The Rock originally planned for WWE Survivor Series appearance

Sunday’s WWE Survivor Series was originally supposed to feature Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. And for anyone watching last night, it was blatantly obvious that was the plan.

In July, I was told that the Brooklyn, New York, pay-per-view would be centered around Johnson. Between heavily promoting his new Red Notice movie on Netflix, the 25th anniversary of his WWE debut that took place in New York City, NBC’s renewal of Young Rock, and the second season of the Ruthless Aggression documentary series, the timing was perfect.

Yet another source informed me that there were hopes for Johnson to be on Monday’s Raw, dependent on his schedule. I personally didn’t see this as happening.

In late-September, the same source told me that Johnson would not be on Survivor Series due to his filming schedule and needing to quarantine for travel. However, there was still a financial obligation to continue with the plan for the movie promotion without Johnson which is what we saw last night. The basic concept stayed the same, minus Johnson himself.

Although it was fun taking a trip down memory lane, it felt like WWE was throwing a surprise party for a guest of honor that never arrived.

Report: WWE talent set for ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’

WWE talent will appear on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week to promote Survivor Series, according to a report.

Fightful Select reports that WWE Champion Big E, Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch, Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, Bianca Belair, The Miz, Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins are involved in filming a segment for the Colbert show.

The Late Show appearance will come the same week that Roman Reigns is set to appear on NBC’s The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. The Colbert appearance is notable due to the lack of a relationship between WWE and CBS, which airs The Late Show. The Tonight Show on NBC is under the same NBCUniversal corporate banner as the USA Network, which airs WWE Raw and NXT.

Here is the lineup for Survivor Series:

WWE Survivor Series, Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, Sunday, November 21 —

  • Non-title match: WWE Champion Big E vs. Universal Champion Roman Reigns
  • Non-title match: Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch vs. SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair
  • Non-title match: Raw Tag Team Champions RK-Bro (Randy Orton & Riddle) vs. SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso)
  • Non-title match: United States Champion Damian Priest vs. Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura
  • Women’s five-on-five elimination match: Team Raw (Bianca Belair, Rhea Ripley, Liv Morgan, Carmella & Zelina Vega) vs. Team SmackDown (Sasha Banks, Shayna Baszler, Shotzi, Natalya, and a partner)
  • Men’s five-on-five elimination match: Team Raw (Seth Rollins, Finn Balor, Kevin Owens, Bobby Lashley & Austin Theory) vs. Team SmackDown (Drew McIntyre, Jeff Hardy, Xavier Woods, Baron Corbin, and a partner)

WWE bringing Survivor Series weekend to Houston, TX in 2017

Despite much of the focus being on this Sunday’s Survivor Series pay-per-view, WWE is already making plans for next year’s event.

The Houston Chronicle reported on Wednesday night that Survivor Series 2017 is set to take place at the Toyota Center in Houston, TX. Like this year’s show, WWE is planning a marathon weekend around the “big four” PPV but will instead run four straight nights in the building in 2017.

The Toyota Center also confirmed the news on Twitter.

Kicking off the weekend will be an NXT TakeOver special, which is set for Saturday, November 18th. Survivor Series, Raw, and SmackDown will then take place on successive nights. Tickets for Survivor Series go on sale at 11 a.m. ET on December 9th, and WWE will also have travel packages for the event going on sale at 12 p.m. ET on December 6th.

With next year’s Royal Rumble already announced for San Antonio, this news means that WWE will be bringing two of their biggest weekends of the year to Texas in 2017.

Following this year’s event headlined by Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar, the Chronicle notes that next year will be the 30th anniversary of Survivor Series after the show originally debuted in 1987.
