GCW weekend roundup: Jon Moxley defends title, Will Ospreay wins debut

After this weekend’s action, Jon Moxley remains GCW World Champion but it was a former IWGP Champion and rising star that stole the show.

At Saturday’s You Wouldn’t Understand pay-per-view in New York City, Moxley defeated Tony Deppen in the night’s main event in just over 17 minutes — his first title defense since defeating AJ Gray at the first night of Joey Janela’s Spring Break 6 in late-March.

GCW Tag Team Champions Bussy (Effy & Allie Katch) also came out of the weekend intact as they defended the titles Saturday against indie regulars The Mane Event who were making their GCW PPV debuts.

At Sunday’s I Never Liked You PPV in Providence, Rhode Island, the focus was on former IWGP World Champion Will Ospreay making his promotional debut against Nick Wayne in a match that was put into motion by Joey Janela after Wayne was held off January’s Wrld on GCW PPV at the last second due to his age.

This was also GCW’s New England debut.

Ospreay picked up the win in a buzzworthy 19-minute match with this being one of the many highlights:

Deppen rebounded from the loss Saturday with a win in a five-way scramble featuring Dustin Waller, Effy, Jimmy Lloyd and Marcus Mathers.

Joey Janela finished the weekend at 1-1 after losing to Mike Jackson Friday and defeating JT Dunn Sunday in a wild match.

Will Ospreay vs. Nick Wayne announced for GCW I Never Liked You

After being pulled from The Wrld on GCW in New York City at the last minute due to his age, Nick Wayne was asked by Joey Janela on Twitter to call his shot for a match at his Spring Break shows.

Wayne replied: “Will Ospreay.”

While the Pacific Northwest phenom didn’t get the match at this year’s Spring Break, he will get his shot at Ospreay at GCW’s June 19th debut in Providence, Rhode Island. It will also be GCW’s New England debut.

I Never Liked You will be available as a live pay-per-view on FITE.tv, per usual.

The event will also mark Ospreay’s GCW debut whereas Wayne has been a regular.

GCW also announced other wrestlers for the show which include Indie Hall of Famer LuFisto, Jack Cartwheel, Ninja Mack, Tony Deppen, Second Gear Crew and Janela himself.

The event will take place at Fete Music Hall with limited tickets remaining.

Will Ospreay to make GCW debut at June’s I Never Liked You

Will Ospreay, former IWGP World Champion and one of the world’s top wrestlers, will finally make his GCW debut next month.

GCW announced that Ospreay will compete at their I Never Liked You pay-per-view on Sunday, June 19th when the company makes their debut in Providence, Rhode Island.

While the 28-year-old works mainly for NJPW, he also wrestles for Chicago-based Warrior Wrestling in addition to overseas promotions ITT and RevPro.

Ospreay defended the Warrior title against Blake Christian in late-April which was preceded by a loss to Jon Moxley at April’s NJPW Windy City Riot.

The 4 PM Eastern PPV will be held at the Fete Music Hall which has been a regular home for popular New England indie Beyond Wrestling.

Ospreay’s calendar is beginning to fill up as he was announced for NJPW’s Capital Collision in a four-way with Jon Moxley, Hiroshi Tanahashi and Juice Robinson next Saturday; NJPW’s Strong taping next Sunday against Homicide; West Coast Pro Wrestling’s May 13th event against Titus Alexander; and House of Glory’s May 27th event against Low Ki.
