Cage match stipulation added to AEW World title match at Beach Break

The first-ever AEW singles clash between reigning World Champion Jon Moxley and Samoa Joe will now take place inside a steel cage.

The bout takes place on the Beach Break edition of Dynamite, set for Wednesday, May 14th in Chicago, Ilinois.

The news was announced Wednesday on Dynamite following another physical interaction with Joe and his AEW Trios Champion teammates in The Opps and the former champions in the Death Riders.

As Joe was choking out Moxley in the entrance aisle, Claudio Castagnoli delivered the same move to Katsuyori Shibata that he did several weeks ago to Hook, driving him stomach-first into a flipped over chair. After the heels ran away, a frustrated Joe then issued the challenge for their title clash to be in a cage which was later confirmed.

About Jon Moxley vs. Samoa Joe

Joe held the World title for nearly four months from December 2023’s Worlds End when he defeated MJF through April 2024’s Dynasty when he lost it to Swerve Strickland. This is his first opportunity at winning it back.

Moxley, in his fourth reign as champion, just surpassed the 200-day mark as current champion. He has six successful defenses since winning it last October from Bryan Danielson.

According to Cagematch, the two have only had one singles match: a December 2017 WWE Raw match that Joe won.

AEW Beach Break airing over two nights instead of four-hour block

As it turns out, next month’s AEW Beach Break editions of Dynamite and Collision will not be a single live four-hour block after all.

First noted by Post Wrestling after consulting both the latest TBS updated listings and with AEW officials, the Wednesday, May 14th Dynamite will be in its usual spot with Collision being taped afterward for air in its usual time slot on Saturday, May 17th. The night will take place at the NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

During this week’s Dynamite, Excalibur referenced a four-hour block of live programming for Beach Break which many took to mean just that considering the two four-hour live specials on the docket for June (Fyter Fest, Summer Blockbuster).

It will be the fourth overall Beach Break-themed night in company history dating back to 2021 and the second straight year the themed show has emanated from the Chicago area with last year’s event being held at the Wintrust Arena.

AEW’s April/May Schedule:

  • Wednesday, April 30: Dynamite in Norfolk, VA
  • Saturday, May 3: Dynamite in Atlantic City, NJ
  • Wednesday, May 7: Dynamite in Detroit, MI
  • Thursday, May 8: Collision in Detroit, MI
  • Wednesday, May 14: Dynamite (live) & Collision (taped) Beach Break in Chicago, IL

  • Sunday, May 25: Double or Nothing in Glendale, ZA
  • Wednesday, May 28: Dynamite (live) & Collision (taped) in El Paso, TX

AEW Beach Break Dynamite & Collision to be four-hour live special

The four-hour blocks of AEW action on TV will start earlier than June.

During Wednesday’s Dynamite, Excalibur revealed that Wednesday, May 14th will feature a four-hour live edition of Beach Break, encompassing both that night’s Dynamite and Collision.

The show will emanate from the NOW Arena in Chicago, Illinois, beginning at its usual 8 PM Eastern start time.

It becomes the third four-hour live special announced by AEW this month. Wednesday, June 4th will see a four-hour Fyter Fest from Denver, Colorado, while on Wednesday, June 11th, the four-hour Summer Blockbuster takes place in Portland, Oregon.

This week, AEW canceled the Saturday Collision for May 17th in Wichita, Kansas, moving it up to Chicago instead.

It will be the fourth overall Beach Break-themed night in company history dating back to 2021 and the second straight year the themed show has emanated from Chicago with last year’s event being held at the Wintrust Arena.
