Bryan Danielson ‘fully cleared’ for AEW WrestleDream

Bryan Danielson is fully ready for his upcoming dream match against Zack Sabre Jr.

Danielson and Sabre are finally facing off at AEW’s WrestleDream pay-per-view this Sunday (October 1). It will be the first time the two have met in the ring since 2009. They were supposed to wrestle each other at Forbidden Door 2022, but Danielson had to miss that event due to injury.

Danielson suffered a broken arm while facing Kazuchika Okada in the main event of Forbidden Door 2023 this June. He underwent surgery in July and was able to return to the ring in September. Danielson has had three matches in total since then, with two of them being stipulation matches against Ricky Starks.

Danielson told the New York Post that he’s now “fully cleared” for WrestleDream. Danielson says the stipulations for his matches against Starks made it easier for him to protect his arm while coming back from injury.

The match will be the first one Danielson will be fully cleared for after returning early from the broken arm he suffered against Kazuchika Okada at Forbidden Door in June to face Ricky Starks in a strap match at All Out in September after CM Punk’s firing.

Danielson said he has had to do more violent gimmick matches, such as the Texas Deathmatch with Starks on Collision last week because it made it easier for him to protect his arm and because he likes wrestling different styles.

“Our doctors would still not like me to do certain things, but from like two weeks ago when I had the tag match the strength in my hand is coming back way faster than they thought it would, the mobility and all that stuff,” Danielson said. “I still have to be cautious probably for the next year or so. They put a steel rod in my arm. One of the things they said is that it actually makes it more likely to break not where it broke before, but where the end of the rod is. It’s like a fulcrum for the bone to bend against.”

Danielson vs. Sabre is a battle between two of the greatest technical wrestlers of all time. Either Danielson or Sabre has won Best Technical Wrestler in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Awards every year for the past 18 years.

Danielson told the New York Post that he’s blown away by what Sabre does in the ring.

“I’d be like, ‘Why didn’t I think of that?'” Danielson said. “When I was in WWE, a lot of the technical wrestling [Sabre was doing] wasn’t conducive to that style of technical wrestling. But when I was on the independents, I did a lot of that stuff. I would just be blown away by what Zack was doing and I continue to be blown away to this day.”

On Collision this Saturday, Danielson is teaming with Wheeler Yuta & FTR against Starks, Big Bill & Aussie Open. Sabre will be on commentary for the match.

The Collision episode and WrestleDream PPV are both taking place from Danielson’s home state of Washington.

MJF to defend ROH tag titles in handicap match at AEW WrestleDream

The ROH Tag Team title match at WrestleDream is now a handicap match.

After Adam Cole revealed he would need surgery for a broken ankle on Wednesday’s Dynamite, he was about to announce they would have to vacate the ROH Tag Team titles when MJF cut him off. MJF told Cole that if it wasn’t for him, Cole would have never gotten injured and didn’t want to vacate the titles. He then announced he would face the Righteous in a handicap match at WrestleDream this Sunday.

Yuta challenged Starks to a match after confronting Starks on this week’s Dynamite. Yuta told Starks it was wrong of him to put his hands on Starks after the Texas Death match against Bryan Danielson on this past Saturday’s Collision, but told Starks that he was an “entitled prick”. Yuta then issued the challenge for WrestleDream, which was quickly made official by Tony Khan.

Here is the updated card for Sunday:

  • Hangman Page vs. Swerve Strickland

Tony Khan AEW media call: Jade Cargill, Adam Cole status, ‘end of an era’ comments

On the same day when one of his homegrown stars signed with WWE, AEW head Tony Khan spoke to the media Tuesday to hype up this Sunday’s WrestleDream pay-per-view and was asked about Jade Cargill’s new home.

The audio from the call can be found below.

Khan said he has nothing but positive things to say about Cargill, that she would always be welcome in AEW, and wished her the best. He didn’t comment further about efforts to re-sign her.

Khan also was vague on the current status of Adam Cole after the apparent leg injury he suffered while jumping off the entrance ramp on last Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite Grand Slam. Khan said that as of now, the MJF & Cole ROH Tag Team title defense against The Righteous this Sunday is still on, but that they will address Cole’s status on tomorrow’s Dynamite.

While not directly saying the word “no,” Khan said he was unsure where the rumors of him buying NJPW are coming from. He was asked about his voiceover comments on the WrestleDream promo video saying that Sunday would be “the end of an era.” He declined to specify what those comments meant, joking that he wants people to buy the PPV Sunday.

It doesn’t appear that will mean the merging of AEW & ROH as Khan has been happy with how ROH TV has been lately and that newer champions like Eddie Kingston, The Young Bucks & Hangman Page, and MJF & Adam Cole will appear on ROH TV in the future.

Khan answered a question from our Dave Meltzer about rumors of WBD taking an ownership stake in AEW. Khan said he would be open to conversations with partners like WBD, but wants to remain in control of decision-making and voting.

Other notes:

  • Khan said Antonio Inoki’s family will be in attendance Sunday and that he filed the date away in his mind when Inoki passed last year. He hopes the tribute will be an annual event for AEW.
  • He said he’s never said AEW will move to one PPV a month. He isn’t sure what the right number is while saying there is more appetite for AEW content.
  • He said with a streaming service, that would likely be packaged into their next TV rights deal as they don’t want to do a 6-9 month tryout before those come up.
  • Khan said Wardlow is a great star for the company and will “surely be back on AEW TV when the time is right.”
  • Khan would like to stay on WBD “forever” and when asked about whether Fox could be a possible home for AEW, he didn’t feel it was the right time to talk about it. He mentioned how there’s not enough loyalty these days and mentioned the recent WWE post-merger layoffs without directly referencing the company by name.

Five matches added to AEW WrestleDream

Four more matches have been added to next Sunday’s AEW WrestleDream event.

Don Callis on Saturday’s Collision revealed that Will Ospreay will team with Konosuke Takeshita and his newest family member Sammy Guevara against Kenny Omega, Chris Jericho, and Kota Ibushi. This stems from events that took place on Friday’s Ramapge, where Omega made the save for Jericho after Guevara and Takeshita jumped Jericho.

In addition, Christian Cage will defend the TNT title in a two out of three falls match against Darby Allin. On Saturday’s Collision, Allin had a three-way title match won between himself, Cage, and Luchasaurus when Cage posted Allin, allowing himself to pin Luchasaurus. In a backstage interview, Tony Schiavone told Cage he would be defending the title at WrestleDream.

Eddie Kingston in a promo revealed that he will be putting up both the ROH and New Japan Strong titles against Katsuyori Shibata at WrestleDream, saying that he wanted a match that would honor Antonio Inoki.

Julia Hart, who announcers have been pushing as being undefeated for all of 2023, will get a TBS Championship match against Kris Statlander. After defeating Kiera Hogan and misting Skye Blue on Saturday’s Collision, Brody King said that the violence would continue until Hart got a title match.

A four-way tag team match has also been added between Lucha Brothers, Hook & Orange Cassidy, The Gunns, and The Young Bucks where the winning team will earn a AEW Tag Team title match at any time.

Kenny Omega & Chris Jericho challenge Don Callis Family for AEW WrestleDream

In an unexpected union, it appears former rivals will turn partners as Kenny Omega and Chris Jericho issued a challenge to the Don Callis Family for next Sunday’s AEW WrestleDream.

The potential match came together on Friday’s AEW Rampage Grand Slam as Omega came out to Jericho’s aid as Konosuke Takeshita, Sammy Guevara and Callis were attacking him. As Callis was about to hit Jericho with a screwdriver, Omega emerged to run off the heel unit before having a staredown with Jericho.

In a backstage segment, Jericho suggested Omega and recent Callis target Kota Ibushi unite in Callis’ worst nightmare. The three could face Takeshita, Guevara and a mystery partner at the Sunday, October 1st pay-per-view.

The Righteous will look for their first reign as Ring of Honor Tag Team Champions as they face MJF & Adam Cole at the PPV.

Vincent & Dutch won a four-way tag team match on Rampage that included Matt & Jeff Hardy, The Kingdom (Matt Taven & Mike Bennett) and Best Friends (Chuck Taylor & Trent Beretta) to earn the opportunity.

The two have held ROH gold before as they carried the Six-Man titles with Bateman from late-2021 through the summer of 2022.

After winning the titles at last month’s All In, MJF & Cole will be looking for their second title defense.

Here’s the updated card for Seattle, Washington:

Both The Elite and Mogul Embassy will be banned from ringside during the contract signing.

Page & Strickland will square off in a singles match at WrestleDream in Seattle, Washington on Sunday, October 1 on pay-per-view.

FTR vs. Aussie Open added to AEW WrestleDream

The AEW Tag Team title match for WrestleDream is now set.

FTR will defend the Tag Team titles against Aussie Open on October 1 in Seattle. On Saturday’s Collision, Aussie Open quickly defeated PB Smooth and Wes Barkley. They then issued a challenge to FTR, saying that they wanted a match against them at WrestleDream regardless if it was for the Tag Team titles or not. Kyle Fletcher noted that the match would take place exactly one year after their match at Royal Quest, where FTR defeated Aussie Open to retain the IWGP Tag Team titles.

Following their successful title match against The Young Bucks at All In last month, FTR have started an open challenge series on AEW Collision. On this week’s show, they defeated The Iron Savages. Next week’s show will see them defend the AEW Tag Team titles against The Workhorsemen.

Later on Collision, Katsuyori Shibata appeared and announced he would be defending the ROH Pure Championship at WrestleDream. It wasn’t announced who he would face.

Here is the updated card for AEW WrestleDream:

  • Bryan Danielson vs. Zack Sabre Jr.
  • Hangman Page vs. Swerve Strickland
  • AEW Tag Team titles: FTR defend against Aussie Open
  • Katsuyori Shibata to defend the ROH Pure Championship

Swerve Strickland vs. Hangman Page added to AEW WrestleDream

Hangman Page and Swerve Strickland will meet in Seattle.

After Page defeated Brian Cage on Wednesday’s Dynamite, Page called out Swerve who was standing at the entrance and talked about how Swerve said he wanted his spot, yet he had Cage fight his battle. Swerve says he will pick where their fight happens and chose WrestleDream, which will take place in Swerve’s hometown of Seattle on October 1.

Strickland told Page that until WrestleDream, the Mogul Embassy would tune him up. Cage attacked Page again, but the Young Bucks came in for the save, superkicking both Cage and Prince Nana and standing tall with Page.

The feud between Page and Strickland started on last week’s Dynamite as Page was cutting a promo. Swerve interrupted Page and told him that he was coming for his spot that he acted like he didn’t want. Page walked away, but after Swerve brought up his family he ran to the ring to attack Strickland but was laid out by Cage.

Here is the updated lineup for WrestleDream:

  • Bryan Danielson vs. Zack Sabre Jr.
  • Hangman Page vs. Swerve Strickland

Bryan Danielson vs. Zack Sabre Jr. official for AEW WrestleDream

A dream match between Bryan Danielson and Zack Sabre Jr. is finally happening.

AEW has confirmed that Danielson vs. Sabre will take place at next month’s WrestleDream pay-per-view. This is the first match that’s been announced for the PPV. It’s being held in Danielson’s hometown of Seattle on Sunday, October 1.

The announcement of the match was made after Danielson issued a challenge to Sabre during AEW Collision on Saturday night. In his promo, Danielson said he wants to fight the person who calls himself the best technical wrestler in the world — Zack Sabre Jr.

Danielson mentioned on Collision that he told his daughter he would start finishing up his career when she turned seven years old. With his daughter being six now, Danielson knows his time in the ring is running out. Danielson said that, if this is his last year, it will be the most epic year of his career. Danielson then called his shot for a match against Sabre at WrestleDream.

The segment on Collision led to Ricky Starks and Big Bill attacking Danielson. At All Out last Sunday, Danielson defeated Starks in a strap match. It was Danielson’s first match since suffering a broken arm against Kazuchika Okada at Forbidden Door this June.

Danielson vs. Sabre was originally supposed to happen at Forbidden Door 2022, but Danielson had to pull off the show due to injury. Claudio Castagnoli replaced Danielson in the match, making his AEW debut by defeating Sabre.

Either Danielson or Sabre has won Best Technical Wrestler in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Awards for the past 18 years. It was renamed the Bryan Danielson Award after Danielson had to retire from in-ring competition in 2016. After returning in 2018, Danielson has won the award twice.

Sabre is the current NJPW World TV Champion. WrestleDream will be the first time he and Danielson have faced each other since 2009.

WrestleDream is a new addition to the AEW PPV calendar this year. The event is in honor of Antonio Inoki and is taking place on the one-year anniversary of Inoki’s passing.

Tony Khan announces AEW WrestleDream PPV, Full Gear date & location

A tribute to Antonio Inoki has been announced for the anniversary of his passing.

Tony Khan revealed during the All In media scrum that AEW will hold a pay-per-view on Sunday, October 1 in Seattle titled WrestleDream. The date falls on the one-year anniversary of Inoki’s passing.

“I can announce here for the first time that on October 1 at the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, it will be the first-ever WrestleDream,” Khan said. “WrestleDream, one-year anniversary of the passing of wrestling’s greatest dreamer. I thought it would be very fitting and after All Out, you won’t have to wait for Full Gear in November.”

Khan told our own Dave Meltzer that he hopes for NJPW wrestlers to take part in the show.

“I’m hopeful, I’ve talked to them about it. I think they want to participate in the show and send people and they are very supportive of it and that I want to do something for him,” he said.

Khan also confirmed that AEW Full Gear will take place on Saturday, November 18 from the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. It will be the promotion’s third time in the venue and the first on pay-per-view.

AEW files to trademark ‘AEW WrestleDream’

AEW has filed to trademark the name of a potential new wrestling event.

According to records from the US Patent and Trademark Office, AEW has applied to trademark the name, “AEW WrestleDream.”

The purposes listed for the trademark include, “Conducting entertainment exhibitions in the nature of wrestling events; Entertainment services in the nature of production of wrestling programs and events; Entertainment in the nature of wrestling contests.”

An event with a similar name took place on April 1, 1991, involving wrestlers from WWF and Super World Sports (SWS). WWF Champion Hulk Hogan retained his title against Yoshiaki Yatsu in the main event. Genichiro Tenryu defeated Randy Savage, George Takano defeated Bret Hart, and John “Earthquake” Tenta defeated Koji Kitao via disqualification. Minoru Suzuki also wrestled on the card, defeating Apollo Sugawara. The show took place at the World Hall in Kobe, Hyogo, Japan, and drew just under 6000 fans.

SWS was a short-lived promotion run by the Japanese eyeglasses company, Megane Super. However, it is not clear if AEW’s filing is related to 1991’s Wrestle Dream event.
