NJPW reveals G1 Climax 34 tournament format

NJPW has revealed details on this year’s G1 Climax tournament.

The tournament, which begins on July 20, will return to a 20-man A & B block format. The participants will be revealed during the New Japan Soul tour on June 16. However, only eighteen of the twenty participants will be announced. A participant selection tournament will determine the final slot of both blocks, with the finals of that tournament taking place on July 5.

Another change to this year’s tournament is how the block champions will be determined. NJPW’s website writes:

This year though, it will be the top three finishers that advance. Second and third place finishers will face off in Makuhari August 15, with the top point scorer receiving a bye to Ryogoku August 17. There, semifinals will determine an overall winner for each block, to compete in the grand final August 18.

Last year’s tournament was split into four blocks featuring 32 different wrestlers. Tetsuya Naito ended up winning the G1 Climax 33, defeating Kazuchika Okada in the finals.

Zack Sabre Jr., Kosei Fujita & Robbie Eagles face Clark Connors, Drilla Moloney & LJ Cleary in a trios bout.

The show opens with Tetsuya Naito vs. Callum Newman in a special singles match.

**********

Tetsuya Naito defeated Callum Newman

This was really the match you would expect it to be. Newman tried to keep up with Naito, but the veteran put him down for trying. Simple as.

Newman kicked off Dominion by attacking Naito ahead of the opening bell. This led to a short stint of offense on the floor.

Naito turned the match around by driving Newman into the apron, kicking off a prolonged period of Naito control. After surviving a Frankensteiner, Newman hit a Spanish fly, launching into a short rally. Naito brought it to an end with a Destino variation, but Newman kicked out.

Newman fired up, landing a handful of strikes. Naito responded by brutalizing the neck with strikes of his own before hitting Destino. Naito then pinned Newman to win the match.

TMDK (Kosei Fujita, Robbie Eagles & Zack Sabre Jr.) defeated BULLET CLUB War Dogs (Clark Connors & Drilla Moloney) & LJ Cleary

Fujita and Connors opened the match with a short sequence. When Fujita gained the upper hand, Moloney hit the ring, leading to a short breakdown. With the numbers advantage, TMDK emerged with control.

Once Cleary involved himself, the War Dogs were able to gain some footing. Eagles and Moloney had a competitive back-and-forth before tagging into Fujita and Connors. Fujita retook control for TMDK, forcing Cleary to tag back in.

A stray slap from Cleary enraged ZSJ. ZSJ beat down Cleary, forcing the War Dogs to make the save. The match breakdown that followed was chaotic, leaving Cleary alone to fend for himself.

Cleary tried for multiple quick pins, but ZSJ kicked out time after time. When Cleary attempted a springboard kick, ZSJ reversed into an ankle lock. ZSJ then turned the ankle lock into a suplex before finishing Cleary with the Zack Driver.

NJPW King Of Pro-Wrestling Title Storm Catch Rules Match: Great-O-Khan defeated Yuya Uemura (c)

This “Storm Catch Rules Match” featured a two-rope break/ring-escape limit and a 15-minute time limit.

Uemura launched into an attack on the arm as soon as the opening bell sounded. This forced O-Khan to use his first rope break.

Once O-Khan gained separation, he bit Uemura before locking in a head-and-arm choke. This forced Uemura to use his first rope break, evening the odds.

After the second break, Uemura gained an advantage once more. He continued attacking the arm while utilizing basic slams. O-Khan fired back by biting Uemura again, creating a bit of separation. Uemura responded by bitting O-Khan himself.

Uemura threw O-Khan to the floor, stealing O-Khan’s second allotted escape. This allowed Uemura to lock in an armbar in the middle of the ring that O-Khan had to bridge out of. O-Khan fired back, hitting an eliminator to win the match and the belt.

NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Title: Los Ingobernables de Japon (BUSHI, Hiromu Takahashi & Yota Tsuji) defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi, Oleg Boltin & Toru Yano (c)

The match kicked off with Yano removing a turnbuckle pad before being beaten down by all three of his opponents. Once Oleg tagged in, he returned the favor, taking out all of the challengers with ease.

Tsuji and Oleg had a powerful back-and-forth, trading strikes and slams in an attempt to establish a strong lead. Oleg eventually hit a massive dropkick before tagging out to Tanahashi.

Yano tried to prevent Tsuji from hitting the Geneblast. This led to LIJ hitting the ring, occupying the champions long enough for Tsuji to put Tanahashi back on the defense. He then landed the Geneblast on Tanahashi and pinned him to win the match and the NEVER Six Man belts for LIJ.

For the first time in his career, Tsuji is a champion in NJPW.

NJPW World Television Title: Jeff Cobb (c) defeated Tomohiro Ishii

This match kicked off with both men running at each other. Cobb was the first to score a knockdown, but Ishii responded with a tackle of his own that floored Cobb.

Cobb landed an elbow in the corner, leaving Ishii staring at the ceiling. Ishii fired back with a suplex. Cobb kept Ishii from taking advantage, hitting a German and Superplex in quick succession to retake the lead.

Ishii powered through, landing two suplexes in response. Cobb landed another suplex of his own, followed by a lariat for a nearfall. A standing moonsault from Cobb scored him another nearfall.

Ishii dropped Cobb with a forearm to retake control. When Ishii tried to follow up, Cobb answered with a dropkick and F5000 for another nearfall. Cobb then tried for Tour of the Islands, but Ishii slipped free, hitting a rana and a lariat for a convincing false finish.

With the end in sight, Ishii tried for the brainbuster. Cobb slipped free and transitioned into Tour of the Islands. Cobb hit the finisher and pinned Ishii to retain his NJPW World TV Championship.

G1 Climax 34 Format

This year’s G1 will have two blocks, with a total of 20 participants. A tournament will be held to determine the 10th man in each block.

The top three from both A and B blocks will advance to a final bracket, with the points leader advancing straight to the semi-finals.

IWGP Tag Team Title / NJPW STRONG Openweight Tag Team Title Four Way Elimination Tornado Match: TMDK (Mikey Nicholls & Shane Haste) defeated BULLET CLUB (Chase Owens & KENTA) (c), Guerrillas Of Destiny (El Phantasmo & Hikuleo) (c), & Bishamon (Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI)

The opening minutes of this match featured everyone trying to gain an upper hand. The chaotic opening came to a close once TMDK hit Hikuleo with Tank Buster and pinned him to score the first elimination of the match.

Once GOD was eliminated, Bullet Club took control of the match. They systematically picked apart TMDK and Bishamon with relative ease.

Eventually, Bishamon fired back. Their tandem offense was enough to put Bullet Club on the back foot. Once they had the lead, Bishamon were able to hit Shoto, eliminating Bullet Club.

Once we were down to the final two teams, the intensity increased tenfold. TMDK hit YH with the Power Bottom and Tank Buster, but Goto kicked out of both. In order to close, TMDK hit YH with a super Tank Buster.

For the first time in their careers, TMDK are IWGP champions.

NEVER Openweight Title Match: Shingo Takagi (c) vs. HENARE (Draw)

This match kicked off with an intense, striking battle. Once forearms and kicks proved to be insufficient, the pair turned to headbutts. Once headbutts proved inadequate, they returned to forearms and kicks.

After minutes of back-and-forth striking, Shingo landed a pumping bomber to reset the match. Shingo then worked to maintain his lead with a combination of strikes before attempting Last of the Dragon. Henare avoided the finish, reversing into Streets of Rage.

During Henare’s follow-up, Shingo cut him off with a Last of the Dragon, resetting the match. Shingo and Henare traded more heavy strikes, ending with a leaping headbutt from Henare. This knocked both men to the mat. Neither was able to answer the referee’s count, resulting in a draw.

IWGP World Heavyweight Title Lumberjack Match: Jon Moxley (c) defeated EVIL

This match kicked off with a short brawl on the floor. By the time the action was in the ring, Moxley had a significant lead. Moxley took his time beating down EVIL with next to no challenge until EVIL knocked Moxley to the floor.

Once Moxley was alone on the outside, H.o.T. attacked him, giving EVIL a strong advantage. Back in the ring, EVIL utilized his normal tactics, such as choking Moxley with a shirt, to maintain his lead.

A striking battle let Moxley regain some footing against the challenger. After working EVIL into the corner, Moxley hit him with a piledriver for a two-count. EVIL rolled to the floor to recover, only for Moxley to take him and all of HoT out with a tope.

As soon as it seemed like Moxley got rid of H.o.T., Dick Togo threw a handful of powder into the face of Moxley. EVIL then took Moxley’s head off with a chair before landing a superplex. EVIL then turned to the choke, but Moxley reversed into one of his own.

A mix-up with the referee ended with Moxley eating Darkness Falls. Moxley managed to hold on, securing the Nagata lock. H.o.T. hit the ring to break up the hold, leading to an all-out brawl between the lumberjacks.

EVIL dropped with Moxley with a low blow. This left H.o.T. free to hit Moxley with a triple powerbomb through a table. EVIL then hit Death Rider for a false finish.

After Moxley kicked out of his own finish, he hit EVIL with Everything is Evil. Moxley then grabbed a barbed wire-wrapped bat, which he used to take out all of H.o.T. Once the ring was cleared, Moxley hit EVIL with a cutter, a curb stomp, and a Death Rider on the bat to win the match and retain his belt.

After the match, Moxley cut a promo, opening the door for his next challenger. Naito walked out from the back to challenge Moxley for Forbidden Door.

Best Of The Super Junior 31 Final: El Desperado defeated Taiji Ishimori

The opening feeling out process ended with a moonsault from Ishimori to the floor. Back in the ring, Ishimori whipped Desperado into an exposed corner to cement his lead. He then turned his attention to Desperado’s arm, working it over on the mat.

A back suplex and follow-up tope from Desperado left him in a seemingly-strong position, but it didn’t take long for Ishimori to fire back. After landing a sliding German suplex and a facebuster, Ishimori drove Desperado into the exposed corner and his knee.

Desperado caught Ishimori with a spinebuster. This left Desperado free to focus on Ishimori’s leg before locking in the stretch muffler.

Once Ishimori escaped, he floored Desperado with a destroyer for a match reset. After a short scramble, Ishimori bumped the referee, delivered a low blow, and nearly stole the win with a Gedo clutch. Desperado fired back with a strike, knocking Ishimori to the mat. A back-and-forth forearm exchange followed.

Desperado landed a spear and Pinche Loco for a nearfall. After Ishimori kicked out, he landed a reverse Bloody Sunday for a nearfall of his own. Ishimori tried to follow up with a Bloody Cross, but Desperado pushed him into the exposed corner.

With the end in sight, Desperado landed a snug tiger driver. He then transitioned into Pinche Loco. After hitting Pinche Loco, Desperado pinned Ishimori, winning the match and Best of Super Junior 31.

After the match, SHO came to face the winner. After a bit of back-and-forth, Desperado challenged SHO to make their title bout a steel cage match.

Mercedes Mone vs. Stephanie Vaquer double title match set for AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door

A double title match has been confirmed for Forbidden Door.

During AEW Dynamite, it was confirmed that TBS Champion Mercedes Mone will defend her newly-won title against NJPW Strong Women’s Champion Stephanie Vaquer. The winner of the match on June 30 will leave New York as a double champion.

The match came about after Vaquer made a surprise appearance on last week’s Dynamite. After Mone successfully defended the TBS title against Skye Blue, Vaquer entered the arena stage and had a staredown with Mone, who remained in the ring.

On Wednesday, AEW teased revealing a QR code surprise during Dynamite involving Mone. The code ended up giving fans access to exclusive special merchandise as well as a chance to win a special meet & greet with Mone.

AEW also confirmed the Women’s title match for Forbidden Door between champion Toni Storm and Mina Shirakawa. The two ended up having a confrontation on Dynamite after Shirakawa made the save for Mariah May, who attempted to keep the peace between the two.

Here is the updated lineup for Forbidden Door:

  • AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland defends against Will Ospreay
  • Ladder match for the vacant TNT Championship: Konosuke Takeshita vs. Mark Briscoe vs. TBD
  • Title for title: TBS Champion Mercedes Mone vs. NJPW Strong Women’s Champion Stephanie Vaquer
  • AEW Women’s Championship: Toni Storm defends against Mina Shirakawa

NJPW making Strong titles exclusive to USA shows

Hiroshi Tanahashi has commented on the future of the NJPW Strong titles.

The championships have primarily been defended on NJPW shows in the United States, but have played a role on a few shows in Japan and other countries as well. Eddie Kingston defeated KENTA for the Strong Openweight belt at the Independence Day show at Korakuen Hall last summer. Stephanie Vaquer won the NJPW Strong Women’s title on a Stardom show at Korakuen Hall in March and also defended it at a RevPro/CMLL Fantasticamania show in England last month.

However, Tanahashi recently told NJPW1972.com that he wants to clarify the roles of NJPW’s titles, and that involves making the Strong belts exclusive to shows held in the United States.

Tanahashi said:

“Taking into account the opinions of wrestlers and fans, we want to clarify the roles and concepts of each championship belt, and raise the status of our championships. This will see various forms, but firstly, the NJPW STRONG Championships will be restored to their original roles of being defended only on American events.”

Tanahashi continued:

“Well, first of all, we want to make the STRONG titles American exclusive. Additionally, there have been a lot of new titles of late, and it’s important I think for wrestlers to understand what championships they want to aim toward, and for fans to understand that as well. Each title can have a role in different events, but we want the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship to consistently be the peak and have those roles take place after that.”

Our own Tom Lawlor was the inaugrual NJPW Strong Openweight Champion. He defeated Brody King in the finals of the New Japan Cup USA 2021 to win the belt.

The NJPW Strong Tag Team Championships and the IWGP Tag Team Championships will be defended at NJPW Dominion on Sunday in a triple threat match. Strong Champions El Phantasmo & Hikuleo, IWGP Champions KENTA & Chase Owens, and Hirooki Goto & Yoshi-Hashi will be the three teams in the match.

NJPW owner: AEW relationship is ‘very positive,’ we couldn’t ask for a better partner

NJPW owner Takaaki Kidani believes that his promotion and AEW are “absolutely on an even footing” in their partnership.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Hiroshi Tanahashi addressed his first six months as NJPW president and outlined a 10-point plan to help the company grow. Among those was NJPW strengthening its ties with AEW. Tanahashi said he spoke with Tony Khan while in Las Vegas recently and discussed how NJPW and AEW can continue to collaborate in the future.

Kidani also spoke at the press conference, describing NJPW’s relationship with AEW as very positive. He said NJPW could not ask for a better partnership right now.

Addressing the perception that NJPW is the inferior partner in the relationship, Kidani said that is “not correct.” Kidani believes that the promotions are on an even footing and both offer different strengths. He pointed to NJPW’s history and tradition as one of those strengths, along with the way NJPW develops talent from scratch:

We have a very positive relationship with AEW right now, and there is room for it to evolve further. There are things we can’t talk about just yet, but I think it’s something that can involve other departments within Bushiroad as well.

“I think that this relationship has settled into something that’s a lot more stable in the long run, and a lot of that comes from Tony Khan having a deep fandom and appreciation for NJPW. He has a lot of passion for 90s guys like Hase, and the Steiners. He’s a fan, and both he and his father have an incredible business acumen. Tony Khan’s father started out making Toyota bumpers, and grew his business eightfold in a 10-year span. And the Khans have had all this success not just in wrestling but American Football and the Premier League. With that acumen and their affinity for Japan, there’s a lot that can be done in the future, and I don’t think NJPW could ask for a better partner right now.

“Having said that, there is the perception that NJPW is treated as a sub brand or is looked down on by AEW. Some of that perception of NJPW being behind comes from the economics at the moment. But the truth of the matter is AEW’s strengths and NJPW’s strengths are different. From development of talent from scratch, to a historical and traditional perspective, there’s a lot NJPW can offer that AEW cannot. So there’s a lot that we can do together and while much of it isn’t something we can discuss right now, there’s a lot we will do. But the idea that NJPW is the inferior partner is not correct. We are absolutely on an even footing, and that’s something we’ll prove in the near future.

Kazuchika Okada and Will Ospreay both left NJPW and signed full-time contracts with AEW over the last several months.

Jon Moxley, one of AEW’s top stars, is the current IWGP World Heavyweight Champion for NJPW. Moxley is defending the title against EVIL in a lumberjack match at NJPW Dominion this Sunday.

AEW & NJPW will join forces for their Forbidden Door pay-per-view in Long Island, New York on Sunday, June 30. It’s the third straight year the event has taken place.

Here are all 10 points that Tanahashi detailed in his plan for growth:

  1. Talent discovery and development
  2. Elevating the value of title belts
  3. Reducing/eliminating outside interference
  4. Increasing the prominence and status of NJPW Hontai (the group of wrestlers affiliated with main NJPW instead of a different faction)
  5. Strengthening ties with Stardom
  6. Strengthening ties with AEW
  7. Improving the live fan experience
  8. Improving NJPW World
  9. Improved treatment of personal information (after NJPW lost a USB drive that contained some personal information of fan club members this April)
  10. NJPW sponsorships (improving relationships with current sponsors and introducing new ones)

Two title matches booked for New Japan Soul 2024

NJPW has made the first two match announcements for its post-Dominion summer tour.

After Dominion takes place this weekend, New Japan Soul 2024 will kick off the following week. The first event is being held in Sapporo on Sunday, June 16. A pair of title matches have been made official for the show. An illness forced SANADA out of action in April, but he’s now been medically cleared to return. Finlay is looking to avenge his loss to SANADA from the New Japan Cup 2023 finals.

Tournament losses are also part of the story for Bullet Club War Dogs and TMDK’s Junior Heavyweight Tag Team title match. The New Japan Soul tour runs through Friday, July 5 and features seven events in total. The final night is being held at Budokan Hall.

Jon Moxley reveals allies for IWGP World title lumberjack match

Jon Moxley has found allies in NJPW’s third generation.

Moxley will defend his IWGP World Heavyweight Championship against EVIL at NJPW Dominion in a lumberjack deathmatch. He appeared via video at today’s NJPW Best of the Super Juniors semifinals show at Korakuen Hall and revealed Yuji Nagata, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Togi Makabe, and Tiger Mask will all be lumberjacks in Osaka Jo Hall on Sunday.

Moxley said in the video:

“June the 9th at Osaka Jo Hall, EVIL wants a lumberjack match. He wants all his cronies, the House of Torture, to surround the ring. How is that different than any other night with you guys? This is going to be very different, very different indeed.”

Moxley continued:

“I’m going to have my own set of enforcers to keep law and order. And there will be a need for law and order because this isn’t going to be any lumberjack match, this is going to be a Jon Moxley lumberjack match where there are no limits to what can happen. There are no limits to how out of control it can get. I look to the third generation of NJPW to lay down the law, to beat some respect into the House of Torture. And at the end of the night on June 9 at Osaka Jo Hall, respect or not, I will still be the king of NJPW, I will still be IWGP World Champion.”

Nagata, Tenzan, Makabe, and Tiger Mask then joined Shota Umino in a tag team match, defeating House of Torture’s Dick Togo, Ren Narita, SHO, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, & Yujiro Takahashi.

Semifinals set for NJPW Best of the Super Juniors 31

NJPW Best of the Super Juniors 31 is down to its final four.

The last night of B Block action took place at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo on Friday with Taiji Ishimori and DOUKI securing their spots in the semifinals. With a victory over Hiromu Takahashi, Ishimori topped B Block with a 7-2 record and 14 points. DOUKI defeated Robbie Eagles to finish second with a 6-3 record and 12 points.

On Monday (June 3), Korakuen Hall will host both semifinal matches. It will be El Desperado vs. DOUKI and Ishimori vs. TJP. The winners advance to face each other in the finals, which will headline NJPW Dominion on Sunday, June 9.

Desperado (6-3, 12 points) won A Block while TJP (5-4, 10 points) finished in second.

None of the four wrestlers remaining have won Best of the Super Juniors before. Desperado and Ishimori have made it to the finals but lost.

The winner of the tournament will be in line for a title shot against IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion SHO, who won the title from Desperado this February with a countout victory.

EVIL challenges Jon Moxley to lumberjack match for NJPW Dominion

EVIL has proposed a new stipulation for his IWGP World Heavyweight title challenge against Jon Moxley at NJPW Dominion on June 9.

In a kayfabe interview posted to NJPW’s website Thursday, EVIL proposed a lumberjack stipulation for his match against Moxley set for Dominion in Osaka-jo Hall on Sunday, June 9.

EVIL’s challenge from the interview:

Since this low life mud show ‘wrestler’ wants to run away from any kind of a fair fight under IWGP rules then I have something for him. June 9 in Osaka Jo Hall, a Lumberjack Match for the title. That way he has no escape.

He can talk about gang warfare all he wants, but all he has in his gang of reprobates is that waste of space Umino, right. When he’s trapped in the ring with no way out around him, he’ll see his future is as bleak as that fake title he carries round. If he wants to bring his snot nosed brat with him he can, and we’ll make sure both understand what justice looks like. June 9 in Osaka Jo Hall, I’ll crush you in a Lumberjack Match. Don’t you forget it!

The current lineup for Dominion:

  • Best of the Super Juniors 31 finals: A Block winner vs. B Block winner
  • IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Jon Moxley defends against EVIL
  • NEVER Openweight Champion Shingo Takagi defends against HENARE
  • NJPW World TV Champion Jeff Cobb defends against Tomohiro Ishii
  • Provisional KOPW 2024 Champion Yuya Uemura defends against Great-O-Khan
  • IWGP Tag Team & NJPW Strong Tag Team title elimination match: KENTA & Chase Owens vs. El Phantasmo & Hikuleo vs. Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI vs. Mikey Nicholls & Shane Haste

NJPW Best of the Super Juniors 31 night 11 results, updated standings

The Best of the Super Juniors 31 continued on Thursday with a show at Korakuen Hall.

Today’s event featured the final round-robin matches in A Block.

El Desperado picked up a win over HAYATA in the main event to punch his ticket to the semifinals and clinch the top spot in A Block at 12 points. TJP also advances to the semifinals. As his Aswang character, he defeated Titan on today’s show. He finished with 10 points and in a tie with Titan, Blake Christian, and HAYATA. Since TJP was 3-0 against the competitors he finished tied with, he advanced to the next round.

Here are the quick results from today’s show:

Tournament matches:

  • A Block: Yoshinobu Kanemaru defeated Clark Connors via count-out
  • A Block: BUSHI defeated Kevin Knight
  • A Block: TJP defeated Titan
  • A Block: Kosei Fujita defeated Blake Christian
  • A Block: El Desperado defeated HAYATA

Non-tournament matches:

Other notes from the show:

  • Clark Connors attacked the referee after he was counted out against Kanemaru. The loss eliminated him from being able to advance to the semifinals.
  • TJP wrestled his final round-robin match in the tournament as his Aswang character. He had previously said he needed help from “him” to advance to the semifinals. He beat Titan using the red mist, a Mamba splash, and a running knee to the back of the head. He and Titan shared a fist bump after the match.
  • Kosei Fujita played the role of spoiler in the semi-main event of the night by defeating Blake Christian and eliminating him from the tournament. The win also solidified TJP as advancing to the semifinals on a tie-breaker provided there wasn’t a draw in the main event between Desperado and HAYATA.
  • Desperado praised HAYATA in a post-match promo.
