Semifinals set for NXT UK Heritage Cup tournament

Trent Seven defeated Kenny Williams on this week’s episode of NXT UK to advance in the Heritage Cup tournament. Seven will face Dave Mastiff in the semifinals. Mastiff defeated Joseph Conners in the first round last week.

Noam Dar vs. A-Kid is the other semifinal match in the tournament. Dar advanced by defeating Alexander Wolfe in the first round, while A-Kid defeated Flash Morgan Webster.

WWE hasn’t announced when the semifinal matches will be airing.

NXT UK results: WALTER-Dragunov championship contract signing

After doing so for the untimely passing of Karsten Beck last week, I would like to dedicate my report to my grandmother, who sadly passed away at the age of 92 this week. Thankfully, she only had to suffer for a few days after living a heathy and happy life up until recently. She may also very well be the reason I encountered wrestling when I did as almost 29 years ago to the day, I spent a night at my grandparents’ apartment and zapped through the cable channels. I chanced upon wrestling (the 1991 Hogan/Warrior vs. Slaughter/Adnan/Mustafa SummerSlam main event), got hooked right away, and would subsequently spend each Friday night at my their apartment to watch WWF on German channel Tele 5 until we moved and finally got a dish. She would always stay up with me and watch along, including comforting me as I sobbed myself to sleep when the dastardly Undertaker cheated to beat Hulk Hogan a few months later at Survivor Series. She will be dearly missed.

Quick results:

  • The highlight of the show was the excellent main event angle with the contract signing for next week’s WALTER vs. Ilja Dragunov NXT UK title match. The whole affair was super intense and they had a brutal brawl afterwards.
  • Trent Seven advanced to the Heritage Cup semifinals, beating Kenny Williams.
  • Eddie Dennis pinned Oliver Carter, a setup for Dennis to call out Mark Andrews & Flash Morgan Webster for next week.
  • Nina Samuels pinned Amale and called out Piper Niven after the match.
  • After being suspended by WWE due to #SpeakingOut allegations, a Joe Coffey video promised he would return soon.

Show Recap:

Eddie Dennis pinned Oliver Carter (6:27)

Dennis last wrestled in January at the tapings following NXT UK TakeOver: Blackpool II. He returned in the first episode from this set of tapings and talked to Pretty Deadly after their match with the contents of this conversation still being a mystery.

Carter looked great here and got to show off his athleticism, taking a large portion of the match and countering out of a lot of Dennis’ offense. Dennis eventually won with the Severed Bridge (basically a Razor’s Edge).

After the match, Dennis told Carter to get out of his ring and go back to the tag division. He said, speaking of the tag division, it was a shame what happened to Flash Morgan Webster (who got attacked backstage recently). “We all know who did it. Who profited the most from Webster being out?” But, he would not say who it was. He invited Webster and Mark Andrews to a mediation next week, a confrontation was made official later in the show.

**********

– A Joe Coffey vignette aired. He has been absent during this latest set of tapings, likely due to allegations brought against him during the #SpeakingOut movement as he was suspended by WWE in early July. WWE has decided to use him again as the end of the video read that he would “return soon”.

– Speaking of wrestlers seemingly being re-established after #SpeakingOut allegations, Jordan Devlin will return to action next week after his promo last week.

– NXT UK will air at 4 PM ET/8 PM GMT next week due to Summer Time ending in Europe this Sunday while it goes on a few weeks longer in the U.S., shortening the time difference between the UK and the East Coast to four instead of five hours.

Nina Samuels pinned Amale (5:37)

This match was set up when Amale and Samuels tagged two weeks ago as Samuels decided to abandon her partner because she wasn’t getting all the spotlight to herself. Later in that episode, they also brawled during Kay Lee Ray’s State of the Union address.

Amale started out very aggressively and had the advantage at times, but Samuels used some cheap tactics to gain the advantage and worked over Amale’s arm and shoulder with submissions. At one point, Amale got a near fall with a Northern Lights suplex. Samuels eventually thwarted another attack by Amale and hit the Final Act (a rolling neckbreaker) for the pinfall victory.

After the match, Samuels was interviewed backstage. She said a two person act was not what the audience wanted and called out Piper Niven, telling her she would be watching.

Next up was the final opening round match of the Heritage Cup. As a refresher, the Cup is an approach at traditional British Wrestling with a special set of rules:

  • All matches consist of six three minute rounds with 20 second breaks between each round.
  • All matches are 2-out-of-3 falls.
  • Falls can be won by pinfall, submission, or countout.
  • Once a fall occurs, the round ends.
  • The match ends once a wrestler has won two falls.
  • In the event of a disqualification or countout, the match instantly ends without the need for two falls.
  • If all six rounds are completed, whomever is ahead on falls wins the match.

Heritage Cup opening round match: Trent Seven beat Kenny Williams in the fifth round, two falls to one

They wrestled back and forth in the first round with neither man getting a clear advantage. Seven missed a crossbody as the round came to an end. Williams hit a sunset flip for a two count near the end of round two and Seven picked him up for either a power bomb or shoulderbreaker briefly after the round ended and was visibly upset when the referee told him to stop.

With just three seconds left in round three, Trent hit the Seven Star Lariat and got a pin at 2:57 of the round. Williams got a pin at 0:37 of round four with a roll up after feigning a leap frog to tie Seven 1-1. Williams hit a stiff see-saw lariat early in round five for a near fall, followed by a DDT for another one.

Seven came back with an Emerald Frosion for a near fall of his own. Seven then rolled through on an impressive springboard top rope hurricanrana by Williams to score the winning pin at 2:22 of round five for the victory. The two shook hands and hugged afterwards.

Seven will face Dave Mastiff in the semifinals of the Heritage Cup while Noam Dar faces A-Kid in the other semifinal.

    – WALTER was seen walking through the backstage area with Alexander Wolfe. He told him to stay behind and they shook hands.

NXT UK Champion WALTER and Ilja Dragunov contract signing

WALTER and Dragunov will face off for WALTER’s title next week. This, of course, ended in a brawl, but with an intensity rarely seen in WWE these days.

Both men came out and stood by the table and slowly got down in their chair, staring at each other while they signed the contract. WALTER declined to say anything when asked by Sid Scala. Dragunov, when asked, got up and started screaming “UNBESIEGBAR” (“unbeatable”, his catch phrase) but got slapped down hard mid-word. WALTER then ripped his shirt off and started turning the challenger’s chest into mincemeat with brutal chops.

He went to power bomb Dragunov through the table, but he escaped and attacked, sending WALTER to ringside. Dragunov jumped onto him from the top rope to the outside, but WALTER chopped him out of mid-air, then power bombed him on the apron, followed by a stiff lariat. He then beat him down some more. “The Mad Russian” came back and they ended up going through the barricade together as officials scrambled to separate them.

Dragunov then grabbed the title belt and threw it at WALTER as the show went of the air.

This, the tag match from last week, and the promos and videos leading up to the match were probably the best build for any title match in WWE this year. Go out of your way to see the match next week as it promises to be a brutal, hard hitting affair.

    Next week:

    • WALTER defends the NXT UK Championship against Ilja Dragunov
    • NXT Cruiserweight Champion Jordan Devlin returns to action
    • Flash Morgan Webster & Mark Andrews confront Eddie Dennis

Heritage Cup match, NXT UK title contract signing set for next week

The first round of NXT UK’s Heritage Cup tournament is set to conclude next week.

In the Heritage Cup tournament’s final first round match, Trent Seven will face off with Kenny Williams on NXT UK next Thursday (October 22). Seven was among the first seven wrestlers announced for the Heritage Cup tournament. Williams qualified for the tournament as its final entrant by defeating Ashton Smith and Amir Jordan in a Wild Card triple threat match.

The winner of Seven vs. Williams will advance to face Dave Mastiff in the semifinals of the Heritage Cup tournament. Mastiff defeated Joseph Conners via knockout in a first round match on NXT UK this week. Noam Dar vs. A-Kid will be the other semifinal match. Dar advanced by defeating Alexander Wolfe in the first round, while A-Kid defeated Flash Morgan Webster in his first round match.

Heritage Cup matches have the following rules:

    • There will be six rounds for Heritage Cup matches. Each round will be three minutes.
    • There will be 20-second breaks between each round.
    • All matches are two-out-of-three falls.
    • Falls can be won by pinfall, submission, or countout.
    • Once a fall occurs, the round ends.
    • Once someone has won two falls, they are declared the winner and they advance in the tournament.
    • If there’s a disqualification or knockout, the match ends without the need for two falls.
    • If a match goes the full six rounds, whoever is ahead on falls wins.

The Heritage Cup will be defended as a championship under the same rules following the tournament.

WWE has also announced that next Thursday’s NXT UK will feature a contract signing for WALTER and Ilja Dragunov’s upcoming NXT UK Championship match. WALTER is defending his title against Dragunov on NXT UK the following week (Thursday, October 29). Dragunov & Pete Dunne defeated WALTER & Wolfe in the main event of NXT UK this week. Dragunov pinned WALTER to get the win. It’s the first time WALTER has been pinned in NXT UK.

NXT UK results: A-Kid vs. Flash Morgan Webster

    Quick results:

    • A-Kid beat Flash Morgan Webster in a great Heritage Cup first round match. Webster was laid out backstage after the match, just as Mark Andrews had been a few months ago.
    • Ilja Dragunov challenged NXT UK Champion WALTER & Alexander Wolfe to a tag team match next week and chose Pete Dunne to be his partner. Dragunov and WALTER will face off for the title in three weeks.
    • Pretty Deadly wouldn’t reveal what they talked about with Eddie Dennis two weeks ago, so this storyline continues.
    • NXT UK Women’s Champion Kay Lee Ray addressed the NXT UK Universe, resulting in all the other women on the roster coming out, leading to a big brawl.
    • Xia Brookside & Dani Luna beat Nina Samuels & Amale after Samuels abandoned her partner.
    • Saxon Huxley beat Jack Starz in a dominant performance.

    Show Recap:

Xia Brookside & Dani Luna beat Amale & Nina Samuels (7:12)

The story here was Samuels abandoning Amale when she wasn’t the center of attention.

Samuels music interrupted Amale’s entrance and she didn’t look super happy about that. Luna and Samuels started out and Samuels worked the arm, but Luna escaped with a firemen’s carry. Brookside tagged, but quickly found herself locked in a leg vice. She escaped and double-teamed Samuels with Luna after a tag. Amale tagged in and hit Luna with a soccer kick to the chest before tagging back out.

Luna escaped a double clothesline attempt, hit one of her own and then covered Samuels, who was hit with a crossbody by Brookside seconds later. Brookside followed up with some spinning headscissors, but found herself on the receiving end of a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Amale worked over Brookside in the corner as the ref was distracted. Brookside was in trouble after a reverse suplex. Amale blind tagged in which had Samuels confused as she went for a roll-up but was no longer the legal woman.

Brookside finally tagged out and Luna ran wild on Amale for a bit and hit a deadlift back suplex for a near-fall. As Amale crawled to her corner, Samuels stuck her hand out, but then jumped off the apron and walked to the back. Amale was puzzled but fought on. Luna hit her with a German suplex before Amale was then hit with a Brooksie Bomb into a power bomb by Luna, followed by a bridging pin by Brookside for the win.

    – Ilja Dragunov blew off an interviewer and confronted Sid Scala, who was talking to Pete Dunne in the hallway. He demanded to face Alexander Wolfe and WALTER next week. Scala asked who his partner would be and Dragunov told him Dunne. Dunne shrugged and accepted.

    – Piper Niven was asked about KLR’s championship address. She said quite a few people would be interested in what she would have to say.

Saxon Huxley pinned Jack Starz after an elevated drop (5:18)

This stemmed from Starz telling Huxley he would get a win “next time” after his match with WALTER two weeks ago.

Starz tried going the technical route with wrist locks, but was manhandled by the sheer power of Huxley. Starz hit a number of dropkicks, but was swatted away and thrown across the ring off a gorilla press. Huxley continued to use Starz as a lawn dart. Huxley continued to maul Starz and locked in a torture rack that Starz eventually escaped. Starz hit a dropkick to the thigh and a crossbody for a cover, but Huxley easily kicked out. Huxley then managed to pick Starz up on his shoulders and hit an elevated drop for the pin.

    – A Gallus vignette aired focusing on how they won the NXT UK tag titles and their past history together in promotions across the UK.

    – Pretty Deadly entered the arena and were asked about what Eddie Dennis told them two weeks ago. They said they talked about Nanaya “as in Nanaya business.”

    – Brookside and Luna were asked about KLR’s address tonight. Luna said if KLR doesn’t watch what she says, she’ll find out how many enemies she really has.

Heritage Cup First Found: A-Kid beat Flash Morgan Webster 2-1 (13:12)

Webster pinned Kid in round two with a rollup, got pinned after a dropkick to the head in round four, and submitted just as round five was ending. A-Kid will next face Noam Dar in the semifinals.

    Round 1

A-Kid quickly grounded Webster and they traded holds and counters. Both men worked each other over, but neither could get the clear advantage. Webster threw A-Kid over the top and followed with a springboard dropkick on the apron as the round ended.

    Round 2

A-Kid took down Webster with a single leg and locked in a headlock, but got countered into a leg vice. He escaped and transitioned into a bow and arrow submission. which Webster quickly escaped. They traded counters and pinfall attempts when Webster pinned A-Kid with a roll-up at 2:00 of the round, going 1-0.

    Round 3

A-Kid started attacking Webster’s arm, Webster locked in a straight jacket submission, which A-Kid reversed. A-Kid hit a reverse bodypress from the turnbuckle and a fisherman’s suplex for a near fall. Webster came back with the Rude Boy Block, but A-Kid rolled him up for a near fall. Webster hit a poison rana at the end of the round, so he couldn’t go for a pin.

    Round 4

Webster hit a running kick right away, but A-Kid narrowly kicked out of the cover. Kid hit a Spanish Fly off the top and followed with a stiff dropkick to the head for the pin, going 1-1 at 0:48 of the round.

    Round 5

A-Kid hit some strikes and kicks, slapping Webster with a few hard shots. Webster hit a flash Falcon Arrow for another near fall. They traded strikes while on their knees and Kid went for a omoplata which Webster escaped. Moments later, Webster hit a dive to the outside but missed a senton from the top when A-Kid rolled out of the way and followed up with an armbar, transitioning into the omoplata for the submission win at 2:57 of the round, winning the match 2-1.

    – NXT UK Champion WALTER vs. Ilja Dragunov takes place on NXT UK on October 29th. A great video looked at their feud and did a very good job showcasing the challenger’s intensity.

    – A video from “during the break” showed Webster laid out backstage. Primate alerted Mark Andrews to this fact who then ran through the backstage area. I have no idea if it means anything, but The Hunt was on hand for both Webster and Andrews being laid out.

NXT UK Women’s Champion Kay Lee Ray State of the Union address

KLR said that people thought she couldn’t do it and would lose her NXT UK Women’s Championship, but she defeated Piper Niven two weeks ago. She said every week, her championship reign got longer and longer. As she was talking, Xia Brookside, Dani Luna, Isla Dawn, Nina Samuels and Amale came out.

Samuels and Amale started arguing about their match from earlier tonight. KLR said that those two couldn’t even get along long enough to challenge her. Niven then walked out and shoved Samuels and Amale aside. As she got on the apron, they pulled Niven down and started attacking her. KLR was amused by all of this.

Aoife Valkyrie suddenly was in the ring and KLR went to attack her, but Valkyrie ducked and hit a springboard cross body on the champion. Brookside, Luna, and Dawn also entered the ring and surrounded KLR and attacked and finally, Niven entered the ring.

KLR managed to hit a superkick on Brookside and escaped. Everybody started brawling in the ring as Brookside attacked KLR on the outside and hit a flying headscissors on the champion, but quickly was wiped out with a clothesline as KLR scrambled to the back.

As she was about to go backstage, Jinny walked out and KLR backed into her. As KLR saw who it was, she smiled and went to point out all the other women brawling in the ring, but Jinny didn’t play along and punched her. They brawled around ringside and Jinny threw her into the announce table, clotheslining her over the barricade into the ringside area.

Jinny hit a crossbody on KLR on the outside and Niven hit a rolling senton off the apron on Amale and Samuels. Everybody kept brawling and Valkyrie eventually hit a top rope crossbody on all the other women on the outside. KLR had crawled away and smiled at the pile of humanity in front of her as she got to her feet and made her way to the back.

This was a fun segment to end the show.

    Next week:

The Heritage Cup continues as Dave Mastiff faces Joseph Conners and Ilja Dragunov & Pete Dunne team up to take on NXT UK Champion WALTER & Alexander Wolfe, leading up to the big WALTER/Dragunov title match in three weeks.

Dragunov saved Dunne from WALTER and Wolfe at the end of last week’s NXT UK episode. They went face-to-face after being drawn against each other and Dar tried to cheap shot Wolfe, but Dunne blocked it, snapped Dar’s fingers, and threw him out of the ring.
