WWE

  • During an appearance on No-Contest Wrestling, Jacob Fatu cut a promo on fans who think he won’t defeat Roman Reigns at Backlash:
    • Let’s keep it 100. He just won it. This is the next PLE. So I can understand why people think, ‘Oh, well, he’s not going to lose. It’s just a match. He’s going to fall in line.’ Nah, that’s ass. All right. That’s ass
    • What y’all think? Y’all know the booking? What y’all think? ‘Oh, Roman Reigns, first title defense against Jacob. There’s no way Roman’s losing it.’ Man, that’s ass.
    • Because check this out, of course y’all going to be watching. Y’all going to be tapped in. So everybody else complaining online about this and that. Hey, hey, hey, I bet you will definitely buy that ESPN app. And I bet you going to be sitting there watching and enjoying the show and not saying a word during the match. So for everybody tapping in like that, come on. Man, come on with it.
  • Fatu added:
    • I can understand why people think I’m not going to win. First PLE, first title defense out of WrestleMania, there’s no way, right? Well, check this out – there was no way Jacob was supposed to be here. There was no way Jacob was supposed to be main event, PLE, Roman Reigns, right out of WrestleMania. But we’re here. And keep it 100. Like I said before, they ain’t never ran into nobody like me.
  • No-Contest Wrestling asked Fatu to name five wrestlers from WWE history that he would like to have main evented WrestleMania against:
    • Bron Breakker
    • Randy Savage
    • Jeff Hardy
    • Mr. Perfect
    • Brock Lesnar
  • Sami Zayn and Stephanie Vaquer called for WWE to change September’s house show in Chile into a PLE after tickets sold out quickly after going on sale.
  • Johnny Gargano announced that he and Candice LeRae’s dog Pawdme passed away after months of battling seizures:
    • I always made the joke that Pawdme’ was my first child. She prepared me for Quill. The real joke is that she’s actually way more high maintenance than her brother. She was SO good to him too. A true big sister. I’lll miss her sleeping between my legs. I’ll miss her zooming around the house with her rope. I’ll miss her sun bathing by the window of my gym.. I’m just really going to miss her. I just hope she knows we tried to give her the best life possible in the short time we had, and she will always hold an irreplaceable spot in our hearts. We love you forever, Tato. Thank you for choosing us to spend your life with.
  • The Miz promoted Backlash with appearances on ESPN’s Get Up, First Take, and The Rich Eisen Show.
  • Danhausen stormed into SportsCenter to help count down the top plays from the day.
  • Kevin Owens turns 42 years old today.
  • WWE Vault put together a video featuring rarely seen Championship Wrestling from Florida footage.

Other Wrestling

  • Actor Nick Offerman was the guest on a new episode of Talk is Jericho.
  • To prepare for his role on Apple TV’s “Margo’s Got Money Troubles,” Offerman – who didn’t know much about wrestling going in – read Bret Hart and Mick Foley’s autobiographies:
    • I was relatively ignorant. I knew the pop culture, the big stars of my youth, Hulk Hogan and Macho Man. My friend wrote a song about the Von Erichs. I knew bits and pieces, but I had no idea of the rich lore and just the culture, until I started researching for this job.
    • I read Bret Hart’s memoir and Mick Foley’s memoir, basically getting really into looking at all the different looks and gimmicks and characters that wrestlers have had over the years. It was a wonderful permission that Jinx’s [Offerman’s character] heyday was like 30 years ago, because that allowed us to be a lot more campy.
    • I have to say, it’s like getting cast as a linebacker or something. If you’re going to be out there actually representing and playing the sport, you got to respect it and treat it with absolute reverence, because I own a mirror, so I’ve never had a big enough ego to think that I can just ride it out on my personality alone.
  • On Insight with Chris Van Vliet, The Sandman was asked to encapsulate the career he’s had in the ring:
    • Too many drugs, honestly, too many drugs. A lot of smiles. I get a lot of fan mail and stuff at home. Just some of the things that people write to me and they tell me how I got them through a hard time in their life, or when their dad passed away, or something like that. Those are the times when it’s really, really worth it. I mean, it’s great when you’re living your life dream. When I was five years old, all I ever wanted to be was a pro wrestler. That’s it. Not a cop, fireman, doctor. All I ever wanted to be was a pro wrestler, so I got to live my life and make decent money out of it and make people really happy. You know, when you get some people come up to you and they’re like, ‘Oh my God, you’re the greatest thing ever.’ That just gives you goose bumps. That’s cool sh*t.
  • Inside the NBA did a segment last night remembering Ted Turner.
  • AEW wished Will Ospreay (33) and Angelico (39) happy birthday.

WWE Santiago, Chile, live results: Triple H vs. Rusev

Submitted by reader Miguel Traslvai

– The New Day (Big E & Kofi Kingston) & Randy Orton defeated The Usos & Sami Zayn

This was a fun match and was longer than the six-man tag from the first show in Santiago. They played to the crowd and the chants they were doing. The finish was Orton hitting an RKO on Zayn, who was coming off of the top rope.

After the match, New Day made Orton dance as they did typical fun house show stuff.

– Sin Cara defeated Aiden English

English came out to the same chants as he did the first night (the audience chanted a local singer’s name) but said he now understands them and the crowd laughed really hard. English also spoke a little Spanish, which the audience appreciated.

The match was okay, with Sin Cara getting a good reaction for his moves. He hit a frog splash from the top to win.

– SmackDown Women’s Champion Natalya defeated Naomi to retain her title

Natalya retained after submitting Naomi with the Sharpshooter.

– Triple H defeated Rusev

Rusev came out and started speaking in Bulgarian, then Triple H’s music hit and the place went nuts. There were huge chants for Triple H, with him staring out into the crowd and pointing at the people. Rusev did his job as a heel as no one cheered him at all. Triple H got constant chants, including an “NXT” one that he nodded at.

Rusev got most of the offense during the match and Triple H did a lot of good selling. Triple H eventually hit his signature moves and did a crotch chop, then got the pin after hitting the Pedigree. This was good stuff.

When it was over, The New Day came out and made Triple H dance. He danced for a bit before hitting Kingston with a Pedigree.

– Charlotte Flair & Becky Lynch defeated Carmella & Tamina

Lynch got the biggest pop and Carmella was pretty funny with her screams and shenanigans. Charlotte ended up submitting Carmella with the Figure Eight to win it for her team.

– United States Champion Baron Corbin defeated Tye Dillinger and Bobby Roode in a triple threat match to retain his title

Roode and Dillinger got big reactions. Corbin received a lot of boos at first but then got some chants during the match. There was one chant in Spanish about how his stomach looks like a sad face. The crowd also did “NXT,” “10,” and “Glorious” chants. Roode really liked the reaction he got.

The match was a standard triple threat but it was good and very fluid. Corbin pinned Roode with an opportunistic roll-up after he had hit the Glorious DDT on Dillinger.

– WWE Champion Jinder Mahal (w/ The Singh Brothers) defeated Shinsuke Nakamura to retain his title

Mahal came out and asked us if we understood what he was saying in English. When the crowd said yes, he started speaking in Punjabi. His shoulder was taped up with kinesio tape both nights in Chile.

The match was better than the one they had at Hell in a Cell due to more interference from the Singhs. After Mahal retained, Nakamura was beaten down until he made a comeback and ended up hitting the Kinshasa on Mahal to close the show.

WWE Santiago, Chile, live results: Jinder Mahal vs. Randy Orton

Submitted by reader Miguel Traslavi

– The place was packed and very loud for last night’s show. To note, the Raw roster came last year and it was just as full last night. The card changed a few times and it wasn’t known if AJ Styles would still be wrestling here, so it was fun not to know the matches for sure until they happened.

– The New Day (Big E & Xavier Woods) & AJ Styles defeated The Usos & Rusev

The New Day came out first and then Styles did, with the crowd exploding when Styles entered. Rusev was wearing an Usos shirt. The crowd was chanting for him and he acknowledged it.

The match was short but good. The Usos worked on Woods in the corner, there were a couple of hot tags, the crowd chanted for Lana when Rusev was in, and Styles hit Rusev with the Phenomenal Forearm for the win while New Day fought with The Usos on the outside.

– Tye Dillinger defeated Aiden English

English came down while singing, with the crowd booing the hell out of him. Dillinger got an okay reaction for his entrance. English played the coward heel all the way and there were “NXT” chants. Dillinger got the pin on English, but it seemed like English kicked out at two. After the match, English took a mic and challenged anyone in the back to fight him.

– Sin Cara defeated Aiden English

Sin Cara got an okay pop and beat English in a few seconds.

– Naomi & Becky Lynch defeated Tamina & Carmella

Naomi got a good pop, but Lynch got an even bigger one. Carmella was cheered a bit, which I thought was kind of weird. There were Ellsworth chants, and she acknowledged them by screaming that he wasn’t there.

Naomi was worked on for most of the match, then Lynch got the hot tag and made Carmella tap out to the Dis-arm-her. Someone from the crowd gave Lynch a Chilean flag with her name on it.

– Bobby Roode defeated Sami Zayn

Everyone in the arena was singing Roode’s theme song. He looked surprised and pleased, with everyone singing it even after the music ended. They sang Zayn’s theme as well.

The match was slow at first. It’s weird to see Zayn playing the heel. There were dueling chants for them and the match had lots of false finishes, with it being the match of the night for me. Even though it was long, there wasn’t a low moment and there were “this is awesome” and “fight forever” chants.

Zayn hit a Blue Thunder Bomb for a really close near fall and tried a Helluva Kick, but Roode evaded him. Roode then used the Glorious DDT for the win. Everyone again sang his theme after.

– During intermission, it was announced that Triple H is on his way to be here on Sunday. The whole arena booed when they announced that it would be on Sunday.

– SmackDown Women’s Champion Natalya defeated Charlotte Flair to retain her title

Charlotte got a huge pop, but it wasn’t as loud as the one Lynch got. Natalya received way more boos than she gets on TV. The match was alright and not as long. Charlotte did a moonsault from the top rope into the ring and connected. The finish was botched with Natalya trying to put her feet on the bottom ropes for the pin, but she wasn’t able to and got the pin anyway.

– United States Champion Baron Corbin defeated Shinsuke Nakamura to retain his title

Nakamura entered to a huge pop and everyone sang his theme music. Corbin received lots of boos. He got out of the ring to taunt some fans with his US title since they had a Nakamura sign.

Nakamura wasn’t quite as over as I thought he would be after that. He hit a Kinshasa at one point, with Corbin getting out of the ring after it and eventually retaining with the End of Days. After Corbin left, they played Nakamura’s music and someone gave him a flag.

– WWE Champion Jinder Mahal (w/ The Singh Brothers) defeated Randy Orton in a last man standing match to retain his title

The Singh Brothers came down first and were booed heavily. Mahal received mostly boos but got some cheers. Orton got a crazy pop and the biggest reaction of the night.

They had a pretty standard match until kendo sticks, chairs, and a table got involved. The weapons being used got a huge reaction. The match was a bit better than the ones they had on PPV, though that may be because the crowd was more into it.

Orton threw Mahal from the top rope to break a table, then one of the Singhs did a low blow on Orton while the referee wasn’t looking. The other Singh helped Mahal get up before the 10 count as he retained his title. Orton made a comeback after, taking out both Singhs and hitting Mahal with an RKO for a huge pop to close the show.
