Mark Shapiro confirms WWE’s use of AI, ‘Nick Khan & Triple H are using AI for storylines’

After our Dave Meltzer reported last October about a new hire brought into usher WWE’s growing use of AI in creative, TKO president Mark Shapiro confirmed the news in Monday’s company town hall meeting.

The latest news comes courtesy of Post Wrestling who obtained audio from the town hall. In their reporting, they gave the following quote from Shapiro who said using AI in WWE is “a major priority” for both efficiency and productivity.

“Nick Khan and Triple H are using AI for storylines with the WWE,” Shapiro said. “What’s resonating? What superstars are resonating? In what pockets of the country are they resonating? That helps us with, obviously, our content, our editorial, our creative, our mapping, our touring, and of course, maximizing revenue and getting our product out to the fans most in need of it.”

It’s unknown specifically how they are using it or with what partner. Meta appears the likely company due to their existing partnership with the UFC, but that is unconfirmed.

TKO chief financial officer Andrew Schleimer also spoke at the meeting and seemed to contradict Shapiro’s comments, saying they have only run “tests and pilots” and are in the early days.

From Post:

“He cited the use of AI for data and analytics on WWE and UFC consumers, as well as minor uses to enhance broadcasts.”

Report: More details on WWE using AI tools for creative

Further details on WWE using AI for their creative.

Fightful Select reported on Sunday that WWE’s creative team has been using AI tools “for years.” However, it is being used more like a creative assistant to determine things like when two wrestlers last had a match. It was also said that nobody on the creative team knew of anyone who used the AI system for more than “a couple of minutes.”

In regards to the recent new hire, Fightful’s report says that the creative team is under the impression that he is being brought in to find ways to have AI help remove background noise in shots, organize files quickly, or work on production elements of WWE’s shows as opposed to creative storylines. Fightful was also specifically told that AI will not replace the creative writing team, with one top star saying that “Michael Hayes, Paul Heyman and Ed Koskey are not AI.”

It was reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Cyrus Kowsari was brought in back in September as WWE’s senior director of creative strategy. Triple H introduced Kowsari to the creative team as someone that would “lead WWE’s transition into AI-based storytelling and integrate AI into creative services like video and graphics.”

WWE makes new hire to lead transition to AI-based storytelling & creative

In a sign of the technological times, WWE recently made a new hire that will lead the company’s transition into using artificial intelligence for both storytelling/creative and video & graphics.

In this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that Cyrus Kowsari was brought on in September as WWE’s senior director of creative strategy after several years at Asian-based MMA company ONE and media outlet Buzzfeed before that.

Meltzer reported that WWE chief creative officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque introduced Kowsari to the creative staff as someone that would “lead WWE’s transition into AI-based storytelling and integrate AI into creative services like video and graphics” which Levesque said was an inevitable shift when it comes to creative in wrestling.

Kowsari also said he will be a White House liaison with Levesque taking on more duties in politics like his involvement on the revived President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition.

WWE has already experimented with AI

Meltzer also reported that WWE has already experimented with AI via Writer Inc, an AI-based platform, but with less than desirable early results.

“(The platform) pitched a storyline where Bobby Lashley, who I guess AI thought was still with the company, could come back as a wrestler who was obsessed with Japanese culture and history. But the feeling is once bugs are worked out that AI will begin to have major impact on storyline direction,” he wrote, adding another unnamed promotion also tried out AI for the creative side but found whatever they were using couldn’t understand wrestling storylines.
