Another DragonKingKarl mega-show in our “Saga” series takes a look back at a tag team many consider the greatest of all time: the Midnight Express.
But if you think the Midnight Express is only Dennis Condrey, Bobby Eaton or Stan Lane, or if you think Jim Cornette has always been part of the formula, think again. The Midnight Express was already a highly decorated veteran unit before Cornette ever came along.
With founding members Condrey, Randy Rose, and Norvell Austin, the Midnights ran rampant as the top heels in two different territories long before Mid-South.
Plus, you will learn about all the Midnight Express members including (yes) the Mongolian Stomper, the Honky Tonk Man, and more.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE
Bryan and I will be back tonight with Wrestling Observer radio covering a ton of topics including Raw, COVID in Japan, and the U.S., and much more.
Raw is in San Antonio tonight. There will be a Bill Goldberg-Bobby Lashley face-to-face as Raw does exactly what Smackdown did on Friday plus Randy Orton vs. Omos and Drew McIntyre vs. Veer & Shanky. It’s the SummerSlam go-home show for the Raw brand. We’re looking for reports on anything from the show not televised as well as from the Impact tapings in Nashville and New Japan tapings tonight in Long Beach, CA. We’re also looking for your thoughts on the weekend’s AAA TripleMania and New Japan Resurgence shows, thumbs up, down or middle, best and worst match to [email protected]
The Showbuzz Daily web site has returned with notes on Friday programming. This will enable us to get more details on the ratings of all sports.
Some notes from Friday. Smackdown did 2,084,000 viewers and 0.58 in 18-49, winning the night in the key demo. The number is actually artificially low because several markets aired NFL football on FOX and it probably would have ended up closer to 2.2 million and probably be the most demo number except for 7/16 in a long time. The debut of Rampage did 740,000 viewers and 0.31, finishing third on cable behind the two NFL games on the NFL Network. Head-to-head, the NFL only beat Rampage .36 to .31. It actually beat the NFL game head-to-head in women 12-34. It was up 113% from what TNT averages in the time slot in 18-49and up 30% in what TNT averages with movies in total viewers. Given the time slot, it’s an excellent number but it was promoted like crazy all week by WarnerMedia so this is not likely where it’s going to stay. IIt may do even bigger this Friday so it probably won’t be until about week four before we know what level it will end up at.
“Our goal was to come out of the gate strong and establish Fridays at 10 p.m. ET on TNT as the place to catch the hottest commodities in professional wrestling,” said Tony Khan, CEO, GM and Head of Creative of AEW. “Coming off our red-hot debut episode of ‘AEW: Rampage’ last Friday that featured Dr. Britt Baker retaining her AEW Women’s World Championship against Red Velvet in the main event match, we’re all excited for The First Dance this Friday night at the sold-out United Center in Chicago. It will be a special episode of ‘AEW: Rampage’ that will be enshrined in wrestling history as a night that fans will remember for a very long time.”
The final WWE PPV show of the year will be 12/12 at the All-State Arena in suburban Chicago. Chicago will be loaded as AEW not only runs there Friday, three times the first week of September and will return the night before Thanksgiving as well.
Funeral services for Bobby Eaton will be on 8/24 at 2 p.m. at the New Generation Funeral Home at 2930 Murfreesboro Pike in Antioch, TN.

UFC fighters Thiago Santos and Yana Kunitskaya announced on Sunday that they are having a child. SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE
We had two major shows the last two nights, one with Garrett Gonzales and the other with Bryan Alvarez going over the WWE cuts and the much bigger backstory of the cuts, up on the site.
Abdulrashid Sadulaev won the third match in the greatest modern amateur wrestling rivalry in winning the gold medal match yesterday over Kyle Snyder at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba Japan. Sadulaev, considered by many as the greatest wrestler in the world, stopped 2016 gold medalist Snyder by a 6-3 score. Sadulaev and Snyder were the stars of the 2016 Olympics, winning gold medals at 189 and 213 pounds respectively. Sadulaev moved up a weight class in 2017 for the world championships to beat Snyder, but Snyder won. In the 2018 world championships, Sadulaev scored a first round pin. Sadulaev went up 6-0, but Snyder got a takedown and push out to make it 6-3 and Sadulaev defended him the last 28 seconds. All five male freestyle wrestlers ended up medaling with Snyder getting the silver medal. Russia won the team championship over the U.S., which came down to that match.
Sara Hildenbrandt of the U.S. captured the bronze medal at 110 pounds with a tech fall win over Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the second round.
UFC 265 last night did 550,000 searches, which put it No. 2 on the list for yesterday. That’s the lowest number for a PPV show in a long time and there have been Fight Nights in the same realm. It doesn’t appear creating a fake title the way they did made a difference, but then again, there wasn’t a marquee fight on last night’s show either. Jose Aldo was No. 14.
For the rest of the week, on Thursday, Suicide Squad was No.. 1 with two million searches, Gable Steveson was No. 14 with 100,000 and Bobby Eaton was No. 17 with 100,000. The only other combat sports related number was Tymara Mensah-Stock, who won a gold medal and has interest in WWE, No. 12 with 100,000. Ric Flair did not crack the top 20 but Bray Wyatt when he was released last week hit 200,000.
Pickering will be at ringside on English commentary on 8/15 for NOAH with Stewart Fulton with Takashi Sugiura v Masato Tanaka for both the NOAH National Championship and the ZERO-1 Heavyweight title, Great Muta teams with a face-painted up Marufuji, STINGER defend their GHC JNR HVT titles v Kongoh and Kaito Kiyomiya rematches NOSAWA Rongai. It will be live on FITE TV.
Bobby Eaton’s family announced this funeral information. A service for Eaton, one of the greatest in-ring performers in pro wrestling history, will be held on 8/24 at 2 p.m. at the New Generation Funeral Home at 2930 Murfreesboro Pike, Antioch,TN 37013.
In kind of an amazing stat, 63 percent of the tickets for last night’s WWE show in Estero, FL were sold after the announcement of John Cena on the show. Thus far Cena’s name has led to anywhere from 18 to 63 percent new ticket sales, with Louisville, Milwaukee, Detroit and last night all having greater than 50 percent increases (thanks to William Zdon)
Notes from last night’s show. John Cena and Roman Reigns got the biggest reactions but the crowd was hot all night. Notably they are keeping Drew McIntyre away from Jinder Mahal at house shows as McIntyre faced Veer and Mahal did a run-in after the match. John Cena & Mysterios over Reigns & Usos headlined, doing the same match they are doing every night with Cena pinning Jey with an Attitude Adjustment. (thanks to Michael Washington)
Emi Sakura did a farewell last night at Cocopro and said she was leaving. She said she had a one-way ticket to the U.S. and is staying there and will be working full-time for AEW. The belief is she will be both a wrestler and a coach. Another Chocopro wrestler, Lulu Pencil, noted she was also coming to the U.S.
OTHER NOTES

Robert Lee Eaton, one of the nicest guys and best performers inside the ropes in pro wrestling history, passed away on 8/4 at the age of 62.
Best known as Beautiful Bobby Eaton of the Midnight Express, Eaton was noted as a tag team specialist, but he was just as adept at singles wrestling when his number was called.
Eaton was one of the most complete and versatile performers inside the ring in history. His bumps, selling and carrying a match was equal to the best world champions. His offense was flawless, with some of the best timing, flying, high spots and punches that you would ever see. The Midnight Express versions with both Dennis Condrey and Stan Lane would have to rank near the top of any reputable list of the greatest tag teams of all-time.
His weaknesses were all outside the ring. He had the long bleached blond hair and wore nice ring jackets, so he did present himself like a star. But he was otherwise normal looking. He didn’t appear to be much into weight training or steroids in an area when that was a major part of the business, so his body, while he had enough size to be credible against all but the biggest guys, was below par for the time. He was very nice, but also shy, which didn’t translate well to interviews.
“I never wanted to have to post this, but my Little Brother Beautiful Bobby Eaton passed away last night,” she wrote. “When I find out all the details I will post them. Bobby was the kindest, loving person you would ever meet. I loved him so much and am going to miss him, please say a prayer for my [niece] Taryn. She found him. And she just lost her Mom a little over a Month ago.”
Bodyslam.net reported back on July 25 that Eaton was hospitalized after suffering a fall that left him with some broken fingers and a banged up hip.
Eaton started wrestling in 1976 for NWA Mid-America and later wrestled in the Memphis territory in the early 1980s. In 1983, he went to Mid South Wrestling, where he joined The Midnight Express with Lover Boy Dennis Condrey and Jim Cornette. Condrey and Eaton were best known in Mid South for their feud with the Rock ‘n’ Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson), which would later be reignited in Jim Crockett Promotions.
The Midnight Express joined Jim Crockett Promotions, later known as World Championship Wrestling, in 1985. After Condrey left JCP in 1987, he was replaced by Stan Lane. Lane and Eaton continued to wrestle as a team through 1990, when Lane and Cornette left WCW. Eaton remained with the company on and off through 2000, winning the WCW Television title once and also teamed with Steve (William) Regal, where they were known as The Blue Bloods.
After WCW folded, Eaton continued to wrestle on the independent scene through 2015.
