Sting reacts to Darby Allin’s AEW World title win: ‘Proud of him like he’s my son’

Darby Allin ended MJF’s second reign as AEW World Champion on last week’s edition of Dynamite, earning praise from Tony Khan and Sting for the milestone moment.

AEW shared footage of Allin’s win, celebrating the special moment with Tony Khan, Sting and other wrestlers. Khan told him ‘you earned it’ and they embraced backstage. Meanwhile, Sting gave props to Allin and recalled how he told him he was World Title worthy years ago, and that he was proud of him like his own son.

“I told him years ago that he is World Championship calibre and he proved it tonight. The rest is history. It’s not showtime, it’s Darby time.”

“I’m proud of him like he’s my son, yeah.”

Allin was one of the first few stars signed with AEW when it was established in 2019. Around a year later, Sting mentored him and accompanied him for matches. His rise has been closely tied to the wrestling veteran who has played a vital role in the development of his AEW career.

This Wednesday, Allin will defend the title for the first time against Tommaso Ciampa.

Sting & Darby Allin tag match announced for next AEW Dynamite

Sting and Darby Allin will team up on the Wednesday, January 10 AEW Dynamite episode.

AEW revealed during Wednesday’s show that Sting & Allin will team against Konosuke Takeshita & Powerhouse Hobbs of The Don Callis Family on next week’s Dynamite.

Takeshita defeated Allin in a singles match on this week’s episode. In a subsequent backstage interview, Don Callis issued the challenge to Allin & Sting on Takeshita & Hobbs’ behalf. AEW’s commentary team announced later in the program that Sting & Allin had accepted the challenge.

A key point of the Callis challenge promo was Sting’s 25-0 AEW record, a mark that it appears will be heavily focused in the build to Sting’s retirement match set for the Revolution pay-per-view in Greensboro, North Carolina on Sunday, March 3.

Sting, Allin, Chris Jericho, & Sammy Guevara defeated Takeshita, Hobbs, Big Bill, & Ricky Starks at last week’s Worlds End pay-per-view in an eight-man tag team contest.

AEW also announced that Samoa Joe will be at next week’s Dynamite. The show will take place at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Florida.

AEW Dynamite January 10 announced lineup:

MJF to speak, two matches announced for AEW Dynamite

MJF is set to speak and two matches are scheduled for next week’s AEW Dynamite.

An eight-man Texas Tornado match was set up on tonight’s Rampage, with Sting, Darby Allin, and The Hardys taking on The Butcher, The Blade, and Private Party. Chris Jericho and Daniel Garcia will face Alex Reynolds and John Silver, and MJF will speak.

Tonight’s opening contest had Darby Allin defeat The Butcher by count out. After the match, the rest of the Andrade Family Office came in and attacked Darby & Sting, who was at ringside. The Hardys then came out to make the save, with Matt issuing the Texas Tornado challenge for next week.

Jericho and Garcia will make their debut as a team after Garcia and the former 2point0 joined forces with Jericho, forming the Jericho Appreciation Society, laying out Eddie Kingston, Santana, and Ortiz. Jericho cut a promo on Dynamite this past week calling himself and the rest of his stable sports entertainers.

MJF will speak for the first time following the events of last week’s Dynamite. He drove Wardlow into a ring post, allowing Scorpio Sky to retain the TNT title by roll up. MJF, Sky, Paige VanZant’s husband Austin Vanderford, and Shawn Spears all attacked Wardlow , with MJF laying out Wardlow with his Dynamite Diamond Ring.
