IYO SKY wins WWE Women’s title at SummerSlam

Bianca Belair won the WWE Women’s Championship at SummerSlam — but her title reign was short-lived.

Two WWE Women’s Championship changes took place at Saturday night’s pay-per-view. First, Belair defeated Asuka and Charlotte Flair in a triple threat match to win the title. But just moments later, IYO SKY cashed in her Money in the Bank briefcase on Belair to become champion.

The story of the triple threat match revolved around Belair overcoming a knee injury. After briefly being taken out of the match, Belair limped back to the ring. When Charlotte had Belair in the Figure Eight, Asuka spit mist into Charlotte’s face. Asuka then went to kick Belair, but Belair cradled her to get the win.

SKY’s music hit and she and Bayley ran out with the Money in the Bank briefcase. They attacked Charlotte, Asuka, and Belair with the case. SKY struck Belair in the knee with the briefcase before cashing in. Once the bell rang, SKY hit a moonsault from the top rope and pinned Belair.

Dakota Kai, who underwent surgery in May for a torn ACL, joined her Damage CTRL stablemates in the ring to celebrate SKY’s victory.

SKY’s title win comes one year after Damage CTRL formed at SummerSlam 2022.

Asuka was the WWE Women’s Champion entering SummerSlam. She had defeated Belair to become champion this May.

New WWE Women’s title belt unveiled, Charlotte Flair returns

A new WWE Women’s Championship was unveiled on SmackDown, which brought the return of Charlotte Flair.

SmackDown on Friday had WWE official Adam Pearce present Raw Women’s Champion Asuka with a new championship belt, similar to the recent championship Roman Reigns was given on last week’s SmackDown but with a white strap. Going forward, Asuka will be referred to as the WWE Women’s Champion.

This brought out Charlotte Flair, who has not been seen on television since WrestleMania 39. She immediately demanded a championship match. Pearce, who had promised Bianca Belair a rematch earlier in the show, told Flair she would need to get in line. Flair dismissed the idea as Asuka accepted. The two got into a brawl, with Flair avoiding the mist and laying out Asuka with a big boot. The match was later made official for the June 30 edition of SmackDown, just one day prior to Money in the Bank.

Later backstage, after Belair confronted Pearce, he told Belair he’d try to make it right.

The Raw Women’s Championship is the Women’s Championship introduced in 2016, replacing the Divas Championship. A second title, the SmackDown Women’s Championship, was established later that year. That title is currently held by Rhea Ripley.
