AEW Women’s World title match announced for Double or Nothing

A match for the AEW Women’s World title has been announced for Double or Nothing.

AEW confirmed tonight on Dynamite that Hikaru Shida will defend the title against Britt Baker at Double or Nothing on May 30 . The two have been feuding in recent weeks, with the storyline being that Baker has racked up victories on Dark and Dark: Elevation, putting her at the top of the women’s division rankings.

In recent months, Shida has defended the AEW Women’s title against Ryo Mizunami, Abadon, and most recently Tay Conti on the April 21 edition of Dynamite. After Shida successfully retained the title, Baker came out and showed a graphic of her officially becoming the number one contender.

The AEW Women’s Championship match is the first match to be announced for Double or Nothing, which is expected to be the first AEW event with a full capacity crowd since March of 2020. A number one contender’s match between PAC and Orange Cassidy will determine Kenny Omega’s opponent for the show on next week’s Dynamite, and Cody Rhodes will make a major announcement regarding Double or Nothing on the same show.

AEW notes: Double or Nothing weekend, Tag title match next week

AEW president and head booker Tony Khan appeared on Wednesday’s Busted Open Radio to help promote Wednesday’s Blood & Guts match in addition to some news for the immediate future.

Khan said they are allotting nearly the entire second hour of tonight’s show to the Blood & Guts match. They will have their biggest crowd since the pandemic at more than 1500 fans which is close to 40% capacity for Jacksonville’s Daily’s Place.

He said they expect to be at full capacity for the Double or Nothing pay-per-view on Saturday, May 30th. Additionally, Double or Nothing weekend will feature a live Dynamite on Friday and a Saturday fan festival.

In running down the card for tonight’s show, he said the winner of the four-way match between SCU, Jurassic Express, The Acclaimed and the Varsity Blonds will get their shot at Tag Team Champions The Young Bucks on next week’s Dynamite. Given the stipulation that they will split their team up the next time they lose, SCU are favored tonight.

Khan said he’s heard The Acclaimed’s rap and that it’s one of Max Caster’s best.

The full card is as follows:

  • Blood & Guts: The Inner Circle vs. The Pinnacle
  • AEW World Champion Kenny Omega & MT Nakazawa vs. Jon Moxley and Eddie Kingston
  • Cody Rhodes vs. QT Marshall
  • Tag Team title shot eliminator: SCU vs. Jurassic Express vs. Varsity Blonds vs. The Acclaimed
  • Britt Baker in action
  • Miro, Scorpio Sky and Ethan Page appearances

AEW Double or Nothing 2021 announced for Sunday, May 30

AEW has confirmed when its next pay-per-view will be taking place.

During tonight’s Revolution PPV, it was announced that Double or Nothing 2021 will take place on Sunday, May 30. The show will be held at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Florida.

May 30 is the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Ticket on-sale information for Double or Nothing 2021 has yet to be announced.

This will be the second straight AEW PPV to take place on a Sunday. This year’s Revolution was the first Sunday PPV in AEW history.

In an interview with Forbes ahead of Revolution, AEW president and CEO Tony Khan spoke about the status of Sunday PPVs:

On the three-day holidays, I think it’s good. I actually would argue that for Double or Nothing or All Out, a large percentage of the country is going to have Monday off, and in England those are bank holidays so a large percentage of England, people aren’t really working very much. Most people have Labor Day and Memorial Day off here and abroad.

Double or Nothing, I am strongly considering going to Sunday. All Out I really think it would be really smart to do Sunday because then I don’t compete with College Football and the NFL won’t be going head-to-head. Full Gear I will keep on a Saturday. Revolution and Full Gear, whenever possible, I will do on a Saturday.

Double or Nothing 2019 took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and was the first show in AEW history. AEW was supposed to return to the MGM Grand Garden Arena for last year’s Double or Nothing, but the PPV was moved to Daily’s Place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When last year’s event was moved, it was originally stated that Double or Nothing 2021 would be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

For those who had purchased tickets to Double or Nothing 2021 in Las Vegas, a refund will automatically be issued to their credit card within 30 business days if they bought tickets through AXS online or by phone. Refunds will otherwise be available at the original point of purchase.
