Jim Ross again hospitalized due to difficulty breathing

The legendary “Voice of Wrestling” and AEW announcer Jim Ross has once again been hospitalized due to difficulty breathing.

Ross posted an update on X on Tuesday noting that he has made another trip to the emergency room, just over a month after being hospitalized due to difficulty breathing.

Ross wrote:

Another trip to the ER. Difficulty breathing. Likely an overnight stay. I’ll be ok. Let’s fight!

Ross was hospitalized on May 23 due to shortness of breath. He later revealed on an episode of his Grilling JR podcast that he had been diagnosed with a virus, but was on the road to recovery.

2024 has been full of health challenges for Ross, a WWE Hall of Famer. The 72-year-old AEW commentator has undergone multiple surgeries this year, including one to address skin cancer on his right hip.

Ross had planned on taking part in the AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view this Sunday, but his status for the show is now in question following his hospitalization. Ross was last featured on commentary at AEW’s Dynasty PPV this past April.

Jim Ross hospitalized due to shortness of breath

Hall of Fame announcer Jim Ross was hospitalized on Thursday due to suffering from shortness of breath.

Ross posted on X on Thursday morning that he had been admitted to the emergency room in Norman, Oklahoma after suffering from shortness of breath.

Unexpected trip to ER in Norman this morning. Shortness of the breath. That’s all for now.

The 72-year-old AEW commentator posted an update later in the day Thursday with a photo taken with his daughters in the hospital:

Ross has suffered from multiple health problems in recent years, including surviving skin cancer. He revealed in an interview with Sports Illustrated earlier this month that he recently underwent surgery to replace his right hip, but noted that overall his health has been better of late than at any point in the last year:

My health is better than it’s been in over a year, I’m happy to say. My right hip, that’s healing and getting better. My radiation wound from skin cancer–and I’m cancer-free–is still healing. Vaping has helped. It’s allowed me to stop taking pain medication and get me through the night. I’m feeling good. And I’m still doing what I love.

Ross was last at the AEW commentary desk for April’s Dynasty pay-per-view.

Jim Ross undergoes cancer surgery

Hall of Fame wrestling announcer Jim Ross has announced that he underwent surgery to address cancer on his right hip on Thursday.

In a social media post on Thursday night, Ross said that he had surgery on his right hip on Thursday morning:

Had cancer surgery this morning on my right hip. All went well. Thanks for all your love & support!

Ross announced in October 2021 that he had been diagnosed with skin cancer and subsequently underwent more than 20 radiation treatments. In December 2021, Ross announced that he was cancer-free, but he has since been undergoing wound treatment as a result of the radiation.

A member of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame and WWE Hall of Fame, Ross is currently under contract to AEW. He stated on his podcast last month that his AEW deal expires on February 14, but that he hopes to extend the contract and “finish up” his wrestling career with the company, and to call Sting’s retirement match next month specifically.

Ross turned 72 last month. He joined AEW prior to its first show, originally signing a three-year contract in April 2019. He announced in May 2022 that he had signed a roughly 18-month extension.

AEW’s Jim Ross announces he is cancer-free

Jim Ross is cancer-free.

The AEW commentator announced on Twitter today that after undergoing 20-plus radiation treatments to battle skin cancer, he is now cancer-free. Ross posted:

“I’m CANCER FREE!

We did it!

See you tonight on #AEWDYNAMITE at 8 ET!”

Ross is set to return to commentary for tonight’s AEW Dynamite New Year’s Smash episode, airing live from Jacksonville, Florida.

The 69 year-old Ross went public with his cancer diagnosis on October 23. He initially was not certain whether or not his treatment would force him to miss time at the AEW announce desk, but he ultimately stepped away for just over a month, with his last AEW appearance coming on the November 24 Dynamite.

Ross, who turns 70 on January 3, is a member of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame, inducted in the class of 1999. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007, the NWA Hall of Fame in 2016, received the Art Abrams Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cauliflower Alley Club in 2010, the Lou Thesz Award from the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2011, and is set to receive the Gordon Solie Award from the Tragos/Thesz Hall of Fame in 2022.
