AEW vacates both World & Trios titles, Tournament of Champions announced

Both the AEW World and Trios titles are now vacant with one of the new champions being determined on tonight’s Dynamite with the other to be decided in a new tournament.

AEW head Tony Khan made the announcement via a taped promo at the onset of Dynamite without mentioning either CM Punk, the Young Bucks or Kenny Omega by name or why the belts were being vacated, only saying he was “forced to vacate” the titles following All Out.

The newly-created Trios titles, first won by Omega and the Bucks at All Out, will be up for grabs in the opening match of Dynamite as Death Triangle faces Best Friends & Orange Cassidy. Both were involved in the recent tournament.

For the World title, Khan announced the Grand Slam Tournament of Champions with a six-man field that begins tonight and will end at the Grand Slam edition of Dynamite in Queens, New York, on September 21st.

The tournament is made up of former champions in AEW and WWE while not mentioning the latter by name. The biggest example of this is Bryan Danielson who was referred to as a seven-time World Champion even though he has never held AEW gold.

In the first round, Hangman Page will take Danielson tonight in their third-ever meeting while Sammy Guevara faces Darby Allin in a battle of former TNT Champions on Friday’s Rampage.

Next week’s Dynamite in Albany, New York, will see the Danielson/Page winner take on former AEW World Champion Chris Jericho while the the Guevara/Allin winner faces former AEW World Champion Jon Moxley.

Punk had reclaimed the AEW World title Sunday by defeating Moxley, only to sustain a serious injury during the match itself that will require surgery. That, of course, was prior to the fight after the pay-per-view that came as a result of Punk’s post-event press conference comments toward Omega, the Bucks and others.

Omega, the Bucks and several other AEW officials were suspended while Punk’s employment status is still unknown as the company has yet to make an official statement on any of the suspensions.

The Elite advance to AEW Trios title tournament final at All Out

The Elite have advanced to the finals of the inaugural AEW Trios title tournament at All Out.

In another long and excellent main event on Wednesday’s Dynamite, Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks defeated United Empire’s Will Ospreay & Aussie Open to advance.

At Sunday’s pay-per-view, they will face the winner of Friday’s semifinal between Best Friends and a new Dark Order lineup comprised of former AEW World Champion Hangman Page, John Silver & Alex Reynolds.

Page joined the team Wednesday after 10 was revealed to be out due to a knee injury suffered last Friday. Evil Uno was to take his place until Andrade El Idolo took him out with a crutch in their dressing room. Page, of course, is a former member of The Elite which sets up intrigue if they advance to the final.

Wednesday’s match featured recent rivals Ospreay and Omega engaging in high-octane offense from the onset and throughout the match. All six men unloaded the tank throughout with a wide array of triple team moves.

The end came when Omega hit a V-trigger and the One Winged Angel on Kyle Fletcher to pick up the win.

The Elite’s path to the semifinals began with a win over Rush, Andrade and Dragon Lee while United Empire defeated Death Triangle in their opening match.

Kenny Omega returns on AEW Dynamite, advances in Trios tournament with Young Bucks

Kenny Omega is back.

Omega ended up being the surprise mystery partner of The Young Bucks on Wednesday’s AEW Rampage, defeating Andrade el Idolo, Rush, and Dragon Lee in the opening round of the AEW World Trios Championship tournament. This was Omega’s first match since last November, where he lost the AEW World Championship to Hangman Page at Full Gear. Omega scored the win for his team, pinning Dragon Lee with the One Winged Angel.

The closing moments of the show had Andrade and Rush turn on Lee, with Andrade laying out Lee with the hammerlock DDT and removing his mask. Omega and The Bucks were seen heading toward the ring as the show faded to black.

With the win, Omega and The Bucks move on to the second round. They will next face the winners of a match between Death Triangle (PAC, Penta Oscuro, and Rey Fenix) and NJPW’s United Empire (Will Ospreay, Mark Davis, and Kyle Fletcher) on next week’s Dynamite.

Back in March, it was reported that Omega was recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery and was scheduled to repair a sports hernia later that match. He also said that he was suffering from vertigo during his matches prior to taking time off.

AEW Trios Championship introduced on Dynamite, champions to be crowned at All Out

AEW tonight formally introduced the AEW Trios Championship.

During Wednesday’s Dynamite, it was announced that a tournament for the titles will begin soon, with the winners being crowned at All Out on September 4. It was not announced which teams would compete in the upcoming tournament.

Back in May, Tony Khan had mentioned that Khan had made Trios titles a long time ago.

“I saw Dave [Meltzer] reported it and nobody’s asked me on the record yet, but it is truthful that I have made the belts,” Khan said at the time. “I made them a long time ago, to be honest with you. They’ve never been seen, and I did have them made. I do have more championship belts in my possession that have never been unveiled than anybody might suspect.”

AEW introduced another new championship recently, the AEW All-Atlantic Championship, that has been defended on shows outside of the United States. PAC most recently defended the championship against Conor Mills on the July 23 RevPro Summer Sizzler event.

Tony Khan teases more AEW championships, confirms trios titles have been made

Tony Khan has confirmed that AEW Trios Championships have been made and also teased there could be other titles that have been as well.

During an interview with TSN, the AEW President revealed that he actually had the trios belts made a long time ago.

“I saw Dave [Meltzer] reported it and nobody’s asked me on the record yet, but it is truthful that I have made the belts,” Khan said. “I made them a long time ago, to be honest with you. They’ve never been seen, and I did have them made. I do have more championship belts in my possession that have never been unveiled than anybody might suspect.”

Khan continued to say that he had the TBS Championship in his office for months before anyone knew it was going to be unveiled. He also noted that the purchase of ROH opens up the door to using their titles as well.

“The Ring of Honor purchase and now the great stable of champions[hips] and IP and, not only the legacy of past events, but the great slate of, I think, potential future events we can do with Ring of Honor and all that was kind of a surprise to everybody that we kept under wraps, that came together more quickly, whereas the trios championships are something I’ve thought about for a long time.”

Finally, Khan teased other potential titles that he may be considering

“But there are more championship belts than people might think that I’ve had up my sleeve and the trios championship are, arguably, the foremost.”

AEW Trios Championship belts have been made

AEW is preparing to introduce trios titles into the promotion.

Championship belts have already been created and their introduction is said to be “just a matter of time.” Our own Dave Meltzer addressed the issue in Friday’s edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

“Trios title belts have been made so now it’s just a matter of when they pull the trigger,” Meltzer wrote. “Tony Khan was asked about making trios titles and gave the indication a few months ago what it was happening, but that they didn’t want to do the tournament until Kenny Omega was back.”

Khan addressed the issue during a media call to promote All Out last September. The AEW President noted that he will have more interest in a trios division after Kenny Omega has returned.

“We have a lot of great trios here,” Khan said. “I am very interested in it. I will be 100% honest with you, this is the most blunt answer I could give, I am much more receptive to doing it when Kenny Omega is back.”
