This Week’s Retro Observer Newsletter

Sunday Update

Bryan and I will be back tonight talking about all the weekend wrestling news and probably have time for questions as well. I’ll be doing a Q&A show on Tuesday afternoon with Garrett Gonzales & Andrew Zarian.

As noted elsewhere on the site, Chigusa Nagayo said that last night’s West Coast Pro show in San Francisco would be her final U.S. match. Later yesterday she said it would be her final match period. Nagayo, whose heyday was in the 80s, was the most popular woman wrestler of all-time up until that point in time, the highest paid and biggest merch seller. West Coast Pro put the show up already so you can see her farewell ceremony at

Both Aaron Brooks and Carter Starocci of Penn State won NCAA Division I titles last night at 174 and 197 pounds respectively at the finals in Kansas City. They became only the sixth and seventh men in history to win four NCAA titles. It should be noted that in the 50s and 60s that freshmen weren’t eligible so wrestlers like Danny Hodge and Yujiro Uetake, two of the best of all-time, only won three. Starocci beat Rocco Welsh of Ohio State 2-0 in the finals. Brooks beat Trent Hidlay of North Carolina State 6-1. Brooks was put in the main event position on the show. Greg Kerkvliet of Penn State, who is under a WWE NIL deal, won the 285 pound class over Lucas Davison of Michigan by a 13-4 score in the finals. All the winners are automatically in the Olympic team trials. Brooks won Most Dominant Wrestler and is a favorite to win the Hodge Trophy. Penn State won the team championship with more than double the points of second place Cornell.

New Japan’s Alex Coughlin announced his retirement from wrestling at the age of 30. His last match in Japan was being the winning side of the Bullet Club War Dogs vs. United Empire cage match on 2/11 in Osaka at the New Beginning show which was Will Ospreay’s last match for New Japan. He gave no reason as to why.

There was a backstage sendoff for the Motor City Machine Guns at last night’s TNA tapings in Philadelphia which is their final show with the company. Their contracts expire a week from today. No word on what is next for them. Obviously they are one of the best tag teams of the past 20 years.

Atlantis Jr. & Soberano Jr. won Friday night’s Parejas Incredibles tournament, as expected. So the finals of the tournament will be against Rocky Romero & Mascara Dorada on the biggest CMLL show so far this year this coming Friday. The main event is the Arena Mexico debuts of Bryan Danielson & Jon Moxley & Claudio Castagnoli & Wheeler Yuta facing Mistico & Volador Jr. & Blue Panther & Ultimo Guerrero. The main event led to one of the fastest sellouts ever in Arena Mexico history.

WWE last night in Springfield, IL:

  • Becky Lynch & Bianca Belair & Naomi b Iyo Sky & Kairi Sane & Dakota Kai when Lynch pinned Kai
  • Sami Zayn b Shinsuke Nakamua with the helluva kick
  • Gunther b Jey Uso to keep the IC title
  • R-Truth & Miz b Dominik Mysterio & JD McDonagh via DQ when Finn Balor & Damian Priest interfered. New Day made the save. You can guess what happened next when Adam Perace came out.
  • R-Truth & Miz & New Day b Balor & Priest & McDonagh & Dominik Mysterio when R-Truth pinned Dominik.
  • Omos b Oddysey Jones
  • Rhea Ripley won a three-way to keep the women’s title over Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler when she pinned Baszler with the Rip Tide
  • Cody Rhodes & Seth Rollins b Jimmy Uso & Solo Sikoa when Rollins pinned Uso after a curb stomp.

At today’s Stardom show in Kobe, Donna Del Mondo reunited for one last time with Giulia leaving. Giulia & Maika & Syuri & Natsupoi & Mai Sakurai & Mirai beat Saori Anou & Tam Nakeno & Sayaka Kurara & Ami Sohirei & SakiKashima & Rana Yagami. Giulia said this was the last time they’d be in a match together and thanked Himeka and Thekla, who weren’t there but were key parts of the group.

Igor Severino became the first fighter in a long time fired before the end of the show. Severino was disqualified in his fight with Andre Lima at yesterday’s show at the Apex. It was the first person to be DQ’d for biting in UFC history. Dana White then told Kevin Iole that he was being fired. White told Iole, “If you get frustrated and want out of the fight, there are plenty of ways to do it, but the worst thing you can do is bite your opponent. Now, you get cut and lose the biggest opportunity of your life. Not to mention, he’s going to have a real problem (with the commission).”

On A&E tonight, WWE Rivals is Hardys vs. Dudleys vs. Edge & Christian at 8 p.m. This is notable obviously for the ladder and TLC matches and that they are doing a feud where four of the six are currently with AEW. Biography at 10 p.m. is Davey Boy Smith.

Sorry to report on the death of John Burke, who wrestled as Big Jack, from complications of liver cancer. He passed away on Friday at the age of 58. He had worked for Chicago independents for years and was a five-time PWI champion and formed PCW. He was among the people who started AAW which is one of the most notable indie groups of the past ten years. He trained wrestlers like Pauly Thomaselli, Tony Scarpone, Tony Rican and Robert “Ego” Anthony. Burke started AAW 20 years ago with Scarpone and a few others and Danny Daniels bought them out. Burke was a part of the Chicago scene and a big reason PWI and PCW started. (thanks to Comic Connectors and Keith Lipinski)

We’re looking for reports on these shows from the weekend

  • NXT from last night in Gainesville, GA
  • TNA from last night in Philadelphia, PA
  • West Coast Pro from San Francisco
  • WWE tonight in Rockford, IL
  • GCW today in Rochester, NY

As far as items that were heavily searched on Google this past week, nothing from pro wrestling or boxing made the list. Rose Namajunas from last night’s UFC show at the Apex had 50,000 searches for No. 11 on the list. Also nothing from the NCAA wrestling tournament. And obviously tons of stuff from the basketball tournament.

Michael Chandler said that he’s expecting his fight with Conor McGregor at UFC 303, which would be 6/29 in Las Vegas as part of International Fight Week.

AEW/ROH’s Christopher Daniels turns 54 today.

The blocks for the All Japan Champion Carnival tournament were announced today:

Smith was originally in the tournament, then he was out, and then he was back in. This means he’ll have singles bouts with Miyahara and Aoyagi.

QT Marshall & Teil Margaret Runnels’ new version of Turnbuckle Championship Wrestling debuted on 2/8 and this is the video from the first event. Among those on the show were Aaron Solo, Marshall, Scotty Riggs, Lexy Nair, Glacier Ray Lloyd and Adam Priest.

Chigusa Nagayo wrestles final match of career for West Coast Pro

Chigusa Nagayo has wrestled the final match of her career.

It was announced at West Coast Pro’s Marvelous Coast event on Saturday night that not only was this the final match in the United States for Nagayo, but it would be the final match of her career. In the co-main event of the show, Nagayo teamed with Takumi Iroha and Queen Aminata in a winning effort against Sandra Moone, Mio Momono, and Masha Slamovich when Nagayo submitted Momono with the scorpion deathlock.

After the match, the participants and Nagayo’s trainees entered the ring splashed her, and pinned her in a ceremonial match. Everyone then cleared out as Nagayo thanked the fans for everything.

Before the match, Madusa, Dump Matsumoto, and Bull Nakano came to the ring and said a few words.

Nagayo started wrestling in 1980 and rose to immense popularity in Japan with Lioness Asuka. Together they were known as the Crush Gals and not only were successful as a tag team in All Japan Women, but also sold records as a singing duo. In 1989, she retired as part of AJW’s mandatory retirement policy, but returned in 1993 and later formed the GAEA promotion and most recently Marvelous.

SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight talking NXT Takeover and the rest of the news. You can send questions to the show to [email protected]

NXT Takeover is tonight at 7 p.m. Eastern for a show slated on the WWE Network:

  • MSK (formerly the Rascalz) vs. Grizzled Young Veterans for the Dusty Rhodes tournament and likely a title shot at Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch.  Should be a good mach.  GYV are very solid workers and MSK are very good in a different way.  MSK were listed as -200 favorites, which makes sense.
  • Ember Moon & Shotzi Blackheart vs. Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai for the women’s Dusty Rhodes tournament.  The winning team faces Shayna Baszler & Nia Jax soon.  Moon & Blackheart are the -200 favorites.
  • Johnny Gargano vs. Kushida for the North American title.  On paper, this match should be excellent.  It’s Kushida’s first real major match and against a guy who always delivers on the big shows.  Gargano is listed as a -275 favorite.
  • Io Shirai vs. Mercedes Martinez vs. Toni Storm for the women’s title.  Also should be good.  Shirai is -300 while Storm is +260 and Martinez is +525 in the odds.
  • Finn Balor vs Pete Dunne for the NXT title. This could be another main event classic and will probably be a long match.  Balor is a -500 favorite to retain

51-year-old Hall of Famer Jun Akiyama becomes the second 50-plus year old Hall of Famer (Keiji Muto on Friday being the other) to win a Japanese major title. Akiyama beat Tetsuya Endo on today ‘s DDT show in Kawasaki to win the KO-D title

Raw tomorrow will have a gauntlet match with Drew McIntyre, Sheamus, Jeff Hardy, Miz, A.J. Styles and Randy Orton.

Regarding the suicide death of Tom Cole on Friday, his older brother Lee Cole has an interview.

Regarding Google searches, last night’s UFC PPV did 700,000, which is low end for a PPV show. It was the most searched topic on the Internet yesterday that didn’t involve Valentine’s Day or the Trump impeachment. Searches were heaviest for the main event, as well as for Kelvin Gastelum, Alexa Grasso and Maycee Barber. The only other combat sports related item to crack the top 20 on any dates this week was Gina Carano at No. 1 on Wednesday with 2 million searches.

NY Mag compares the firing of Gina Carano by Lucasfilm to McCarthyism in the 50s. You knew somebody would do that. (thanks to Gary Collins)

We spoke about the Ariel Helwani/Dana White stuff on today’s show.

Chigusa Nagayo, the most popular Japanese woman wrestler of all-time, along with Kyoko Inoue and Mima Shimoda are all booked in a Rumble style Battle Royal in Stardom’s 3/3 show at Budokan Hall.

UFC

  • Last night after his PPV win over Maki Pitolo, Julian Marquez in his post-match interview asked Miley Cyrus to be his Valentine.  She then wrote,”Shave an MC into your chest and I am yours.  Happy VDay and congrats my love.”

AEW

  • Fulham, the U.K. soccer team Tony Khan is in management of, beat Everton today at Goodison Park, Everton’s home field.  The key to that is Everton had won 22 straight home games over Fulham and had 23 wins and four ties in the previous 27 games on Everton’s field  The last time Fulham won on Everton’s field was in 1961.
  • Miro was in the booth Friday night for the debut of his Fan Controlled Football team

OTHER NOTES

  • Two different NWA world title matches with Ric Flair vs. Butch Reed.  One was the Florida television match which saw Reed as a guy not thought of at that level and then beating Flair on TV which set up all the house show title matches. The other was from 1985 Mid South Wrestling. (thanks to Paul Sosnowski and Ross Blair)
  • Dan Lambert, the ATT owner who did angles with Bobby Lashley for TNA a few years back and was a top level heel manager, will be on Wednesday’s MLW show doing fight analysis. The idea is he’ll be a heel announcer for Team Filthy and will manage King Mo in his match with Low Ki also on Wednesday.
