David Otunga would ‘absolutely’ be open to WWE return

If given the chance, David Otunga would “absolutely” like to return to WWE.

Otunga — best known for his time as a member of the Nexus — has reemerged recently with a YouTube channel where he covers pro wrestling from a legal perspective. He has not wrestled in more than a decade and was last with WWE as an announcer and pre-show panelist before departing the company in its pandemic layoffs of 2020.

While appearing on a new episode of Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Otunga was asked about his interest in a potential WWE return.

“Yeah. I mean If they called, yeah, absolutely,” he responded. “Like I said, it was so much fun. Although now I’m still doing announcing with 4th Rope, Westside Gunn and Smoke DZA’s [indie] promotion, which has been awesome. And I’ll tell you what, it’s pretty cool, because of the training that I received at WWE, like, prepared me so much for doing that.”

Otunga felt like, when he was with WWE, there was a disconnect between who he was as a wrestler and who he was as an announcer. He was a heel in the ring but then became a babyface commentator who had to push forward the story and root for wrestlers he previously had storyline issues with.

“The most difficult part is, you’re working. Like, we’re telling the story and we’re selling the storylines, but you’re not out there just saying whatever you want,” Otunga said. “You’re not just saying your real thoughts on the match, or whatever it is, but you have to push forward the story.

“So I was a babyface announcer, which was a disconnect, I think, for my fans, too, because I was always a heel. And, you know, John Cena was one of our biggest enemies. Now all of a sudden, on SmackDown, I’m putting over John Cena. He’s the greatest, he’s the greatest of all time. Meanwhile, as a character, we hate John Cena. We have huge heat with John Cena. So it was kind of inauthentic in that manner. I did my best with it, but I think that was the disconnect for fans.”

Van Vliet asked Otunga how often Vince McMahon was in his ear on commentary.

“Well, he’s always there,” Otunga said. “Me personally, he might give me something to say or something funny to say, to rip on [Michael] Cole, or somebody, whoever was out there with me. He never yelled at me, but I’d hear him get a hold of some of the other guys, but he was right there the entire time.”

The 45-year-old Otunga noted that he does not consider himself retired from the ring. He just sees himself as someone who hasn’t wrestled in a long time. Otunga thinks he’ll likely wrestle another match somewhere at some point.

Along with focusing on his YouTube channel, Otunga is continuing to pursue acting work and noted that he’s about to film a role in an independent movie.

Otunga & Hudson agree on temporary custody, protective order dropped

David Otunga and Jennifer Hudson have reached a temporary custody agreement regarding their eight-year-old son (David Jr.) and Hudson has voluntarily agreed to drop the protective order that she filed against Otunga earlier this month.

TMZ reported the news today after Otunga and Hudson were scheduled for a hearing yesterday. Hudson filed the protective order as the couple, who had been engaged for nearly a decade, had been in the process of ending their relationship for several months.

The temporary agreement calls for Otunga to have primary custody of their son, with Hudson filming “The Voice UK” in London currently and having to travel often for the US version of the show. Otunga has claimed to be their son’s main caregiver due to Hudson’s schedule. TMZ reports that Otunga won’t be returning to Hudson’s home in the Chicago area they had been living in.

In the protective order, Hudson claimed Otunga had shown “aggressive, threatening, and harassing behavior” towards her, had physically pushed her out of their master suite at one point, and left a gun and holster on their kitchen table to intimidate her. Through his lawyer, Otunga responded by denying all of Hudson’s allegations, saying he’s never harmed or threatened her or their son and claiming Hudson filed the order to gain an upper hand in the custody dispute.

TMZ previously reported that police had opened a domestic battery investigation into the incident, though it’s not clear where that stands after Hudson dropped the protective order.

Jennifer Hudson splits from WWE’s David Otunga, files protective order

WWE performer David Otunga and longtime fiance Jennifer Hudson have split up and Hudson has filed a protective order against the former wrestler.

Hudson’s publicists told People Magazine on Thursday that the two have been in the process of ending their relationship and she filed a protective order against him earlier in the day. The two had been a couple for nearly 10 years.

Tracy M. Rizzo, Otunga’s attorney, countered to People, claiming Hudson is making up a story in order to gain custody of the couple’s eight-year-old son, David Otunga Jr.

“David Otunga has been trying to negotiate the terms of an amicable parenting agreement with Ms. Hudson for several weeks now. However, when it became apparent to Ms. Hudson that Mr. Otunga would be the parent granted residential care of the child, as a result of Mr. Otunga being the child’s primary caregiver while Ms. Hudson pursues her career all over the world, Ms. Hudson decided to file a meritless Petition for Order of Protection in an effort to gain an unfair advantage in the custody dispute.

“As a result of Mr. Otunga’s career in the WWE, Ms. Hudson felt that she could give an award winning performance in court to portray herself as the victim. Mr. Otunga has never abused or harassed Ms. Hudson or their son, and it is unfortuante, especially in today’s climate, that she would feel the need to make these false allegations against him. Mr. Otunga looks forward to his day in court and in being awarded the residential care of the  parties’ only child.”

After retiring from active competition in 2015, Otunga moved to commentary and a pre-show panelist postion, most recently for the Raw brand. The 37-year-old was the runner up on the first year of the NXT competition and was part of the big Nexus angle.

Booker T joining Raw commentary team for next six weeks

Booker T will be returning to WWE commentary for a limited time.

Though it was announced that David Otunga would be joining the Raw announce team and swapping places with Byron Saxton as part of WWE’s roster shakeup, WWE.com noted yesterday that Otunga would be absent from the show for the next six weeks because he’s filming a movie.

The website teased the announcement of a replacement for Otunga during that period, then revealed Booker T as the choice today. He’ll be calling Raw alongside Michael Cole and Corey Graves.

Booker T was last regularly on commentary towards the end of 2015 as part of SmackDown before the show moved to the USA Network in 2016. He has since been featured on WWE Network pre-show panels, most recently on the broadcast prior to WrestleMania 33.

Otunga will be playing a DEA agent as the lead character in “Katrina,” which is the working title for a film set in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
