Another NXT wrestler is set to appear on tonight’s episode of 205 Live.
WWE has announced that Raul Mendoza will be teaming with Humberto Carrillo against The Lucha House Party (Kalisto & Gran Metalik) tonight. It’s being billed as an NXT vs. 205 Live match, though Carrillo is also regularly on 205 Live.
Mendoza & Carrillo have previously teamed together in NXT.
This will be the first time Mendoza has wrestled on 205 Live. After taking part in the Cruiserweight Classic in 2016 and losing to Brian Kendrick in the first round, Mendoza signed with WWE in 2017.
Cruiserweight Champion Drew Gulak is facing NXT’s Isaiah “Swerve” Scott (Shane Strickland) in a non-title match on tonight’s 205 Live. There will also be a contract signing for Drake Maverick vs. Mike Kanellis.
WWE has yet to announce when Maverick vs. Kanellis will take place. If Kanellis wins, he’ll get a shot at the Cruiserweight title.
The American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida is hosting tonight’s SmackDown and 205 Live.

Raw will be Monday night in Lexington, KY. There will also be a Monday night Smackdown house show in Huntington, WV.
Smackdown and 205 Live will be taped on Tuesday in Columbus, OH.
Raw and SmackDown’s post-WrestleMania rosters were confirmed over the past week as WWE held their third annual Superstar Shake-up.
The most notable names to switch brands were AJ Styles and Roman Reigns. Styles had been the face of SmackDown since the 2016 brand split but is now a member of the Raw roster. Reigns had been on Raw since the 2016 draft but was moved to SmackDown in this year’s Shake-up, which comes in advance of SmackDown debuting on Fox in October.
While last week was supposed to be the Superstar Shakeup, lots of things happened this past week that caused plans to change.
The biggest thing was the about-face of breaking up the relationship between Ashley Fliehr (Charlotte Flair) and Manny Andrade by putting them on different brands. The relationship wasn’t a secret and the decision was made with knowledge of this. But it didn’t play out well in real life so it was reversed with Andrade moving back to Smackdown the next week. Because they didn’t want to break up the Andrade/Zelina Vega act, they moved Thea Trinidad (Vega) back to Smackdown as well. Unfortunately, then they were breaking up a married couple, so her husband, Tom Budgen (Aleister Black) also had to be moved to Smackdown.
That broke up the Ricochet & Aleister Black tag team, and based on Ricochet losing to a repackaged Bobby Roode, now back to doing the Robert Roode character with a Don Frye mustache, the orders from above to protect the second run of NXT call-ups ended.

FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE
We have a new Observer Radio show up todaycovering WWE financials, as well as talking to both Jon Fitch and Ilima-lei Macfarlane prior to their Bellator title fights Saturday, with Fitch talking about training, dieting and why depression led to his using steroids, and Macfarlane going in detail on how she put together one of the greatest ring entrances in the industry in December. This is a rare free show for me.
WWE stock closed today at $83.52, so it still fell after the bad day yesterday.
WWE has no house shows this weekend. The original plan was to run in Saudi Arabia this coming Friday, so they were giving people the week off before the plan to fly out. When the show was moved, there were no buildings booked.
Gail Kim said it took a lot to convince her to do the match Sunday with Tessa Blanchard and said that while you never say never, this is her final match.
Something that has gone under the radar is that in the prelims in San Jose for Bellator tomorrow will be the debut of Boris Novachkov. Novachkov, who grew up in Sunnyvale, CA, competed for Bulgaria in the most recent Olympics in wrestling and placed second in the 2011 NCAA tournament and third in 2012 while wrestling for Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. He also placed third in the 2014 European championships.
WWE
WWE has announced a 6/15 show in Anaheim at the Honda Center.
The early word on the injury to Raul Mendoza is that it doesn’t appear to be that serious, but it won’t be evaluated until Monday. The injury to referee Tom Castor looked bad, a probable serious broken ankle.
Advertising in Columbus, OH for Tuesday’s Smackdown show lists Kofi Kingston vs. Kevin Owens, with Erick Rowan in his corner, as the main event. So they are at least advertising that’s Rowan’s destination.

The South of Heaven chokeslam got the win for Martinez.
– Dominik Dijakovic defeated Kona Reeves
Dijakovic finished this with Feast Your Eyes.
– Kairi Sane & Io Shirai defeated Aliyah & Vanessa Borne, Mia Yim & Xia Li, and Marina Shafir & NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler in a four-way elimination tag match
Sane and Shirai submitted Borne and Aliyah with double submissions in the first fall. In the second fall, Baszler choked out Li.
Sane and Shirai hit a double team-assisted elbow drop and moonsault on Shafir to win.
– Mansoor Al-Shehail was cutting an in-ring promo about his dreams of being in WWE when he was interrupted by Adam Cole, who granted his own wish of having a match right now.
– Adam Cole defeated Mansoor Al-Shehail
Cole hit the Last Shot to the back of the head to win. Cole made it clear that he hates Tampa, with him not even doing the “Bay Bay” for the crowd.
– Kacy Catanzaro & NXT North American Champion Ricochet defeated Rhea Ripley & Shane Thorne
The crowd loved this match. It got “this is awesome” chants, and everyone played off of each other. Ricochet hit a great running Shooting Star Press. Catanzaro hit a few incredible moves, including a spinning stunner and a twisting splash. Great stuff.
– Jeet Rama defeated Riddick Moss
Rama got a roll-up victory over Moss.
– NXT Tag Team Champions The Undisputed Era (Roderick Strong & Bobby Fish) defeated Humberto Carrillo & Raul Mendoza to retain their titles
Excellent match. There were stereo dives to the outside by Carrillo and Mendoza, but Strong and Fish were just too much for them. Fish won with a knee strike. The crowd loved both teams and this match.
In 2018, we saw that from the top of WrestleMania down to the Performance Center tryouts, nothing compares to top tier athletes in pro wrestling.
The percentage of talent who actually become great wrestlers is still incredibly low. There aren’t many Ronda Rouseys out there with the love of WWE to dive into this world, yet, in 2018, we saw a special group on the Florida tour that showed flashes of brilliance. These are a few of those names to watch in 2019 as NXT continues to refine these incredible people into, hopefully, larger than life superstars.
Kacy Catanzaro
An instant hit with her showing in the Mae Young Classic, the former American Ninja Warrior star has adapted her college gymnastics expertise into her in-ring style. A successful rookie year in terms of attention along with the foundation of wrestling with and against some great talent on the NXT Florida loop sets the stage for her future. There aren’t many talents with twenty three matches in to a career that you can compare to “Mighty” Kacy.
Stacey Ervin Jr.
In 2018, the live event legend of Stacey Ervin grew at a rapid pace. We always read about new recruits and what they excel at. Mr. Ervin just to happens to be one of the greatest gymnasts to ever try to cross in to the world of professional wrestling. Fourteen matches in to his career, Stacey has already faced veterans such as Tony Nese, Kassius Ohno, and a major test for any athlete in the profession, Ricochet, in the main event of an Orlando live event. There is no limit to what Ervin can do in the ring; it’s just a matter of time to see his progression.
Xia Li
A two time Mae Young Classic competitor and one of the best kept secrets of the P.C. in that time, Li was part of a major Chinese recruitment class a couple years ago and has become a standout in just a few televised appearances along with quality showings on the Florida events. With a fighter’s presence and a flashy charm I’ve seen Florida crowds go wild for and the barrage of kicks she has in her arsenal, a TV run should be on the way soon.
Raul Mendoza and Humberto Carrillo
You’ve probably seen each of these young luchadors on TV doing enhancement work, Mendoza (fka Jinzo) was part of the Cruiserweight Classic and has always showed flashes of brilliance against much more established opponents. Carrillo was a very under the radar signing and the former Ultimo Ninja is in his early 20s. These two have found something special on the Florida live event tour. Whenever the NXT tag team division needs a jump start or if 205 Live wants some fresh speed lucha action, these guys are money.
Mauro Ranallo introduced us to the show as we go right to video packages.
Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Tyson Dux
Tyson Dux mentions how he injured his ACL in a Velocity match back in 2004, and he says that the Cruiserweight Classic is his opportunity to make a statement. It kind of came off like he has never wrestled since even though he’s been wrestling for years since the injury.
Zack Sabre Jr. has a passion for wrestling as he’s always idolized Eddie Guerrero and Chris Jericho. When you love something and put the time and effort in, the rewards come.
Sabre did his chain wrestling to start, escaping out of a lot of Dux’s holds and working on the arm. Sabre went for the Jim Breaks special, but Dux escaped and got the heat. Sabre came back with an octopus stretch, then landed a Penalty Kick for the near fall.
Dux went for a cloverleaf, but Sabre managed to escape and land in an omoplata, then wrenched the fingers for the win. This was great technically, but the crowd just didn’t seem to be into it.
Corey Graves is back at the CWC control room. We’re now into the second half of the first round. In the second round, Sabre will face the winner of the upcoming Drew Gulak vs. Harv Sihra Match.
Drew Gulak defeated Harv Sihra
Gulak says to win this tournament, it will take drive and determination. He says that it has always been a slow grind, and to be in WWE in surreal.
Harv Sihra says to represent India in WWE is unreal. He wondered what he could do to represent India without being stereotypical and he chose to go for a Bollywood style. He’s the one guy that can prove people wrong here.
Gulak worked more of a stiff style while Sihra was more fluid and high flying. Both looked good in what they did. Gulak body-slammed Sihra on the floor at one point, which probably wasn’t fun. Gulak trapped him in a dragon sleeper then applied a body scissors for the win.
So that means we’ll see Drew Gulak vs. Zack Sabre Jr. in the second round.
Tony Nese defeated Anthony Bennett
Tony Nese says he is the premiere athlete because pound-for-pound he’s one of the strongest and quickest guys in the tournament. He says that it’s his time to show the world who he is.
Anthony Bennett says he has always been an underdog, and it’s time for him to make a name for himself. His catchphrase is “This kid don’t play,” since he has a hairstyle similar to Kid from Kid ‘N Play.
Bennett is tiny compared to Nese. Hey, he did say he was only 5’11 even with the hair. Both guys looked good, more of a back and forth match with no real distinct styles shown unlike in previous matches tonight.
Weird finish as Nese gave Bennett a powerslam and seemed to have been knocked out. The referee stopped Nese and checked on Bennett momentarily before giving the okay, and Nese got the win with a 450 splash.
Brian Kendrick defeated Raul Mendoza
Back in the CWC control room, Graves kicks it to more video packages. Raul Mendoza mentions how Eddie Guerrero was an inspiration, and as long as he puts in the hard work and dedication, he has lived his dream. Kendrick says this is his second chance in life because without wrestling, he’s just living.
Mendoza worked his lucha style early and looked good. He swung around Kendrick and put him in a body scissors/sharpshooter submission but Kendrick escaped.
Kendrick worked heel and got the heat. Mendoza was bleeding from the mouth as Kendrick charged at him, but he made a comeback and did a great corkscrew plancha to the floor then followed that with a big coast to coast dropkick.
Kendrick played possum and threw Mendoza into the ropes, then landed a reverse headlock into a bully choke for the win. Mendoza showed a ton here and got a lot more over than Kendrick by the end.
Final Thoughts
Overall, another fun show this week. Sabre brings a different style to the program that not too many at Full Sail understood, but that’s cool as it’s something new. Hopefully it takes off.
Everything else looked good and there were a lot of fun matches to be had. Commentary as usual is always on point and sounds like a smart, mindful broadcast, which is always nice.
Next week will culminate the first round of the tournament. NXT talent Rich Swann will take on Jason Lee, Noam Dar faces Gurv Sihra, Jack Gallagher clashes with Fabien Aichner, and in the main event Tommaso Ciampa will take on his tag team partner Johnny Gargano.
