WWE NXT live results: TakeOver Vengeance Day fallout

The fallout from TakeOver: Vengeance Day takes place on tonight’s episode of NXT.

NXT Champion Finn Balor retained his title against Pete Dunne in the main event of Sunday’s TakeOver show. But the show-closing angle saw Adam Cole lay out Balor with a superkick and then lay out his Undisputed Era stablemate Kyle O’Reilly when O’Reilly was furious about what Cole did to Balor.

Undisputed Era had made the save for Balor as he was being beaten down by Oney Lorcan, Danny Burch, and Dunne following the main event. After Cole superkicked O’Reilly, Undisputed Era’s Roderick Strong looked conflicted about what had happened.

An appearance by O’Reilly will kick off tonight’s show.

Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez and MSK were crowned as Dusty Classic winners at TakeOver, defeating Shotzi Blackheart & Ember Moon and The Grizzled Young Veterans in their respective tournament finals. Kai & Gonzalez will be getting a shot at Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler’s WWE Women’s Tag Team titles and MSK will be getting a shot at Lorcan & Burch’s NXT Tag Team titles, but WWE hasn’t announced when those matches will be taking place.

Blackheart & Moon will be in action against Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell tonight.

We’ll see what’s next for NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai and NXT North American Champion Johnny Gargano after they retained their titles at TakeOver. We also may see LA Knight (the former Eli Drake) appear tonight after he made his debut on the TakeOver pre-show.

Our live coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

**********

The show opened with Kyle O’Reilly. He swiftly grabbed a microphone and got straight to the point, saying he still can’t make sense of Adam Cole’s attack at NXT Takeover: Vengeance Day. O’Reilly practically begged Cole to explain himself, but Roderick Strong came out instead.

Strong defended Cole’s actions, saying his attack on O’Reilly was justified purely off emotions. O’Reilly was having none of it and told Strong to keep his nose out of his business.

NXT Champion Finn Balor interrupted both men and told O’Reilly to get in line behind him for an explanation. Pete Dunne and the NXT Tag Team Champions Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch interrupted and jumped all three men. Dunne and company stood tall to end the segment.

NXT GM William Regal made the announcement that Santos Escobar vs Karrion Kross would not take place tonight. Escobar had a short phone promo just saying he was going home. Regal rescheduled the match for next week and said if Escobar doesn’t show up, he’ll be stripped of the NXT Cruiserweight Championship and suspended.

Regal made Dunne, Lorcan and Burch vs Balor, Strong and O’Reilly the new main event of the program.

Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart defeated Candice LeRae and Indi Hartwell (w/ Johnny Gargano)

Moon and LeRae started off. They exchanged a few basic holds before both women tagged out. LeRae came back in pretty quickly and the heels began to dominate, working over the ankle of Blackheart.

Blackheart got momentum back after trapping both of her opponents in the ropes and booting both of them in their heads. Moon tagged and LaRae cut the ring in half almost instantly. A white van appeared driving up to the venue on screen, distracting LaRae for a moment.

LaRae continued to wear down Moon, not letting Blackheart tag in. Hartwell came in a few times but her offense looked pretty bad. The van appeared on screen again and Gargano took off towards the back.

Blackheart finally got the babyface hot tag and had a few near falls on Hartwell. Cameras cut back again to the white van and showed Gargano banging on the doors and windows but to no avail.

Moon and Blackheart hit a nice double team backbreaker on LaRae. Gargano appeared on the stage to show that he recovered Theory which distracted Hartwell and Moon took advantage and rolled her up for the win.

~

Pat McAfee (the best promo in Wrestling) appeared from his private jet. He gloated about being right about Adam Cole being a “scumbag”. McAfee said he’d see NXT soon and called the Internet Wrestling Community a bunch of stooges.

~

Kushida appeared in the trainer’s room and was being interviewed, but Bronson Reed interrupted him. Reed said he’s still waiting for his shot at Gargano too and told Kushida to rest up. Malcom Bivens appeared from behind and called Kushida’s Takeover performance great and encouraged him to have a match tonight to prove himself even more.

~

Leon Ruff defeated Isaiah “Swerve” Scott

Scott got control early and practically dominated for the first half of the match. Scott taunted and laughed at Ruff until he came back with some fiery offense and a flying cutter. Some heel tendencies being shown from Scott.

Scott was being egotistical and cocky and in the moment of hesitation, Ruff trapped Scott in a crucifix pin and got the three count. After the bell Scott began to destroy Ruff.

~

Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter defeated Aliyah and Jessi Kamea (w/ Robert Stone)

Carter and Catanzaro exchanged a few tag in and outs and double team maneuvers until Boa appeared on stage which seemed to distract Carter. Catanzaro came in and made light work of Aliyah, pinning her quickly.

Xia Li and Boa approached Catanzaro and Carter after their match. Li marked Catanzaro with some type of marker and seemingly challenged her to a match next week.

This is only the second time tonight that a women’s tag team match ended with some spooky distraction finish. Delightful stuff (sarcasm). Except this match went about 1/10th the length of what the other match did.

~

Dusty Classic Tag Team Winners Circle

Beth Phoenix is out to present the trophy to the winning teams.

MSK are out first. They admire the trophy and hug Phoenix. Carter announces they’re challenging Burch and Lorcan for the NXT tag titles on the March 3rd edition of NXT.

Gonzalez and Kai are out next. Kai said they were by far the best tag team in the tournament. Shayna Baszler’s music hits and the Women’s Tag Team Champions hit the ring. Baszler taunted Kai about breaking her arm a few years back.

Jax said she was just here to honor the late Dusty Rhodes. Baszler laid down the challenge for the March 3rd episode of NXT.

~

“Billionaire” Cameron Grimes had a video package. He wrecked his Lamborghini and laughed it off and said he’d just buy another one. This is a really brilliant way to use Grimes, although it might have a short shelf life.

~

Kushida defeated Tyler Rust (w/ Malcolm Bivens)

Rust seemed to counter the majority of Kushida’s offense early. Kushida turned up the heat pretty fast though and capped off a series of great offense with a flipping powerbomb. Kushida tried to capitalize by going to the top rope but Rust yanked him off and he smacked head first into the mat. Rust worked on the arm into the commercial break.

Back from the break and Kushida got hot again. Kushida tried a Hoverboard lock but instead just threw Rust into the mat. Rust recovered quickly and clocked Kushida in the head with a kick. Kushida practically no sold it and locked in the Hoverboard lock for the win.

~

A recap aired of LA Knight’s (f.k.a Eli Drake) promo on the Takeover pre show. Knight had another promo from his home where he claimed he’s the hottest free agent no more and that he’s ready to kick some heads off.

~

Zoey Stark defeated Valentina Feroz

Stark and Feroz traded stiff knee strikes and punches in the beginning of the match. Stark put any competitiveness to the imagination quickly though, launching Feroz over her head with half and half suplex.

Stark hit a few running knees then hit a modified GTS for the win.

~

Karrion Kross gave Santos Escobar an ultimatum in a promo. He told Escobar he had two choices: To get his skull caved in on live television or to run away scared.

~

Pete Dunne, Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch defeated Finn Balor, Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong.

O’Reilly and Lorcan started off the match. O’Reilly had a lot of pent up aggression and he didn’t show any remorse on Lorcan. Balor and O’Reilly tagged in and out and hit multiple double team maneuvers. Strong eventually tagged in along with Dunne tagging in as well.

Dunne and Strong were in the ring together for a good while before O’Reilly got a phenomenal hot tag and almost took out all of his opponents until he ran into a forearm from Dunne. Dunne worked on the neck of O’Reilly throughout a picture-in-picture break.

Burch and Dunne tagged in and out taking turns working on O’Reilly. Balor finally got the hot tag and cleared a path. Dunne almost rolled Balor up but he escaped. Balor went to kick Dunne in the corner but the referee got caught in the middle of it.

Balor still went to the top but Adam Cole appeared and shoved Balor off the top rope. Cole followed it up by clocking O’Reilly with a kick and a suplex. Roderick Strong came in the ring and tried to get Balor’s attention, but Balor accidentally kicked him in the face. Dunne used the distraction and hit the bitter end which allowed him to pin the NXT Champion for the win.

Cole came back after the match and attacked Balor again. Cole stood tall with the NXT Title to end the broadcast.

*******

Final Thoughts: Nothing too special happened for this week’s episode, but that’s expected given it’s the show after the PPV. I was surprised to see so many people that wrestled at Takeover wrestling on this show tonight, very unusual for NXT. Main event was a great match and Dunne pinning Balor was great and was unexpected. Both women’s tag matches ending in distraction was a eh for me, especially when you have a women’s tag team championship match you’re promoting for the March 3rd show.

In regards to the Theory/Gargano stuff: Why wasn’t his disappearance explained? He just randomly appeared back on stage. I’m sure they’ll explain it eventually but it just came off weird. All in all, it was an above average episode of NXT.

Kyle O’Reilly to kick off WWE NXT, Blackheart & Moon vs. The Way set

– An appearance by Kyle O’Reilly will open tonight’s TakeOver: Vengeance Day fallout edition of NXT.

After he was involved in the show-closing angle at Sunday’s TakeOver event, WWE has announced that O’Reilly will kick off tonight’s show. TakeOver: Vengeance Day ended with Adam Cole laying out NXT Champion Finn Balor and O’Reilly with superkicks.

Balor retained his NXT Championship against Pete Dunne in the main event of TakeOver: Vengeance Day but was attacked by Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch after the match. Lorcan, Burch, and Dunne beat down Balor until Undisputed Era (Cole, O’Reilly, and Roderick Strong) ran down to make the save.

O’Reilly then helped Balor up and told him how much he respects him. Undisputed Era posed in the ring and Balor was about to do his own pose, but Cole gave him a superkick. Cole then superkicked O’Reilly after O’Reilly argued with him about what he did to Balor. Strong looked conflicted between his Undisputed Era stablemates as the show went off the air.

WWE uploaded video of what happened after TakeOver ended. Balor asked O’Reilly who he trusts — and O’Reilly responded by saying he doesn’t trust anyone right now. Balor said he doesn’t know if he trusts O’Reilly either. Balor told O’Reilly to be careful because he isn’t going to clean up O’Reilly’s mess.

– WWE has also announced that Shotzi Blackheart & Ember Moon vs. The Way’s Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell will take place on NXT tonight. Blackheart & Moon defeated LeRae & Hartwell on NXT last Wednesday to advance to the finals of the women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez then defeated Blackheart & Moon at TakeOver: Vengeance Day to become the first-ever women’s Dusty Classic winners.

WWE will follow up on Kai & Gonzalez and MSK’s Dusty Classic wins tonight. As the women’s Dusty Classic winners, Kai & Gonzalez will get a shot at Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler’s WWE Women’s Tag Team titles at some point. MSK will also get a shot at Lorcan & Burch’s NXT Tag Team titles. WWE hasn’t announced when either of those matches will be happening.

Plus, WWE is advertising that NXT North American Champion Johnny Gargano will be searching for Austin Theory’s whereabouts after Theory was abducted by Dexter Lumis at TakeOver: Vengeance Day. Gargano retained his North American title by defeating Kushida at TakeOver.

Karrion Kross vs. Santos Escobar has been announced for tonight’s show but isn’t currently listed on WWE.com’s preview.

Undisputed Era implode in WWE NXT TakeOver show-closing angle

Undisputed Era imploded with Adam Cole laying out Kyle O’Reilly in the show-closing angle of NXT TakeOver: Vengeance Day.

After Finn Balor retained his NXT Championship against Pete Dunne in the main event of tonight’s TakeOver event, Balor was attacked on the stage by Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch. Dunne, Lorcan, and Burch then beat down Balor in the ring until Undisputed Era (Cole, O’Reilly, and Roderick Strong) ran out and chased them off. O’Reilly helped Balor up and told him how much he respects him. Undisputed Era posed in the ring and Balor was about to do his own pose, but Cole then dropped him with a superkick.

O’Reilly was furious with Cole and said what he did to Balor was “bullsh*t.” Strong tried to keep the peace between his stablemates, but Cole then laid out O’Reilly with a superkick as well. The show ended with Strong looking conflicted after what Cole had done.

Balor retained his NXT Championship against O’Reilly at TakeOver 31 in October and at NXT New Year’s Evil last month. Balor & O’Reilly defeated Lorcan & Burch on NXT three weeks ago after O’Reilly agreed to team with Balor.

Balor became NXT Champion by defeating Cole for the vacant title in September. The title had been vacated by Karrion Kross after he suffered a separated shoulder during the match where he won the NXT Championship from Keith Lee in August.

Undisputed Era weren’t in action at TakeOver: Vengeance Day tonight. Cole & Strong made it to the quarterfinals of the men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic before being eliminated. Undisputed Era member Bobby Fish underwent triceps surgery in December. Dave Meltzer reported at the time that Fish was expected to be out of action for about eight weeks.

WWE NXT live results: Balor & O’Reilly vs. Lorcan & Burch

NXT Champion Finn Balor has enlisted the help of his most recent title challenger for tonight’s episode of NXT.

Balor & Kyle O’Reilly will team up against NXT Tag Team Champions Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch in a non-title match. On NXT two weeks ago, O’Reilly and Undisputed Era came to Balor’s aid after he was attacked by Pete Dunne, Lorcan, and Burch. Balor then helped O’Reilly when he was attacked by Dunne, Lorcan, and Burch later in the night.

Balor went to NXT general manager William Regal last week and said he wants to face Dunne, but he knows the game Dunne is playing. Balor wanted to face Lorcan & Burch first, but Regal told Balor he would have to find a partner. After initially saying he only has enemies now, Balor said there were some people around here who owed him a favor. Balor went to Undisputed Era and asked if O’Reilly was in to team with him. O’Reilly agreed.

The quarterfinals of the men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic will kick off with Kushida & Leon Ruff vs. The Grizzled Young Veterans and MSK vs. Drake Maverick & Killian Dain taking place tonight. The first round of the women’s Dusty Classic will continue with Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez vs. Aliyah & Jessi Kamea.

Plus, Santos Escobar will defend his NXT Cruiserweight Championship against Curt Stallion. Our live coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

**********

The show opened with a Dusty Classic tournament match.

MSK (Nash Carter & Wes Lee) defeated Drake Maverick & Killian Dain to advance in the Dusty Classic tournament

Carter pinned Maverick, and MSK advances to the semifinals.

As the match got going, MSK cut off Maverick and kept him in their corner. Quicks tags and teamwork by MSK. Hot tag to Dain, and he cleaned house. Teamwork by Maverick & Dain with double-team moves. Nearfall broken up by Lee.

MSK cuts off Dain and they look to capitalize, but Dain hulked up. Dain shoved Lee off the turnbuckles, and Lee tumbles to the floor before a the show goes to a picture-in-picture commercial break.

Maverick & Dain work over Lee during the commercial break. They were still in control when the show returned from the break. Hot tag to Carter, and he was on fire. MSK with their assisted standing moonsault. Carter with an Asai moonsault to the floor.

Lee rolled up by Maverick for a two count, and Maverick soon eats a back elbow. Tag to Carter and MSK execute their Hart Attack/Blockbuster combo. Carter then covered Maverick for a pinfall.

The NXT Tag Team Champions arrived at the building. Danny Burch & Oney Lorcan are in the main event later on tonight.

Curt Stallion had a sit-down interview conducted by McKenzie Mitchell. Stallion talked about making towns from West Texas to Chicago. I saw him in some of those Texas towns. He talked about seeing shooting stars and following that stardom, or something like that. He will get a rocket strapped to his back, and the “Lone Star” will become a Superstar.

Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai defeated Jessi Kamea & Aliyah (with Robert Stone) to advance in the Women’s Dusty Classic

Gonzalez pinned Kamea in this first round match. Gonzalez & Kai move on to the quarterfinals.

Aliyah tried to match-up with Gonzalez, but she soon tagged it. Kamea soon found herself tied up by Gonzalez in a Gory Special. Kamea escaped to fire up on Gonzalez, but Kai caused a distraction. Kai tagged in, but Kamea soon scoop slammed her. Kai was reeling after teamwork by The Robert Stone Brand.

Aliyah went for a baseball slide, but Gonzalez pulled Kai to safety. Aliyah then ran into a high kick from Gonzalez. Power moves by Gonzalez for a near fall. Kai with a face wash for a two count. Assisted double stomp by Kai for another two count.

Kai caught with a swinging DDT, allowing Aliyah to tag out. Kamea jumped into the ring, but she ran right into a lariat from Gonzalez. Kamea then took a chokeslam bomb by Gonzalez, and Gonzalez covered her for a pinfall.

Tyler Rust (with Malcolm Bivens) defeated enhancement talent

Rust won via submission. The match was mostly all Rust, except when he became distracted by his own manager. Rust quickly came back with a Rings of Saturn to submit someone possibly named Rios.

Bivens took a selfie after the match.

Grizzled Young Veterans (James Drake and Zack Gibson) defeated Leon Ruff & Kushida to advance in the Dusty Classic

Drake pinned Ruff, and Grizzled Young Veterans advacne to the semifinals.

The Vets had an early advantage, but Kushida & Ruff soon fired up into a series of double-team moves. Drake & Gibson were reeling as the show went to a commercial break.

Heat on Ruff after the break as The Vets kept him from making a tag. Finally, Ruff was able to tag out. Kushida flew into the ring off a hot tag, and he was on fire. The Vets traded places, and Kushida tied up Gibson too.

Kushida cut off, and he takes a Doomsday Device! Kushida managed to kick out for a near fall. Handspring back elbow takes down The Vets.

Ruff flew into action with with springboard missile. He then sailed through the ropes with a tope suicida. Ruff launched himself off the turnbuckles for flip dive to the floor. However, Ruff missed a swanton bomb.

Ruff takes a Ticket To Mayhem, and Drake covered Ruff for a pinfall.

Johnny Gargano & Austin Theory attacked Kushida & Ruff after the match. The Way jumped them, and Kushida was laid out by Gargano. Dexter Lumis appeared at ringside, and that frightened Theory.

Curt Stallion was supposedly attacked backstage. William Regal asked him what happened, and Stallion blamed El Legado del Fantasma. The match for the NXT Cruiserweight title is now off. Champion Santos Escobar was being interviewed backstage when Regal confronted him. Regal said Esobar will defend against Stallion next week, and if Stallion is attacked again there will be “serious consequences” for the rudos.

Toni Storm during an in-ring promo talked about NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai. Storm wanted to become the first person to win the Women’s Dusty Cup, but Shirai took that from her (when Shirai attacked her in a match last week). Stormed vowed revenge, and she also is looking to become the champion.

Shirai came to the ring to confront Storm. Shirai said she will fight her anywhere, and Shirai said she did not like Storm. They started to brawl, and Shirai knocked Storm out of the ring. Mercedes Martinez in a sneak attack jumped Shirai. Martinez with a tree slam, but Shirai made a comeback with springboard missile dropkick.

The brawling continued, and Storm delivered several hip attacks on Shirai. She grapped the belt, and Storm posed with it while Shirai was down selling.

A vignette focused on Imperium.

Undisputed Era were interviewed backstage about their tournament tag match next week. Adam Cole & Roderick Strong were very confident they will defeat Tommaso Ciampa & Timothy Thatcher.

Bronson Reed defeated Isaiah “Swerve” Scott

Reed pinned Scott after a splash off the top.

Scott very aggressive at the start until he was tripped up on the apron. Reed flew through the ropes with a tope suicida before a commercial break. Impressive. Somehow, Scott was in control when the show returned from the break. Miraculous.

Reed soon swatted away Scott as he blocked Scott’s attempted flatliner. Reed with a Death Valley Driver, but Scott managed to kick out.

Scott cut off Reed when he climbed the turnbuckles. Scott fell backwards with an avalanche shoulder breaker on Reed. Scott with a 450 splash for a near fall.

Reed hulked up and dropped Scott with a headbutt. Superfly Splash off the top rope, and Reed covered Scott for the pinfall.

Tommaso Ciampa was cutting a promo when Timothy Thatcher pulled up a chair beside him. They vowed to defeat Undisputed Era next week in a Dusty Classic tournament match.

NXT Champion Finn Balor & Kyle O’Reilly defeated NXT Tag Team Champions Danny Burch & Oney Lorcan in a non-title match

O’Reilly submitted Burch to win the match. A brawl erupted after the match when Pete Dunne showed up.

Great grappling and mat wrestling from the outset. Back-and-forth action with quick tags by both teams. Burch & Lorcan took a powder as the show went to a picture-in-picture commerial break. The action didn’t let up, even during a smaller split-screen.

Burch & Lorcan began to get heat on O’Reilly. They looked to target his injured jaw. Balor came in to clean house, but he was soon trapped in a corner. Balor suffered a shoulder breaker done by Lorcan. The heel tag champs worked over the singles champion.

Balor was eventually able to create separation. Hot tag to O’Reilly, and he mowed down the heels with kicks. Burch tried to fight back. He went up to the middle rope, and Burch leapt off into a missile dropkick. O’Reilly caught him upon impact, and O’Reilly had him trapped in a heel hook. Burch tapped out.

Normally the champions losing a non-title match would set up a tag title bout. Maybe not here, as the focus was more on an upcoming singles title match.

Pete Dunne hit the ring to brawl with Balor. Lorcan & Burch helped to jump Balor. O’Reilly tried to make a save, but the numbers were too great to overcome. Dunne knocked down Balor with a cheap shot. Dunne also snapped Balor’s fingers.

Adam Cole & Roderick Strong ran in to make a save, and the heels fled the ring. Dunne, Lorcan & Burch had a staredown with Undisputed Era as the show went off the air.

Finn Balor to team with Kyle O’Reilly on WWE NXT next week

Next week’s NXT will feature NXT Champion Finn Balor teaming up with his most recent title challenger.

On tonight’s NXT, it was announced that Balor & Kyle O’Reilly will face NXT Tag Team Champions Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch in a non-title match next Wednesday.

Pete Dunne, Lorcan & Burch confronted Balor on NXT last week. Dunne said Balor told him to get in line for a title shot, but he’s not waiting anymore. Dunne, Lorcan & Burch attacked Balor until O’Reilly and then the rest of Undisputed Era ran out to make the save. Dunne, Lorcan & Burch also attacked O’Reilly at ringside during last week’s Adam Cole & Roderick Strong vs. Breezango main event. Balor tried to get involved and fight off Dunne, Lorcan & Burch, but he and O’Reilly were both laid out.

Balor went to NXT general manager William Regal on tonight’s show and said he wants to face Dunne, but he knows the game Dunne is playing. Balor asked Regal to let him start with Lorcan & Burch. Regal responded by telling Balor that he wasn’t going to let him face Lorcan & Burch on his own. Balor said he doesn’t have friends anymore — all he has is enemies. Regal reminded Balor of the old saying to keep your enemies closer.

Balor later went to Undisputed Era and asked O’Reilly if he’s in to team with him next week. O’Reilly agreed and the match was made official.

Balor retained his NXT Championship against O’Reilly at both TakeOver 31 in October and New Year’s Evil earlier this month.

Here’s what’s been announced for next week’s NXT:

  • Non-title match: NXT Champion Finn Balor & Kyle O’Reilly vs. NXT Tag Team Champions Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch
  • NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar defends against Curt Stallion
  • Men’s Dusty Classic quarterfinal match: MSK vs. Drake Maverick & Killian Dain
  • Men’s Dusty Classic quarterfinal match: The Grizzled Young Veterans vs. Kushida & Leon Ruff

WWE NXT New Year’s Evil live results: Finn Balor vs. Kyle O’Reilly

NXT kicks off 2021 tonight with a special episode.

A rematch of NXT’s 2020 Match of the Year headlines New Year’s Evil as Finn Balor defends the NXT Championship against Kyle O’Reilly tonight. At TakeOver 31 in October, Balor retained his title against O’Reilly but suffered a broken jaw in the process. Tonight will be Balor’s first match since undergoing surgery for that injury.

Karrion Kross vs. Damian Priest, Rhea Ripley vs. Raquel Gonzalez in a Last Woman Standing match, Santos Escobar vs. Gran Metalik for the NXT Cruiserweight Championship, and the return of Xia Li and Boa are also set for tonight.

Tommaso Ciampa and Timothy Thatcher were originally set to face off in a Fight Pit match on tonight’s show, but WWE has announced that the match has been postponed due to Thatcher suffering a minor injury. WWE said Thatcher is expected to return soon and the Fight Pit match will happen as soon as he heals.

New Year’s Evil is being hosted by Dexter Lumis and will be presented “with fewer interruptions and more action.” Our live coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

**********

The show opened with Dexter Lumis walking into the Capital Wrestling Center soundstage. He is the host, but he said nothing. He turned on the house lights on and off, and then he saw this lever. So he pulled the lever, and the arena was magically filled with lights and a crowd. Lumis was also known wearing a sports coat.

Karrion Kross (with Scarlett) defeated Damian Priest

Kross pinned Priest clean, but Kross fought almost to the very end. The match was commercial free, and they got plenty of time. This a PPV caliber match. Might even fit on a G1 card.

Priest sold his ribs during the match, and Kross worked over them over.

Kross blocked the Razor’s Edge and a chokeslam, but Priest came back with a springboard flip dive over the ropes to the floor. Priest delivered South of Heaven, but Krosss kicked out. Kross cut him off going to back to work on the ribs.

The fight went back outside the ring, and Priest was slammed on the ring steps. They squared off again. Priest told Kross he was still standing, so Kross gave him a Saito suplex. Then Kross with a knockout blow to the back of the head, and Kross covered Priest for a pinfall.

Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic begins next week on NXT.

The Undisputed Era team of Adam Cole & Roderick Strong were interviewed about the tournament. They face Breezango in a first round tag match. Cole put over their accomplishments, and said they fulfilled the golden prophecy. Cole went on to say they would do it again in 2021.

NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar (with Legado del Fantasma) defeated Gran Metalik (with Lince Dorado) to retain his title

Escobar pinned Metalik clean in a fun match. Metalik is so underrated. He was arguably the best flyer in the world when WWE hired him several years ago. He remains great.

Metalik got to show what a great high flyer he still is, and that led to an Asai moonsauklt for a near fall. There was a botched spot before a commercial break. Heat on Metalik through the break.

Escobar applied la tapatia as the show returned from commercial. Metalik made a comeback, and he fleww over the ropes with a tope con giro. Metalik with a springboard into a body press for a two count.

Metalik went for another springboard, and Escobar met him with a knee strike in mid-air. Escobar followed with a tope through the ropes. Metalik still kicked out at two.

Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde went to interfere, and Dorado flew in to make a save. Nevertheless, Metalik was tripped up. Escobar a moment later with the Phantom Driver, and he scored a pinfall.

A vignette hyped Mercedes Martinez. She cut a promo on NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai. Martinez attacked Shirai on a previous episode.

Xia Li defeated Katrina Cortez

Li pinned Cortez in an enhancement match. Li was a new entrance alongside Boa and the mysterious figure that trained them.

Cortez wore a lucha-style mask, but she used a full name. That is odd. Anyway, this was a showcase match for Li.

Li showcased her kicks, and she tried to look like a killer. Li with jumping knee strike, and then a high kick to score the pinfall.

Raquel Gonzalez defeated Rhea Ripley in a Last Women Standing match

They started with slugfest so it at least looked like a grudge match. Gonzalez talked some trash about them never being friends. They could have talked about that detail earlier than last week. They’ve only been feuding more months.

They brawled on the floor. Handcuffs came into play, and Ripled cuffed Gonzalez to the chainlink fence. Gonzalez ripped the chainlink apart, and she started hitting Ripley with the handcuffs.

Ripley tried to use the hammer used to the ring bell, but Gonzalez blocked her. Ripley was backdropped on the announce desk, and she took an ugly bump. The table broke, and Gonzalez piled chairs and other debris on top of Ripley so she could not beat the ten count. Nonetheless, Ripley crawled out from underneath the debris to break the count.

The match went through a commercial break. Snoop Dogg was in a beer commercial during the break, and he tonight was a featured attraction on that other wrestling show.

Ripley was booted off the stage after a commercial break. Gonzalez berated her, and Ripley fought back. They went through a glass door that shattered.

Ripley did a swanton bomb to put Gonzalez througha table. Suddenly, Dakota Kai ran in out of nowhere to attack Ripley with a kendo stick. Ripley fired up, and she beat up Kai. Ripley then shoved Kai into a locker, and she put a rolling case in front of the locker. Kai was trapped there.

Ripley applied her inverted scorpion while on the stage. Gonzalez countered to sent Ripley crashing into a video board on the stage. Ripley and Gonzalez seemingly tried to recreated the infamous bump with Shane McMahon and Kurt Angle, and Gonzalez suplexed Ripley into the video board.

They concluded with a stunt. Gonzalez chokeslammed Ripley through a gimmicked section of the stage. Gonzalez was able to break the count, but Ripley was unable to answer the ten count. Gonzalez was awarded the match. Ripley did a stretcher job.

The Way had a police excort the building in a motorcade.

NXT North Amercian Champion Johnny Gargano was celebrating the breaking of his curse. He was joined by his wife, Candice LeRae, and their cohorts, Austin Theory and Indi Hartwell.

LeRae gave Gargano a plaque. Theory and Hartwell has a present too. They unveiled a picture they supposedly drew of the stable. Gargano announced he and Theory would be a team in the Dusty Classic.

Shotzi Blackheart in her tank interrupted their celebration. Theory went out to confront, but he was shot in the groin by a the tank. Blackheart then went to attack LeRae and Hartwell. Blackheart cleared the ring, and Kushida came out to watch her back.

Dexter Lumis rang the bell, implying this is now an impromptu tag match. Teddy Long had far better announcements. At least he spoke. Lumis never said a word.

Shotzi Blackheart & Kushida defeated Candice LeRae & Johnny Gargano

Kushida pinned the North American Champion, so maybe we get a title match between the two soon.

LeRae & Gargano were in street clothes. Kushida was mostly in street clothes, but that is his gear now. Blackheart was dressed in her wrestling gear.

The match went through a commercial break, and LeRae got heat on Blackheart. Kushida in off a hot tag, and he ran wild.

They traded submission holds, and all four did some combo spots.

Kushida knocked Gargano off the apron, and he held the ropes open so Blackheart could do dive to the outside on LeRae.

Theory interfered by tripped up Kushida, amd Theory paid for it. Kushida went on to pin Gargano.

The bext TakeOver was announced for February 14th, which is also Valentine’s Day.

Also announced is the Women’s Dusty Classic that is coming soon.

NXT Champion Finn Balor defeated Kyle O’Reilly to retain his title

Balor submitted O’Reilly in a really great match. Maybe not better than their match a few months ago, but it was still good.

They started with grappling and mat work. They traded moves and holds. They built up to exchanging strikes. From there the pace began to quicken.

The intensity began to pick up. There was a double down after O’Reilly landed a PK, but he skidded outside the ring after hitting the kick.

O’Reilly worked an arm, and Balor worked a jaw and the face of O’Reilly.

O’Reilly with leglock submissions tried to tie up Balor, but Balor escaped by nailing O’Reilly in the jaw.

Balor with a reverse DDT, and he transitioned into applying a crossface on the injured face. O’Reilly escaped the hold.

O’Reilly was trying to rally, and Balor stoppe the momemtum with a sling blade. Balor followed with a double stomp and a shotgun dropkick. Balor went to the top rope for the Coup de Grace, but O’Reilly tripped him up.

Balor took a superplex and a brainbuster, and then O’Reilly caught him in an armbar. Balor managed to get a rope break. Balor was somehow cut open on his face, and he bled.

Balor hit O’Reilly with a kick to his liver. O’Reilly sold big, and then Balor trapped him in a cobra twist. O’Reilly soon tapped out.

Tag Team title street fight, Balor-O’Reilly segment set for WWE NXT

The NXT Tag Team titles will be on the line in a street fight this coming Wednesday night.

WWE has announced that NXT Tag Team Champions Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch will defend their titles against Killian Dain & Drake Maverick in a street fight on Wednesday’s NXT. Both teams were part of a four-way brawl on the most recent episode of NXT.

Lorcan & Burch accompanied Pete Dunne to the ring for his match against Kyle O’Reilly on NXT this week. O’Reilly was accompanied by Adam Cole & Roderick Strong. But before the bell rang, Dain & Maverick attacked Lorcan & Burch and a brawl broke out. Cole & Strong and Breezango also got involved and the four teams brawled to the back.

Pat McAfee, Dunne, Lorcan & Burch interrupted a match between Dain & Maverick and Ever-Rise on NXT last month. Dain ended up having a car door slammed into his head by Dunne. Dain lost to Dunne on NXT last week after being distracted by Lorcan & Burch attacking Maverick at ringside.

Lorcan & Burch have been NXT Tag Team Champions since aligning with McAfee and winning the titles from Breezango on the October 21 episode of NXT.

For this coming Wednesday’s show, WWE has also announced that NXT Champion Finn Balor and O’Reilly will “both take a special look back” at their title match from TakeOver 31. Balor retained against O’Reilly in that match but broke his jaw in two places. O’Reilly defeated Dunne on NXT this week to become the number one contender to the NXT Championship. O’Reilly will challenge Balor for the title at NXT New Year’s Evil on Wednesday, January 6.

Here’s the updated lineup for Wednesday’s NXT:

  • A Very Gargano Christmas
  • NXT Tag Team Champions Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch defend against Killian Dain & Drake Maverick in a street fight
  • NXT Champion Finn Balor and Kyle O’Reilly look back at their title match from TakeOver 31

WWE NXT video highlights: Kyle O’Reilly vs. Pete Dunne

A number one contender’s match on last night’s episode of NXT determined NXT Champion Finn Balor’s challenger for New Year’s Evil.

Kyle O’Reilly booked his spot in the New Year’s Evil title match by defeating Pete Dunne last night. Dunne snapped O’Reilly’s fingers and was going for the Bitter End on the apron near the end of the match, but O’Reilly reversed and suplexed Dunne to the floor. O’Reilly then threw Dunne back in the ring and hit a knee strike from the top rope to get the win.

Paul “Triple H” Levesque tweeted after O’Reilly vs. Dunne: “Unbelievable match. From start to finish @KORCombat and @PeteDunneYxB tore the house down. Ready to see #BalorOReilly2 for the #NXTTItle at #NXTNYE … THIS IS #WWENXT!!!! #WeAreNXT”

Balor vs. O’Reilly is a rematch of the NXT TakeOver 31 main event. Balor retained against O’Reilly in that match but broke his jaw in two places in the process.

The New Year’s Evil episode of NXT is taking place on Wednesday, January 6. It was announced last night that Dexter Lumis will be the host of the event. Another match was also confirmed for New Year’s Evil, with Karrion Kross set to face off with Damian Priest. Kross returned to the ring last night and demolished Desmond Troy. After the match, Kross looked into the camera and challenged Priest for New Year’s Evil.

Number one contender’s match set for WWE NXT

WWE has revealed how NXT Champion Finn Balor’s challenger for New Year’s Evil will be decided.

Kyle O’Reilly and Pete Dunne will face off in a number one contender’s match on NXT this coming Wednesday (December 16). The winner will challenge for Balor’s NXT Championship at New Year’s Evil on Wednesday, January 6.

New Year’s Evil is the first NXT episode of 2021. It’s airing live on the USA Network at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

Balor opened this week’s NXT episode with a promo before being interrupted by Dunne, O’Reilly, and Damian Priest. Balor announced that he’ll be defending his title at New Year’s Evil, but he said it was up to NXT general manager William Regal to decide who will be getting the title shot. Scarlett then also confronted Balor on the stage. Balor told her to tell Karrion Kross that whenever he’s ready, Balor’s ready.

Priest insulted Scarlett and Kross, leading to Kross making his return later on this week’s show and attacking Priest. WWE has announced that Kross will be returning to action on this coming Wednesday’s NXT

O’Reilly and his Undisputed Era stablemates (Adam Cole, Roderick Strong & Bobby Fish) defeated Team McAfee (Pat McAfee, Dunne, Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch) in the men’s WarGames match at TakeOver: WarGames this past Sunday. O’Reilly got the win by pinning Burch.

Dunne had defeated O’Reilly in a ladder match during the build to WarGames to get the entrance order advantage for Team McAfee. Dunne also defeated Killian Dain on NXT this week.

Balor hasn’t wrestled since undergoing surgery for a broken jaw after TakeOver 31 this October. Balor broke his jaw in two places while retaining the NXT Championship against O’Reilly at that TakeOver event.

Leon Ruff & Kushida vs. Johnny Gargano & Austin Theory is also set for this coming Wednesday’s NXT.

WWE NXT live results: TakeOver WarGames go-home show

The final build to TakeOver: WarGames takes place on tonight’s go-home edition of NXT.

The advantage for the women’s WarGames match will be on the line as Shotzi Blackheart faces Raquel Gonzalez in a ladder match tonight. It will be Team Shotzi vs. Team Candice in WarGames on Sunday.

Blackheart, Ember Moon, and Rhea Ripley have been confirmed for Team Shotzi. There’s still one member of the team left to be announced. Candice LeRae, Dakota Kai, Gonzalez & Toni Storm will be on Team Candice.

Sunday’s men’s WarGames match will be Undisputed Era (Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly, Roderick Strong & Bobby Fish) vs. Team McAfee (Pat McAfee, Pete Dunne, Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch). Dunne won the advantage for Team McAfee last week by defeating O’Reilly in a ladder match.

Leon Ruff defending his NXT North American Championship against Johnny Gargano and Damian Priest in a triple threat match is also set for TakeOver, along with Dexter Lumis vs. Cameron Grimes in a strap match. WWE will continue building to those matches tonight.

Plus, tonight’s show will feature Timothy Thatcher presenting a Thatch-as-Thatch-can session. Our live coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

**********

The show began with somber moment. The roster and others like Triple H and Shawn Michaels were gathered onstage to honor Pat Patterson. Then a tremendous music video with Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” highlighted the career of Pat Patterson. Great tribute, and the clips included Pat singing “My Way”, as he loved to do.

Angles before the show on social media set up the opening match. Johnny Gargano was also at ringside on guest commentary.

El Legado del Fantasma attacked Curt Stallion before the show. He was apparently supposed to team with Leon Ruff. So Priest laid out Joaquin Wilde in another skit before the show. That led to Priest replacing Stallion in teaming with Ruff, and they face El Legado del Fantasma.

The story is Priest wants to protect Ruff ahead of their title match this Sunday. Priest and Gargano challenge Rufff in a triple threat match at TakeOver.

NXT North American Champion Leon Ruff & Damian Priest defeated Santos Escobar & Raul Mendoza

Ruff pinned Mendoza, after a Reckoning by Priest during the finish.

Priest was running roughshod when he spotted someone in the crowd dressed in a Scream costume. Gargano remarked on commentary it was cool a fan dressed up the character. Priest was distracted by the Scream mask, and Escobar blindsided him with a tope. That sandwiched Priest into the chainlink barricade.

Though Priest was there to protect Ruff, Priest was ironically the one that got worked over by the heels. The rudos with heat on Priest through a commercial break. Priest fought back, but he was outnumbered. Ruff was down in the corner selling a knee strike from earlier in the match.

Ruff slowly crawled back on the apron, though he was stelling the strike from early on. Meanwhile, the rudo team targeted Priest’s leg. Priest came back with a big flatliner on Mendoza, and he tagged Ruff.

Ruff was running wild after a hot tag, yet he was unaware of a blind tag. Ruff was able to tag out. Priest back in like a house of fire mere moments after selling for minutes on end. Priest was going for his finisher when Ruff made a blind tag. Priest delivered The Reckoning, and Ruff followed with a frog splash. Ruff then covered Mendoza for a pinfall.

A mini-doc hyped War Games. Excellent stuff.

Team Candice was backstage for a promo. Candice LeRae vowed her team will win War Games, and Raquel Gonzalez said after night their team will have the advantage. Gonzalez says Blackheart will feel like she got run over by a tank.

Cameron Grimes defeated August Grey

Grimes pinned Grey after a Cave In in a showcase match. Grey got in some offense, but Grimes dominated the bout.

Grimes after the match cut a promo on Dexter Lumis ahead of their strap match this Sunday. Grimes then took a leather strap and used it in a demonstration. He hooked the strap to the arm of Grey, and Grimes whipped him with the strap.

All the while, Grimes is talking trash about Lumis having no place to run in their strap match. The joke being that Grimes has done all the running away in their ongoing feud. As Grimes was yapping in the direction of the hard camera, Lumis had replaced Grey. Lumis was now attached to the strap, and he stalked Grimes.

Grimes freaked out when he saw Lumis was behind him. Lumis pummeled him, and he whipped him with the strap. Grimes ran away fleeing the scene.

Jake Atlas defeated Tony Nese

Atlas pinned Nese after a cartwheel DDT. This was a good match, and Atlas dedicated the match to Pat Patterson. Yet it still seemed like filler. Atlas after the match at least got to cut a promo in a post-match interview.

Neither got an entrance, and the match was joined in progess like a house show bout on an old episode of Prime Time Wrestling. The show came back from a commercial break, and the bell sounded to start the match with no introductions.

During the match, there was a split screen like when the NWO would arrive to Nitro during an undercard match. Tonight it was Pat McAfee and company arriving to the building in a  yellow Hummer limousine.

Atlas in cutting a promo after the match said this was just the beginning. He will keep moving forward towards his goal of getting another shot at the NXT Cruiserweight Championship.

Pat McAfee is a heckuva talker

McAfee and his crew came to the ring for an in-ring promo. Continuing to prove he is a helluva talker, McAfee in a great speech build up his team in War Games. Before running down Undisputed Era, McAfee at the beginning of his promo paid tribute to Pat Patterson.

McAfee deserves some sort of award for being so great on interviews. He for sure should be inducted into the Matt Cleary Memorial House of Awesome on the B&V Show. McAfee is so dang good on the mic.

Xia Li and Boa in a skit were the subject of a ritualistic training session.

Grizzled Young Veterans were supposed to wrestle Ever-Rise (Chase Parker and Matt Martel). Imperium attacked Ever-Rise before their match could start. Imperium laid out Ever-Rise, and they stole their match. Imperium challenged Grizzled Young Veterans to a fight.

Grizzled Young Veterans (James Drake and Zack Gibson) vs. Imperium (Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner) went to a no-contest

Ever-Rise ran in and jumped both teams, and the match was thrown out.

The match itself was good, but it lacked defined protagonists. With two antagonist tag teams against each other, not sure who the viewers should want to win. Might be shades of grey, but at least Grizzled Young Veterans could have gotten some wins on television beforehand. We might have more reason to care more about them in this match. Then came a lame finish.

They went back-and-forth, leading to an Aichner dive to the outside. Ever-Rise ran down to ringside to attack both teams. The referee called for the bell, and he threw out the match.

Ever-Rise during a commercial break left the building like Earl Hebner after the Montreal Screwjob. Parker & Martel hurried out of the building, and they got into a waiting car.

“Ever-Rise rules,” they yelled while speeding away in their getaway car.

Tommaso Ciampa crashes Timothy Thatcher’s seminar.

Back in the ring for another session of Thatch-As-Thatch-Can hosted by instructor Timothy Thatcher. He says today’s lesson is on distractions. Some people could have used this advice in earlier matches on the show.

Thatcher turned out to address one his students, and he was shocked to see Tommaso Ciampa standing in the ring next to him. Thatcher told Ciampa to already had a student, who was also in the ring with them.

Ciampa said he was there to learn, he was there to teach. Thatcher reiterated he had no issue or problem with Ciampa. As Thatcher went to leave the ring, Ciampa called him a disappointment. Thatcher turned around to confront Ciampa.

Thatcher said he knew Ciampa was trying to goad him. He again said he wanted no trouble, and then Thatcher shot on Ciampa with a leg dive. Ciampa knocked him down with a forearm. Thatcher’s student in a sneak attack jumped Ciampa. That allowed Thatcher to attack Ciampa, and Thatcher choked out Ciampa. He put him to sleep and left him laid out. Thus concluded the lesson on distractions.

Thatcher in a backstage interview threatened Ciampa ahead of their match at TakeOver. That match is now official for TakeOver.

Announced for the TakeOver pre-show is Ariel Helwani. He joins Wade Barrett and Sam Roberts as co-hosts on the kickoff show panel.

Shotzi Blackheart defeated Raquel Gonzalez in a ladder match to win the War Games advantage

Blackheart won the match after a bunch of run-ins. Team Shotzi now has the advantage headed into War Games this Sunday.

The ladder quickly became involved. Gonzalez was getting the better of Blackheart, until Blacheart with a wrecking ball dropkick sent the ladder smashing into Gonzalez. Blackheart leapt off the apron into a flying crossbody. Gonzalez caught her, and then slammed her down on a ladder.

Blackheart rode with a sleeper hold, but she was posted. She moments later sidestepped a charge, and then Blackheart targeted a leg. Coffin drop off the barricade, and Blackheart crashed into Gonzalez.

They fought through a commercial break, and when the show returned they were having a tug-o-war with a ladder. Blackheart went for another crazy apron spot. It didn’t really work, and Gonzalez soon threw Balckheart into the ring steps, and Gonzalez picked up the ring steps. She then hit Blackheart with the steps.

Gonzalez climbed up one side of the ladder, and Blackheart climbed the other. They both took a bump off the ladder. After taking turns pulling each other off the ladder, it was soon tipped over.

A tilt-a-whirl headscissors by Blackheart led into a running senton. Blackheart jumped off the top rope with a meteora to the outside. She and Gonzalez crashed to the floor, and both were down selling when the heel War Games team ran down to ringside. They had been watching the match from a scaffold overlooking ringside. The babyface also ran down in tow shortly behind the heels.

Indi Hartwell, still wearing a neck brace, set up a ladder in middle of the ring. Blackheart rushed into the ring to hit Hartwell with a kick. Blackheart turned around into a lariat from Gonzalez. When Gonzalez went to climb the ladder, Io Shirai suddenly ran into the ring. Shirai jumped on the back of Gonzalez as she was climbing the ladder, and Shirai applied a sleeper.

Shirai did a moonsault off the top out of the ring onto everyone. Blackheart was left alone in the ring. She climbed a ladder to grab the briefase, thus winning the match. The babyface team with the advantage going into the women’s War Games match. That is not usually how War Games psychology works.

Maybe there will be an injury angle, or possibly even a turn of some sort. Otherwise, the babyface team was the advantage headed into War Games. TNA did something like that in the past. Hopefully NXT does it better.

Seems to go against the logic of almost every War Games match in history, but let’s see what happens on Sunday. What would Dusty do? Likewise, what would Pat do?

WWE NXT video highlights: WarGames advantage ladder match

Team McAfee earned the entrance order advantage in this year’s men’s WarGames match as Pete Dunne defeated Kyle O’Reilly on last night’s NXT.

Dunne defeated O’Reilly in a WarGames advantage ladder match in the main event of last night’s show. While Pat McAfee said he wasn’t going to be at NXT this week, a masked man interfered and helped Dunne win. Team McAfee (McAfee, Dunne, Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch) are facing Undisputed Era (Adam Cole, O’Reilly, Roderick Strong & Bobby Fish) in WarGames.

The build to TakeOver: WarGames also continued with Candice LeRae revealing her partners for the women’s WarGames match. It will be LeRae, Dakota Kai, Raquel Gonzalez & Toni Storm vs. Shotzi Blackheart and three partners. Storm turned heel last night and attacked Ember Moon.

Blackheart’s partners haven’t been announced, but it appears that they’re going to be Moon, NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai & Rhea Ripley. Team Candice laid out Shirai and attacked Ripley last night.

Plus, two more matches were confirmed for TakeOver: WarGames. Leon Ruff will defend his NXT North American Championship against Johnny Gargano and Damian Priest in a triple threat match. Dexter Lumis and Cameron Grimes will face off in a strap match.

Kyle O’Reilly will be going for singles gold as he challenges Finn Balor for the NXT Championship. O’Reilly became the number one contender to Balor’s title by defeating Cameron Grimes, Timothy Thatcher, Bronson Reed, and Kushida in a gauntlet eliminator match.

Candice LeRae and her husband Johnny Gargano are both set to challenge for titles tonight. The NXT Women’s Championship will be on the line as Io Shirai defends her title against LeRae, who won a number one contender’s battle royal to get the title shot. Damian Priest will also defend the NXT North American Championship against Gargano.

Isaiah “Swerve” Scott, who is the only person to pin Santos Escobar in WWE, will challenge for Escobar’s NXT Cruiserweight Championship tonight. Plus, Kushida will take on Velveteen Dream.

Tonight’s pre-show will begin at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time and will include an appearance by Rhea Ripley. TakeOver will then begin at 7 p.m. Eastern.

The show opened with a montage featuring tons of old footage and stock photos of Capitol Wrestling. The promo showed a quote from Vince McMahon in 1977 putting over the quality of the WWWF product at the time. Once the vignette finished, a logo appeared onscreen for the CWC, or “Capitol Wrestling Center,” or what they’ve decided to call the venue. The CWC logo looks almost identical to the Cruiserweight Classic logo.

Damian Priest defeated Johnny Gargano to retain the NXT North American title

Gargano ran at Priest as the bell rang but stopped short before attacking. He looked scared. Priest through a spinkick and chased Gargano out of the ring. Gargano snuck back in and put a few boots to Priest until the North American champ responded with a spinning roundhouse kick. Impressive athleticism from Priest off the bat.

Gargano used an armdrag to whip Priest from the apron onto the floor; Priest did a front-flip and bumped hard onto the floor. It looked great. Gargano landed a tope suicida next, then worked Priest over more inside the ring.

Priest launched a comeback when he planted Gargano with a big modified flatliner. He later went for a Razor’s Edge, but Gargano reversed on the way down into a sunset bomb. Priest stuck a big superman punch, then missed a spinkick, which allowed Gargano to lariat Priest to the floor. Priest then used his high spinkick to knock Gargano from the apron. He topped it off with a Razor’s Edge onto the apron, then rolled Gargano back into the ring for two. The crowd outside started making lots of noise right here.

They traded high spots and nearfalls toward the end of this. Lots of instant replays. Gargano used Sliced Bread and a running lariat to the back of Priest’s head for another two. Gargano taunted Priest and shot an imaginary arrow at him before Priest was able to again shift momentum and land a beautiful-looking sitout chokeslam for two.

When Priest climbed to the top for the finish, Gargano rolled to the floor. Priest decided to do a tope con hiro over the corner, but Gargano dragged security into the line of fire, which led to Priest taking out two guards instead of Gargano. Gargano landed a low blow in the commotion, then slapped on Garga-no-escape until Priest stuck his ankle on the bottom rope for a break.

Gargano tried knocking Priest from the apron onto the steel steps, similar to the bump Priest took on one of the last TakeOvers, but Priest reversed it and kicked Gargano in the face instead. He then spiked Gargano with The Reckoning for the pin. Priest retains his title.

KUSHIDA defeated Velveteen Dream via submission

KUSHIDA went after Dream before the bell and went to town. This was KUSHIDA’s first match on an NXT TakeOver according to the announce team. He dominated the first few minutes of this and looked great. Dream landed a cheap shot early and shifted the pace, moving the match back to the floor. He used a Randy Savage-esque axhandle from the top to the floor, then rolled KUSHIDA into the ring or a two-count. Dream dyed his hair gray tonight and it looks reminiscent of Don King’s. He did a bronco buster to KUSHIDA next, then screamed “Boo me now!”

KUSHIDA did a really good job at making this feel like a fight. We saw some of his flashy offense, but most of what he did here was simply brawl and shout. Awesome. He did the same move he used a few weeks ago to Dream, where he dragged Dream’s arm into the ringpost. He did it so hard that Dream’s glove flew off the first time.

Dream caught KUSHIDA with a sharp superkick to the face next, but KUSHIDA responded with an armbar. Dream slid to the floor and escaped, then used a power bomb for two, but KUSHIDA transitioned into the same armbar from here. Dream used strikes to break the pressure, then used the Dream Valley Driver and Purple Rainmaker from the top rope, but Dream couldn’t make it to KUSHIDA soon enough for a pin; his hesitation cost him the three here. Dream climbed to the top again, but KUSHIDA dashed to the top and launched dream with an avalanche Hoverboard Lock but still couldn’t get the tap. Dream went for another Dream Valley Driver and landed it, but this time KUSHIDA heldonto the hoverboard lock/kimura and tapped Dream immediately from here. KUSHIDA wins.

After the match, KUSHIDA didn’t let up on Dream and kept striking him. He laid in hard palm strikes and elbows, then kept locking on arm submissions. This KUSHIDA is so much more interesting than who we saw in NJPW. Really good match all around.

NXT aired a commercial for Halloween Havoc, which will air for the first time under the NXT banner on October 28. Check out the front page for more details on that.

Santos Escobar defeated Isaiah Scott to retain the NXT Cruiserweight title

All action from the get-go. Swerve landed a moonsault off the apron, then a corkscrew senton from the turnbuckle, then a Fosbury flop onto Escobar near the entrance. This was just a minute or two into the match, too. Swerevtastic, indeed.

Escobar was back in the match soon after and used a cool-looking tope through the ropes and crashed into the barricade and cage barrier set up at ringside.

Scott mounted his comeback after a few more minutes of punishment. After blocking a headbutt, Swerve unloaded, throwing body shots and a few kicks before he went on a string of high impact moves, including a rolling thunder flatliner.

Escobar returned the attack and did some sort of botched powerslam that was called a shoulderbreaker and got a two-count. Escobar’s stablemates ran down to the ring to distract Swerve but Ashante Adonis came out and made the save, landing a twisting asai moonsault from the bottom rope to the floor, taking the rest out of the match.

Escobar landed a Phantom Driver for two, but again Swerve picked up the momentum and ramped up the pace again. There were tons of false finishes towards the end of this in Swerve’s favor, the most noticeable after Swerve landed a 450 splash for two.

Before the finish, there was a spot where Escobar and Swerve fell onto the apron and Swerve hit his head against the ringpost. He sold like he was knocked silly. Escobar then landed a double-underhook GTS, slamming Swerve’s face into his knee, and scored the win. Isaiah Scott looked awesome here.

Io Shirai defeated Candace LeRae to retain the NXT Women’s championship

These two complement each other so well. From the bell, these two were exchanging everything from holds to aerial maneuvers, and all within the first couple minutes. Both did dives to the floor only minutes in. No hesitation from either of these two, either; they were working from the trenches all the way through this.

LeRae slowed the pace midway through and worked the champion over with a few submissions and hard stomps. Awesome heel work from LeRae, really mean and hard-hitting in the ring.

After a few minutes more of this, Shirai came back after LeRae missed a senton which allowed Shirai to keep LeRae down with a double-stomp.

LeRae later intercepted Shirai from the rope and power bombed her, but Shirai no-sold it and stuffed LeRae with meteora in the corner. Lots of back and forth from here. LeRae landed a Lionsault in the ring for two. Shirai locked on a LeBell Lock, but LeRae reversed it into the Garga-no-escape submission until Shirai broke the hold. LeRae broke the hold and accidentally took out the ref here. While he sold, Shirai landed an air raid crash, then went for a moonsault. LeRae blocked it with her knees, which Shirai ate. Shirai then bowled over the ref, who was still selling, and knocked him to the floor.

LeRae used a curbstomp and pinned Shirai next, but the ref was still selling on the floor. Johnny Gargano then ran out with a ref’s shirt and tried counting a fast three, but still Shirai kicked out. Gargano then rushed to the floor and grabbed the title belt. “It’s hers!” he shouted, pointing at his wife, LeRae. While he argued with the ref inside the ring–the ref had been revived by now–he slipped the championship belt to LeRae, who decked Shirai with the belt. LeRae pinned Shirai but, again, she kicked out. Moments later, Shirai was able to land a picture-perfect avalanche Spanish Fly, then landed moonsault for the win. Great stuff from both here, and match of the night so far.

Toni Storm appeared on the monitors next, where she said she’s back: “It always has, and always will be, Toni Time,” effectively calling Shirai out.

While Shirai was still in the ring, we saw another vignette on the screen. Someone drove to the Capitol Wrestling Center on a motorcycle, then came onto the entrance ramp. Former NXT Women’s champion, Ember Moon, made her return, looking slightly more Mad Max: Fury Road than before, with a new haircut and makeup. She didn’t say anything though she didn’t have to. Nice double surprise after this one.

We cut to a quick promo with Ashante Adonis talking about his “rich-ual” before the main event.

NXT Championship match: Finn Balor vs. Kyle O’Reilly

Compared with the rest of tonight’s card, this started off much slower. It was a deliberate choice and it instantly made this feel a little more special, a bit more of a “main event” feel from the beginning.

Balor controlled much of the earlier part of this match. He used a stiff basement dropkick on O’Reilly early. Later, Balor blasted him with chops in the corner until O’Reilly found an opening and unloaded strikes onto Balor, hard kicks and elbows, then used two rolling butterfly suplexes and a double-arm DDT to even the out odds.

Balor slowed things down again midway through this, once using a modified camel clutch and then a few hard kicks to O’Reilly’s body. O’Reilly as de facto babyface in this worked well.

O’Reilly bled from the mouth late in this. He took some very hard shots. Balor locked O’Reilly in a sharpshooter at one point and O’Reilly just barely made it to the ropes for a break.

After Balor landed a Pele kick, O’Reilly unleashed a desperation flurry of strikes and laid Balor out with a running lariat. He then locked out a realistic-looking guillotine choke, then eventually moved to an armlock, which Balor stomped his way out of. Really good tension from here.

Balor landed 1916 next, but O’Reilly kicked out after a two-count. When Balor went to the top for a diving double stomp, O’Reilly knocked him from the ropes and started using Dragon Screw legwhips on Balor, ripping his knees across the middle rope. Next, he transitioned from an achilles’ lock to a modified heel hook, then to another achilles’ lock. Very authentic grappling from O’Reilly here and it really added drama to this. Balor sold like his ACL or hamstrings were torn after he broke the hold.

Balor started acting like he couldn’t stand up, but he was faking, then took O’Reilly down with a quick takedown and a double stomp. After more quick back-and-forth, which saw O’Reilly use a brutal flying kneedrop, Balor was able to land one more double stomp, a huge one, and then put O’Reilly away with Coup de Grace from the top for the emphatic win.

NXT production caught a great shot of Balor after the match, his mouth now bloodier than O’Reilly’s. One of the best main event matches I’ve seen all year from any company. Awesome, hard-hitting pro wrestling, nothing more or less.

As Balor and O’Reilly celebrated in the ring together, Ridge Holland appeared in the crowd with Adam Cole draped over his shoulder. He stared at O’Reilly and the rest of Undisputed Era, who were ringside by now, then tossed Cole over the barrier onto the floor. Cole sold like he’d just been in a car wreck or something. Roderick Strong and Bobby Fish started yelling for people to come out and help Cole. Balor looked along from the ring, concerned, although he denied knowing what happened while Fish and Strong were yelling. The TakeOver broadcast ended here, the program fading to black before we found out anymore details.

Final thoughts:

This was one of the best TakeOver’s of the year so far, and felt closest to a “normal” TakeOver in 2020 than the others have in terms of quality and overall feel. The last two matches were the highlights, for sure, and it’d be wise if you’re a fan of the product to watch those two immediately if you haven’t done so already. Though that’s not to say the rest of the card was a bust. Everything was above-average on the undercard in some way, though KUSHIDA vs. Velveteen Dream was exceptional. “NEW-SHIDA” was really fun to watch, and I look forward to seeing more of what they do with his character going forward.
