WWE SmackDown live results: AJ Styles vs. James Ellsworth

Date: December 13, 2016
Location: Verizon Center in Washington, DC

The Big Takeaway —

Dolph Ziggler will face AJ Styles in two weeks on SmackDown in Chicago for world title. He won a fatal fourway elimination match over Dean Ambrose, Luke Harper and The Miz to earn the shot after Miz cost Ambrose the match. James Ellsworth did not get involved and did not face AJ Styles for the title. Yes, they postponed it again. Ellsworth was sent home by Daniel Bryan for apparently having the flu.

Becky Lynch defeated Alexa Bliss in a women’s title match, but Bliss escaped with her title after feigning a knee injury and losing via countout. Also, the Hype Bros earned a tag title match against the Wyatt Family.

Oh, and John Cena returns in two weeks.

Show Recap —

The show started with a cold open of Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon awkwardly watching a replay of Miz retaining the IC Title last week thanks to James Ellsworth. Ellsworth was there too but he appears to have a cold. He’s fake coughing and sneezing into his shirt. Bryan told Ellsworth to go home. He left, but not before sneezing on them. Bryan and Shane agreed they needed a new number one contender.

MizTV with AJ Styles

Miz announced that the WWE title match wasn’t happening tonight and there was no crowd reaction. Styles said Ellsworth came down with “chinfluenza.” Miz asked how Styles can sleep at night knowing he has to defend his title against Ellsworth one day. They both broke down in laughter and Miz complimented Styles’ hair.

After Miz asked him what’s next, Styles said he’s already beaten John Cena and Dean Ambrose, and will beat Ellsworth soon. He asked Miz who was on his level and Miz said himself. Miz said he made the IC title legendary, he beat Ambrose last week and he’s above Styles’ level. Styles stood up and they got face to face, but Ambrose interrupted.

Ambrose jumped in the ring as Styles and Miz fled to the apron. Dolph Ziggler came out next and called them both cheaters. Ziggler said if Miz can’t hide behind Maryse’s skirt, he could hide behind Styles’. Miz was insulted by this dumb comment and got in the ring. He brawled with Ziggler and hit a skull crushing finale, then Ambrose laid Miz out with a Dirty Deeds. As Styles left, Ambrose nailed Ziggler with a Dirty Deeds too. After all that, the Wyatt video went off and Luke Harper appeared to clothesline Ambrose.

Backstage, Styles is pissed and told Bryan and Shane that he wants protection. Bryan suggested he should try a pharmacy. Shane informed Styles that Ambrose, Ziggler, Miz and Harper will have a fatal fourway number one contender’s match, and the winner will face Styles on December 27.

Carmella defeated Natalya

Natalya addressed Nikki Bella (who was on commentary) before the match. She claimed she wasn’t the one who attacked Nikki and called Carmella a liar. She didn’t want to do this in public but Nikki won’t return her calls. They went to commercial a minute into the match. The match spilled to the outside where Carmella was about to attack Nikki, but Natalya pushed her out of the way. They returned to the ring and Carmella caught Natalya with a rollup for the win.

They aired a promo for the Undertaker. It was for the Network.

John Cena returns to SmackDown in two weeks (December 27 in Chicago).

Backstage, Gabriel Iglesias (a comedian) talked with Apollo Crews. Maryse and Miz showed up and Maryse told them to be quiet. Iglesias insulted Miz’s suit and figured he must’ve gotten it from Uranus. Miz and Maryse fake-laughed at his stupid joke. Miz was about to call him a fluffy piece of shit, but Crews stopped him. Miz said he didn’t have time for “Creed” or the other guy and they left.

The Hype Bros won a #1 Contender’s Tag Team Battle Royal

After they seemingly broke up on Talking Smack last week, Heath Slater & Rhyno are together in this match. Mauro Ranallo did mention that they might not be on the same page. The Vaudevillains, Ascension, Breezango, American Alpha and Hype Bros are the other teams. Ranallo explained that both members of each team need to be eliminated.

Mojo Rawley eliminated Simon Gotch immediately.  Chad Gable eliminated Viktor. Konnor eliminated Gable. Slater eliminated Rhyno by accident. Commercial break. Jason Jordan eliminated Aiden English. Slater eliminated Fandango.

Jordan got a chance to shine, hitting shoulder tackles and suplexes. The crowd was into him, but he was backdropped out of the ring by Konnor and the crowd booed. Slater made a comeback of his own, but was also eliminated by Konnor. Konner eliminated Breeze and was about to toss Ryder, but Ryder countered and used a leg scissors to eliminate Konnor. The Hype Bros win and get to face the Wyatts. Rawley sprinted back down to celebrate with Ryder.

A promo aired for Baron Corbin featuring clips of a wolf tearing apart its prey and Corbin calming riding his motorcycle down a suburban street.

Alexa Bliss came out for a match with Deonna Purrazzo. Bliss grabbed the mic from the ring announcer before Purrazzo could be introduced. Bliss didn’t want to do the match. She said she doesn’t do charity cases and called Purrazzo, “Jane Ellsworth.” Bliss decked Purrazzo and sent her out of the ring. This brought out Becky Lynch.

Lynch figured Bliss didn’t want to compete last week because she wasn’t in her wrestling gear, but now she is and so is Becky. She challenged Bliss to a title match right now. Bliss said sure, but not tonight. Before she could walk out, Shane McMahon came out and announced the title match would be happening next.

Women’s Championship: Becky Lynch defeated Alexa Bliss via countout

Lynch won in 5 minutes via countout, so Bliss is still champion. They had a back and forth match leading to Bliss bailing from the ring and “tweaking” her knee. The crowd picked up on this immediately and started booing. Bliss limped around the ring as the referee counted her out. Not sure why Lynch never went after her. She did attack Bliss after the match. The brawl revealed that Bliss’ knee is just fine, and she managed to escape. Shane McMahon, who intervened earlier, didn’t bother after this.

They aired promos for Cena’s return and Randy Orton on “Shooter.”

#1 Contender’s Fatal Fourway Elimination Match: Dolph Ziggler defeated Dean Ambrose, The Miz and Luke Harper

Harper immediately went after Ambrose and Ziggler. He nailed Ambrose with a suicide dive as Miz looked on terrified. Miz then applauded Harper and tried to get on his side, but Harper smacked him and hit a Michinoku driver for two. After Ranallo asked him about the match, Styles said he wasn’t listening to Ranallo, he was trying to scout.

Miz used running dropkicks on Ziggler but Ambrose cut him off with a clothesline. Ambrose tried a suicide dive on Harper, but Harper blocked it and killed him with a big boot. As Harper had control, Ambrose tried to catch him with a Dirty Deeds, but Ziggler superkicked Ambrose, Harper clotheslined Ziggler, and Ambrose clotheslined Harper.

Miz was the first eliminated (it’s an elimination match) 11-12 minutes into the match after Ambrose caught him in a small package. Commercial break.

Ziggler hit Harper with a Zig Zag and Ambrose nailed Ziggler with a flying elbow drop for a nearfall. Styles called Otunga a moron. Harper hit Ambrose with a spinning side slam and the referee appeared to count three, but that wasn’t meant to be the finish, so Ambrose was not eliminated. The crowd booed the screw up.

Harper was finally eliminated after a superkick from Ziggler and a Dirty Deeds by Ambrose.

Ziggler nailed an facebuster off the top, but Ambrose caught him in a small package for a nearfall. After a double clothesline spot, Miz reappeared at ringside. Ambrose hit him with a suicide dive and Ziggler followed with a superkick.

Ambrose tossed Ziggler into the ringpost and then back in the ring, but Miz held Ambrose from entering the ring. Ambrose launched Miz into the barricade and jumped back in the ring, but Ziggler nailed a superkick and picked up the pinfall win. Dolph Ziggler will face AJ Styles for the WWE World Title in two weeks.

After the match, they cut to Rich Swann who plugged his match against TJ Perkins on 205 Live.

Final Thoughts —

The main event was pretty good but the rest of the show was not.

AJ Styles vs. James Ellsworth title match, tag team battle royal announced for SmackDown

A battle royal and a WWE title match are both advertised for tonight’s live SmackDown show in Washington, DC.

WWE Champion A.J. Styles vs. James Ellsworth was originally set to headline last week’s show, but got pushed back one week due to Styles suffering a right ankle injury.

The battle royal will be a tag team style affair, meaning if one person is eliminated, the team is eliminated. It will be all the regular Smackdown teams except the champion Wyatt Family as the winners will become the top contenders, meaning Jason Jordan & Chad Gable would be favored.

The teams announced are Heath Slater & Rhyno, American Alpha, the Hype Bros, Breezango, The Ascension, Usos and Vaudevillains. For the Usos, tonight would mark their first return to action since Jey’s ankle injury.

Comedian Gabriel Iglesias is also scheduled for an appearance on tonight’s show.

WWE will be taping Tribute to the Troops as well, set to air Wednesday night on USA.

AJ Styles suffers a minor ankle injury at WWE TLC

A.J. Styles suffered what WWE officials called a minor ankle injury last night in his TLC main event with Dean Ambrose in Dallas, TX.

Styles did get medical attention in the ring after the show was over. He was also being attended to after the match.

Styles retained his WWE title over Ambrose due to interference from James Ellsworth, which was to set up a Styles vs. Ellsworth title match on tomorrow night’s SmackDown tapings in Houston. Ellsworth’s interference was framed as a strategic decision because he thinks he has Styles’ number after getting three fluke wins over him.

It is not clear at this point how Styles’ injury will play into the match, or if he will be able to wrestle, or be limited in the match since it would likely have been more of an angle than a serious main event style match, or his status as far as house shows since he’s the key star of the brand right now.

James Ellsworth to challenge for the WWE World title on Tuesday

James Ellsworth will be getting his shot at the WWE World Championship on Tuesday night.

After Ellsworth interfered in Sunday’s TLC main event between AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose to help give Styles the win, it was announced on Talking Smack that Ellsworth would challenge Styles for the title on this week’s SmackDown.

Ellsworth joined Renee Young and Daniel Bryan on the post-TLC edition of Talking Smack to explain why he seemed to turn on his storyline best friend. Ellsworth called the decision a strategic one, citing that he’s already beaten Styles three times and thinks he has his number. He said he’d help make it up to Ambrose by giving him the first shot at the title after he wins.

As part of the ongoing feud between Styles and Ambrose, Ellsworth got three wins over Styles on SmackDown in recent weeks. He beat the WWE World Champion twice in October, once with Ambrose’s assistance as the special guest referee and once by disqualification. And Ambrose helped him beat Styles in a ladder match two weeks ago to earn the title shot.

Video of the segment from Talking Smack is available to watch below:

– IC Champion Dolph Ziggler def. The Miz in a street fight to retain

– WWE Smackdown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch def. Alexa Bliss

Alexa came out to a mild response, mainly boos, but a few cheers. Becky got a fantastic pop and the crowd sang her theme at the top of her voice until the match started when they sat silently, only responding to pinfalls.

Alexa dominated the match, but Becky locked in a Disarmher and Alexa tapped out in about nine minutes.

– WWE Champion AJ Styles def. Dean Ambrose

After both guys made their entrances, Greg Hamilton announced that James Ellsworth was the special guest time keeper to a massive pop, AJ grabbed a mic and said that he refused to wrestle if Ellsworth was ringside and began walking the ramp before Daniel Bryan came out to the loudest pop of the night and announced that AJ had signed a contract saying he’ll defend the title and he would be stripped of it if he didn’t.

The match went about 20 minutes while most parents left during the match with their children. The finish was AJ ripping the turnbuckle pad off. Later in the match, he sent Ambrose to the corner who hit his face on the exposed metal, and AJ rolled him up. Post-match, AJ went to attack Ambrose with the chair before Ellsworth stepped in the way. Ambrose laid AJ out with a Dirty Deeds sending the fans home happy.

WWE SmackDown live results: The build to Survivor Series continues

Date: November 1, 2016
Location: Prudential Center in Newark, NJ

The Big Takeaway —

There was a show-long storyline involving James Ellsworth wanting to be at ringside for tonight’s main event, but Dean Ambrose and Daniel Bryan both refused. Ellsworth ended up at ringside anyway and inadvertently helped Ambrose defeat Styles, allowing Ambrose to become number one contender for the WWE Championship. On Talking Smack, it was announced this title match will happen on December 4 in Dallas at TLC in a TLC Match.

Before that, Ambrose and Styles will represent Team SmackDown at Survivor Series, along with Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt and Baron Corbin. The women’s team will be Nikki Bella, Becky Lynch, Alexa Bliss, Carmella and Naomi. Natalya will be their coach. The Usos and American Alpha joined the SmackDown tag-team.

Also for Survivor Series, Dolph Ziggler issued an open challenge to anyone on Raw for his IC Title. Finally, Randy Orton still appears on the same side as the Wyatts. Or Bray Wyatt, at least.

Show Recap —

James Ellsworth came out to a big reaction. He thanked Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan for letting him come out and say goodbye. The crowd screamed and chanted “no.” Ellsworth hasn’t been able to eat or sleep, and won’t be able to move on until he apologizes to Dean Ambrose. He called out Ambrose.

Ambrose came out and put his hand on Ellsworth, which made Ellsworth very uncomfortable. Ambrose said he had a lot of time to think about ripping off his head, but when he sees Ellsworth’s face, he can’t stay mad and forgave it. Ellsworth said he can’t forgive himself after Ambrose helped him beat AJ Styles twice.

Ellsworth said he made a mistake, but Ambrose said it was alright. Ambrose put his hand on Ellsworth and warned him not to get in his way ever again. Ellsworth pleaded with Ambrose, looked him in the eyes and said “I’m sorry.” Ambrose appeared bewildered and they were interrupted by AJ Styles.

Styles wondered why Ellsworth would ever apologized as loud “AJ Styles” chants started. He told the crowd to shut up. Styles told Ellsworth that Ambrose has been using him, and Styles respects him. He claimed he was going to make their title match quick and easy, but Ambrose is the one who pushed him.

Styles said Ellsworth should be thanking him, not Ambrose. It’s because of him people are buying his t-shirts and wanted a cut of his cheques. Ambrose got in Styles’ face. Ellsworth tried to separate them, but Styles pushed Ellsworth into Ambrose and kicked Ambrose in the head. Styles tossed Ellsworth out of the ring and nailed Ambrose with a Phenomenal forearm.

They announced Randy Orton vs. Kane in a no disqualification match up next.

Daniel Bryan confronted Ellsworth and Ambrose backstage, telling them they need to calm down. Ellsworth apologized again, but Ambrose didn’t care. Bryan told Ambrose he would get another shot at Styles tonight and would become number one contender if he won. However, this was his last chance. Bryan told Ellsworth he can stay backstage and watch, but he’s not allowed at ringside. Ellsworth understood.

No Disqualification Match: Randy Orton defeated Kane

They brawled for a bit with Kane getting the upperhand thanks to a chair, but the lights went out and the Wyatts appeared. Kane fought them off momentarily, but when attempted to chokeslam Luke Harper, Orton jumped in and hit an RKO for the win. Match was about 2 minutes.

Afterwards, Orton stared down Harper. Kane got up, so Harper nailed a discus clothesline. Harper was about to attack Kane again, but Orton pushed Kane into Bray who hit Sister Abigail. Orton did his usual pose on the ropes as Bray yelled, “follow the buzzards.”

A promo for Baron Corbin aired. Basically, he doesn’t care about anyone. This promo included a shot of him riding his motorcycle down a suburban street.

Alexa Bliss & Carmella defeated Becky Lynch & Nikki Bella

Only Lynch got a full entrance and they went to commercial a minute into the match. Immediately after a break, Lynch made a hot tag and hit forearms, kicks and an exploder to Carmella. Bliss broke up the cover and tossed Lynch into Nikki, knocking Nikki out of the ring. (Nikki never appeared again after this.)

Lynch hit a reverse DDT on Bliss (which they completely mistimed), but Carmella distracted the referee. Lynch knocked Carmella off the apron, but Bliss racked her in the eyes and hit a DDT for the win. The match was about 5-6 minutes and a lot of it was during commercial.

Afterwards, Dasha Fuentes tried to interview the winning team, but they kicked her out of the ring. Bliss interviewed Carmella and asked her who she was looking forward to humiliating at Survivor Series. Carmella ran down Bayley and Charlotte and told Nikki Bella to let her run the team. Carmella asked Bliss about her title match next week. Bliss called herself the wicked witch of SmackDown and would win the title next week in Glasgow.

Backstage, Bryan and Shane let Naomi know she would be the fifth member of Team Smackdown. The rest of the team would be Lynch, Nikki, Carmella and Bliss. Natalya jumped in and said they need someone on the team who they all get along with, to which Bryan responded, “You?!” Bryan begrudgingly made Natalya the coach of Team SmackDown.

Survivor Series Qualifying Match: American Alpha defeated The Spirit Squad

Jordan and Gable won in two minutes with Grand Amplitude. They join Heath Slater & Rhyno and the Hype Bros on Team SmackDown.

The SmackDown announcers plugged Brock Lesnar vs. Goldberg for Survivor Series. They usually have a neutral voiceover person plug the other brand’s stuff, but they didn’t do that this time.

MizTV with Daniel Bryan

Miz introduced Bryan who came out to huge “Daniel Bryan” chants. Miz asked the crowd if he can start his show and they yelled “No.” Miz knocked Talking Smack, so Bryan said he could cancel MizTV, and the crowd chanted “Yes.” Miz threatened Bryan and told him to move on to Survivor Series.

Bryan said he had an announcement and plugged the tag team match, which he figured Miz would be interested in. Miz wasn’t, and asked about the men’s (singles) team. Bryan announced their team as Randy Orton, Baron Corbin, Bray Wyatt, Dean Ambrose and WWE Champion AJ Styles.

Miz was displeased. He asked a series of questions, including “was I even considered?” and Bryan said “nope.” Miz called Bryan petty and jealous. Bryan said they actually did consider him, but they need superstars who aren’t afraid to fight. Last week, Miz proved he was afraid to fight when he turned down an IC Title rematch against Dolph Ziggler.

Miz said SmackDown would get obliterated by Raw and claimed Bryan was the one who was scared to fight. He placed Maryse between himself and Bryan and told him that he wasn’t good at his job or anything else anymore. Miz told Bryan to go back to moping around John Cena’s house on Total Bellas.

Bryan was pissed and tossed a chair aside. Miz jumped out of the ring. Bryan basically called him a bad wrestler and told him to keep hiding behind the announce desk. Bryan then called out Ziggler who was defending his title tonight in an open challenge.

They announced Ambrose and American Alpha would be on Talking Smack with Bryan and Renee Young.

Intercontinental Championship: Dolph Ziggler defeated Curt Hawkins

Hawkins did a promo on his way to the ring saying he would turn heads. Hawkins had his back turned when the bell rang, so Ziggler immediately hit a superkick and won in seconds.

Afterwards, Renee interviewed Ziggler, who issued an open challenge to anyone on Raw for the Intercontinental championship at Survivor Series. Miz was pissed.

Backstage, Dasha Fuentes asked Ambrose about tonight. She also asked about James Ellsworth, but got flustered, and said “James Ellis” instead. She’ll never hear the end of that. What’s worse, Ellsworth was standing right there (off camera).

Ambrose emphasized James “Ellsworth” in his promo, when Ellsworth appeared behind him. He asked Ambrose if there was any way he could come to ringside tonight. You could hear the crowd in the background yell “no” before Ambrose could even say anything, which was funny. Ellsworth begged him, but Ambrose said no.

There was a Wyatt segment backstage with Randy Orton. Orton said he was born with the devil whispering in his ear and the darkness has shown him the light. He called Bray a God and Orton’s eyes literally lit up. Bray chuckled.

Survivor Series Qualifying Match: The Usos defeated The Headbangers

Usos won in two minutes after an Uso got the pin holding a Headbanger’s skirt. Usos join Team SmackDown. This was the fourth match tonight that was 3 minutes or less, and the women’s match wasn’t much longer.

Backstage, Fuentes caught up to Styles and asked him about tonight. Styles was annoyed and said, “Why can’t I just make it to the ring without someone asking me a dumb question?” He said he would win and Ellsworth would end up back in the bargain bin.

Elsewhere, Ambrose led Ellsworth–still in his gear–out of the building. Ambrose told a flummoxed Ellsworth to grab an Uber.

Non-Title: Dean Ambrose defeated WWE World Champion AJ Styles

The match started during commercial. When they came back, Ambrose hit a suicide drive, tossed him over the announce table and into the barricade. None of that was a DQ. Somebody got in JBL’s headset and he let us know that Ambrose better not get disqualified. Back in the ring, Ambrose used a couple of rollups but Styles kicked out. Ambrose applied a cloverleaf, but Styles got to the rope.

Ambrose followed with a double underhook superplex for two. Styles applied the calf crusher but Ambrose quickly got to the rope. Ambrose then crotched Styles on the barricade, also not a DQ, and nailed a running forearm.

Styles had control during a break after Ambrose appeared to hurt his knee, but after the break, Ambrose dropkicked Styles out of the ring and hit a flying elbow drop. He followed with running forearms and a clotheslines in the ring. Styles suplexed Ambrose leg-first into the ropes, but Ambrose came back with a facebuster for a near fall.

After both guys went down on a double-clothesline spot, the crowd chanted “Ellsworth,” who ran out through the crowd. This distracted Ambrose and Styles hit a Pele kick for a near fall. Security ran out and chased Ellsworth back through the crowd.

They traded counters leading to Styles applying the calf crusher, but Ambrose got a rope break. Ellsworth, still running from security, ended up back at ringside. Security caught him and were about to carry him out, but Styles decked him over the announce table. (Styles violently attacking Ellsworth is always great.)

Styles went for the Phenomenal forearm, but Ambrose countered into a Dirty Deeds for the win. Big crowd pop for this.

Security dragged away a lifeless Ellsworth, who had a sly smile on his face. Ambrose picked him up for a moment, then dropped him again before security carried him out once and for all.

Final Thoughts —

As with the last few weeks, this wasn’t much of a show before the main event. Ambrose and Styles managed to have yet another good match and the show-long story with James Ellsworth was entertaining. The rest of the show was very missable, with all but one of the other matches going three minutes or less.

James Ellsworth to challenge AJ Styles for his title on SmackDown next week

James Ellsworth will be getting a shot at the WWE World Championship.

SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan announced on Tuesday night’s edition of Talking Smack that Ellsworth would challenge AJ Styles for his title on next week’s edition of SmackDown.

Ellsworth made his return to WWE television on Tuesday night, and was victorious in a non-title match against Styles. Dean Ambrose, the special guest referee for the match, helped Ellsworth get the win by favoring him all match and hitting Dirty Deeds on Styles to set up the finish.

There was a scary moment during the match when Ellsworth tucked his head on a Styles Clash, but he appeared to avoid injury.

It seems likely that the match was booked to further the ongoing feud between Styles and Ambrose.

The appearance was the third time that Ellsworth has appeared on WWE TV this year. Ellsworth, an independent wrestler previously known as Jimmy Dream, received significant attention after he was utilized in a squash against Braun Strowman on Raw in July. He later appeared on SmackDown before returning to the show on Tuesday night.

Next week’s show will also see Alexa Bliss face Naomi, and Baron Corbin will take on Jack Swagger.

Enhancement Era: The return of the WWE jobber

They’re here!

When I read a few weeks ago that WWE was going to bring back enhancement talent to television, I was skeptical. Lo and behold, on the first post-draft Raw, they utilized not one, but two “local athletes”.

Enhancement talent, local athletes, local competitors, jobbers, jibbers, oners and doners, dregs of society, whatever you want to call them — they really are back…and I could not be more excited!

Oh, how I’ve longed for the return of the jobber. There’s something incredibly fun about watching one of WWE’s regular superstars come out and eviscerate some beer-bellied bozo, or in Nia Jax’s case, a totally normal looking female wrestler.

But as much as I love them, is using enhancement talent on television really such a great idea? I don’t know about you, but that to me sounds like a question best answered with a good ol’ pros and cons list — my favorite of all the lists.

The Pros —

As mentioned, I love enhancement talent, so that’s clearly a pro. I mean, just take a look at young James Ellsworth here, last seen getting mauled by Braun Strowman.

Photo: WWE.com

Who wouldn’t want to see a face like this on their TV screen every week? That’s the thing I love about it. Every week, it’s some new schlub in his best “Trust me, I’m a real wrestler” get-up looking completely out of place. Giving them a few seconds to say their piece like they did with Ellsworth on Raw is just the icing on the cake.

Perhaps even more important than simply my love of jobbers is the fact enhancement talent can help to reduce the dreaded 50/50 booking that’s been plaguing WWE television for years.

If the aforementioned Jax had debuted a few weeks ago and was booked in a squash match like she was on Raw, her opponent would have been an established WWE superstar like Naomi or Summer Rae who’s not currently doing anything special. Jax, of course, would have squashed her opponent and (hopefully) looked good doing it, but it would have been at the expense of someone who probably still has hopes of being a big deal someday. As we know, a one-sided loss to Nia is not going to do that person any favors in the long run.

Utilizing enhancement talent means fewer losses for established stars. Believe it or not, wins and losses actually do matter. Fewer losses by established stars will help improve that 50/50 ratio to at least 40/60, and maybe even 38/62.

Photo: WWE.com

Enhancement talent can also reduce overexposure of some superstars. Back to the Nia vs. Naomi example, would it benefit Naomi more to appear on Raw only to lose in emphatic fashion to a debuting Nia, or to be held off TV until creative has something for her?

I don’t believe the expression “any news is good news” or “any publicity is good publicity” applies to the superstars of WWE. Fans can, and do, get sick of seeing certain people week in and week out — especially if that person is only really being used to put over other talent.

The jobber not only makes WWE superstars look good, but can also stop them from falling into irrelevancy.

The argument to that point is that the enhancement talent are taking up “precious” TV time that could be going to someone under contract to WWE. But, I think my previous point negates this argument.

Speaking of precious time, Raw is still a three-hour show. That’s a lot of time to fill every week, and simply relying on longer matches isn’t going to cut it. Wrestling shows need variety: long matches, short matches, squashes, interviews, Pokemons, video packages, etc.

Using local competitors for quick squashes adds to the match variety of the show and fills in a few more minutes. Add a brief (intentionally or unintentionally) hilarious pre-match interview and that’s another portion of time filled, plus it’s a bit of fun for the audience.

If nothing else, local jobbers are a meme and GIF goldmine. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to get enough James Ellsworth in my life. Drink it in!

Photo: WWE.com

The Cons —

It wouldn’t be a pros and cons list without the cons. Otherwise, it’s merely a list of pros, which is only suitable when discussing how great Danshoku Dino is. One problem of using enhancement talent is that it may backfire.

For example, the purpose of the jobber in a squash match is to make the WWE superstar look good and help bayou Viking man or whatever Braun Strowman is get over as a monster.

But there’s always a chance that “Average” Joe Jobber or “Average” Jolene Jobber (best wrestling names ever?) might actually be a super charismatic guy and end up winning over the crowd. Meanwhile, the pushed WWE superstar looks like a complete idiot for getting shown up on TV by a nobody.

The flipside is that WWE could just roll with it, and we get a neat little underdog storyline out of it. It might even have a fairytale ending with the local talent getting a contract.

However, an even worse case scenario is the local jobber goes into business for him or herself. They might go off-script and do something silly like kick out of the planned finish or shoot on their opponent on live TV.

This would, of course, get them blacklisted from WWE and probably murdered backstage, but I bet they would make a few dollars on the indie circuit out of it.

One final, potentially major, issue of using local, non-contracted performers on WWE television is that they’re unknowns. I don’t mean unknown as in not famous. I mean they’re unknown as in we, and I assume WWE, don’t know a whole lot about them.

Before putting someone on television, I’m sure WWE does some kind of background check, but I doubt it’s as stringent as one they’d do for someone they’re looking to hire full-time. I mean it’s just for one appearance, how careful do they need to be? Actually, quite careful as evidenced by past potential signees missing out on jobs because of four-year old comments made on social media. As we know, information gets out.

On the surface, local jobber X may seem on the up and up, but after a television appearance, people are going to go digging. Who knows what they might find?

And it’s not just secrets buried in the past that WWE needs to be worried about. This is a big “what if” and an absolutely worst case scenario, but what if the day after appearing on Raw, James Ellsworth goes out and commits some kind of horrendous act?

When his face appears on the news, you just know the job title next to his name is gong to say “WWE wrestler.” Accurate or not, it would, for that one appearance, be technically true. That kind of press could be devastating for a global company like WWE. And while the chances of something horrific like that actually happening must be very small, it’s still a possibility.

Of course, you could say there’s a chance anyone associated with the WWE could potentially commit such an act and thus bring negative publicity to the company, whether they be full-timers, on-camera or off-camera employees. That is true, but those employees would have gone through a much more strict hiring process than say “Pretty” Pete Powerpunch from Punxsutawney, PA, who was used for a 30-second squash on SmackDown.

Having said all that, I’m sure James Ellsworth is a chill dude. I mean, look at this guy:

So, there we have it with some pretty solid arguments for both sides, if I do say so myself. Here’s that final list of pros and cons of using jobbers on WWE television:

Pros

  • Zach loves jobbers
  • Reduces 50/50 booking ratio
  • Reduces overexposure of WWE Superstars
  • Good way to fill time
  • Glorious memes/GIFs
  • Unintentionally getting over/fun underdog story

Cons

  • Stealing precious TV time from contracted talent
  • Unintentionally getting over
  • Intentionally getting over/go into business for themselves
  • Dubious backgrounds/lurking, dark secrets
  • The potential to pull a Falling Down (aka bad press for WWE)

That makes it six to the pros and five to the cons. And so, according to the ancient rules of the pros and cons list, the winner is the pros! The jobbers stay!
