Tuesday Update

WWE

AEW & Other Wrestling

  • David Bixenspan has an article detailing a sexual misconduct incident that took place in independent promotion PWX prior to Riddle signing with WWE, where he allegedly changed clothes in the women’s locker room in front of other women at a independent show, with Malia Hosaka confirming the incident.
  • “We were all in there, our show was going on,” Hosaka told Bixenspan. “I didn’t know who he was, but I was sitting with my feet propped up and eyes closed. When I opened them[,] he was on my right stripped down to his underwear and I got mad at the lack of respect from today’s generation. For him to come into the locker room to change while the women had the room[,] and to strip down and change was disrespectful. There was a bathroom down the hall that fans couldn’t get to that he could have used. [In m]y generation[,] the men and women respected each other enough to at least ask if it was ok or to ask for privacy. It pissed me off[,] and then his attitude that he had underwear on and that it wasn’t a big deal pissed me off more[,] so I told him how I felt about the lack of respect.”
  • Riddle responded to the allegations in the article. “The PWX thing wasn’t even an incident[.] [T]here was only one locker room (which isn’t uncommon on the indies unfortunately) [and] the promoter told me to change in there[,] so I did. Malia confronted me on my way out, I explained that the promoter told me to go change in there and she talked to the promoter and that was the end of it.”

WOR Video: The Rock makes WWE return on SmackDown

The Rock made his first appearance on WWE TV since 2019 on Friday’s SmackDown.

Bryan Alvarez and Dave Meltzer discussed the opening segment of the show on Monday morning’s Wrestling Observer Radio. SmackDown saw Rock interrupt a promo between the returning Pat McAfee and Austin Theory. A large portion of the segment had to be muted due to The Rock instructing the crowd to chant “a**hole” at Theory, something that Fox censors did not approve of.

“Man, did they need some frickin communication,” Meltzer said. “They decided to build and entire segment of fans chanting “a**hole” without finding out that Fox did not want that on the air.”

Alvarez pointed out that perhaps the segment was meant for people to chant “a-hole” since Theory is from “A-Town”, however Meltzer said they wouldn’t have chanted for that.

“I’m sure live it was really cool, but on television it was kind of a disaster,” he added.

Later, The Rock met with John Cena in a backstage segment, who welcomed him home. The two ended up hugging.

Despite the mishap on television, The Rock would later go on to say that his ovation on Friday was one of the top biggest reactions he ever got walking to the ring.

July 13, 2006 Observer Newsletter: Rob Van Dam, Royce Gracie vs. Matt Hughes

In wrestling’s history, there have been plenty of colorful behind-the-scenes reasons for world title changes. But this week may have been a first.

Rob Van Dam, holding both the WWE and ECW titles after five years of largely being in mid-card limbo, had both titles taken from him due to a change of plans stemming from his being pulled over and charged with possession of marijuana on 7/2 after a show in Huntington, WV. After dropping both titles, he was then suspended for 30 days, joining Kurt Angle as the two top ECW stars serving suspension time. Van Dam’s suspension is without pay, which will cost him more than $20,800 minimum, based on his down side guarantee. It is not known if Angle’s suspension is without pay, although the strong presumption is it would be, and his downside is considerably larger.

In a story that made the national wires and was covered in many newspapers and on several radio stations throughout the country, Robert Alex Szatkowski and Terry Michael Brunk (Sabu) were pulled over for speeding at about 10:15 p.m. that night in Hanging Rock, OH, traveling from the house show that night, presumably to Columbus, OH, where they would likely fly to Philadelphia.

WOR Video: How close were we to The Rock vs. Roman Reigns?

Was The Rock vs. Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39 ‘locked in’?

The Rock claimed that during an interview with Pat McAfee that the match was locked in. However, on Wrestling Observer Radio Friday night, Dave Meltzer said it was not.

“It was never locked in,” Meltzer said.

“It was the favorite match. It was going to be in Los Angeles…late in the year, he basically pulled out, it was a schedule thing,” Meltzer continued.

While The Rock in the interview said ultimately they decided not to do the match this year, he did tease that Philadelphia may be the time and the place where it happens.

“I know he talked about Philadelphia…the ball’s in his court,” Meltzer said. “If he has the time, and with the strike, he may have the time.”

But if the strikes in Hollywood ends before WrestleMania, The Rock could become an extremely busy man. Meltzer said that anything involving The Rock wrestling at WrestleMania is contingent on what his schedule permits. But at the end of the day, The Rock does want to do the match.

“Does he want to do it? One hundred percent yes…he loves pro wrestling.”

WOR Video: The UFC-WWE merger finalizes

It’s official: UFC and WWE are now under one company.

On Tuesday, Endeavor officially merged WWE and UFC to form TKO, a new public company that will put WWE and UFC into one corporate umbrella. Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez discussed what the fallout will be from the deal on Thursday’s Wrestling Observer Radio. One thing is for sure: much like when Endeavor acquired UFC in 2016, there will be cuts as far as employees go.

“There was a lot of bloodletting,” Meltzer recalled when the UFC deal was finalized in 2016. Meltzer did say, however, that he didn’t expect cuts to the main roster.

One major departure already is WWE CFO Frank Riddick, who will leave at the end of September.

“He left the day after the merger with a five million dollar bonus, so maybe he just got the money and has a lot of WWE stock and just decided it’s time to go home and retire, or it could be he knew what was coming,” Meltzer said.

Despite all the changes, WWE is expected to be run the same as it has been for most of the year, with Paul Levesque in charge of creative but will be overseen by Vince McMahon, who will likely make changes.

“Product wise, it’s going to be what it’s been. Paul Levesque is in charge of creative, Vince McMahon can overrule him each week…that’s not going to change as long as Vince is in the picture, and Vince is going to be in the picture until he’s incapacited or something bad happens to him, which I hope isn’t anytime soon,” Meltzer said.

AEW Rampage spoilers from Cincinnati, Ohio: TBS title match

AEW taped matches prior to and after Wednesday’s Dynamite in Cincinnati, Ohio. Results courtesy of PWInsider.

In a dark match that aired prior to Dynamite, Johnny TV & Aaron Solo defeated Brandon Cutler and Colt Cabana.

AEW Rampage:

  • The Lucha Bros. & The Hardys defeated Jeff Jarrett, Jay Lethal, The Butcher, and The Blade
  • The Kingdom defeated Christopher Daniels & Matt Sydal
  • The Acclaimed & Billy Gunn defeated Peter Avalon & The Outrunners.
  • Kris Statlander defeated Jade Cargill to retain the TBS Championship. After the match, both Statlander and Cargill showed respect to one another. The match was set up on last week’s Collision when Cargill made her return, attacking Statlander and holding the TBS Championship up high.

AEW will next head to State College, Pennsylvania for Collision. Next week’s Dynamite will be held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, headlined by MJF defending the AEW World Championship against Samoa Joe, who won the Grand Slam title eliminator tournament finals on Dynamite to earn a title match. Grand Slam Rampage will be taped following the live edition of Dynamite.

WOR Video: Vince McMahon is back

Vince McMahon is back.

Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio Tuesday morning confirmed McMahon returned to Raw on Monday to make changes. He was not backstage at the show, but both he and Triple H made last minute changes to the program.

“Vince McMahon is back,” Meltzer said. “He made multiple changes [to Raw] tonight, there were also multiple changes by [Paul] Levesque at the last minute. A lot of stuff wasn’t advertised, and the reason is they were changing all day long.”

Meltzer said the changes, according to people backstage, were described as “probably changes for the better, but there were many of them.”

McMahon’s return couldn’t have come at a better time, as the merger between UFC and WWE under the Endeavor umbrella begins on Tuesday. Although McMahon won’t own WWE anymore under this deal, he is still very much in charge of the direction of the wrestling aspect of the new company.

“When it comes to wrestling, Ari Emanuel is very willing to say I don’t know wrestling, [McMahon] knows wrestling.”

However, Emanuel, Mark Shapiro, and Nick Khan will be working on WWE’s next television deals. Meltzer said that while it is likely USA will retain Raw and NXT, SmackDown’s future is more uncertain, with Disney and Amazon both in the running while Fox may not be interested in the high price increase WWE wants for their content.

WOR Video: Is Bryan Danielson winding down?

Is Bryan Danielson winding down soon?

That was a subject on Monday morning’s Wrestling Observer Radio. Bryan Alvarez and Dave Meltzer discussed a segment from Saturday’s Collision where Danielson said he had promised his six-year-old daughter that when she turns seven, he will wind down his wrestling career. Danielson signed with AEW back in the fall of 2021.

“He was looking at it like his last contract,” Meltzer said regarding Bryan’s current deal with the company.

“He had always said he never wanted to retire from wrestling,” he added. “He didn’t want a heavy schedule the last couple of years in WWE. Tony [Khan] gave him an even more limited schedule. The AEW schedule works great for him.”

Danielson did not mention retirement in his promo. But it is clear that down the line, he will be working limited dates, whether it be in AEW or anywhere else.

“I would not be surprised if he wrestles here and there and wrestles in other places when it suits him and when he wants,” Meltzer said. “But I also never expected after this contract that he would be wrestling full time.”

Meltzer also believes that this very well may be Danielson’s last contract with AEW.

“I do believe he believes that he is not going to renew,” he said.

Alvarez mentioned that people he’s talked to thinks that Danielson will never really retire from pro wrestling. But signs do seem to indicate he’s winding down.

“When you bring up your daughter and you make a promise to your daughter…I’ve talked to friends of his who said this dude’s never retiring. But the idea of drastically winding down the schedule, I’m pretty sure that’s what he’s going to do.”
