Charles Robinson admits to faking WWE broken rib injury from Goldberg spear

The broken rib that Charles Robinson claimed to have suffered at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event this July was not legitimate.

During Goldberg’s retirement match on the July 12 edition of SNME, there was a spot where Robinson — the referee for the bout — was taken out by a spear from Goldberg after Gunther moved out of the way. Robinson claimed to have suffered a broken rib, even sharing an image of an X-ray on Instagram that he said was his. But Robinson has now admitted that the injury was just storyline.

“No [the broken rib was not legitimate],” Robinson told Insight with Chris Van Vliet. “My girlfriend and I — I said, ‘What can I do to put this over to make Goldberg feel good?’ And I said, ‘Hmm, there’s an image of a broken rib online.’ So I just posted that.

“And I called [Goldberg] to tell him what I was doing. And he goes, ‘That’s a great idea.’ So he didn’t mind.”

Robinson said that, while the broken rib was a work, Goldberg’s spear did leave him feeling sore.

“Normally, he picks you up, lays you down nice and soft. He went right through me,” Robinson said. “Now, I was sore seriously for about 10 days. You know, coughing and stuff. You can’t do anything about a rib anyway, so why go get it checked?”

Goldberg’s career ended with a loss as Gunther defeated him at the July 12 SNME episode. Robinson said he’s heard that Goldberg hand-selected him to be the referee for the match, but he does not know that for sure. The two first worked together for WCW in the 1990s.

As far as his own future, the 61-year-old Robinson told Van Vliet that he would love to continue refereeing for 10 more years.

WWE referee Charles Robinson details getting bit by bat

While being interviewed on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, WWE referee Charles Robinson detailed the bizarre situation where he recently suffered a bat bite.

The 61-year-old Robinson had to spend a night in the emergency room last month after he was bitten by a bat at his home. Robinson told Van Vliet that he was awoken by his two cats making noise in the middle of the night. He initially thought the bat was one of his referee gloves. When he tried to pick it up, it became clear that was not the case.

“Sleeping [at] 2 a.m. in the morning. Hear a noise in the bedroom — cats. We have two cats. One’s named George. The other is Michael: George Michael,” Robinson said. “And so I got up, used my flashlight, saw the two cats sitting there with their toys. I said, ‘Oh, cats. They’re just playing, having a good time.’

“Well, there was a big black blob right in the middle of the room. And we carry black latex gloves as a referee. So I said, ‘Hey, they got my glove. Let me pick it up so they don’t choke on it.’ Being the good cat dad that I am, bent down, pick it up — and that sucker bit me.”

Robinson said the bat got into his house by coming down his chimney. Due to the bite, he was in the hospital for five hours and received seven shots.

The bite happened while Robinson — a referee on the SmackDown roster — was already dealing with a broken foot that he suffered while setting up the ring at a WWE show. In addition to his referee duties, Robinson is part of the WWE production crew that sets up the ring and tears it down.

Robinson has now been with WWE for nearly 25 years, joining the company in 2001 after WCW closed its doors. He became a fan of the industry when he was around 10 years old going to see Ric Flair at shows.

On the subject of his future, Robinson told Van Vliet that he would love to continue refereeing for another 10 years.

“I need at least — what, five, six more years, at least, in the ring,” Robinson said. “I would love 10.”

WWE referee Charles Robinson taken to emergency room for bat bite

WWE referee Charles Robinson went through a strange ordeal overnight that had him in the emergency room for several hours.

In an Instagram post, Robinson shared that he was bitten by a bat in the middle of the night. He was treated at the hospital for the animal attack and required four shots.

“Great way to start the morning. 2:00am and got bit by a bat,” Robinson wrote. “That’s right a bat! 4 hours later in the ER and six shots. #animalattacks #hospital”

The 61-year-old Robinson is a referee on the WWE SmackDown roster and has been scheduled to travel to Boston this week for Friday’s episode at TD Garden. It remains to be seen if this bat bite will affect his status for the show.

A longtime fan of wrestling and of Ric Flair, Robinson broke into the industry in the 1990s as a photographer and referee. He later joined WCW as a ref and has now been with WWE for nearly 25 years.

At WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event last month, Robinson had the honor of being the referee for Goldberg’s final match. He took one of the last spears of Goldberg’s career when Gunther moved out of the way and Goldberg laid out Robinson.
