Lawyer for John Laurinaitis: He’s ‘a victim in this case, not a predator’

John Laurinaitis’ lawyer says his client is a victim of Vince McMahon.

Laurinaitis, along with WWE and Vince McMahon, was listed as a defendant in the lawsuit filed by Janel Grant last week. He will be represented by lawyer Edward Brennan, who released a statement to Vice media about the case on Thursday.

“Mr. Laurinaitis denies the allegations in the misguided complaint and will be vigorously defending these charges in Court, not the media,” Brennan said. “Like the Plaintiff, Mr. Laurinaitis is a victim in this case, not a predator. The truth will come out.”

In response to a follow-up question asking for clarity, Brennan said, ““Read the allegations. Read the Federal Statute. Power, control, employment supervisory capacity, dictatorial sexual demands with repercussions if not met. Count how many times in the complaint Vince exerts control over both of them.”

Laurinaitis was fired from WWE in August 2022 following allegations in a Wall Street Journal article against him and McMahon. He was replaced in his role as Head of Talent Relations by Bruce Prichard. He had been with the company since 2001. Prior to that, he was briefly the head booker of WCW in 2000, replacing Vince Russo in the role.

Nikki & Brie Garcia comment on Vince McMahon, John Laurinaitis allegations

The Garcia Twins have commented on allegations regarding both Vince McMahon and their father-in-law John Laurinaitis.

Nikki & Brie posted a statement on X Monday writing that the sexual assault and sex trafficking allegations are something they do not condone, no matter who it is. Laurinaitis married their mother Kathy in 2016.

They wrote:

We are shocked and disheartened by recent allegations against members of the WWE. It has been a lot to process since we found out this past week just as you all did. This is something we don’t stand for or condone from anyone no matter who they are. We want all women to feel safe and supported in the workplace and in their everyday lives.

McMahon and Laurinaitis were named in a lawsuit released last Thursday by Janel Grant, who accused both of sexual assault and sex trafficking.  Laurinaitis was fired by WWE in 2022 after his name also surfaced in hush money payments McMahon gave to multiple women, including Grant.

The Garcia Twins’ contract with WWE expired last year and as a result, are no longer allowed to use their former Bella Twins name.

John Laurinaitis’ first post-WWE appearance canceled due to ‘negative feedback’

John Laurinaitis’ first public appearance since being fired from WWE has been canceled.

Bobby Fulton announced yesterday that Laurinaitis would take part in a Big Time Collectibles event in Los Angeles over WrestleMania Weekend. Less than 24 hours later, Fulton revealed that Big Time Collectibles will no longer be working with Laurinaitis due to negative feedback they have received.

Fulton wrote:

Yesterday we announced John Laurinaitis would be doing an appearance with Big Time Collectibles. Upon announcement we received only negative feedback. After much consideration we have decided to not work with him. We apologize to those that were offended by us working with him.

Yesterday, Fulton announced Laurinaitis for the event, writing “John ‘Johnny Ace’ Laurinaitis will be making his first ever appearance WrestleMania Weekend in LA, courtesy of Big Time Collectibles! More info coming soon!”

Laurinaitis was released from WWE in August following allegations of misconduct in a Wall Street Journal article. He had been with the company since 2001.

Laurinaitis was released from WWE sometime in the first week of August 2022. His departure followed allegations made in a Wall Street Journal story that accused him and Vince McMahon of misconduct. Laurinaitis was also a subject of a subsequent investigation by the WWE Board of Directors into several hush money agreements, including one from a former employee who alleged they had a sexual relationship with both men.

WWE hired Laurinaitis as a road agent in 2001 after WCW closed down. He held several executive roles throughout his 21 years with the company, including as Head of Talent Relations.

John Laurinaitis fired by WWE within last week

John Laurinaitis was fired by WWE within the last week, first reported by PWInsider and independently confirmed by Dave Meltzer.

Their report said the dismissal was for “obvious reasons” and kept quiet outside a very small circle of people in the know.

The now-former Head of Talent Relations came under fire when he was named in the recent Wall Street Journal story revealing several allegations against Vince McMahon of misconduct. Bruce Prichard took over in late-June as Laurinaitis was put on administrative leave.

Laurinaitis, along with McMahon, are under investigation by the WWE Board of Directors over several hush money agreements, including one with a former employee who allegedly had a sexual relationship with both men. McMahon resigned last month, claiming publicly that he was retiring.

Laurinaitis was a long-term WWE employee, moving over from WCW in early-2001 following WWE’s acquisition. He worked his way up the talent relations organization chart as director, executive vice president, and eventually senior vice president.

In 2012, he was demoted to a head producer role for reasons that were unknown. However, the timeline aligns with one of the aforementioned allegations against Laurinaitis as pointed out by the WSJ.

Report: Bruce Prichard named interim WWE Head of Talent Relations

Bruce Prichard has been named interim Head of Talent Relations of WWE, as John Laurinaitis has been placed on administrative leave.

PWInsider reported tonight that WWE issued a memo to talent that Prichard is the new Head of Talent Relations going forward. According to the memo, “pending the conclusion of [WWE’s] Board of Directors’ internal investigation”, Laurinaitis has been placed on administrative leave. The memo additionally promised that Prichard would provide a “seamless transition.”

PWInsider also reported earlier tonight that Laurinaitis was not backstage for tonight’s Raw.

Laurinaitis, along with Vince McMahon, are under investigation by the WWE Board of Directors over a $3 million dollar hush money agreement to a former employee who allegedly had a sexual relationship with both men. McMahon voluntarily stepped down as CEO and Chairman of WWE on Friday while the investigation takes place. Stephane McMahon has been named interim CEO and Chairwoman.

Prichard, who has worked with WWE off and on since the 1980s, returned to the company in 2019 as a Senior Vice President. Additionally, he is the Executive Producer of both Raw and SmackDown.

John Laurinaitis not backstage at WWE SmackDown

John Laurinaitis is not backstage at SmackDown tonight as Vince McMahon is set to appear on the show following hush money allegations.

Laurinaitis is not at SmackDown tonight in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dave Meltzer is reporting that he was never scheduled to be there. However, the belief is he will be at Raw this coming Monday. He, along with Vince McMahon, are currently under investigation by WWE’s Board of Directors regarding a $3 million dollar hush money agreement to a former employee who allegedly had a sexual relationship with both McMahon and Laurinaitis.

Additionally, PWInsider reported that McMahon was “joking around” during the production meeting prior to tonight’s show and was said to be in a “great mood” despite the events of the last 48 hours.

McMahon, who earlier on Friday ‘voluntarily stepped back’ as CEO and Chairman of WWE while he is under investigation, has been announced for tonight’s SmackDown. PWInsider reported that the segment involving McMahon tonight was not discussed during pre-show meetings, and was described as “treating it almost as if the segment wasn’t part of the show.”

Despite stepping aside, McMahon will continue to be in charge of WWE’s creative process. Stephanie McMahon has since been named as interim CEO and Chairwoman of WWE.

WWE board investigating Vince McMahon over ‘secret $3 million hush pact’

WWE’s Board of Directors are investigating a $3 million settlement that Vince McMahon agreed to pay to a former employee who he allegedly had an affair with.

The Wall Street Journal reports that WWE’s Board of Directors has been investigating the settlement since April, and has uncovered other, older nondisclosure agreements involving both McMahon and head of talent relations John Laurinaitis that totaled to millions of dollars. The board learned of the $3 million settlement via anonymous emails received from someone identifying themselves as a friend of the former employee.

The first email, which was sent to the board on March 30, alleges that McMahon initially hired the woman as a paralegal at $100,000 a year, but was later bumped up to $200,000 after McMahon began a sexual relationship with her. The email also alleged that McMahon “gave her like a toy” to Laurinaitis. The settlement, which took place in January of this year bars the former employee, who was hired in 2019, from discussing her relationship with McMahon. The former employee moved from WWE’s legal department to become an assistant to Laurinaitis in 2021.

“My friend was so scared so she quit after Vince McMahon and lawyer Jerry [McDevitt] paid her millions of dollars to shut up,” the email that was sent to WWE’s board stated.

The nondisclosure agreement, which WWE’s Board of Directors received a copy of on June 12, provided an upfront payment of $1 million dollars to the former employee, with the remaining $2 million to be distributed over the next five years.

The report also said that investigators have learned in recent days of other nondisclosure agreements involving McMahon and Laurinaitis. The Wall Street Journal couldn’t confirm how many previous agreements are under investigation.

A WWE spokesman in the report said the company is cooperating fully with the board inquiry and said that the relationship with the ex-paralegal was consensual. WWE later issued an internal statement to staff after The Wall Street Journal’s story was published.

“The Wall Street Journal has published a report about WWE with allegations that we and our Board of Directors take seriously. We are cooperating fully with the independent investigation initiated by our Board of Directors,” WWE’s statement read.

Jerry McDevitt, McMahon’s attorney, told the Wall Street Journal that the employee had made no claims of harassment against McMahon and that “WWE did not pay monies” to the former employee “on her departure.”

John Laurinaitis back leading WWE talent relations department

Additional notes by Bryan Rose

The WWE has not yet announced this, but John Laurinaitis has been put back in the position of Head of Talent Relations, reporting to WWE Executive Vice President of Operations Brad Blum.

Laurinaitis replaced Jim Ross as head of talent relations in 2004, when Ross stepped down from his executive roles within the company. Laurinaitis remained in that position until 2012, when he resigned. He has since returned to working as a producer/road agent, the role he entered WWE with in 2001 when WCW went out of business.

The talent relations department is being split into talent management and talent branding. The latter of which will be the idea of a talent agency looking to book WWE talent for appearances, television commercials, movies, and other third party engagements.

Laurinatis’ new role will be General Manager, Talent, which he starts immediately.

Aside from his backstage role, Laurinaits was an on-air personality from 2011-12, and has made sporadic appearances on WWE television since then.
