Fast & Furious 9 release date pushed back to 2021

The release date for John Cena’s Fast & Furious series debut has been pushed back to next year.

In a statement that was issued today, it was announced that Fast & Furious 9 is now scheduled to be released in April 2021. The North American release date is April 2, 2021.

F9 was previously set to be released on May 22 of this year.

Amid the coronavirus outbreak, the statement posted on the Fast & Furious franchise’s social media accounts today noted that the release date for F9 was changed because it’s “become clear that it won’t be possible for all of our fans around the world to see the film this May.”

The full statement is available below:

To our family of Fast fans everywhere,

We feel all the love and the anticipation you have for the next chapter in our saga.

That’s why it’s especially tough to let you know that we have to move the release date of the film. It’s become clear that it won’t be possible for all of our fans around the world to see the film this May.

We are moving the global release date to April 2021, with North America opening on April 2. While we know there is disappointment in having to wait a little while longer, this move is made with the safety of everyone as our foremost consideration.

Moving will allow our global family to experience our new chapter together. We’ll see you next spring.

Much love,
Your Fast Family

The trailer for F9 was released at the end of January and revealed that Cena is playing Jakob Toretto, who is the estranged brother of Vin Diesel’s character Dominic.

The first trailer for F9, the ninth film in the Fast & Furious series, can be seen below:

In the trailer, John Cena is shown as the lead antagonist in the film. He is later revealed as Dom’s (Vin Diesel’s) brother Jacob, a master thief and assassin, as well as a high performance driver. One of the big scenes in the trailer shows the two characters brawling.

John Cena was officially cast for the film back in June of last year. He hasn’t appeared on WWE television since WrestleMania last year, focusing on his film career.

He also will have a part in the upcoming film The Suicide Squad.

The Rock, who is also part of the Fast & Furious film franchise, will not be in F9. He and Jason Statham’s characters were recently part of a Fast & Furious spinoff film, Hobbs and Shaw, which also featured Roman Reigns in a cameo.

F9 will arrive in theaters May 22.
