Tetsuya Naito wins gold in surprise Japanese wrestling return

On New Year’s Day 2026, Tetsuya Naito captured gold in his surprise return to Japanese wrestling.

Los Tranquilos de Japon (Naito & BUSHI) defeated Naomichi Marufuji & Kenoh at NOAH The New Year to become the new GHC Tag Team Champions. For both Naito & BUSHI, it was their first match in Japan since departing NJPW in May 2025. The two had been working international indie dates since then with stops in the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

The Tag Team title match was billed as Marufuji & Kenoh defending against BUSHI and a mystery partner. After teasing that Los Tranquilos de Japon trainee RYUSEI would be in the match, it was revealed that Naito himself was actually the partner.

Naito — one of NJPW’s most popular wrestlers of this era — departed the company in May after the two sides did not come to terms on a new contract. He was the leader of Los Ingobernables de Japon while with the promotion.

NJPW star Hiromu Takahashi was also in action at NOAH The New Year, losing the GHC Junior Heavyweight Championship to AMAKUSA. Takahashi met up with his former LIJ stablemates backstage:

In their post-match comments, Naito & BUSHI did not reveal what’s next for them in NOAH. One team that could potentially challenge for their belts is The Good Brothers. Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows defeated Kaito Kiyomiya & Jack Morris at NOAH The New Year and then mentioned wanting to go after the GHC titles.

WWE NXT tag team to challenge for NOAH’s GHC Tag Team titles

Hank & Tank are already getting a shot at the GHC Tag Team titles.

Pro Wrestling NOAH confirmed that the former NXT Tag Team Champions will face Masa Kitamiya and Takashi Sugiura on November 8 at Korakuen Hall.

It comes after the two made their debut on Sunday morning, defeating Alpha Wolf and Dragon Bane. They later confronted the tag team champions on the same show, issuing a challenge backstage that the champions later accepted.

The two began their tour of Japan after they were written off NXT on last week’s show, having been taken out by the returning OTM.

NOAH has seen an uptick of NXT talent on their cards in the last month. Charlie Dempsey and Harlem Lewis made their debut back on October 4 in Nagoya, facing each other in a singles match. Most recently, they teamed with Yoshiki Inamura to defeat KAYATA, KENTA, and Ulka Sasaki on October 21. Inamura has recently made his return to Japan after spending most of the year wrestling on NXT television.

NOAH’s Keiji Mutoh vacates GHC Tag Team titles due to hip injury

Keiji Mutoh & Naomichi Marufuji of Pro Wrestling NOAH announced in a press conference today they were vacating the GHC Tag Team titles due to Mutoh suffering from a left hip injury.

Mutoh and Marufuji held a press conference today to reveal the news. Mutoh said that while he had hip issues for a while, they worsened at NOAH’s Budokan Hall show that took place on January 1. He also said that he needed to take a painkiller injection before his match at the NOAH vs. New Japan card that took place at Yokohama Arena on January 8.

Mutoh, who turns 60 in December, said during the conference that he will return and wants to become GHC National Champion.

Marufuji and Mutoh won the championships back on November 13, defeating Kaito Kiyomiya and Masa Kitamiya. Mutoh’s most recent match was at Bumper Cromp 2022 back on January 16, where he and Marufuji successfully retained the titles against Kenoh and Manabu Soya.
