Grand Slam World title eliminator tournament begins on next AEW Dynamite

A World title eliminator tournament will begin on the Wednesday, September 6 AEW Dynamite.

As announced during this week’s episode, the Grand Slam World title eliminator tournament will kick off on next week’s Dynamite. The winner will challenge MJF for the AEW World Championship at Dynamite Grand Slam on Wednesday, September 20 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York City.

The tournament will have eight competitors, none of whom have been officially announced.

During an in-ring interaction with Adam Cole on this week’s Dynamite, Roderick Strong declared his intention to enter the tournament and win it, but the promotion has yet to officially announce Strong for the eliminator.

MJF defeated Cole in the main event of All In last Sunday to retain the World title. MJF & Cole will team on this Sunday’s All Out pay-per-view in defending their ROH World Tag Team Championship against the winners of a tag team battle royal on this Friday’s Rampage episode.

MJF has held the World title since defeating Jon Moxley for the Championship at last November’s Full Gear pay-per-view.

Ricky Starks wins AEW World title eliminator tournament

Ricky Starks is set to challenge for the AEW World Championship.

Starks defeated Ethan Page in the finals of the AEW World title eliminator tournament on Wednesday’s Dynamite, earning a shot at MJF’s title at Dynamite: Winter is Coming on December 14.

Starks defeated Page after hitting three spears in a match where his upper body was taped as he sold injuries from matches with Lance Archer and Brian Cage last Friday and Saturday.

Though billed from New Orleans, Starks made his name on the independent wrestling scene in Texas, and Winter is Coming will be held in Garland, Texas.

MJF won the AEW World title from Jon Moxley at Full Gear last Saturday, but was absent from Wednesday’s Dynamite as he was reportedly on set for The Iron Claw film. William Regal announced on Wednesday’s show that MJF will return on next week’s episode in his first official appearance as AEW World Champion.

Ricky Starks advances to AEW World title eliminator tournament finals

The finals for the AEW World title eliminator tournament has been set.

Ricky Starks defeated Brian Cage in a semifinal match at Saturday’s Full Gear Zero Hour pre-show. Starks picked up the win after hitting Cage with the ro sham bo. As a result, Starks will now meet Ethan Page in the finals of the tournament, which was confirmed as taking place this coming Wednesday on Dynamite.

Starks was originally set to have a quarterfinal match against Lance Archer during last week’s AEW Rampage. However, a video was shown on social media showing Archer laying out Starks, postponing the match to this week’s Rampage. Although Archer jumped Starks before the bell rang and dominated the match, Starks was still able to advance to the semifinals after pinning Archer with a spear.

Ethan Page defeated Eddie Kingston and Bandido to reach the finals. He did commentary during Zero Hour and told announcers after Starks won that he was happy he would be facing Starks in the finals.

Ricky Starks advances in AEW World title eliminator tournament on Rampage

Ricky Starks has advanced in the AEW World Title eliminator tournament.

On Friday’s Rampage, Starks defeated Lance Archer after hitting a spear. Archer had attacked Starks backstage prior to the match, with the two eventually brawling their way to the ring. Archer was in control for most of the match until Starks found an opening and connected with the spear.

After the match, Prince Nana and Brian Cage arrived, as Cage will face Starks in the final semifinal match at Full Gear Zero Hour on Saturday. The distraction allowed Archer to attack Starks from behind, eventually chokeslamming him on top of steel steps.

The winner between Starks and Cage will advance to the finals, where they will face Ethan Page. Page defeated Bandido on Dynamite this past Wednesday to advance. The date for the finals was moved from Full Gear to an unknown date in the future.

The match between Starks and Archer was originally set for last week’s Rampage. However, the match was called off after a social media post by AEW showed that Archer had jumped Starks backstage.

Brian Cage, Bandido advance in AEW World title eliminator tournament

Brian Cage and Bandido have advanced in the AEW World title eliminator tournament.

Cage defeated Dante Martin on Friday’s Rampage to advance after hitting Martin with Weapon X. Bandido defeated Rush after John Silver of the Dark Order came out to ringside, distracting Rush long enough for Bandido to score the rollup win.

The winner of Friday’s match between Cage and Martin is set to take on the winner of a match between Lance Archer and Ricky Starks. However, Starks was taken out in an angle that aired on social media, with AEW later announcing the match wouldn’t take place on Friday’s show. It is currently not known when the Starks/Archer match will take place.

Ethan Page was the first to advance in the tournament, defeating Eddie Kingston. He will face Bandido on next week’s Dynamite.

The winner of the tournament, which will be determined at Full Gear on November 19, will receive an AEW World title match at the Winter is Coming Dynamite special, which will air on December 14.

Starks vs. Archer AEW World title eliminator tournament match postponed

An AEW World title eliminator tournament match set to take place on Friday’s AEW Rampage has been postponed to “next week” according to the company’s Twitter account.

Ricky Starks was set to face Lance Archer, but a backstage attack that aired on Dynamite rendered Starks unable to compete.

Given that the tournament finals are set for next Saturday’s Full Gear, it’s assumed the match will happen on Wednesday’s Dynamite with the tournament semifinals happening on Friday’s Rampage.

Ethan Page advanced this past Wednesday with his win over Eddie Kingston. He awaits the winner of Bandido vs. Rush which takes place Friday.

On the other side of the bracket, Brian Cage will take on Dante Martin Friday. The winner will face the winner of Starks vs. Archer.

The winner of the tournament will get their World title shot at December’s Winter is Coming edition of Dynamite, either against current champion Jon Moxley or no. 1 contender MJF as they do battle at Full Gear.

Ethan Page advances in AEW World title eliminator tournament

Ethan Page has advanced in the AEW World title eliminator tournament.

Page defeated Eddie Kingston in a first round match on Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite, earning a spot in the second round. Page will face the winner of Bandido vs. Rush set for Friday’s Rampage episode.

Page used a distraction from Stokely Hathaway to defeat Kingston, securing his place in the next round of the title eliminator tournament.

The tournament will continue on Friday’s Rampage with three matches — Bandido vs. Rush, Ricky Starks vs. Lance Archer, and Brian Cage vs. Dante Martin. The tournament concludes at Full Gear, with the winner receiving a World title shot at either current champ Jon Moxley, or his Full Gear opponent MJF.

The title eliminator tournament winner’s shot will take place at Dynamite’s Winter is Coming episode on December 14.

Second round tournament matches will take place on next week’s Dynamite and Rampage shows.

Bryan Danielson earns future World title shot at AEW Full Gear

In the finals of the AEW World title eliminator tournament at Saturday’s Full Gear, Bryan Danielson defeated Miro to earn a future title shot.

What was expected to be a physical match was indeed just that. Near the end, both men exchanged elbows and kicks, taunting each other to throw them harder. Both men also escaped each other’s submission finisher in the course of the action.

The end came when Danielson caught Miro with a DDT when he was coming off the top rope, knocking him out. He ensnared Miro in a guillotine, but referee Aubrey Edwards called for the stoppage when Miro was out.

With the win, Danielson remains undefeated in his short AEW run and will await the winner of Saturday’s match between World Champion Kenny Omega and Hangman Page. Danielson and Omega went to a 30-minute non-title draw at September’s Grand Slam show in Queens, New York.

Danielson advanced to the finals with wins over Dustin Rhodes and Eddie Kingston while Miro took Jon Moxley’s spot after he pulled out. He defeated Orange Cassidy to get into the finals.

Despite their crossover in WWE, this was only their second-ever singles meeting. The first was a Money in the Bank qualifying match in 2018 that Miro (then Rusev) won.

Miro advances to AEW World title eliminator tournament finals

The finals are set for the AEW World title eliminator tournament at the November 13 Full Gear pay-per-view following tonight’s Dynamite.

Serving as a substitute for Jon Moxley, Miro defeated Orange Cassidy by submission with Game Over to advance to the tournament finals. He will meet Bryan Danielson at Full Gear to determine the top contender to the AEW World Championship.

The semifinals kick off on Rampage on Friday, October 29 with a Bryan Danielson vs. Eddie Kingston bout. Danielson defeated Dustin Rhodes in the first round, while Kingston defeated Lance Archer to advance.

The finals of the AEW World title eliminator tournament will take place at the Full Gear pay-per-view on Saturday, November 13.

Moxley is the only former AEW World Champion in the title eliminator tournament. Moxley held the AEW World title for 277 days in 2020, defeating Chris Jericho for the Championship at the Revolution pay-per-view in February, then dropping the belt to Kenny Omega at the Winter is Coming episode of Dynamite in December.

Danielson, Kingston advance in AEW title eliminator tournament

A semifinal match is set in the AEW World title eliminator tournament following tonight’s Dynamite.

Bryan Danielson and Eddie Kingston won their first round matchups and will face off in a semifinal match on the October 29 episode of Rampage.

Danielson defeated Dustin Rhodes with a guillotine choke in the Dynamite opener. Kingston defeated Lance Archer with a magistral cradle to set up the contest with Danielson.

Kingston and Archer’s match appeared to be cut short following a spot where Archer landed on his head after missing a moonsault. The match was paused as the referee and ringside doctor checked on Archer. Archer got back in the ring and they immediately went to the finish.

Archer later tweeted: “I’ll live! Thank ya Lord!”

Orange Cassidy defeated Powerhouse Hobbs in a first round tournament match on this week’s Rampage. He awaits the winner of the Jon Moxley vs. Preston “10” Vance match, which will take place on Wednesday’s Dynamite in Boston.

The tournament finals are scheduled for the Full Gear pay-per-view on Saturday, November 13.

Cassidy vs. Hobbs, Baker vs. Jay added to AEW Rampage

The AEW World title eliminator tournament will kick off this Friday on Rampage as Orange Cassidy faces Powerhouse Hobbs in a first round match.

Cassidy enters the tournament with an unbeaten streak of nineteen singles matches while Hobbs is coming off a Rampage loss to CM Punk. Before that, he had seven straight wins. The two have clashed before as Cassidy won a 13-second match on AEW Dark in July 2020.

Friday’s show will also see Women’s Champion Britt Baker in non-title action against Anna Jay. This was made after a backstage segment on Saturday’s Dynamite following a verbal turned physical altercation between the two when Baker was making jokes about the Super Kliq defeating the Dark Order.

Those two matches join the previously announced rematch between PAC and Andrade El Idolo. The two first crossed paths with Andrade picking up the win on the post-All Out Rampage as their match from the pay-per-view had to be moved due to storyline travel issues.

All matches are being taped following Saturday’s Dynamite in Miami, Florida.
