Tony Khan ROH media call: Briscoes, TV deal, continued AEW co-promotion

Ahead of Saturday’s Death Before Dishonor pay-per-view, AEW and Ring of Honor owner Tony Khan spoke to the media for an hour Thursday about a variety of subjects including The Briscoes, a possible TV deal, the continued AEW co-promotion, and more.

The full audio is available at the bottom of this post.

The most newsworthy bit was his revelation that former ROH Tag Team Champions The Briscoes are under a long-term contract. He used the term “exclusive,” but it’s unknown as of now if that means exclusive to ROH (meaning no AEW) or exclusive to his employ. The team was recently dropped from an Impact Wrestling match on short notice with the explanation of an injury.

Here are some other interesting notes from the call:

  • Similar to when AEW began to expand their programming, Khan expects the roster size to grow once they get a TV deal.
  • On the TV front, there is no new news, but they are continuing talks with Warner Bros. Discovery. Getting a deal done is important to him, but he won’t do it until the distribution deal is right for everyone involved. He said Bleacher Report carrying Saturday’s show is a good first step toward that.
  • The pre-orders for Saturday are good, but are on a different pattern than AEW PPVs. He said it will be one of the strongest in ROH history and that the combined numbers for Supercard of Honor and Saturday’s show will be the best in ROH history.
  • The co-promotion and presence of ROH on AEW TV will continue and that it’s been good for both brands. He would love the weekly focus to be on ROH’s weekly TV product at some point, but likes the idea of ROH champions involved in AEW.
  • More matches will be announced for Saturday’s main card and pre-show.
  • Once ROH gets TV, Khan is open to doing bigger venues for PPVs and big TV tapings.
  • The live gate for Saturday is already better than Supercard of Honor and could end up as their best of all time.
  • It’s likely there will be collaboration between ROH and NJPW in the future in addition to all three companies collaborating in the future.
  • Colt Cabana will be involved in Saturday’s show. Khan was asked about the relationship between Cabana and Punk and declined to answer.

Tony Khan confirms The Briscoes are signed to ‘long-term’ ROH contracts

The Briscoes are factored into the long-term plans for Tony Khan’s Ring of Honor.

On a media call to promote this Saturday’s ROH Death Before Dishonor pay-per-view, Khan confirmed on Thursday that The Briscoes (Jay & Mark Briscoe) are under long-term contracts with ROH. The Briscoes are challenging FTR for the ROH Tag Team titles in a two-out-of-three falls match at Death Before Dishonor.

Khan spoke about The Briscoes’ contract status when asked if there are any wrestlers signed to ROH full-time who aren’t currently appearing on AEW television.

“The Briscoes are under contract to Ring of Honor and they’re long-term contracts,” Khan said. “And I think there are some other developmental wrestlers, but really the key, probably the biggest names, that are exclusively signed to Ring of Honor are The Briscoes. They are some of the biggest names in Ring of Honor history. They are Hall of Famers. There are some others, but I think that would be a great example of a key act where they haven’t really appeared in AEW yet but they are signed to Ring of Honor and me.”

Fightful reported this March that a “person of influence” within WarnerMedia didn’t want The Briscoes signed to AEW because of homophobic tweets that Jay Briscoe had made in 2013. Jay again apologized for those tweets during a March appearance on the Battleground Podcast.

FTR vs. The Briscoes is a rematch from Supercard of Honor, which was the first ROH event of the Khan era. The first meeting between the teams was a match-of-the-year candidate, with FTR defeating The Briscoes to win the ROH Tag Team titles.

The Briscoes are 12-time ROH Tag Team Champions. They were inducted into the ROH Hall of Fame earlier this year as part of the promotion’s inaugural Hall of Fame class.

The Briscoes have also appeared in Impact Wrestling this year, winning the Impact Tag Team titles in May before dropping them to The Good Brothers in June.

Six-Man Tag Team title match set for ROH Death Before Dishonor

The Ring of Honor Six-Man Tag Team titles will return in the Tony Khan era after all.

On Wednesday’s Dynamite, it was announced that The Righteous (Vincent, Bateman & Dutch) will defend the titles against Dalton Castle & The Boys at Saturday’s Death Before Dishonor pay-per-view.

The Righteous defeated Shane Taylor Promotions (Kaun, O’Shay Edwards & Moses) for the belts at last December’s Final Battle. This will be the first time the titles have been defended since then.

Vincent has recently been in Impact Wrestling as part of the Honor No More faction.

In another new match, Allysin Kay will take on Willow Nightingale on the Zero Hour pre-show. This will be a rematch from their August 2021 clash in the ROH Women’s title tournament.

Here’s the current card from Lowell, Massachusetts:

  • ROH World Champion Jonathan Gresham defends against Claudio Castagnoli
  • ROH Women’s Champion Mercedes Martinez defends against Serena Deeb
  • ROH Tag Team Champions FTR defend against The Briscoes in a 2-of-3 falls match
  • ROH TV Champion Samoa Joe defends against Jay Lethal
  • ROH Pure Champion Wheeler Yuta defends against Daniel Garcia
  • ROH Six-Man Tag Team Champions The Righteous defend against Dalton Castle & The Boys
  • Pre-Show: Willow Nightingale vs. Allysin Kay

Jonathan Gresham vs. Claudio Castagnoli set for ROH Death Before Dishonor

A match for the ROH World Championship has been added to Death Before Dishonor

Jonathan Gresham will defend the title against Claudio Castagnoli following the events of tonight’s AEW Rampage. After Gresham had successfully defended the ROH World title against Lee Moriarty, Gresham cut a promo saying for now on he would be appearing on AEW television every week as he is the best technical wrestler in the world. This resulted in Castagnoli coming out, with the two having a staredown.

Gresham turned on Moriarty last week on Rampage, aligning himself with Tully Blanchard and Tully Blanchard Enterprises. His last title defense was at Battle of the Belts II in April, where he successfully defended against Dalton Castle.

Here’s the updated lineup for Death Before Dishonor, which takes place July 23:

  • ROH World Champion Jonathan Gresham defends against Claudio Castagnoli
  • Two-out-of-three falls match: ROH Tag Team Champions FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler) defends against The Briscoes (Jay & Mark Briscoe)
  • ROH Women’s World Champion Mercedes Martinez defends against Serena Deeb
  • ROH Television Champion Samoa Joe defends against Jay Lethal
  • ROH Pure Champion Wheeler Yuta defends against Daniel Garcia

Stipulation added to FTR vs. The Briscoes at ROH Death Before Dishonor

FTR and The Briscoes’ ROH Tag Team title rematch will be conducted under two-out-of-three falls rules.

During an open forum between the two teams on Friday, it was announced that FTR vs. The Briscoes at Death Before Dishonor will be a two-out-of-three falls match. Death Before Dishonor is taking place at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Massachusetts on Saturday, July 23.

FTR proposed the two-out-of-three falls stipulation after The Briscoes claimed that FTR were the fresher team in their first meeting. The Briscoes said they were wrestling multiple times per week while FTR only had to occasionally wrestle on AEW Dynamite. The Briscoes called FTR’s a win a fluke and said Supercard of Honor was the luckiest night of FTR’s lives.

In a match-of-the-year candidate, FTR defeated The Briscoes at Supercard of Honor this April to win the ROH Tag Team titles.

Here’s the updated card for the Death Before Dishonor pay-per-view:

  • Two-out-of-three falls match: ROH Tag Team Champions FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler) defend against The Briscoes (Jay & Mark Briscoe)
  • ROH Women’s World Champion Mercedes Martinez defends against Serena Deeb
  • ROH Television Champion Samoa Joe defends against Jay Lethal
  • ROH Pure Champion Wheeler Yuta defends against Daniel Garcia

Women’s World title match official for ROH Death Before Dishonor

A Women’s World Championship match has been confirmed for Ring of Honor’s Death Before Dishonor pay-per-view.

During this week’s AEW Control Center, it was announced that Mercedes Martinez will defend the ROH Women’s World Championship against Serena Deeb at Death Before Dishonor on Saturday, July 23. The PPV is being held at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Martinez became the interim ROH Women’s World Champion at Supercard of Honor this April. She was then crowned as the undisputed champion by defeating Deonna Purrazzo on Dynamite in May.

Martinez & Deeb teamed together to defeat Kayla Sparks & Christina Marie on Rampage last Friday. But Deeb turned against Martinez after the match and set her sights on the ROH Women’s World Championship. Deeb put Martinez in the Serenity Lock before then picking up the ROH Women’s World title belt.

Martinez visually tapped out while Deeb had the Serenity Lock applied.

Deeb vs. Anna Jay will take place on Dynamite this Wednesday.

Death Before Dishonor will be the second ROH event since Tony Khan bought the promotion. Here’s the updated card for the PPV:

  • ROH Tag Team Champions FTR defend against The Briscoes
  • ROH Women’s World Champion Mercedes Martinez defends against Serena Deeb
  • ROH Television Champion Samoa Joe defends against Jay Lethal
  • ROH Pure Champion Wheeler Yuta defends against Daniel Garcia

The two teams last met on April 1 at Supercard of Honor, where FTR defeated The Briscoes to win the ROH Tag Team titles. Although the challenge was issued, the match has yet to be officially announced.

Jay Lethal challenges Samoa Joe for ROH Death Before Dishonor

Jay Lethal formally challenged Samoa Joe to an ROH Television Championship match at next month’s Death Before Dishonor.

On tonight’s Rampage, Lethal cut a promo saying he demanded that Samoa Joe sign a contract for a title match at Death Before Dishonor, noting that he has not been on AEW television in recent weeks. The promo ended with Satnam Singh telling Joe “Jay’s gonna kill you.”

Lethal and Joe have been feuding ever since the finale of Supercard of Honor in April, where Joe made his return to ROH by aiding Jonathan Gresham from an attack by Lethal and Sonjay Dutt. In the weeks since Supercard of Honor, Lethal and Dutt have introduced former basketball player Satnam Singh to their group.

At the Forbidden Door post-show scrum on Sunday, Tony Khan confirmed that Death Before Dishonor would take place on July 23 in Lowell, Massachusetts. It would be the second ROH show held since Khan bought the promotion in March.

This March, Khan announced on AEW Dynamite that he had purchased ROH from Sinclair Broadcast Group. Death Before Dishonor will be the second ROH event since Khan bought the promotion. Tony Khan announces ROH Death Before Dishonor for July 23

The next Ring of Honor pay-per-view is set for next month.

During tonight’s AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door post-show scrum, Tony Khan confirmed that ROH’s next pay-per-view, Death Before Dishonor, would take place July 23 in Lowell, Massachusetts. A venue was not announced for the event, but the show will air on Bleacher Report.

ROH has only held one show since Tony Khan purchased the promotion in March. Supercard of Honor was held during WrestleMania weekend, with the main event seeing Jonathan Gresham defeating Bandido to become the undisputed Ring of Honor World Champion. The show ended with Samoa Joe making his return to ROH, helping Gresham clear the ring after Jay Lethal and Sonjay Dutt turned on Gresham.

On this week’s Rampage, Gresham appeared and seemed to agree to a match between himself and Lee Moriarty. However, Tully Blanchard came in and suggested his men were next in line for a title match. A tag match between Gresham & Moriarty and Tully Blanchard Enterprises was set up for a future show.

Report: ROH Death Before Dishonor PPV planned for next month

ROH is expected to return to pay-per-view in July.

According to a report from Fightful Select, AEW talent have been told that ROH Death Before Dishonor is being planned for the weekend of July 23, 2022. The event is expected to take place in Lowell, Massachusetts.

The first Death Before Dishonor occurred on July 19, 2003 and featured Samoa Joe defending the ROH World Championship against Paul London in the main event. Aside from in 2020, the event has run every year since.

In April, ROH owner Tony Khan spoke to ESPN regarding the future of the promotion.

“I’ve been having more conversations with WarnerMedia about what we can do together to grow Ring of Honor,” Khan said. “I think it would make sense for Ring of Honor to continue as a weekly series and major events, like we just had with Supercard.”

The company also filed to trademark two potential new logos last month.
