EVOLVE postpones this weekend’s shows to May

The coronavirus outbreak has caused another change to this weekend’s pro wrestling schedule.

EVOLVE announced today that EVOLVE 147 and EVOLVE 148 have both been postponed to May. EVOLVE 147 was set to take place at the Monaghan Knights of Columbus Hall in Livonia, Michigan this Saturday, while EVOLVE 148 was scheduled for Logan Square Auditorium in Chicago, Illinois.

EVOLVE 147 has been postponed to Friday, May 8 in Livonia. EVOLVE 148 has been postponed to Saturday, May 9 in Chicago.

EVOLVE tweeted: “This weekend’s #EVOLVE147 & #EVOLVE148 have been postponed to May 8th in Livonia, MI and May 9th in Chicago. All tickets will be honored for those dates. We will have a full press release out by tomorrow as we piece everything together. We wanted to get word out ASAP. Thank you.”

Gabe Sapolsky wrote: “This weekend’s Seminar/Tryouts are also postponed until those dates. If you signed up, I’ll email you by tomorrow. Thank you. Be safe everyone.”

Meet and greets with NXT’s Keith Lee, Mia Yim, Tommaso Ciampa, and Jessi Kamea were supposed to be held at this weekend’s EVOLVE shows, along with Kamea, Brendan Vink, Denzel Dejournette, and Jake Atlas being in action.

OTT Wrestling also announced this morning that their ScrapperMania 6 events scheduled to be held in Dublin, Ireland this weekend have been canceled.

EVOLVE announces WWE’s Mustafa Ali for November shows

Another WWE wrestler is set to make a couple of in-ring appearances for EVOLVE.

EVOLVE Wrestling announced today that 205 Live’s Mustafa Ali will be in action at their shows in Livonia, Michigan on November 9 and Summit, Illinois on November 10. Opponents for Ali weren’t announced, but EVOLVE noted that he’ll be in “main event quality matches.”

The show in Illinois will be a homecoming for Ali, who is from the Chicago area and wrestled on the Chicago indie scene before signing with WWE.

With WWE and EVOLVE having a working relationship, Adam Cole and Velveteen Dream have wrestled in dark match main events for EVOLVE this year. Cole defeated WALTER in June, and Velveteen Dream defeated Austin Theory and Darby Allin last month.

Theory (w/ Priscilla Kelly), Allin (November 10 only), Shane Strickland (November 10 only), DJZ (November 9 only), AR Fox & The Skulk, Anthony Henry, JD Drake, and Josh Briggs are also advertised for EVOLVE’s November events.

EVOLVE Wrestling fires Joey Styles for on-air remark

Joey Styles will forever be known as the voice of Extreme Championship Wrestling, but what he said on air Saturday during EVOLVE 72 was just too extreme for them.

Before the night’s main event featuring Timothy Thatcher and Drew Gulak, Styles said on air toward ring announcer Joanna Rose, “Joanna, you look great tonight. And if our next President were here tonight, he’d want to grab you by the…”

The reference is, of course, related to President-elect Donald Trump’s infamous comment made on a tour bus in 2005 that was picked up by a hot microphone he was unaware was on.

Styles had said on-air that he was told to not get too political on air, essentially setting up the comment.

EVOLVE head Gabe Sapolsky was not thrilled with Styles’ choice of words.

I deeply apologize for Joey Styles’ comments and am furious

And then 30 minutes later, Sapolsky delivered some news shortly after the show had wrapped up:

We’ve parted ways with Joey Styles and that’s my final comment on this. Thank you for your support.

Streaming partner FloSlam tweeted that they support EVOLVE’s decision, and that the replay will be delayed due to editing.

Styles is a longtime conservative voice who has gone after President Barack Obama on Twitter frequently through the years. As of this writing, he has yet to comment on the firing.

After being released by WWE in August, Styles had become a voice for several indie groups including EVOLVE, Beyond Wrestling, and CHIKARA.
