JNPO: Jonathan Snowden and the definitive Ken Shamrock biography

I have been wanting to have this week’s guest on since I launched my podcast three years ago, but couldn’t find the right subject to dive deep into. But with him trying to raise money to fund an upcoming Ken Shamrock biography, the time was finally right.

On a new Josh Nason’s Punch-Out, hear from the author of ‘Shamrock: The World’s Most Dangerous Man‘, Jonathan Snowden, also a senior writer with Bleacher Report.

In a one-hour conversation, we hit on several threads:

– How the Shamrock project came to be and why he’s looking to crowdfund the project vs. go with a traditional print house

– Why this book is different than the other Shamrock books

– How his first book, Total MMA, and follow up book came together

– His thoughts on the state of both MMA and MMA media when he first started through today

– His thoughts on the passing of Stan Lee, some pro wrestling talk, and more.

This is one of my favorite shows I’ve done this year, so check it out now by clicking below. Also, check out Jonathan’s IndieGogo that we discuss on the show.

Kimbo Slice & Ken Shamrock fail pre-Bellator 149 drug tests

As if their presence atop an MMA card in 2016 wasn’t bizarre enough, another footnote will be added onto the Bellator legacy of both Ken Shamrock and Kimbo Slice: busted for a positive drug test.

MMA Fighting’s Marc Raimondi broke the news Friday afternoon that the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has “adminstratively suspended” both guys pending a full adjudication process due to a non-specified banned substance found in their pre-fight urine tests prior to Bellator 149.

Raimondi added that typical maximum suspension in Texas for this type of failure go up to 90 days with a $5000 fine. Bellator has yet to make a public comment.

The 52-year-old Shamrock lost to Royce Gracie in the main event via first round TKO after the referee missed Gracie kneeing Shamrock low, leading to strikes for the win. The 42-year-old Slice downed DADA 5000 in the night’s co-main event by TKO in the third round. It was later learned that 5000 nearly died in the cage after suffering renal failure due to bad weight cutting.

The event did record numbers for SPIKE TV, crushing previous Bellator shows on their airwaves.

That night just keeps getting stranger and stranger.

Ken Shamrock vs Royce Gracie 3 set for Feb 19th 2016

On tonight’s Bellator 145 : With a Vengeance broadcast, Bellator CEO Scott Coker brought out Kurt Angle to announce a February 19 2016 bout in Houston between Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie. This will be their third MMA match and first since a draw at UFC 5 in April 1995.

Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie first faced off at the inaugaral UFC event on November 12th, 1993.  Royce defeated Shamrock in 57 seconds with a rear naked choke in the tournament semi-finals.  Royce would go on to win that tournament to become the first UFC tournament champion.  The two would face-off again less that 2 years later at UFC 5.  The two fought to a 36 minute draw for the first Superfight Championship.

Feb. 19 at Toyota Center in Houston, Texas at “Bellator 149: Shamrock vs. Gracie.” will be their 3rd and hopefully last match.

Also announced for the first tentpole event of 2016 is the return of Kimbo Slice vs Dada 5000.

Kurt Angle, during his announcement, teased a match between he and Shamrock and that could be the direction they’d head, should Shamrock win.

Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez discuss all of these crazy fights plus more on the new edition of Wrestling Observer Radio that went up late Friday night for subscribers.
