On Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show Monday, former Bellator and ONE champion Ben Askren announced his second retirement from MMA and from combat sports in general.
The 35-year-old said he needs his left hip replaced after having suffered with pain and mobility issues over the last three-to-five years. After consulting with doctors, the decision was to call it quits and have the surgery which isn’t scheduled at this point.
Askren (19-2-0-1) rose to prominence on the wrestling mats at the University of Missouri and the U.S. Olympic team before transitioning into MMA a decade ago. After a handful of fights, he signed with Bellator for their season two welterweight tournament. Over a three-year run, he was dominant in nine fights, winning the welterweight title and defending it four times.
He also got a reputation as a trash talker who would go after anyone and everyone including UFC president Dana White who was more than happy to trade barbs with Askren in the media.
After Bellator chose to not re-sign him, Askren signed with the Asia-based ONE Fighting Championships and was a perfect 6-0-1. Similar to Bellator, he won their version of the welterweight title (185 pounds) and defended it three times before retiring in the fall of 2017.
A year later and after years of no interest from White, UFC and ONE orchestrated a “trade” of contracts which allowed former UFC flyweight great Demetrious Johnson to fight there and for Askren to finally get his long-awaited opportunity in the Octagon. He fought three times in 2019, kicking things off with a controversial submission win over Robbie Lawler followed up by his five-second viral knockout loss to Jorge Masvidal and finally a third round submission loss to Demian Maia in October.
Welcome to F4WOnline.com’s live coverage of UFC on ESPN+ 20: Maia vs. Askren, emanating from the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore.
The Octagon returns to Singapore for the third straight year bringing a welterweight main event pitting arguably the two best grapplers in the division against each other.
Former welterweight and middleweight title challenger Demian Maia looks to score his third straight win when he battles Ben Askren in the five-round headline bout. Maia is gunning to make it 3-0 in 2019 after scoring wins over Lyman Good and Anthony Rocco Martin earlier this year. Askren looks to rebound from his first career loss, the devastating five second knockout loss at the hands of Jorge Masvidal in July.
Also on the card is a pair of lightweight bouts pitting Michael Johnson against Stevie Ray, and Frank Camacho against Beneil Dariush, as well as a welterweight bout between Muslim Salikhov and Laureano Staropoli. In the preliminary card featured bout, it is a women’s strawweight battle as Randa Markos takes on Ashley Yoder.
Follow along with our live coverage of the event beginning at 5:30 a.m. Eastern time with preliminary action all the way through the main card.

After a lack of interest heading into the pay-per-view, Stomping Grounds was a show that exceeded expectations.

No update on Jon Jones, who was helped out. Thiago Santos had minor surgery on his right knee a few months ago and blew out his left knee in the first round of the fight. Media scores were 78-22% in favor of Jones, although I felt the fight could have gone either way. Story on the surgery from MMA Fighting.
The judges scores were:
Michael Bell gave Jones rounds 2, 3 and 4
Derek Cleary gave Jones 2, 3 and 5
Junichiro Kamijo gave Jones 3 and 5. If Clearly had given Santos 5, a round many thought he won clearly, Santos would be champion. Dana White said Jones won and has no interest in making a rematch
Nate Diaz and Khabib Nurmagomedov, who were seated not far from each other, nearly got into it last night. Security broke it up before anything serious happened and they moved Diaz to a different seat. Diaz ended up leaving the show after the Gilbert Melendez fight.

UFC
Interest in last night’s show was high, as there were 2.5 million Google searches making UFC 239 the most searched for topic in the U.S. Ben Askren, at 500,000, after his spectacular knockout loss, was the third most searched term yesterday. The New Japan G-1 show did not crack the top 20, although that is not unexpected as previous show haven’t either. When it comes to big events, it’s pretty clear the UFC big events have the most mainstream interest, followed by WWE and Bellator. AEW Double or Nothing did crack the list as has Bare Knuckle Boxing, and NXT has twice at a low level.

The UFC is holding its traditional pre-spring/summer press conference in Atlanta, GA, Friday at noon to get some buzz going for its slate of events through July’s International Fight Week.

The UFC is in Atlanta for Saturday’s UFC 236, co-headlined by two interim title fights. For the second straight year, WWE went with two fan-pleasing choices as their Royal Rumble winners. WWE followed up on Shinsuke Nakamura and Asuka’s wins from last year by having Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch win their respective Rumble matches on Sunday night. The results were entirely predictable, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t the right choices. While there are other stories that WWE can tell, top babyfaces beginning their road to WrestleMania by winning the Royal Rumble will pretty much always work.

Ariel Helwani reported yesterday that moving Askren vs. Lawler to UFC 235 was planned after the cancelation of UFC 233, which was where their welterweight fight was originally set to take place. UFC 233 was canceled due to the promotion not being able to find a suitable main event after moving Henry Cejudo and TJ Dillashaw’s flyweight title fight up to their ESPN+ debut show in Brooklyn, New York on January 19.
UFC 233 had been scheduled to take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California on January 26 before being canceled.

According to a report Monday night, one of the UFC’s new acquisitions will see his Octagon debut come in the first month of 2019 against a former UFC champion, no less.
First reported by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, former Bellator and ONE welterweight champion Ben Askren has agreed to face former UFC welterweight champion and fan favorite Robbie Lawler at UFC 233 on January 26th at Anaheim, CA’s Honda Center — the company’s first PPV of the new year.
Okamoto said the deals aren’t signed yet, but that both sides are working on getting it finalized.
The 34-year-old Askren is undefeated (18-0-0-1) and has been retired since he defeated Shinya Aoki in less than a minute in November 2017. The 36-year-old Lawler has been on the shelf mending injuries since he was dominated by Rafael dos Anjos in December 2017. The former champion has lost two of his last three.
While never officially announced following the “trade” that brought his contract to the UFC and Demetrious Johnson’s contract to ONE, Askren was present at Saturday’s UFC 230 in New York City and did a media scrum where he called out a slew of fighters.
The show will also go head to head with Bellator’s heavyweight championship Grand Prix finals at the Forum in Inglewood, CA.

Mark Henry spoke to TMZ Sports about WWE going ahead with their plans to run Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia. When asked about Cena and reportedly Daniel Bryan pulling out of the show, he responded by saying “I wouldn’t never say that person is making the wrong decision. I would say that’s not the decision I would make. I would stand by my guns and do what’s best for business. I’m a firm believer in not leaving people out to dry, and I’ve done a lot of things in my career and in my life, my personal life, where I could say I’m not doing that. But there were people hanging in the balance and I didn’t want to screw those people over. So that’s the situation that this is in, our fans, they want to see you. You know, give our fans what they want.”
TMZ Sports also talked to Linda McMahon about wrestlers pulling out of Saudi Arabia. She denied knowing anything about the situation, saying “If you wanna talk WWE, you’re talking to the wrong McMahon.”

UFC/MMA
When asked by TMZ Sports who Ben Askren would face first in the UFC, Dana White didn’t get into specifics but said it would be someone in the top 5, citing his run as ONE’s welterweight champion. He also put over Demetrious Johnson, saying that he hopes he will be happier in ONE.
Meanwhile, Ben Askren is asking on Twitter why UFC hasn’t made an official announcement yet regarding the trade.

The UFC and ONE Fighting Championship’s history-making trade has officially been agreed to.
ESPN’s Ariel Helwani reported today that the UFC has agreed to release Demetrious Johnson from his contract to allow him to sign with ONE Championship. ONE has also agreed to release Ben Askren in order for him to sign with the UFC.
Helwani noted that both fighters are expected to sign deals with their new promotions in the near future.
Johnson and Askren have both acknowledged the news on their Twitter accounts.
ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong wrote: “Please join me in welcoming the #1 pound-for-pound king, @MightyMouse, to ONE Championship! His extraordinary achievements speak for themselves, but I am most impressed by his character, his values, and his life story. #GOAT Thank you to @MightyMouse, @Benaskren, @ONEChampionship, @UFC, and @malkikawa for making the 1st trade in mixed martial arts history possible. #gratitude”
Johnson is 27-3 with one draw in his career, while Askren is 18-0 with one no contest and is a former welterweight champion for ONE and Bellator. After breaking the UFC record for most consecutive title defenses, Johnson lost the flyweight championship to Henry Cejudo at UFC 227 in August.
Helwani reported that “a plan was hatched” for Johnson to leave the UFC after his loss to Cejudo, but the UFC needed incentive to release him. Johnson’s management team pitched the idea of the trade, and all of the involved parties ended up agreeing to it. Johnson’s coach Matt Hume is also ONE’s vice president of operations.
While free agency has grown in importance in mixed martial arts, the concept of a trade between organizations has never fully made sense because of competition and logistics.
But in the current ‘anything is possible’ era of sports entertainment, a report Wednesday has the UFC and Asia’s ONE Fighting Championship discussing a historic trade that would send former UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson to ONE for former Bellator champion and currently retired Ben Askren.
Citing multiple sources, ESPN’s Ariel Helwani reported the news that was first discussed on MMA Junkie Radio. He said that a deal is on the table, but that nothing has been finalized. It’s unknown as of this time who proposed what and when.
Johnson (pictured) recently saw his historic run as champion ended at the hands of Henry Cejudo, and has been at odds with UFC president Dana White over the last two years on how he’s promoted and his relationship with the organization. He’s been in the UFC since 2011 following the WEC merger.
His head coach Matt Hume is VP of Operations for ONE, so, if a deal was done, that conflict of interest would need to be resolved.
Askren has also been at odds with White over the years, but has never competed in the UFC. After the undefeated welterweight split with Bellator near the end of the Bjorn Rebney era, he went to ONE in May 2014 and went unbeaten in six fights, retiring in November 2017. On social media, the possibility of Askren in UFC increased this year but he still is under contract with ONE.
ONE recently made waves with the signing of former UFC and Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez and while the promotion doesn’t have a firm presence in the U.S., moves like these would perhaps indicate something bigger on the horizon.
