June 25, 2007 Observer Newsletter: Sherri Martel passes away, Royce Gracie fails drug test

Sherri Martel, the greatest female performer in North America during the 80s and 90s, passed away on 6/15 under mysterious circumstances at her mother’s trailer home in McCalla, AL, near Tuscaloosa, at the age of 49.

Martel, also known as Sensational Sherri, Scary Sherri (when managing Randy Savage) and Sister Sherri (when managing Harlem Heat), was not just the best female manager in history, but one of the best managers period. In 1991, she won the Manager of the Year award during a period when the greatest mangers ever, like Jim Cornette, Bobby Heenan and Jimmy Hart were still active.

She had faded from the scene in recent years, doing limited independent dates because a painful lower back injury from all the crazy bumps she took as a female version of Heenan at ringside. The injury made traveling hard and bumping impossible. She had been told that she could be paralyzed if she was on a flight and it had a particularly bad landing. But she had a great time seeing wrestlers at several recent fan conventions. She was the life of the party, and in many ways, stole the show at the 2006 WWE Hall of Fame inductions in Chicago.

June 5, 2006 Observer Newsletter: UFC 60, Apache Bull Ramos

“In fighting, a lot of things work, but nothing works forever.”

Frank Shamrock, after the September 20, 1996, match where relatively inexperienced Lion’s Den fighter Jerry Bohlander scored a unanimous decision (yes, they had judging in UFC back in 1996) over BJJ world champion Fabio Gurgel at a time when many people thought fighting and world championships in BJJ were synonymous.

On November 12, 1993, Royce Gracie showed much of the world that everything they thought they knew about fighting was a myth. On May 27, 2006, Royce Gracie and those who clung to the belief pure Jiu Jitsu was the supreme fighting system found out that evolution had made everything he thought he knew about fighting also became a myth.

In what will likely go down as among the most historic moments in UFC history, Gracie, the original conqueror of the UFC and dominant fighter of its first year, returned after an 11-year absence and proved the saying that, “You can’t go home again.” Not when the neighborhood, that he and his brother built, had been completely refurbished.

On tonight’s Bellator 145 : With a Vengeance broadcast, Bellator CEO Scott Coker brought out Kurt Angle to announce a February 19 2016 bout in Houston between Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie. This will be their third MMA match and first since a draw at UFC 5 in April 1995.

Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie first faced off at the inaugaral UFC event on November 12th, 1993.  Royce defeated Shamrock in 57 seconds with a rear naked choke in the tournament semi-finals.  Royce would go on to win that tournament to become the first UFC tournament champion.  The two would face-off again less that 2 years later at UFC 5.  The two fought to a 36 minute draw for the first Superfight Championship.

Feb. 19 at Toyota Center in Houston, Texas at “Bellator 149: Shamrock vs. Gracie.” will be their 3rd and hopefully last match.

Also announced for the first tentpole event of 2016 is the return of Kimbo Slice vs Dada 5000.
