three-way race between Liv Morgan at +100, Bianca Belair at +200, and Rhea Ripley at +300.
After that, there is a notable drop-off with Charlotte Flair at +1000, Lyra Valkyria at +1200, and IYO SKY at +1400. After another drop-off, Tiffany Stratton and Jade Cargill are each listed at +2000. Nia Jax, Chelsea Green, and AJ Lee are each listed at +2200, while Asuka is listed at +2500.
As for last week’s results, Damian Priest was a -260 favorite when he defeated Aleister Black, who was listed at +170, in an ambulance match on the 1/2 SmackDown. Rhea Ripley, IYO SKY, Charlotte Flair, and Alexa Bliss were -165 favorites when they defeated The Kabuki Warriors, Lash Legend, and Nia Jax, who were listed at +120.
On the 1/5 Raw one-year anniversary show, CM Punk was a -280 favorite when he defeated Bron Breakker, who was at +180. Rhea Ripley and IYO SKY were -350 favorites when they won the Women’s Tag Team titles from The Kabuki Warriors, who were listed at +225.
There was notable movement in the Oba Femi vs. Leon Slater match at NXT New Year’s Evil leading up to the 1/6 show. Femi had been listed as a -1000 favorite, but after it became known he’s headed to the main roster, those odds fell back to -350. This may have reflected a belief that Femi would drop the title prior to debuting on the main roster rather than vacate it after retaining. Jacy Jayne was also a -200 favorite when she retained the NXT Women’s Championship against Kendal Grey, who was listed at +150.
— Dana White said that the 1/24 bantamweight title match with Kayla Harrison defending against Amanda Nunes will be the biggest women’s fight of all-time. It definitely won’t be the one with the most interest in history, but it is the biggest women’s fight that can be made in the current period of time.
— Arena Mexico tonight has a loaded show:
Angelito & Kalgua & Pequeno Magia vs. Full Metal & Pequeno Polvora & Rostro de Acero (rematch of a match of the month from last year)
Calavera Jr. I & II vs. Robin & Polvora – Robin faces the guy who unmasked him last Friday
Max Star & Futuro vs. Euforia & Mephisto (rematch of a match of the month from last year which was loaded with high flying)
Star Black & Fugaz & Explosivo vs. Barboza & Difunto & ? (rematch of a match of the month from last year but last year’s match Zandokan Jr., who is out after knee surgery. The ? will be the newest member of Galleon Fantasma to be introduced, who is from Guadalajara)
Mascara Dorada vs. Titan with a 10:00 time limit
Mistico vs. Barbaro Cavernario for the CMLL light heavyweight title
— As of this writing the show has not sold out. So that streak could end tonight.
— Last night’s show at Arena Neza with Mistico & Mascara Dorada vs Bandido & Soberano Jr., sold out with 2,000 fans. The local newspaper in Neza reported that Misitico’s team won, the atmosphere was fantastic and the match went more than 30 minutes. Komander & Atlantis Jr. faced Hechicero & Ultimo Guerrero in the semi.
— Samantha Irvin turned 37 today. Ruby Soho turned 35. Promoter Ed McLemore was 63 when he died 47 years ago today. Cocoa Samoa was 61 when he died 19 years ago today. (thanks to Tony Richards)
— Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson will be on tomorrow’s Memphis Wrestling TV show.
— Patsy Gilliland, who wrestled at Pat Lyuda from 1958-1962 as part of Moolah’s troupe, passed away back on 11/3 at the age of 85. She wrestled in the U.S.and Mexico during that period.

Bandido says he’ll always be by Brody King’s side.
King and Bandido lost the AEW World Tag Team Championships to FTR at Full Gear, concluding Brodido’s three month reign with the belts. Following the loss, Bandido shared a message to his partner on Instagram:
“Hermano!! I write this to say thank you for everything!! Tonight was not our night but we went so far! In the beginning, nobody believed in us. Now, we made wrestling history!!! So don’t be sad. The diamond was discovered & it’s impossible to cover its brightness!! Remember you taught me how to never stop fighting!!! And that’s what we need to do now! I love you hermano! And I will always be by your side!”
Brodido won the titles in a three-way match at AEW All In: Texas against FTR and the then-champions Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin. Throughout their 90-day reign, they successfully defended the titles against Claudio Castagnoli & Wheeler Yuta, Galeon Fantasma in CMLL, against JetSpeed, the Young Bucks and Hechicero & Josh Alexander in a four-way at All Out, and GOA’s Bishop Kaun & Toa Liona. Their final successful title defense came against Konosuke Takeshita and Kazuchika Okada at WrestleDream.
Full Gear was the 18th time the AEW World Tag Titles have changed hands. FTR and The Young Bucks are the only teams to have won them more than once, having each had three reigns with FTR’s win on the pay-per-view.
AEW Tag Team Champions Brodido will be working The Good Brothers in an indie match later this month.
It’s been announced that a non-title bout between Brody King & Bandido and Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson will take place in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on Saturday, November 29. The match is part of the annual WrestleCade SuperShow — which is a Thanksgiving weekend tradition in Winston-Salem during the WrestleCade convention.
🚨See The Good Brothers vs Brodido at the WrestleCade SuperShow, part of #WrestleCade Weekend.
The show is happening at the Benton Convention Center and will be broadcast via Title Match Network. Also announced for the card is a singles bout with Killer Kross (w/ Scarlett Bordeaux) facing Psycho Boy Fodder (w/ Angelina Love).
Originally put together as a makeshift team, Brodido have thrived in the AEW tag division, becoming champs this August. They have a title defense coming up soon against FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler) at AEW’s Full Gear pay-per-view on November 22.
This will be the first time Brodido have faced The Good Brothers. Gallows & Anderson — who have experience in WWE, NJPW, TNA, AEW, and more — are set to debut for MLW on November 20.
WrestleCade 2025 is being held from November 28-30, with Sting, Trish Stratus, Kazuchika Okada, Jushin Thunder Liger, The Hardys, and Arn Anderson among those who will be attending the convention portion of the weekend.
A new match for the AEW Tag Team titles have been set.
CMLL revealed the poster and card for this coming Friday’s event in Mexico City. Bandido and Brody King will defend their titles against the team of Zandokan Jr. and Difunto. This will be their second title defense since winning the titles in a three-way match at AEW’s Forbidden Door event last month.
