WWE to re-air Undertaker-Styles Boneyard Match on SmackDown

As part of a “Tribute To The Undertaker,” WWE will air Undertaker and AJ Styles’ Boneyard Match from WrestleMania 36 on this week’s episode of SmackDown.

“With the WWE Universe still buzzing over the final chapter of WWE Network’s groundbreaking documentary Undertaker: The Last Ride, SmackDown will feature a special ‘Tribute To The Undertaker’ this Friday night,” WWE announced tonight.

“As part of the special recognition, the astonishing Boneyard Match between The Deadman and AJ Styles will air on television for the first time. As Superstars, legends, celebrities and fans have expressed their support for the sports-entertainment icon, the blue brand now gets to share the same message: Thank you, Taker.

“Join SmackDown in honoring The Undertaker and much more in another action-packed Friday night on FOX at 8/7 C”

The finale of the WWE Network’s Undertaker: The Last Ride series aired on Sunday. When talking about his future on the episode, The Undertaker said he has “no desire” to return to the ring. If Undertaker doesn’t return, the Boneyard Match will have been his final match.

Styles defending his Intercontinental title against Drew Gulak, Sheamus presenting “a toast to Jeff Hardy,” and Universal Champion Braun Strowman responding to Bray Wyatt have been announced for tomorrow’s SmackDown but aren’t currently being advertised on WWE.com. They aren’t listed on the preview for the show and the articles about them currently are no longer accessible.

This week’s SmackDown has been set to be taped at the WWE Performance Center tomorrow. In his report yesterday about multiple people in WWE testing positive for COVID-19, Dave Meltzer wrote that the Friday and Saturday tapings for two weeks of Raw and SmackDown were still scheduled as of then.

WrestleMania 36 notes: Boneyard match & Firefly Funhouse producers

On Sunday’s post-WrestleMania edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer gave a few notes from WrestleMania weekend.

  • He said that Michael Hayes was in charge of the Undertaker-AJ Styles boneyard match, but that Paul Levesque also was heavily involved as well. As speculated, Jeremy Borash was involved as well. Borash and Matt Hardy were the minds behind the Final Deletion segments.
  • Meltzer said that for Sunday’s Firefly Funhouse segment between “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt and John Cena, both Bruce Prichard and Wyatt were the creative leads. However, He was told a lot of changes were made by Cena “for the better”.
  • He was unsure who helpd produce and put together the Edge-Randy Orton last man standing match.
  • Meltzer said that the finish for the Raw women’s champion Becky Lynch-Shayna Baszler match was designed to protect Baszler. Their feud isn’t over, but it doesn’t appear the two will keep it going. However, Meltzer said there is a future between the two.

For the first time ever, WrestleMania was taped at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, and presented over two nights this weekend due to the coronavirus pandemic. While tonight’s Raw has already been taped, it’s unknown how or where this Friday’s SmackDown show on Fox will be addressed.

Undertaker-AJ Styles boneyard match headlines WrestleMania night one

Night one of the most unique WrestleMania ever was headlined by a main event unlike any other in the show’s history.

The Undertaker and AJ Styles’ boneyard match main evented WrestleMania 36 night one on Saturday. The match was filmed at a graveyard setting and was far more of a cinematic production than a traditional wrestling match.

Undertaker’s theme played and a hearse arrived at the start of the match, but druids opened the coffin and it was revealed to be Styles playing mind games. Undertaker then arrived to the graveyard on a motorcycle and using Metallica’s “Now That We’re Dead” as his entrance music.

Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson were also involved in the match, but Undertaker got the win by burying Styles. After being chokeslammed off a roof, Styles pleaded with Undertaker not to bury him. Undertaker said Styles gave him a hell of a fight and acted like he wasn’t going to bury him, but he then turned around and gave Styles a big boot into the grave.

Undertaker got into the tractor near the grave and poured dirt on Styles. A headstone with Styles’ name on it was unveiled and Styles’ hand was shown sticking out of the grave. Undertaker then rode off in his motorcycle as the show went off the air.

Stephanie McMahon sent out a tweet congratulating everyone after the match: “Congratulations to everyone involved in #WrestleMania night 1, especially @undertaker, @AJStylesOrg, @LukeGallowsWWE @KarlAndersonWWE, @TripleH @Metallica & the entire crew involved in the #boneyard match, it was incredible! #innovation #reimagine #passion I can’t wait 4 part 2!”

John Cena and Bray Wyatt’s Firefly Fun House match at WrestleMania 36 night two on Sunday figures to be presented in a similar fashion to the boneyard match. When WrestleMania was moved to the Performance Center due to the coronavirus pandemic, WWE noted that other closed set locations would be used as well.

A few clips from Undertaker vs. Styles are available to watch below:

Styles to face Undertaker in boneyard match at WWE WrestleMania 36

The first-ever “boneyard match” will be part of the WrestleMania 36 card.

WWE has added the boneyard match stipulation to The Undertaker vs. AJ Styles at WrestleMania. The stipulation hasn’t been explained further, but WrestleMania is being taped at multiple locations in addition to the Performance Center. All of the locations will be closed sets with only essential personnel in attendance.

Styles, Luke Gallows, and Karl Anderson appeared on tonight’s Raw, with Styles cutting a promo mocking The Undertaker and Michelle McCool. Styles said he was going to bring back the Deadman and then challenged Undertaker to the boneyard match.

Styles brought up that he said he was going to bury The Undertaker. Styles said he had the perfect plot picked out for Undertaker — and it’s the same one McCool picked out when she buried his career.

The boneyard match stipulation was then officially announced later on tonight’s show.

WrestleMania 36 is airing on the WWE Network across two nights on Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5.
