TNA Impact 5-29-15 – May Mayhem TV Report with EY-Angle I Quit Match

By Jeremy Peeples, WrestlingObserver.com

Last week, Destination America aired last year’s Slammiversary show instead of Impact. The week before that, Eric Young beat Kurt Angle in a Hardcore War tag team match and then choked him with Chris Melendez’s artificial leg. Tonight, during May Mayhem (because every show MUST have a title to indiciate how special it is), EY battles Kurt in an I Quit match. The Dollhouse vs. Gail Kim rivalry continues with Gail facing Taryn in a cage match, and the best of five series between The Wolves and the Dirty Heels continues with the second match. The Wolves won, so the Heels will be looking to win by any means necessary to even things up.

The show begins with EY in his car with a multi-camera shoot until he gets to the building and brawls with Kurt. They go back and forth between cameras way too quickly and get separated while EY yells about breaking Kurt’s damn neck and just yells. Josh says that tonight anarchy rules…but since I guess WWE owns that name, tonight is May Mayhem. The Knockouts promo airs and we start off with the first match – Gail Kim vs. Taryn Terrell in a cage. Al Snow and his jacket are with Josh in the closet. Al describes the Dollhouse as hot, but creepy.

Match 1 – Gail Kim vs. Taryn Terrell – Six Sides of Steel

Gail jumps Taryn on the floor, but the goons try to get involved. Stinger splash in the corner to the challenger. Gail gets 2 off a flapjack. Gail smashes her into the cage and thankfully Al doesn’t compare it to a cheese grater so Josh could correct him. As expected, the camera hole in the cage is used for interference. Gail takes an awesome bump off the cage. Jade and Marti tie Gail’s hair into the cage. Taryn smashes Gail’s hand into the cage to either break her ring hand or take her wedding ring off. A kick to the stomach sets up a flipping neckbreaker and a suplex for 2. Gail bowls over the champion before hitting a stunner to the knee in the corner. The goons prevent Gail from escaping while Jade gets the Maria Cam treatment. The Cutter hits and gets the win.

Josh says in 19 days, Taryn will break Gail’s streak as KOs champion. Taryn hits a lariat to Earl and closes the catch…but doesn’t latch it up, and Kong comes out while Taryn yells “lookit lookit lookit!” They lock the cage and Taryn has the key in the corner with her while the goons attack Gail. Taryn tells Gail that she’s nothing compared to her while Kong attacks the cage with a chair. Taryn takes Gail’s ring off, licks it, and smashes her hand against the mat and stomps it while Josh talks about Taryn’s past mental problems. Taryn plays with Gail’s ring using her teeth and we go to a break. This was a far better use of 13 minutes to start a show than Raw usually is.

After the break, we see Al and Josh full-screen as they recap Gail’s broken finger. A quick recap of the EY-Angle brawl from earlier leads to a Storm-Magnus-Mickie recap. Josh says that the great thing about TNA is that they have “really adult stuff” and aren’t PG. Josh asks why Al has a suitcase and says it’s because they’re moving to Wednesday. Mickie says she’s coming back for one more match and recaps the Storm-Magnus problems and why it’s so hard for her. Storm comes down and she says she wants to talk to him about Magnus not calling him and apologizing for the guitar shot.

He says she doesn’t need to apologize to him and he’d have done what Magnus did if he was in his shoes. Mickie tells James that Magnus is just trying to protect her from Bram, and Storm says he’s not a bad guy – he holds the door open for ladies, and if that makes him bad, then he’s a bad, bad guy. The crowd chants “you’re a bad guy” and he says “naw”. Storm really needs to be a babyface. Storm talks about getting a guitar for her, a blanket for Donovan, and even bought Magnus his gladiator helmet back. The crowd chants “that was funny” and he talks about getting Mickie a meeting with big country music people – even Dale Oliver and Billy Corgan. One of these is not like the other, one of these things just doesn’t belong. Josh, who is apparently now an idiot, says that Storm just might be trustworthy while Al points out that he isn’t. We get an X Division gauntlet next and get a graphic with a billion guys on-screen. Kenny is defending his title tonight in this and wants to keep the title to get a World title shot.

Josh says that EY and Kurt have been locked into rooms, and EY breaks his window while showing his Twitter feed. We get a new X division hype video that will presumably air before every division match like the Knockouts one.

Match Two – Manik vs. Spud vs. DJZ vs. Tigre Uno vs. Argos vs. Crazzy Steve vs. Kenny King – X Division Title Gauntlet

Manik is out first, while Spud draws the second spot. They brawl in the corner and Spud goes to toss him over. Spud goes for an outside-in DDT, but gets faceplanted. DJZ is out and they talk about him having nowhere to go with the demise of the BroMans. Spud and DJZ attack Manik. Mandrews comes out to no reaction and ranas Manik after being tossed up by DJZ. Faces team up on Manik while Spud tries to eliminate him, but he comes back in. Argos comes out, also to no reaction. Running headscissors to Manik. He misses a corner charge, but gets a springboard rana to Manik. Manik avoids a Mandrews SSP, but can’t get rid of Mandrews until he smashes his head into the post. Crazzy Steve is out for an ad break.

Uno is eliminated during the break while Al says he thought that was Argos. Kenny King is out last. Kenny runs wild before Spud attacks him. Kenny fights back and capture suplexes DJZ. Steve gets an over the top inverted triangle over the ropes, which leads to his elimination. Argos is tossed out by King. Kenny hits the Royal Flush and Josh says Spud hit the canvas at 150 MPH. DJZ gets a face buster onto King, but King reverses a whip and sends him out. Manik wants a truce with King and attacks Spud. Kenny tries to toss Spud out, and as he looks, Manik hits the pop-up Codebreaker. Manik gets tossed, so it’s down to Spud vs. Kenny King. Kenny lands a slew of mounted punches to Spud.

Josh says that Spud has to win by pinfall or submission, while Kenny can just be DQed. Spud gets a small package out of the Royal Flush and Spud wins! He gets his second X Division title win, so that win sure did a lot of good for King. At least it gave Spud the motivation for his best promo of the year. We get a graphic for EY vs. Kurt and find out that it’s a title match, while Heels-Wolves match two is up next. Back in the booth, Josh runs down that they’ll be changing to Wednesday nights next week and Al says he’ll have an amazing jacket for the PPV. The Dirty Heels come out first, followed by The Wolves.

Match Three – The Wolves vs. The Dirty Heels in Match Two of the Best of Five Series

Aries jumps the gun and Roode leapfrogs Davey mid-ring leading to a Davey dive to Aries on the floor! Eddie gets a schoolboy for 2. Davey and Eddie kick and chop away at Roode. Roode gets an atomic drop leading to a move from Aries setting up a Perfect necksnap from Roode for 2. Davey bonks Austin’s head into Eddie’s and Aries comes back with corner punches in his corner. Roode comes in and chops him down while Aries gets the tope con hilo for 2.

Roode nuns wild on Eddie before tagging Aries in and Davey makes a save. Eddie avoids a double team with a pair of kicks and throws Aries into Roode before tagging Davey in. Double team drop toehold>kneedrop by the Wolves to Aries and a corner head bonk for Roode. Inverted figure four/Indian deathlock by Davey to Roode – nice. Roode reversed the hold and gets the rope. German suplex with a double team jackknife cover gets 2 for the Wolves. Roode coes back from some double teams with a big lariat and a kick before making the tag.

Corner elbow and punch exchange with Davey. Aries gets a missile dropkick to one Wolf and gets a flipping German to Davey alongside the Last Chancery while Roode gets the crossface on Eddie. Davey knees out of a brainbuster, but eats a roaring elbow. Falcon Arrow>high kick from the Wolves leads to a 2.9! Roode spinebusters Eddie leading to a 450 by Aries for 2.9! Big chops by Aries, but the Wolves double team to get ahead. Aries avoids the powerbomb>backstabber and Aries flips through into a Chancery, but Davey double stomps him! Powerbomb>backstabber hits and the Wolves are up 2-0. Holy crap was this great – it might’ve been the best traditional tag team match on TV all year.

Angelina is startled by a camera guy and says she’ll address Velvet next. But first, Kenny King calls MVP, who he calls “Montel Vontaveous Porter” and is pissed off at because he’s not here. Angelina talks to Velvet, who is now in the crowd. Angelina yells for her friends to come out by just yelling “friends!”, which is great. She has her own personal security team who will haul her out if she touches Angelina. She calls her a fired freak while Velvet stares stone-faced. Angelina goes to leave, but Velvet jumps her from behind. Al points out that since Velvet doesn’t work her, every single thing Velvet does should result in an assault charge. Angelina calls her a freak and an idiot some more. Angelina’s mic work throughout this entire thing was really annoying. Anderson is backstage in a pink-lit looking both old and jacked. Ken introduces the new cage he’ll have Tyrus stuck in tonight when he faces EC3 next.

Josh says that one thing he loves about TNA is that he can say what he wants and he feels that EC3 should be World champion. Al says that EC3 deserves a shot, but not the title. EC3 says that despite his rage, Tyrus will not be a rat in the cage – I love EC3’s act so much. And then Ken Anderson came out and said his name twice. Well, said it once and yelled it the second time. Al says that Tyrus is over 400 pounds now. Despite Tyrus not being in the cage, the bell rings.

Match Four – Ken Anderson vs. EC3 with Tyrus Locked in a Cage

Ken starts things off by jumping Tyrus and trying to get him in the cage, but EC3 attacks Ken. EC3 bashes him into the cage, which I guess is legal in this match. Snap suplex by EC3 gets 2 as Josh plugs Hillbilly Blood and BBQ Pitmasters. Al and Josh talk about being afraid of Dixie and Janice while Josh says he has EC3’s signs made for him. So is Josh officially a heel announcer now? Josh says that EC3 was planning to arm wrestle, and was shocked by the street fight. Ken attacks Tyrus and hits his hands with a chair, then his gut and back. Tyrus goes into the cage to avoid more chairshots and Ken locks the cage. Why not do that before the match and not break up the match?

Ken runs wild with clotheslines, so EC3 rakes the eyes. Ken gets a powerslam for 2. Back and forth whips into the buckle lead to Ken getting 1 off a backdrop. Ken goes up top, but gets crotched. Inverted superplex gets 2.9! EC3 gets a Stinger splash, but Ken counters the One Percenter with a Finlay roll and a swanton for 2. EC3 counters the Mic Check, but lands it and only gets 2! Ken repositions himself, goes for it again, and EC3 counters it into his finisher for the win. This was pretty fun, honestly – not a great match, but it served its purpose. EC3 and Ken shake hands afterwards since Ken was beaten fairly…kinda

Destination America has made an ad to hype up Awesome Kong. We go backstage to Spud saying that the first time he won the title, it could be a fluke, but now, he’s legit. He puts over Joe, AJ, and Jerry Lynn while the camera man talks about Option C. Spud said he didn’t even know Destination X was so close – well, we still don’t know. Al and Josh talk and say that next week, we’ll get match three in the best of five series. Josh says that on the TNA site, EY has been counting own this I Quit match. Somehow, EY getting a tattoo months ago is due to this match. He’s flanked by security, as is Kurt.

Main Event – Kurt Angle vs. Eric Young – I Quit Match

EY jumps Kurt during the big match intro – good, it would be ridiculous to not do that. Kurt gets a takedown and some mounted punches. They fight to the floor and EY gets a cheapshot and some chops. They exchange punches mid-ring before EY gets an eye rake. Kurt gets a German, then another, a third hits, now a fourth, and a fifth leads to Kurt releasing it so the ref can ask if he quits. EY says no, so Kurt suplexes him some more. EY doesn’t give up again for an ad break.

After the break, Kurt dominates in the corner until EY hits him with the brace and gets the figure four. Kurt reverses the pressure, but EY won’t give up. EY gets the Angle slam and the ankle lock, but Kurt won’t quit. Kurt counters even with the grapevine on and gets a wonky figure four. EY misses a missile dropkick and Kurt gets a figure four. Before, Kurt did this as an homage to Dick Beyer, but while EY taps out, he didn’t say he quit. Kurt releases the hold, and eats a low blow. I like that – Kurt got the win in theory with an implied submission, but didn’t get the win here. Piledriver hits hard, and Kurt weakly responds with a no when asked to quit before telling EY to kiss his ass.

EY goes for a Gotch piledriver, but Kurt flips out and gets an ankle lock and EY quits after the grapevine. Al says that since Kurt’s a master, it makes sense for EY to give up so quickly from that move. They really pushed the move to Wednesday hard here – so while the move has bee promoted poorly before tonight, they tried to make up for it here. We get highlights of tonight’s show to set up next week, which is far better than them spoiling the show with clips. This was a pretty good show with one absolute must-watch match in the Heels vs. Wolves match, and the rest of it was at least fun.

FRIDAY’S NEWS UPDATE

  • Stephanie McMahon filed papers on Wednesday to start selling up to 609,733 shares of WWE stock from her trust fund starting on 8/10 provided the stock price is above a certain unlisted level.  That stock would be worth today about $8.7 million.
  • The Dwayne Johnson movie “San Andreas” opens at the theaters tonight.
  • As noted earlier, Kevin Owens has signed a new deal for the main roster.  He starts next weekend at the house shows if he’s not on this weekend.  But he’s advertised starting next weekend.  It should be noted that they’ve got communications issues because he’s being advertised on NXT shows on the same night as a few of his WWE house show dates.  We’re told he’ll be doing very few more NXT shows past TVs.  He will be a regular on Raw & Smackdown going forward, so it’s not just this week and done.  He’s taking a lot of the Rusev bookings.  Rusev has been pulled from all shows for a few months, which makes his working Sunday questionable, but the listed schedule still has him.
  • UFC spent a ton of money on this commercial and you’ll be seeing it everywhere for the six weeks
  • Daniel Cormier from Levi’s Stadium at the moment Seth Rollins won the WWE title
  • Former speaker of the house Dennis Hastert, who was heavily pushed for his success among the wrestling community because of being a former wrestler, is in hot water here
  • Add the 7/13 Raw to Brock Lesnar’s schedule.
  • Sheamus has a role as “Rocksteady” in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 movie.
  • WWE sent Eva Marie to walk the red carpet for the “San Andreas” premiere yesterday.
  • WWE stock closed today at $14.30 per share, the same as yesterday.
  • This is scary.  Ericka Almeida, who weighed in at 116 today, said she had to lose 35 pounds when she got the call a few weeks ago to make weight for her fight tomorrow with Juliana Lima.
  • Battlewar 27 on 7/26 in Montreal at Les Foufounes Electriqeus
  • There will be the annual Fitness Expo in San Jose on 6/13 and 6/14 at the Convention Center.  There are all kinds of activities including a Jiu Jitsu tournament, a strongman challenge, a wrestling tournament, a powerlifting tournament and appearances by Phil Heath and Jay Cutler of Mr. Olympia fame.  In past years, a lot of MMA stars have appeared as well.
  • The Owen Hart DVD is called “Hart of Gold” and is scheduled for an October release.
  • This is Scott Steiner so if you choose to believe it or not, it is presented for purely entertainment fashion:  “I’ve never failed a drug test in my life.  When WWE told me to take one, I told them to have HHH pick me up in a limo, then we could go test together.  They never asked again.”
  • IHWE on 6/6 in Crowley, TX featuring Lance Hoyt (Archer).  They also have a legends of the Sportatorium Q&A on 6/7 at 3 p.lm. with Marc Lowrance, Black Bart and James Beard.  They also have a secondshow that night at 6 p.m.
  • Great North Wrestling tonight in Smiths Falls, ONT at he Memorial Center with Brutus Beefcake and Hannibal.
  • An interview with Nora Greenwald and Lisa Moretti, who were Molly Holly and Ivory in WWE years back
  • Dolph Ziggler on stage with Britney Spears
  • Jeff Jarrett, Lance Archer and Jim Duggan promoting Global Force Wrestling last night on CBS Sports Network
  • Photos up here

James Storm talks about going babyface, the Revolution gimmick, TNA and more

(credit to Adam Davey @ v2wrestling.com)

The v2wrestling podcast recently interviewed James Storm where he talks
about the creative evolution of his Revolution and addresses some of the
rumours about TNA at the moment. The audio can be listened to here –
http://v2wrestling.com/5/post/2015/05/the-big-v2-interview-james-storm.html

Here are the highlights:

Original plans for the Revolution:

“The whole startup with the Revolution was a different vision than what I
had in mind. TNA came and asked me if I would help these guys out a little
bit, and I didn’t mind at all. My vision of it at the beginning was I
wanted it to be me, Gunner, Sam Shaw, Lance Hoyt and Crimson. You look at
that group and those are some bad boys. But they had a different vision of
it and they asked me what I thought of it. I make the best out of
everything that I’m given and if I’m able to help some guys out along the
way, that’s what I’ll do. So far I’ve felt like I’ve elevated some of
these guys up.”

The growth of the Revolution:

“First they asked me for my thoughts on it and I told them. Then they
asked me to start out with Sanada and work from there. I was still getting
my feet under me with the heel turn and just figuring what direction I
wanted to go and everything. That was a learning process for me with
Sanada, and we brought in The Great Muta and did a deal with him. Then it
just started growing and we brought in Manik, Abyss and now Khoya, who
I’ve been working with closely to try to get more ring time and more ring
experience for him. I just told TNA that he needs more ring time. I can
teach a monkey how to do wrestling moves, but to actually learn how to
work in front of a crowd is something that he has to learn in the ring, in
front of a crowd. It’s hard for someone to be taught that.”

Does he prefer being a heel or a babyface:

“I always prefer being a heel, just because I was always taught that it’s
easier to piss people off than it is to make people happy. These days it’s
hard for good babyfaces to get over because everybody wants to cheer for
the cheaters or the guys that they think are cool or something. For
example, John Cena. It’s hard for him to get over as a babyface, but I
think if he turned heel, people will really boo the hell out of him. Or he
would actually get those people who are booing him now to start cheering
for him. Wrestling fans are weird, but at the end of the day they want to
cheer for whoever they want to cheer for and that’s how it goes.”

Who can be the top babyface for TNA:

“I could. Given the correct program and everything, I believe I can be
that pure babyface that TNA needs. Just for the simple fact that people
can relate to me. I’m not the giant 6-foot-4 jacked up guy. People from
town say, I want to root for this guy because he kind of reminds me of
someone I’d like to hang out with or could hang out with, you know? It’s
just one of those things where I don’t feel like I got the proper push at
the time when I was the World Heavyweight Champion, but that’s all behind
me now and I’m just moving forward. Given the right opportunity, I could
be that pure babyface that TNA needs.”

The future of the Revolution:

“It’s one of those things where I’m not really sure. I think they’ve got
more plans for it and they kind of want to take it in a different
direction, maybe the direction that I thought of at the very beginning.
They talked to me about some new people coming in and what I thought. I’m
always about trying to make the product better, because once the product’s
better, everybody makes more money. This whole Revolution thing, I like
doing it, but at the same time I like being on my own as well.”

His real-life friendship with Gunner:

“I’ve been friends with Gunner and Crimson for a long time. They came to
me when me and Gunner had our feud and they asked me if I would help
elevate him because I think they wanted to do something with him and the
World Title, and of course I was like, yeah. I love Gunner to death and if
I can help him out, that’s fine. So we did all this and we beat the hell
out of each other, but then he was left off TV for a while and that kind
of bothered me a little bit. I’ve heard now that they’ve got plans to
bring him back and do something really cool with him, so all the best to
Gunner.”

Thoughts on Billy Corgan joining TNA:

“He was at the last TV tapings that we had. They already had the TVs
written and everything right before he came in, so I don’t think he was
able to change stuff around. I got to talk to him and I shot some ideas
and he loved them. He gave me some of his ideas and I was just trying to
make sense out of some of the things he was saying. I really didn’t know
too much about him except he was the lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins,
but talking to him and getting to know him, the guy knows a lot about
wrestling. He looks at it like I do, from a fan’s standpoint. How will
this translate over to the fans? Will they like this or will they not?
Will they be like, this doesn’t make any sense at all? Because wrestling
fans are not stupid — they don’t want to have their intelligence insulted
by some crazy, ridiculous storyline.”

Rumors of TNA being canceled by Destination America:

“I’ve been told by the higher-ups that there’s nothing to worry about. TNA
is owned by a billion dollar company, Panda Energy, so the money is going
to be there. They talk about the network saying this and that. Every
network wants great ratings, but the problem is that it takes time for the
casual wrestling fans and the viewers to find Destination America. A lot
of people don’t have that channel, or it’s a premium channel and they have
to pay for it. My mom actually couldn’t find it until like a month ago. So
it’s just taking people a little longer to find the Destination America
channel. Nobody really knows except for the network and Dixie Carter,
that’s how I look at it. Dixie cares about the wrestlers like they’re her
own kids. If something’s going to go down, she’s going to have a meeting
and talk about it with all of the guys, so that’s how I look at it.”

Who he wants to work with in TNA:

“I’d really like to work with Bobby Lashley. I think me and him could have
some good matches, with him being a babyface and me being a heel, or vice
versa. I always like working with the bigger guys. It’s harder working
with bigger guys when you’re the heel because it’s hard to get sympathy on
them, but Bobby Lashley is one of those babyfaces that I think, even
though he’s a big guy, he can still get sympathy on himself and make
people care about him. I’d also like to have a good run with Kurt (Angle).
I think with me being heel and him being the face of the company right
now, I think that could be a really good angle.”

Thought on Beer Money reunion with Bobby Roode:

“I think creative has got him doing something with Austin Aries right now.
I wish him all the luck and everything, but it’s one of those ideas that I
also pitched to TNA. Hey, how about we get Bobby Roode to join the
Revolution and have Beer Money in the Revolution? So you never know, it
can be something that kind of comes around. To me, I think that could be
quite interesting to have Bobby part of the Revolution.”

His feud with Magnus and a potential match at Slammiversary:

“Yeah, I believe that’s where they’re headed. I’ve worked with Magnus ever
since he came into the company. When he first came in they put him with
Doug (Williams) and then he and Doug always worked with me and Bobby a lot
on all the live events and TVs just to get him used to the American style,
because I don’t think Magnus had really been working that long when he
came to TNA, maybe three years or something. It’s night and day with him
now. He goes in there and he puts everything into his matches. He’s a
student of the game. It’s really a testament to him to show that he’s not
here to just collect a paycheck. He’s learning and he wants to be the
best.”

THURSDAY’S NEWS UPDATE

–There was a big story last night where Bethe Correia said that Ronda Rousey was mentally weak, and said after she beats Ronda Rousey she hopes Rousey doesn’t kill herself.  That prompted Rousey to write, “Suicide is no joke or selling point.  My father will be with me the day I hand you the comeuppance you deserve.”  It’s not a secret that Rousey’s father committed suicide when she was very young, and in an indirect way, that led to her going into judo (swimming was her main sport as a child).  Correia later apologized for her remark, saying that she wasn’t aware Rousey’s father committed suicide.

–The Destination America twitter account re tweeted this comedy story which shows some major insensitivity for them regarding TNA, particularly paragraph four.  It’s nothing against the comedy version of the story, but DA shouldn’t be involved in even joking about TNA going out of business given the situation the performers in the company are in right now.

–Really cool video of Daniel Cormier arriving for work yesterday at the Fox Studios in Los Angeles for the first time since winning the light heavyweight title at http://www.foxsports.com/video/UFC?vid=452656195929

–TNA announced signings of contacts by Eddie Edwards, Davey Richards and Bram.  I guess people forget that TNA had already announced the Edwards & Richards signing back in January.  I was told that this announcement regarded a contract rollover that took place in January and not anything new.  Apparently the idea is to announce a bunch of contract signings today.

–Bloomberg Business has a story on Station Casinos, a group of 21 casinos in Las Vegas run by Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta, looking at going public.  For the first quarter, the company took in $342.8 million in revenue and had $124.6 million in EBITDA, this coming less than six years after having to file for bankruptcy during the downturn of the economy.

–Kevin Connolly was on the Dan Patrick show on Tuesday talking about his experience on Raw.  He said it was a crazy experience and you wouldn’t believe what goes on there.  Patrick quickly changed the subject.  Patrick asked him who would get the best cameo award in the Entourage movie and he said Ronda Rousey, but also said her role was bigger than a cameo and said she had a decent-sized part.  He said they got to know her a little but  and she was really likeable and saw her feminine side, but said they were blown away when they watched her train and hit the speed bag.  Jerry Ferreria wanted to do the fight scene with her and Rousey told him to use a stunt double because they wanted the fight scene to look real.  They did use a stunt double.

–Jeff Jarrett will be throwing out the first pitch tonight before the El Paso vs. Round Rock minor league baseball game on CBS Sports Network.  He’ll also be promoting his live events.  CBS Sports Network is Ch. 221 on DirecTV, Ch. 158 on Dish, and Ch. 413 and 1643 on AT&T U-verse, Ch. 733 and 393 on Comcast and Ch. 315 on Timer Warner Cable.

At the time, he was going to get a lightweight title match with then-champion Benson Henderson.  Grant said he is now 100% healthy, but hasn’t gone all-out in his training. (thanks to Tyler McMurchy).

–WWE stock has been up the past two days, up 26 cents today and closing at $14.30 per share.

UFC TUF 21 episode 5 recap: Marcelo Alfaya battles Jason Jackson

By Steve Juon, Wrestling Observer

Quick update: American Top Team has cut the lead to 100-50 after Hayder Hassan knocked off Andrews Nakahara last week in the first round. Glenn Robinson: “Nothing changes. We lost a fight. So now our job is to avenge Naka’s loss.”

Marcelo Alfaya from ATT says he’s living a dream just being in the TUF house, but he wants to fight. His teammates joke that if they win the six figure contract, they can afford to pay THE TAXES on the mansion they’re in for one year.

At the Blackzilians’ gym they’ve chosen Jason Jackson to have the next fight. Rashad Evans says this show is a microcosm of your life, how sometimes you’ll get the call to fight again two weeks later after a big win. Robinson: “He really loves that feeling of adversity. He begged to go to the opponent’s gym because he wanted the feeling of being booed.” Tyrone Spong: “F#%! strategy – who wants to win?”

Jackson talks about hailing from Jamaica. “I was lost as a person and as a fighter. Blackzilians, they took me under their wing. Everybody is like family. The life I’ve chosen is to take care of my son. My mom is struggling every day and I want that to stop. If you underestimate me I’ll come at you like a shark – pull you down and drown you.”

ATT is debating about who to pick next, and they either want Nate Coy or Marcelo Alfaya to go next. Alfaya suspected he would be next because he’s already in a sauna suit trying to get the weight off, and says he knew there was a chance as far back as Monday. He talks about his family back in South Brazil. “I believe in God, if he wins I win and if I lose he loses.”

15 minutes into the show and it’s time for the weigh-in. Jackson is 170.5. Alfaya is 170 even and he screams in joy on the scale. He puts his shades on, then takes them off for the staredown with Jackson. The two coaches line up behind their men. Dana White says Alfaya has great jiu-jitsu and Jackson has great stand-up plus a reach advantage.

Marcelo Alfaya (American Top Team) vs. Jason Jackson (Blackzilians)

The fight gets underway at 10:34. Alfaya is in the blue trunks, Jackson is in the black. Neither man gives up an inch for the first thirty seconds, staying right in the center and feleing out the range. The ref calls time at 45 seconds because Alfaya’s mouthpiece comes out and he gets a verbal warning. Alfaya goes for a takedown at 2:10 but Jackson winds up on top. They both get up quickly. He goes for it again but can’t keep Jackson down. Jackson does a foot stomp and they break at 2:38. Alfaya keeps going for the takedowns over and over again but all he’s really doing is sticking Jackson to the fence and not letting him do much but block the takedowns. If it weren’t for ATT buzzing in the background it would be a boring round. Nobody knows who won it.

R2 is underway at 10:44. Alfaya gets off a couple of good shots and Jackson backs up briefly. Alfaya is slowly pushing him toward to outer circle. Jackson is getting through with his jab on the counter strikes though and Alfaya’s face is turning red. Scoring is going to be all about what you’re looking for as a judge. Alfaya is controlling the Octagon, but Jackson is doing more damage. Again it’s the crowd that’s making this. A Las Vegas crowd would be much less invested and excited about it. Either way with ten minutes left in the show there’s less than a 50/50 chance of a sudden victory round.

One judge has it 19-19 and the other two have it 20-18 for Jason Jackson. The Blackzilians regain control and go up 150-50. Dana White: “That was not the fight I was expecting. That was a huge disappointment.”

That’s all for TUF this week!

NJPW Best of the Super Juniors Report 5-27 Aomori report: Chase Owens vs. Jushin Thunder Liger

by Bryan Rose, WrestlingObserver.com

Day 5 of the Best of the Super Juniors tournament took place early Wednesday morning. With Shelley out, there were only three matches.

Yohei Komatsu vs. Kyle O’Reilly

O’Reilly overpowered him early with some mat wrestling. Komatsu made the comeback on the outside and tried for a half Boston crab but O’Reilly got out of it. He counters with the armbar, but Komatsu reaches the ropes. The two exchange some great nearfalls, including a phantom cradle by Komatsu and a super stiff lariat by O’Reilly. But the latter prevailed, getting the win after a brainbuster. This was short, but pretty good.

Tiger Mask vs. Mascara Dorada

Tiger Mask played subtle heel in this match, working over Dorada, mostly on the arm. Dorada blindsided him with a dropkick and on the outside, did a huge ropewalk crossbody to the floor. He went for a moonsault, but Tiger Mask got the knees up. Dorada kicked out of the tiger driver and hit his finish, a variation of the Michinoku driver. Solid with a couple of fun spots by Dorada.

Jushin Thunder Liger vs. Chase Owens

There’s no love lost between these two rivals as Owens jumps him on the outside to start. Liger comes back with his rolling senton on the outside and applied a surfboard. Owens came back and used the referee a few times to distract Liger, including putting him in a leglock. Liger reversed a cradle piledriver attempt into a cradle, and when Owens got up laid him out with a palm strike. Owens came back once more, hit the throwback and finished Liger with a cradle piledriver. Short, but got the job done, nothing more.

Current Standings:

Block A:

Kyle O’Reilly (6)

Babaro Cavernario (4)

Gedo (4)

Ryusuke Taguchi (4)

Jushin Thunder Liger (2)

Beretta (2)

Chase Owens (2)

Yohei Komatsu (0)

Block B:

Tiger Mask IV (6)

Kushida (6)

Mascara Dorada (6)

Bobby Fish (6)

Nick Jackson (4)

Rocky Romero (4)

Alex Shelley (2) (Out of tournament due to injury)

David Finlay (0)

And here are recaps of the previous shows for quick reference:

Day 1: Gedo vs. Ryusuke Taguchi

Day 2: Kushida vs. Nick Jackson

Day 3: Jushin Thunder Liger vs. Kyle O’Reilly
Day 4: Ryusuke Taguchi vs. Beretta

UFC Fight Night 67 preview: 5 storylines to watch, betting odds & predictions

By Ryan Frederick, WrestlingObserver.com

The UFC heads to Brazil once again on Saturday night, making a stop in Goiania for the second time for UFC Fight Night 67. The event’s main card airs on FOX Sports 1 on Saturday at 10 PM eastern time, with a preliminary card start time of 7 PM eastern time on UFC Fight Pass, and transitioning over to FOX Sports 1 at 8 PM eastern time.

The event will be headlined by a five-round welterweight main event bout as former Interim UFC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit returns from an injury layoff to take on former title challenger Thiago Alves. In the night’s semi-main event, it will be a long anticipated rematch of a no contest bout from 2011 as Nik Lentz and Charles Oliveira square off in a featherweight bout. Let’s take a closer look at the action on the fight card as we delve deeper into the card and find five storylines to look out for on Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 67.

1. Carlos Condit returns from a torn ACL. How will he fare against Thiago Alves?

Carlos Condit is one of the more exciting fighters in the UFC’s welterweight division, and he is a former Interim UFC Welterweight Champion. He was looking to get back into title contention when he fought Tyron Woodley at UFC 171 in March 2014. He was having trouble with Woodley, but was hanging in there until blowing out his knee in the second round. He was eventually diagnosed with a torn ACL and underwent surgery. He hasn’t fought since then, and will be making his return after 14 months on the shelf in the main event of UFC Fight Night 67 against Thiago Alves.

Alves is someone who has a long history of injuries himself. He also has fought for the UFC Welterweight Championship, coming up on the losing end to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 100 in July 2009. He has fought just seven times in the nearly six years since that fight, going just 4-3 in that span. He missed a year of action following the loss to St. Pierre, then missed over two years of action following a loss to Martin Kampmann in March 2012. He has won two straight fights since returning from the two-year layoff, scoring wins over Seth Baczynski and Jordan Mein. Alves will now compete in his first five-round bout since the title loss to St. Pierre, and his first fight in his native Brazil in over twelve years.

While Condit and Alves have been big name fighters in the 170-pound division for many, many years, both are still relatively young at just 31-years-old. Condit comes into the fight ranked number four in the rankings, while Alves is ranked at number twelve. Both men are exciting fighters that will take a lot of risks in fights, and this is one of the more interesting fights of the year, and an excellent way to cap off a big month of fights in May. Condit may have the ring rust coming in after being out of action for so long, but Alves should know how that feels, and he didn’t show much in the way of ring rust after his two-year layoff. All things being equal, this fight should slightly favor Condit due to his speed and technique, but Alves is still a big welterweight with knockout power and good takedown defense. This should be an exciting five-round fight.

2. Nik Lentz and Charles Oliveira will finally meet in their long-awaited rematch. Who wins?

At least, we hope they will finally meet in their long-awaited rematch. They were scheduled to fight at UFC Fight Night 50 in September, but Oliveira came up ill on the day of the fight after having a brutal weight cut, and the fight was cancelled. Oliveira has been known to have brutal weight cuts since moving down to 145 pounds as it was the second of three times he had missed weight in six scheduled fights. Lentz has been wanting to get his hands on Oliveira since their first fight in June 2011, and if tensions were already high the day before they were supposed to last fight, they will be even higher now.

Lentz and Oliveira first fought at UFC Live 4 in June 2011. It ended in major controversey as Oliveira hit Lentz with a knee to the face as Lentz had his knees firmly planted on the ground. It was missed by the referee, and Oliveira capitalized by locking in a rear-naked choke and forcing Lentz to submit. It was originally a win for Oliveira, but was later changed to a no contest after Lentz filed an appeal. Lentz has been waiting for nearly four years to get his revenge, and he does at a time when he is coming in having won four of five fights since moving down to 145 pounds, with his only loss coming to perennial contender Chad Mendes.

Oliveira is coming in on a hot streak as well having won three straight fights since dropping back-to-back fights to Frankie Edgar and Cub Swanson. Oliveira has been more active of late, fighting three times in 2014, while Lentz has fought just once in 18 months after having his two most recent fights cancelled within 24 hours of them being scheduled to take place. Oliviera has more upside and a better chance to fight for the title, but Lentz has the solid wrestling skills to give Oliveira trouble. Their first fight was going back-and-forth before the unfortuante end, but Oliveira was getting the upper hand, and I expect him to do so again.

3. Can Jussier Formiga or Wilson Reis sneak into the flyweight title picture?
Buried all the way down in the preliminary card is a flyweight bout between Jussier Formiga and Wilson Reis. It is a fight that certainly has a lot more on the line than it’s placement would lead you to believe. Formiga is currently ranked number four at 125 pounds while Reis is ranked at number twelve. Both men have won two straight fights in impressive fashion. Both have seemed to gotten lost in the shuffle of the four flyweight contenders who fought this past Saturday, but they both have the potential to get themselves in the mix when talking about the next title contender.

John Dodson won a decision at UFC 187, but it was in lackluster fashion over Zach Makovsky. He likely is next to fight Demetrious Johnson as Dodson has been marketing himself as the guy who can defeated the only flyweight champion in UFC history despite having lost to Johnson once before. Joseph Benavidez also scored a win, but he has two losses to Johnson. Both of those men have won three straight fights, which will be identical to the winner between Formiga and Reis. Neither Formiga nor Reis have fought Johnson, but Formiga’s two UFC losses have come to Dodson and Benavidez. Reis has yet to fight a ranked flyweight contender until he steps inside the Octagon with Formiga on Saturday.

In order to get themselves in the mix, the winner between Formiga and Reis has to be impressive, and that is going to equal a finish. They have to stand out if either wants to get ahead of Dodson and Benavidez, and perhaps even ahead of Henry Cejudo. Formiga has the better chance of a knockout, but Reis is a tough opponent and has good submission skills. Reis has been really solid since dropping down to the flyweight division, and he has actually won seven of his last eight fights. I actually slightly favor him in this bout, but Formiga is going to be a tough out. Either way, the winner needs a finish if they’re going to be able to sneak themselves into a title fight opportunity in the near future.

4. Should more attention be paid to the bout between Lucas Martins and Mirsad Bektic?

The simple answer is yes. It is opening the preliminary card action on FOX Sports 1, and it is a fight worthy of being on the main card, especially a main card the caliber of this one. This fight was put together on short notice as Bektic was originally scheduled to fight Renato Carneiro, but Carneiro was forced out due to a knee injury in late April. Martins stepped in just a few weeks ago, but he is someone who has taken fights on short notice before as he made his UFC debut on short notice against Edson Barboza. Martins has been playing around with which weight class he is going to fight in, as he has fought at lightweight, featherweight and bantamweight in his five UFC bouts, but he has seemed to find a permanent home at 145 pounds.

Bektic is a big-time prospect at 145 pounds as he is undefeated in his nine career fights, including his last two inside the UFC Octagon. He is coming off a dominant, one-sided win over Paul Redmond in January. Martins is coming in off a loss after being defeated by Darren Elkins at UFC 179 in October, which ended a three-fight win streak. Bektic is a patient fighter who relies on dominant takedowns and wearing opponents out on the ground. Martins had trouble defending the takedowns of Elkins, and Bektic will look to implement a similar gameplan. Martins is a dangerous fighter as 14 of his 15 wins have come by a finish. We have a fighter who is 15-2 against a fighter who is 9-0, and both are solid prospects in the featherweight division, and this will be a quality fight to watch out for.

5. What are some other things to watch for on this fight card?

As is typical with fight cards taking place in Brazil, there are a lot of Brazilians fighting on the card as every fight features a Brazilian fighter. On the main card, K.J. Noons is making the trip to Brazil to take on Alex Oliveira, who is taking his second straight UFC bout on very short notice. Oliveira came close to scoring the upset over Gilbert Burns, but he faded late and gave the fight away in the third round. Noons is more dangerous on his feet than Burns, and it will be a different fight for Oliveira.

Former TUF winner Norman Parke also gets a late notice opponent as Francisco Trinaldo steps in on short notice. Parke was supposed to fight the aforementioned Gilbert Burns, and Trinaldo is the same style of opponent as Burns, but not as well touted on the ground. Another former TUF winner headlines the preliminary card action as Rony “Jason” Bezerra takes on Damon Jackson. Both men are looking to rebound from disappointing losses in their last fight, and Jackson is making his UFC featherweight debut in this fight. He had travel issues earlier in the week, so it will be interesting to see if it affects his weight cut and his performance.
