DragonKing Dark: The Mel Gibson rants

Look, ok: Mel Gibson is a very good, and famous, actor. I like numerous Gibson movies: Mad Max, Lethal Weapon, Braveheart, Passion of the Christ, and on and on it goes.

But there have been enough maniacal outbursts for anyone to wonder what exactly is going on inside Gibson’s head. Apparently, he is very anti-Semitic (and against others) and has expressed this in the most vile of terms.

Learn all about it on this week’s DragonKing Dark.

DragonKingKarl Greatest Kayfabe Tournament: Kurt Angle vs. Mankind

Round two of my Greatest Kayfabe Tournament nears its conclusion — a fictional tournament which asks the question that if pro wrestling were real (not a shoot but the characters as presented on TV were real), who would win?

In this match-up, we have Kurt Angle vs. Mankind. You have voted and we have a winner.

Plus, we talk about the surprisingly few Angle vs. Mankind/Foley matches that ever happened, plus, a bizarre final match for round two.

Let’s have fun and talk some wrestling.

DragonKing Dark: The death of Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston was one of the most recognized and successful voices in any era of music with chart topping hit after chart topping hit.

However, a toxic relationship and a reality show with hip hop artist Bobby Brown brought attention to darker problems lurking in her life. Sadly, she would be dead before the age of 50 and an iconic voice would be silenced.

I take you through one of the 100 darkest moments in pop culture history with the death of Whitney Houston.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: ‘Grunt’ movie review

This week, I am taking a break from our regular rotation of classic wrestling podcasts to take a look back at one of the worst pro wrestling movies ever: 1985’s Grunt: The Pro Wrestling Movie.

This abomination of a film is not only bad by movie standards, but is terrible by pro wrestling standards. The film features several pro wrestlers in roles as, well, wrestlers including Adrian Street, Dick Murdoch, the unmasked Dick “The Destroyer” Beyer, Chavo Guerrero (as a Georgia babyface), Danny Spivey, Steve DiSalvo, and others.

Join me on this week’s DragonKingKarl and bring your popcorn, because we’re going to the movies.

DragonKing Dark: The crimes of Jared Fogle

Note: Listener discretion advised

You probably didn’t expect the face of evil to look like a geek eating a footlong did you?

Yet, here he is: Jared Fogle.

Why this goof became pop culture famous is beyond me, I mean, sure, literally for eating sandwiches and losing weight, but he’s sitting in prison now as he pleaded guilty to child sex tourism and child pornography charges in 2015.

There’s literally nothing good about this story and it’s certainly one of the 100 darkest moments in pop culture history.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: The death of Abismo Negro

In 2009, a strange series of events led to the death of luchador Abismo Negro.

Negro, who had also wrestled for both WWE and TNA, was battling drug issues at the time and in the middle of the night, he had a mental breakdown on a bus in Mexico, forcing it to stop in the middle of the desert.

The 37-year-old exited and was later found dead, drowned in a stream.

On this week’s show, we delve into the life and strange death of Abismo Negro from the pages of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

DragonKing Dark: The Robert Blake murder trial

Actor Robert Blake was best known for his role in the 1970s TV crime drama Baretta

His star faded and in 2002, he became pop culture famous yet again but for an undesired reason — he was accused and arrested for shooting his wife to death in the parking lot of an Italian restaurant in California.

Though he was acquitted of the charge, suspicions remained and tainted his life and career until his death just last month.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: WWF Magazine from December 1993

“Promotional consideration paid for by the following….”

On our rotation of classic pro wrestling shows, this week takes a look back at the December 1993 issue of WWF Magazine.

As you can see, the cover story was about Razor Ramon and how long he could keep the WWF Intercontinental title. Plus, we got features on Ludvig Borga (Tony Halme), The Lex Express, and much more.

Also included was the WWF merchandise catalog with foam fingers and teddy bears in your favorite WWF wrestlers’ gear for some reason.

DragonKing Dark: The Lance Armstrong scandal

Lance Armstrong is far and away the most famous cyclist that has ever lived, dominating the Tour de France and many other world class cycling events.

He was pop culture famous in the United States and beyond. However, that much domination, especially in sports, invites questions about performance enhancing drugs and, in Armstrong’s case, it ruined the career of one sport’s most famous athletes.

In my continuing series on the 100 darkest moments in pop culture history, I look at the wild scandal surrounding Armstrong.

DragonKing Dark: The strange funeral of Graham Parsons

My journey through the 100 darkest moments in pop culture history series continues on this week’s DragonKing Dark and this week, our show has a twist.

Yes, it was a tragedy that 26-year-old singer/songwriter Graham Parsons died. Like many music deaths, it was likely caused by the usual suspects.

But what happened next was bizarre.

The story involves a stolen hearse, fake morticians dressed like cowboys, a gallon of gasoline, and a flaming casket in the middle of the desert.

Yeah, this one is dark but in a different way.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: The Zbyszko brothers at MSG

I continue my series looking at the history of pro wrestling at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

At this point, we are up to the 1910s where both Stanislaus and Wladek Zbyszko are having a run. Both were world champion wrestlers in the early 1900s and even have a eventual wrestling connection through Harley Race. (Larry Zbyszko, though not related, took his name from them.)

Also on this episode, I talk about Mort Henderson, who made quite a sensation as the Masked Marvel and his match with Joe Stecher.

DragonKing Dark: The death of boxer Tommy Morrison

On this week’s DragonKing Dark, I continue on my path through the 100 darkest moments in pop culture series.

Tommy “The Duke” Morrison was a rising boxing star in the late 1980s into the early 1990s who famously held a version of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) title by defeating George Foreman.

He also got his break in acting by appearing as the character Tommy “The Machine” Gunn in Sylvester Stallone’s 1990 Rocky V. But, Morrison’s lifestyle caused his star to tumble and a failed HIV test effectively ended his boxing career despite the fact that he protested and denied having HIV or AIDS up until his death at 44 years old in 2013.
