JNPO: Inside the rise of Seattle’s DEFY Wrestling

As always, this is a free show. Just click below to listen.
In January 2017, a new indie promotion launched in Seattle, Washington, headlined by Cody Rhodes vs. Shane Strickland competing for the now-defunct GFW NexGen Championship.
In current day, DEFY Wrestling just celebrated their fifth anniversary, has a rabid and loyal fanbase, their own on-demand video service, and has helped further along the careers of Strickland, Darby Allin and prodigy Nick Wayne.
In this look at the history and future of the promotion, co-owner and co-founder Matt Farmer talks with me about everything DEFY in a fascinating look at how an indie promotion has fought to make it in a region that needed a modern wrestling infusion.
In our talk, we discuss Allin, Strickland, the rise of Wayne and the night he was given his AEW contract, balancing cards with local vs. fly-in talent, and plenty more.
If you’re in the Portland, Oregon, area Saturday, check out their event headlined by DEFY Interim World Champion Christopher Daniels, 2 Cold Scorpio vs. Nick Wayne, a no DQ match between Joey Janela and Schaff, and more.

Nick Wayne accepts AEW contract from Darby Allin at Defy event

Nick Wayne was offered an AEW contract following tonight’s Defy Year V main event.
After Christopher Daniels defeated Wayne to retain the interim Defy World Championship, Darby Allin made a surprise appearance. He told Wayne that he brought an AEW contract for him. After taking time to recover, Wayne accepted the contract.

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Bryan Alvarez noted that the contract would be something along the lines of a apprenticeship deal where Wayne, 16, has to finish high school. When he turns 18, he would become a fully contracted AEW wrestler.
Following Allin’s appearance, Shane Strickland came out and told Wayne that this was Swerve’s house.
Wayne is the son of Buddy Wayne and has made regular appearances for Defy, Black label Pro, 5CC and Game Changer Wrestling in the last year. He’s wrestled against the likes of Joey Janela, Blake Christian, Jack Cartwheel, and Lee Moriarty.
Other matches from tonight’s Defy show had Jonathan Gresham retain the ROH World Championship against Cody Chhun, The Bollywood Boys defeating Midnight Heat for the Defy Tag Team titles in a ladder match, and Trey Miguel successfully defending Impact’s X-Division title against Titus Alexander and Guillermo Rosas in a three-way.
Penta 0M victim of armed robbery in Mexico, off of Defy show

An armed robbery in Mexico has led to a unique matchup tonight in Tacoma.
Penta 0M, who was scheduled to face Cody Rhodes in Tacoma, Washington for Defy Wrestling, was robbed this morning at gunpoint.
In a story first written by Pro Wrestling Sheet, three men on motorcycles pulled up to him and pulled out guns while he was in Mexico headed to the airport in an Uber to fly into Seattle. The three men pulled out guns and forced him to give up his wallet, keys, cell phone, and backpack.
The backpack contained things he was taking with him to the show including his mask and his ring gear, as well as his passport and paperwork. Reportedly he asked the gunmen if he could at least keep his backpack, but they refused.
He was not injured, and after the robbery, attempted to board the flight but because he didn’t have his passport, he wasn’t allowed on it
It’s not clear when he’ll be able to travel to the United States, but it is expected shortly. Defy announced that both Penta and Rey Fenix are off of tonight’s show due to missing their flight.
Rhodes will be facing Kyle O’Reilly in a singles match tonight.
