DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: USWA 1991 TV review

This week’s retro TV review looks back at the September 21,1991, edition of USWA Wrestling…or, as it should have been called, The Eric Embry Hour.

I found this one on YouTube. It features the Dirty White Boy, Dutch Mantel, Jeff Jarrett, Tom Pritchard, and other southern luminaries as the battle between Texas and Tennessee is starting to heat up. However, Bill Dundee just flat out no-shows.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: Heroes of Wrestling, 20 years later

You asked for it. You said, “Hey Karl, we like your new burn it to the ground attitude” and “Hey Karl, more snark please.”

So what did I do? I watched what is commonly thought of as the worst pay per view in the history of pro wrestling, the 1999 Heroes of Wrestling PPV, a show that happened 20 years ago last month.

I can tell you that you have been lied to. Part of this show wasn’t as bad as you’ve been led to believe but part of it is much worse. Much, much, worse.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: Huge 1920s shoot match

On this episode we look at the era of Ed “Strangler” Lewis and some really interesting stuff that happened during the early 1920s, including a big shoot match between an Olympic silver medalist and a mystery opponent known only as The Unknown!

It’s pro wrestling at its finest, only this wasn’t the 1980s — it was the 1920s. Plus, we look at some early MMA action too.

Topics covered on today’s show:

  • What’s coming up for the July Classic Wrestling Marathon?
  • The reigns of Ed “Strangler” Lewis, Stanislaus Zbyszko, and Wladek Zbyszko.
  • One of my favorite shoot matches of all time, this one is right out of the 1980s NWA. An Olympic silver medalist issues a challenge to the World Heavyweight Champion because he’s real and wrestling is fake, you know? Well, the promoters said okay, but first you must defeat THE UNKNOWN! What happens next is very interesting.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: A longform history of pro wrestling, pt. 4

Your host Karl Stern (also of When It Was Cool) presents the fourth part in a long series covering the chronological history of pro wrestling.

Still in the Pioneer Era, we meet Richard K. Fox, a hugely important figure in wrestling history, and Col. James H. McLaughlin kills another man. Additionally, we get thoughts on newly found 1981 Southeastern wrestling footage and the forgotten greatness of Randy Rose.

On this episode:

  • Karl takes us through 1981 NWA Southeastern Championship Wrestling footage which turned up on YouTube including the dominace of Dennis Condrey & Randy Rose before they were known as the Midnight Express.  Karl discusses how Rose is really overlooked for his part in the history of that team.
  • The great Kurt Brown supplies an article outing wrestling as fake back in 1844.
  • Then, we get into the longform history looking at Fox and the National Police Gazette, the birth of Frank Gotch, and the aforementioned McLaughlin continuing his streak of terror and dominace until he runs into James Owens.
  • The history of pro wrestling’s first major national singles championship: the American heavyweight title.

WOL: Sempervive & Stern on The Last Battle of Atlanta

Wrestling Observer Radio was back over the Sports Byline airwaves Tuesday with Mike Sempervive being joined by our own Karl Stern to talk about our feelings on the release of the LAST BATTLE OF ATLANTA — the final match between Tommy Rich and Buzz Sawyer on October 23, 1983.

Considering you’re just getting a match of great lore plopped into your laps on the WWE Network without much (actually without any) context at all, Karl and Mike try and explain what was going on around it, how it got to that point, and why the blow-off to it was so significant.

We only scratch the surface, but we hope we can help explain a little bit more on why this release is such a significant deal to so many older, or hardcore historical, fans.

Note that this version contains Byline’s commercial spots. We will update with a commercial free version ASAP.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling: A long-form history of pro wrestling pt. 1

Karl Stern begins an open-ended series about the history of professional wrestling, starting with the time before the pioneers of wrestling era even began.

What exactly is pro wrestling and how did it come to be? Karl will be taking a deep look at this question and looking at President Abraham Lincoln’s time spent as a wrestler, as well as laying the groundwork for upcoming shows.

  • Karl begins the show by answering a few listener emails and cleaning up a few tidbits left over from the July Classic Wrestling Marathon, including a correction on the Steve Williams biography.
  • Karl begins a detailed look at the start of pro wrestling.
  • When and where were the first big spectator crowds?
  • When were the first rules and rule books written?
  • What were catch-as-catch-can, collar-and-elbow, and Greco-Roman matches and what were the differences?
  • What did Abraham Lincoln really have to do with wrestling and when was his involvement? What was the state of wrestling at the time?

All this and more are discussed in today’s episode of the DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling show.

Dragon King Karl Audio: Lizmark, Star Wars spoilers, a little rock’n’roll

This week’s show is a change of pace to wrap up 2015 with the only wrestling talk being the death of luchadore Lizmark who was a major career rival of Karl’s mentor in pro wrestling, the late Ken Timbs. Timbs and Lizmark had a big feud in CMLL in the late 1980s over one of the major championships in Mexico.

After that, it’s all off topic:

– The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees have been announced for this year and Karl talks about the merits of Chicago, N.W.A., Steve Miller Band, Cheap Trick, and Deep Purple in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Being a big Chicago fan dating back to the 1970s, Karl tells you what makes them great (and what doesn’t). He also talks about why major bands with huge success and staying power have been historically overlooked by the Hall of Fame.

– Then, the second half of the show is all Star Wars: The Force Awakens spoilers. In fact, there’s so many spoilers that Don Jardine would say “Whoa! That’s a lot of Spoilers!”.  Enjoy but do not listen if you don’t want to be spoiled

Sit back and enjoy the final DragonKingKarl Show of 2015 and may the force be with you!

On this special family-friendly edition of the Karl Stern Show, the Dragon King (and his wife!) talk about buying gifts for the wrestling fan in your life this holiday season.

It can be intimidating for a non-fan to buy gifts for a wrestling fan, so Karl’s wife sits down with him to talk about what she looks for, our thoughts on various wrestling related items available out there, Mattel action figures, wrestling video games, lucha libre masks, and thinking outside the box.

We review the Mattel Four Horseman Hall of Fame action figure set, a lucha libre mask, talk a little bit about the WWE 2K16 video game, subscription services, plus some outside the box ideas for the wrestling fan and collector.

It’s a unique show that I hope you and your significant other (or children or parents or whatever) can enjoy. Gather the kids around the speakers and enjoy!

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Audio: Bruiser Brody biography special

On the latest episode of the DragonKing Classic Wrestling Show, host Karl Stern bring you the latest in a series of wrestler biographies. This week, Karl takes a look at the incredibly popular, mythical, and controversial “Intelligent Monster” Frank “Bruiser Brody” Goodish.

Brody was a wild bearded powerhouse who ran roughshod through the United States, Japan, and Puerto Rico before his untimely death in 1988 at the hands of Jose “The Invader 1” Gonzalez.  Until his death by stabbing in 1988, he was one of the biggest business stars in the world. In Japan, it was reported that at times he made in excess of $14,000 per week. It is impossible to tell the tale of recent biography focuses like Stan “The Lariat” Hansen and Abdullah the Butcher without also telling the story of Bruiser Brody.

Attached to this show is a special audio bonus feature! Karl recorded an audio companion for the Super Stern Stick Flash Drive based on issue 35 of the DragonKing Press Newsletter. That issue dealt with the death of Brody as told by some of the people that were there or later talked to Jose Gonzalez including Tony Atlas (the closest thing to an eyewitness), Dutch Mantell, and “Nightmare” Ken Wayne.

I hope you enjoy this show and a detailed look at the crazy life and untimely death of Bruiser Brody.
