AEW Women’s Tag Team Cup rules, start date announced

A week after announcing the first-ever AEW Women’s Tag Team Cup tournament, the company laid out the “Deadly Draw” rules and format on Wednesday’s Dynamite.

The tourney will also begin on their YouTube channel this Monday at 7 PM.

  • The tournament will feature eight teams, all chosen via a random draw.
  • The sixteen female competitors will each draw a color with those drawing matching colors paired up.
  • The selections are final and can’t be appealed.

Backstage, former AEW Women’s Champion Nyla Rose, flanked by manager Vickie Guerrero, was seen making the first choice, drawing purple. Dasha Gonzalez then said they had the other person there who had drawn purple: Ariana Andrew, the former Cameron in WWE.

The 32-year-old has been out of wrestling since being released by WWE in 2016 after five years on both the main roster and NXT.

The full participant field, the rest of the pairings, the brackets and how the schedule of matches will play out is still unknown.

AEW announces ‘The Deadly Draw’ women’s tag team tournament

A women’s tag team cup tournament was announced tonight on AEW Dynamite.

The tournament, which was referred to as “The Deadly Draw”, will feature sixteen stars of AEW’s women’s roster forming eight teams. There weren’t many details involved, though the video did show much of the AEW’s roster including Brandi Rhodes, Allie, Penelope Ford, Anna Jay, Nyla Rose, and Big Swole.

“This is our opportunity to rise up and show the world what we are made of” the narrator in the video said.

The tournament will take place this summer, though there were no details as to when the tournament would begin.

The AEW Women’s championship in recent weeks has centered around Hikaru Shida, who defeated Nyla Rose in a Falls Count anywhere match to win the championship back at Double or Nothing. Shida pinned Penelope Ford to retain the title at Fyter Fest.

Rose has since taken Vickie Guerrero as her new manager.
