Women’s title match official for NXT TakeOver XXX

NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai has her challenger for TakeOver XXX.

Dakota Kai defeated Rhea Ripley in a number one contender’s match on tonight’s NXT and was confirmed as Shirai’s challenger for TakeOver. After interference by Mercedes Martinez, Kai hit the GTK on Ripley to get the win.

Martinez, who is the newest member of the Robert Stone Brand, continued to attack Ripley after the match and gave her an Air Raid Crash. Ripley has feuded with the Robert Stone Brand and defeated Stone & Aliyah in a handicap match at Great American Bash night one last month. The stipulation of that match was that Ripley would have to join the Robert Stone Brand if she lost.

June’s TakeOver: In Your House event was headlined by Shirai defeating Charlotte Flair and Ripley in a triple threat match to win the NXT Women’s Championship. She’s defended the title once since then, retaining against Tegan Nox on NXT three weeks ago. There was an angle after that match where Kai laid out Shirai with a kick to the face.

Shirai & Nox defeated Kai & Candice LeRae in a tag match on NXT last week after Kai forced LeRae to tag back in.

TakeOver XXX is taking place on Saturday, August 22. A five-man ladder match for the vacant NXT North American Championship has also been announced for the show. Bronson Reed and Dexter Lumis are the first two wrestlers who have qualified for that match.

Dexter Lumis qualifies for NXT North American title ladder match

Dexter Lumis is the second wrestler to qualify for the ladder match to determine a new NXT North American Champion at TakeOver XXX.

In this week’s triple threat qualifying match, Lumis defeated Timothy Thatcher and Finn Balor in the main event of NXT to advance to the TakeOver ladder match. This will be the first time Lumis has wrestled at a TakeOver event.

The finish of tonight’s match was Thatcher passing out in Lumis’ Silence choke. Thatcher had Balor in a leg lock when Lumis applied the choke.

It was announced on last week’s NXT that Keith Lee has vacated the North American Championship. It was said that Lee, who defeated Adam Cole to win the NXT Championship in their winner-take-all title vs. title match at Great American Bash night two, didn’t want to limit the roster’s opportunities and wants as many people as possible to get the chance to win the North American title.

William Regal then revealed that there would be a series of triple threat qualifying matches to decide the five wrestlers who will be taking part in the ladder match for the North American title at TakeOver XXX.

Bronson Reed became the first wrestler to qualify for the ladder match by defeating Roderick Strong and Johnny Gargano last week.

Damian Priest vs. Ridge Holland vs. Oney Lorcan will be next Wednesday’s qualifying match.

TakeOver XXX is taking place on Saturday, August 22.
