FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE

We will have live coverage on the site tonight of both the TNA PPV show and the CMLL show. The expectation for the Arena Mexico show tonight is one of the biggest crowds of the year.

For this weekend, it’s basically the usual Raw and Smackdown crews. Chris Jericho is only advertised for Mobile and television, but not the other shows. Randy Orton has the weekend off but will be at television on Tuesday. All the other top stars, including John Cena, are booked for all of the shows.

Chris Hero returned to WWE as Kassius Ohno at the NXT tapings in Winter Park, FL last night. I don’t know if this was taped or not, as it appeared to be dark, but he did have a confrontation with Shinsuke Nakamura.

Nothing new on Kenny Omega past that he isn’t on the February New Japan tour.

Wrestlecon has announced a 3/30 WrestleMania launch party with Ric Flair, Jim Ross and Sting together at 4 p.m. There will be a fan Q&A with Matt Striker as the moderator.  Ross and Flair will also do a meet and greet on 3/31 and Ross ad Sting will do a meet and greet on 4/1.

This is the AXS schedule for the Tokyo Dome matches:

  • 1/13 the entire show will be the Kazuchika Okada vs. Kenny Omega match
  • 1/20 will be Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Tetsuya Naito and the three-way with Tama Tonga & Tanga Roa vs. Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma vs. Tomohiro Ishii & Toru Yano
  • 1/27 will be the Never trios gauntlet match and Katsuyori Shibata vs. Hirooki Goto for the Never open weight title
  • 2/3 will be Cody vs. Juice Robinson, Young Bucks vs. Rocky Romero & Baretta and Kushida vs. Hiromu Takahashi

Obviously to fit into one hour, many of the matches are going to have to be edited for time.

WWE

  • Dean Ambrose is back home in Cincinnati today for the Cavalcade of Customs auto show.
  • Trent Seven, one of the favorites, talks the upcoming UK championship tournament.

UFC

  • Cain Velasquez had minor back surgery Wednesday and it went well. MMA Fighting reported that Velasquez should be back training in one month. This is the second time he’s had the same surgery.

  • MMA Fighting is reporting that Shogun Rua vs. Gian Villante is being negotiated with for the 3/11 show in Fortaleza, Brazil.

  • What Culture Pro Wrestling from yesterday in Liverpool for a show called KirbyMania, because Martin Kirby was the General Manager. This show streamed live on the WCPW YouTube Channel. Doug Williams b Prince Amin, BT Gunn b Zack Gibson. The show opened with Martin Kirby out. Bully Ray Dudley was out next, followed by Drew Galloway who saved Kirby, which set up Galloway defending against Bubba for the WCPW title. But then Paul Robinson & Scotty Wainwright attacked Galloway and Liam Slater & Johnny Moss made the save, setting it up a six-man. Drake NC Joe Hendry when Joseph Conners attacked Hendry to set up a no holds barred match later. Marty Scurll b Gabriel Kidd. Ivelisse b Lana Austin. Joe Coffey b Trent Banks. Lukas Archer & Alex Gracie b Martin Kirby & El Ligero when Kirby walked off on Ligero who got pinned in a comedy match. Cody Rhodes b Zack Sabre Jr. to retain the Internet title. Crowd was 50/50. Rhodes came out to the Bullet Club theme. Rhodes won clean with crossroads and said that he flew 17 hours from Japan to make this show and doesn’t want to be an American part-time import but wants to be a regular at every WCPW show. Best match on the show and the crowd went wild for him making that statement. Paul Robinson & Scotty Wainwright & Bully Ray Dudley b Drew Galloway & Johnny Moss & Liam Slater when Bully Ray hit Galloway with a chain and pinned him. This set up today’s match in Manchester, UK where Galloway defends against Bully Ray. Joe Hendry b Joseph  Conners in a no holds barred match. This appeared to be Conners’ last match or one of his last matches as WWE is not allowing him to work WCPW after next week. (thanks to Nicklas Fechtmann)
  • Notes on the Go Fund Me for Adam Geller.
  • On the show a few nights ago, the deal with Geller is it was Lennie Hardt who did the announcing at his wedding. Howard Finkel did the ring announcing for the birth of his daughter Sydney in 2015. The Finkel announcement is here.
  • A story on Hamilton, ONT comedy rock musician B.A. Johnston starting an on-line petition asking the city to have a statute of Mike Sharpe. This would be the WWF’s Mike Sharpe Jr., not the father, who was also from Hamilton and a far more noteworthy star, but from another generation.
  • Speaking of Mike Sharpe Sr., we’ve got a really good show up on the site talking to Rock Rims who wrote the book “When Wrestling Was Big Time,” about the history of pro wrestling in Northern California.

  • They are pushing 1/27 and 1/28 as Chris Hero’s final shows with Evolve. Hero’s last match will be with Sabre Jr. on 1/28.
  • NWA Smoky Mountain wrestling House party tomorrow night in Kingsport, TN at the Civic Auditorium with The Heatseekers defending the NWA tag team titles against Lance Lude & Rob Killjoy, plus Chase Owens vs. Jordan Kage.
  • Megan Anderson (7-2) vs. Charmaine Tweet (9-5) for the Invicta interim featherweight title has been added to the company’s 1/14 show at the Scottish Rite Temple in Kansas City. The featherweight champion is Cris Cyborg, although with her suspension due to a drug test failure, she should be stripped of the title, but that hasn’t happened yet. The show airs live on Fight Pass.
  • The NWL debuts tomorrow night at 7 p.m. also at the Scottish Rite Temple in Kansas City. They have spent more money than most indies when it comes to signing talent and promoting shows with the idea of running Kansas City and St. Louis regularly this year.
  • Former pro wrestler, actor and bodybuilder Ric Drasin talks Ronda Rousey in WWE.
  • XICW Best in Detroit on 1/14 in Clinton Township, MI at the Imperial House with the Headbangers Zach Gowen, Gregory Iron, Cody Deaner and Johnny Devine.

WRESTLING OBSERVER NEWSLETTER: January 9, 2017 – Ronda Rousey loses potential final fight, NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 11 review

The legacy of Ronda Rousey, the woman who in many ways changed the course of MMA and combat sports and entertainment history, took another unique turn on 12/30. In her return 13 months after suffering her first career loss, she was beaten in just 48 seconds when challenging bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes. Nunes, the hardest puncher in the division, came out landing punches. Rousey showed no head movement or punch defense as she just took one punch after another to the head until the fight was stopped…

Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada may have put on the greatest match in pro wrestling history in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 11 on 1/4 at the Tokyo Dome. The 46:45 classic, coming at the end of a show that lasted five hours and 40 minutes, set New Japan’s all-time record for live foreign streaming viewers, peaking at about 7:30 a.m. Eastern time. A Jim Ross/Josh Barnett commentated version of the match will air on 1/13 on AXS TV, which very well could be the best one hour pro wrestling television show ever…

Some key changes have been made to what was the WrestleMania show, although what those changes are isn’t confirmed. Three of the key bouts remain Brock Lesnar vs. Bill Goldberg, Seth Rollins vs. HHH and Big Show vs. Shaquille O’Neal. Aside from a Raw women’s title match, of which there are at least two different possibilities, everything else is up for grabs. The only other non-regular confirmed as wrestling on the show is Undertaker….

There is a saying that justice delayed is justice denied. That saying may as well have been put on the tombstone of Nancy Argentino back in 1983. Lehigh County Judge Kelly Banach officially dropped all charges against Jimmy Snuka, 73, in the death of Argentino due to ruling that Snuka was mentally incompetent to stand trial…

THURSDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I have a show up right now covering the Tokyo Dome show and the business of UFC 207 among other topics, plus another show with Rock Rims covering his book on the history of pro wrestling in Northern California.

We got some more news on the weekend incidents involving Alberto (Del Rio) Rodriguez and brother Guillermo in Austria. This is from an eye witness who was there for both skirmishes. The version verified the police statements about the incident printed in the new issue and that some of the tabloid coverage was exaggerated. Alberto & Guillermo were actually scheduled to leave and return home for an early morning flight, and be driven at about 2:30 a.m. to Vienna for their flight home after their match on Friday. Alberto then asked promoter Chris Raaber if they could stay an extra day and he’d use his miles to change the flights and so that happened.

There was a fight between Alberto and a 26-year-old Austrian and punches were thrown. Guillermo jumped in to help his brother. It wasn’t a bad fight but Alberto did deliver some damage to the guy, and he was bruised up but not hurt badly. The police were called. At the police station, the two brothers started arguing in Spanish so nobody knew what they were saying or fighting over. The belief was Guillermo was just trying to calm Alberto down and Alberto was yelling at him. Alberto did break the zip-ties and they used ankle shackles, but the shackles were around Alberto’s wrists, not his ankles.

There was a back of a chair broken off and some blood splattered on the wall from Alberto and Guillermo’s fight. Guillermo was not knocked out as per media reports, but he did go to two different hospitals and took a train to the airport while Alberto had already left by cab. (thanks to Markus Gronemann)

Jeff & Karen Jarrett are in Orlando for the TNA tapings, as is Dutch Mantell. Also at the tapings include Brooke Tessmacher, Davey Richards, Angelina Love and Caleb Konley. Tonight’s show will also, at least theoretically, promote a PPV show that takes place on Friday night.

Suzuki Gun and Dragon Lee appeared earlier today at New Year’s Dash at Korakuen Hall. Key matches set up included Kazuchika Okada vs. Minoru Suzuki for the IWGP title, Toru Yano & Tomohiro Ishii vs. Lance Archer & Davey Boy Smith Jr. for the IWGP tag team titles, Tetsuya Naito vs. Michael Elgin for the IC title and Hiromu Takahashi vs. Dragon Lee for the jr. titles.

New Japan World picked up 5,500 new subscribers from the U.S. alone on Tuesday and Wednesday.

We are on verge of getting more feedback to Wrestle Kingdom than any show since either the 2015 or 2014 WrestleMania, depending on the next two days, which is ridiculous when you think about it. But it is almost a lock at this point to break last year’s WrestleMania number.

WWE

  • As noted on the front page, Mark Andrews, whose TNA contract expired a few days ago, has signed with WWE and will be part of the U.K. championship tournament that takes place 1/14 and 1/15 in Blackpool, England.
  • Presale for the 3/12 afternoon house show in Madison Square Garden is going on now and ends at 10 p.m. tomorrow with the code WWEMSG

UFC

  • Mark Hunt has agreed to face Alistair Overeem on the 3/4 show in Las Vegas. Hunt had been turning down fights stating that he wanted it in his contract that if his opponent fails a drug test, he could get their entire purse. UFC wouldn’t agree to it. But Hunt said that at some point, he has to fight to support his family. He’s been outspoken that he felt the $250,000 fine that Brock Lesnar received was far too lenient.
  • A story on betting in the Ronda Rousey vs. Amanda Nunes fight is here.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • New Japan has a press conference in a few hours where they will likely announce the Fantastica Mania tour matches.
  • A quick reminder that tomorrow night’s CMLL show airs live and free on Claro Sports and on paper, it’s an usually strong lineup. I believe New Year’s Dash is also available on the New Japan World site for free. I know it was free earlier today when it was live.
  • First Light, a daily hour-long radio magazine show that airs on 300 stations on its section on famous birthdays, noted that of Jim Ross earlier this week.
  • A story on a survey examining the popularity of various wrestling companies is here.
  • More on the death of UFC studio producer Adam Geller, which we talked about on the radio show last night. It was Lennie Hardt, not Howard Finkel, who did his wedding and we’ve got a ridiculously awesome clip from his wedding is here.
  • A story on the remake of World of Sport wrestling is here.
  •  CZW on 1/14 in Voorhees, NJ with Joe Gacy defending the title against Rickey Shane Page.
  • Cheick Kongo (25-10-2) vs. Oli Thompson (17-9) and Adam Piccolotti (9-0) vs. Brent Primus have been added to the 2/18 Bellator show in San Jose. That’s the show headlined by Fedor Emelianenko vs. Matt Mitrione.
  • AAW on Saturday night in LaSalle, IL at the Knights of Columbus has Sami Callihan vs. John Morrison for the AAW title, ACH vs. Jake Crist for the AAW Heritage title, Rey Fenix vs. Michael Elgin, Silas Young vs. Colt Cabana and more.
  • Ontario independent wrestler Bill Skullion has opened up a wrestling school called the Lucha Slam Championship Wrestling Training Centre in Brantford, ONT at 183 Erie Ave. The grand opening will be Saturday from Noon to 5 p.m. The head instructors will be Skullion and Kaitlin Diemond. They also plan to run monthly shows out of the gym.
  • NWL KC debuts on Saturday night at the Scottish Rite Temple in Kansas City. They will be announcing the new Kansas City championship title, showing the belt and detailing the tournament that will crown the first champion.
  • Carnaval de Lucha on 1/29 at Variety Village in Scarborough, ONT featuring Josh Alexander, Super Smash Brothers, and Sami Callihan.
  • NWX on 1/22 at the CWF Training Facility in St. Catharines, ONT featuring Rene Dupree.
  • Rock Solid Wrestling on 2/20 at 1 p.m. in Wasaga Beach, ONT at the YMCA of Simcoe Muskoka Reeplex

FIGURE FOUR WEEKLY: Figure Four Weekly 12/26/2016: Is WWE violent enough?

A couple years ago, I was working on an article for Fighting Spirit Magazine about how lopsided WWE was in terms of having too many babyfaces and not enough heels, as well as the company’s heel/face divide in general. One of the people I interviewed for the article was Kevin Sullivan, who spoke at length about how he felt that WWE heels were inherently limited because they couldn’t “commit a violent act” due to WWE’s “PG” content restrictions… Subscribers click here to continue.

Raw is tonight in Tampa with Braun Strowman vs. Sami Zayn in a last man standing match announced plus the return of Bill Goldberg. There is no Smackdown house show on Monday night so it actually would make sense for Smackdown talent to be on the show teasing the Rumble match. It also would have made a good night for the Slammys since most Mondays you can’t have the Smackdown talent at the show.

Smackdown and 205 Live are Tuesday night from Jacksonville. The Miz vs. Dean Ambrose for the IC title is on Tuesday.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will have a show tonight talking Raw and the latest news. You can also send questions to tonight’s show to [email protected].

Paige and Alberto Del Rio were at the Raw show earlier today. Del Rio came to pick her up. She was backstage being talked with about how her recovery from her neck surgery is going.

Regarding the contract issues with Spectrum Cable and NBC, where the contract expired on 12/31 and the sides were apart in talks, both sides are still carrying the shows right now to keep service uninterrupted, so Raw will be available in the same amount of the country as usual.

Steve Corino and Kevin Kelly are in Japan to announce the New Japan events, which start late tonight after Raw with the matches at the Fan Axxess show at Differ Ariake in Tokyo. The Tokyo Dome show starts at 2:30 a.m. Eastern time late Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. The press conference airs starting at 10 p.m. Eastern time tonight on New Japan World.

SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will have a Wrestling Observer Radio show tonight talking the weekend news plus, with no major show to cover, we’ll be taking a lot of questions that you can send to [email protected].

Undertaker and Shawn Michaels will be on Raw on 1/9, which will probably be promoted hard on tomorrow night’s show.

There was a ton of interest in the UFC. On Friday, Cody Garbrandt was the No. 7 most searched for term in the country with more than 200,000 searches. Ronda Rousey was the most searched for term over the past few days other than New Year’s Eve related searches, with more than 10 million. That would be among the highest in history.

The World of Sport rating for the wrestling show yesterday was 1.25 million viewers and a 7.3 market share. The number isn’t high enough to guarantee the show gets turned into a series, nor low enough to guarantee that it doesn’t. It’s a lot lower than ITV did in the time slot the week before, but they were down all night, probably due to it being New Year’s Eve.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Jon Fitch, after retaining his WSOF welterweight title, beating Jake Shields yesterday at the Theater in Madison Square Garden, talked like it could be his last fight. He noted that he’d like to continue, but he’s got a bulging disc plus there was an MRI of his brain that was something concerning that he needs to follow up on. If you DVR’d the show, the Justin Gaethje lightweight title win over Luiz Firmino was a hell of a fight. I wouldn’t call it a fight of the year candidate because of the ending. It was really strong in the second and third round, but Firmino couldn’t see out of his right eye after the third round, wanted to continue, but the doctor stopped it. Fans were chanting to let him fight, but the eye was swollen badly and it was clearly the only decision possible.
  • Coverage of the New Japan Festival, which is similar to WWE Fan Axxess, and will include live matches, starts at 10 p.m. Eastern time on Monday night. The Tokyo Dome show starts at 2:30 a.m. late Tuesday night.
  • CMLL has a major show on Friday night, its last big show before the top talent goes to Japan for Fantastica Mania, with three singles matches, Rey Cometa vs. Cavernario, Volador Jr. vs. Mephisto and Valiente vs. Ultimo Guerrero.  It’s very much unlike how the traditional promotion runs so it’ll be very interesting to see why the change was made.

AAW Unstoppable

  • Friday night in Merrionette Park, IL before 690 fans: Homicide b Conor Braxton (Scarlett Bordeaux, who was on Raw on Monday as the opponent of Nia Jax, was Braxton’s manager), Jake & Dave Crist b Markus Crane & Kongo Kong, Matt Riddle b Davey Richards (this may have been their first ever meeting), Michael Elgin won four-way over Mat Fichett, Paco Gonzalez and Dezmond Xavier, Drew Galloway b Jeff Cobb, Pentagon Jr. b Chris Hero, Colt Cabana & Chuck Taylor b Davey Vega & Silas Young, Heidi Lovelace b Kimber Lee, ACH b AR Fox to win the AAW Heritage title, Sami Callihan b Rey Fenix to retain the AAW title.
  • In the Hero vs. Pentagon match, Hero was whipped into the turnbuckle and one of the pieces of the ring post broke and then the top rope broke at the 2:00 mark of the match. The two continued to wrestle while they tried to repair the top rope but it deflated the crowd  They did fix the top rope between matches and neither guy was hurt. The two had to improvise without a top rope. Pentagon won with the package piledriver and the two men raised each others’ hands. Hero talked about the ring breaking and said it was amazing. He thanked the fans for supporting the promotion and supporting him even with his lack of an appealing physical appearance. He said that he’s never had a bad match in AAW and he’s never seen a bad AAW show and it’s his Midwest home. He said he’s been asked a lot of questions, but right now still doesn’t have an answer and thanked the fans for his ability to have made a living in pro wrestling.
  • Lovelace did an interview and noted it was her last show with the promotion (she and Kimber Lee are both headed to WWE) and thanked Danny Daniels for giving her the chance to compete and that whatever success she gets in wrestling was because of AAW. She was fighting back tears and thanking people for her being able to call AAW her home promotion. For Lovelace and Lee, it was both of their last indie shows.
  • Callihan noted it was Fenix’s birthday and the crowd started singing Happy Birthday to him. But then he gave Fenix a low blow and laid him out with a belt shot. Homicide made the save and challenged the Killer Cult to a cage match on 1/20. Next show is 1/7 in LaSalle, IL with Callihan vs. John Morrison for the AAW title, Rey Fenix vs. Michael Elgin and Colt Cabana vs. Silas Young.  On the 1/20 show in Merrionette Park, it will be Silas Young’s last AAW appearance plus Galloway, Eddie Kingston, Andrew Everett, Matt Sydal, Brian Cage and Abyss appear.
  • There was a controversial situation with language used by Homicide in a promo on the show. Keith Lipinski from the promotion noted that they had no clue words like that would be used in their promotion. They give the talent bullet points but let them cut their own promo. He said Homicide did apologize to the AAW staff immediately after he got through the curtain, and also apologized on Twitter saying he made a huge lapse of judgment. Lipinski said that the promo did alienate fans and feels racial or homophobic slurs have no place on their shows.
  • Danny Daniels of the promotion wrote a post about the subject.

FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will have a show tonight covering tonight’s UFC show as well as the latest pro wrestling news. If you’ve got questions for the show you can send them to [email protected].

Ronda Rousey was the second most searched term in the U.S. yesterday with 500,000 searches. That is very unusual for a UFC fighter the day before, but not for Rousey. Personal searches for Rousey are always high and don’t necessarily indicate a gigantic buy rate, but it would be a good sign. A big issue is that so many people think the show is tomorrow night.

Live tickets are just about sold out. That would be ahead of the other shows at the T Mobile Arena, but the gate will be much lower since they were charging significantly less than the other shows at the arena. Rousey was cheered louder than anyone at the weigh-ins and Amanda Nunes was booed more than anyone else. Dominick Cruz was also booed pretty heavily but he’s pretty much playing arrogant heel to precision.

A major story involving the New York area is that Charter Communications (Spectrum Cable) and NBC Universal are in a dispute. As of right now, if a new deal isn’t reached by midnight tomorrow, when the contract expires, then 16 million homes around the country, including much of New York, will be without not only NBC but MSNBC, Bravo, E!, USA and Syfy. I’ve seen some stuff to rally people against the cable company and in pushing shows people won’t be able to see, they have mentioned Raw, Smackdown ad Total Divas. Usually these things get worked out because the contract would expire before Sunday Night Football which is a huge show.

There is a weird story as a Go Fund Me was set up for John Yurnet, who wrestled on Tuesday night’s 205 Live show against Mustafa Ali and apparently blew his knee out. He’s trying to raise $10,000 in medical expenses for an MRI and surgery. As of this morning they had raised $1,995. It’s weird because WWE usually covers injuries to talent, but Yurnet is not under a WWE contract, although he wrestled in a WWE ring. There is also a lot of talk that Yurnet was injured before the match and not on the first spot of the match as was first said.

World Series of Fighting has the biggest show in its history tomorrow with the main card on NBC in the afternoon. WFAN in New York, the biggest sports radio station in the country, will also be covering the event.

WWE

There was a brief injury scare with Bo Dallas last night in Boston. The report was that they stopped his match early and the ref gave an “X” sign, but he seemed okay after because his gimmick all week is that after losing in a multiple person match, he then challenges anyone from the back to come out and refuses to leave the ring. Big Show then knocks him out. And after the match was stopped, he did recover and issued the challenge spot.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • New Japan announced that Masahiro Chono would be doing Japanese commentary for Wrestle Kingdom 11.
  • Kurt Angle will wrestle on 3/3 for Northeast Wrestling in Waterbury, CT.
  • There will be a lot of New Japan World live events this week. There will be three matches from Differ Ariake on Tuesday (late Monday U.S. time) as well as New Year’s Dash, which often has some of the best angles because it’s setting up the new year, which will be at 4:30 a.m. early Thursday morning Eastern time.
  • Beyond Wrestling Party Animals show last night in Providence, RI before a sellout crowd even with WWE in Boston head-to-head: Rex Lawless b Maxwell Jacob Feinstein, Warbeard Hanson b Scotty Slade, VSK & Dorian Graves won four-way over Anthony Green & Big Daddy Beluga, Davey Cash & Kris Pyro and Ace Romero & Xavier Bell, Brian Milonas b Travis Flip Gordon, Chris Hero b Keith Lee (said to be ****+ and best thing on the show), Matt Riddle & Chuck O’Neill (another former UFC fighter) b Bill Carr & Dan Barry (Barry walked out on Carr after the match), Pinkie Sanchez b Tracy Williams (bad match), Dan Maff & Monsta Mack b Chris Dickinson & Jaka, Kimber Lee b Donovan Dijak (Kimber Lee’s farewell to Beyond as she’s going to WWE).  After the match, Lee gave a farewell speech and Hero came out. JT Dunn then hit an elbow from behind to her and Hero laid her out with a piledriver. Veda Scott & Sonya Strong b Jordynne Grace & Karen Q. There was a problem here as Karen pinned Scott and the ref counted three and the bell rang. Everyone looked confused and they all continued the match like it never happened. John Silver b Joey Janela in a very good match. David Starr b Jonathan Gresham to keep the wXw (German promotion) Shotgun title. Donovan Dijak & Mikey Webb won four-way over Hero & Dunn. This match went 30 minutes and started at almost midnight. The crowd was tired. Kimber Lee interfered to help Dijak & Webb win. Kimber Lee then did her farewell speech. She never mentioned WWE by name. But she hoped the crowd would follow her on her new journey on a new stage. The promoter gave her a framed photo of herself with the Beyond logo (thanks to Patrick Tobin).
  • Alberto El Patron and brother Guillermo as El Hijo de Dos Caras arrived Wednesday in Austria for a show today in Leoben. They held a press conference yesterday at the Schwarzenegger Museum in Graz (where Schwarzenegger is from). Alberto then attended the local hockey team’s game and had a seminar yesterday. Paige was not on this trip even though he did say on Instagram a few days earlier she was coming. Chris Raaber, the promoter, faces Joe Doering, coming back from brain cancer, in the main event for their title. More than 600 tickets were sold in advance which is a great number for a small Austrian promotion. (thanks to Markus Gronemann)

Ronda Rousey will historically be considered one of the most important fighters in the history of her sport. But no matter what she has done before, a big part of how she will be viewed in the future will depend on Friday’s fight with Amanda Nunes. A win, making her two-time bantamweight champion, will make the narrative that she came back from a devastating defeat and layoff to regain her championship…

Right now when it comes to WrestleMania while there are a lot of rumors and directions being stated, there are only three matches locked in, which are Brock Lesnar vs. Bill Goldberg, HHH vs. Seth Rollins and Big Show vs. Shaquille O’Neal. John Cena vs. Undertaker is a probable, but Vince McMahon was not locked on it…

Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada go into the Tokyo Dome on 1/4 with almost an unreal amount of pressure. In some people’s eyes, unless they have the match of the year, because expectations are so high, there will be a measure of disappointment. It’s very rare you have a match like this on such a big stage. I think Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat had that in all three of their national airing matches in 1989…

A series of flukes may have established an inadvertent new holiday tradition. The days of the big Christmas wrestling spectaculars in pro wrestling are long gone. And in the past, Christmas night has been tough and Christmas Eve has been death for ratings when it comes to Raw and SmackDown… Subscribers click here to continue.

THURSDAY NEWS UPDATE

SmackDown beat Raw in the ratings this week, although that story feels way overplayed. Raw went against the highest rated NFL Monday Night game of the season and SmackDown featured the return of John Cena and a show advertised with three title matches, so by all rights it should have won handily.

Jay Lethal and Christopher Daniels both signed new deals with ROH. Kyle O’Reilly is the name everyone is talking about. He has not signed a new deal at this point.

Regarding something we got a lot of questions about Tuesday and Wednesday, Paige is still under contract to WWE.

One of the potentially biggest events, if it is a success and leads to a series, takes place 12/31 on ITV in the U.K. with a two-hour World of Sport wrestling special featuring some world title bouts, a ladder match, and talent including Grado, Dave Mastiff and Davey Boy Smith Jr., plus Jim Ross will be announcing the show.

This was the Johny Hendricks interview about challenging people to cut 20 pounds just prior to his missing weight today.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight for Wrestling Observer Radio talking the latest news as well as covering Raw. You can also send questions to the show to [email protected].

Sorry to report the death of retired Lt Col. Eduardo Garcia yesterday. Garcia is the father of Lilian Garcia. Eduardo Garcia had been battling cancer for some time and the key reason Garcia left WWE was to be with her father as he was battling the disease that they were told was terminal.

The New York Times today has a story on WWE trying to make it in China.

The San Francisco Chronicle has a Cow Palace history story. Both Roller Derby and wrestling get mentioned, although not the best mention for either. The Roller Derby mention on Ann Calvello’s debut was seven years off, and while history has remembered her after her death as the biggest star, and she was the most popular Bombers women skater in the late 50s, the most popular and biggest stars were Charlie O’Connell and Joan Weston and the heyday were the championship games from 1960 to probably 1973. The Battle Royal reference was after the peak as the heyday of Cow Palace wrestling would have been 1961 to 1963, the biggest Battle Royals probably 1971-74, and the biggest event ever really when it comes to history would be the Thesz vs. Nomellini matches in the 50s because those were major sports events in the city.

SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight for Wrestling Observer Radio talking the latest news. With no major shows over the weekend, we’ll be doing a lot of answering of questions so you can send questions to the show to [email protected]. We’ll also be talking awards and much more.

One of the big stories, which we’ve covered, is that Ronda Rousey is doing no media for Friday’s show. There are no public workouts nor is there a midweek press conference. Amanda Nunes is also doing no media, and with Velasquez vs. Werdum out, that means almost all the media has to be carried by Dominick Cruz and Cody Garbrandt. That would be a risk under normal circumstances but given the show is on a Friday and not a Saturday, Rousey not doing media is going to hurt that much more. Essentially she’s gone from being the person most interested in how her numbers are, since she gets paid based on them, to someone who clearly doesn’t care all that much about them.

Until news broke that he was off of UFC 207, Cain Velasquez and his camp didn’t even know he was off of the show and he was still training as late as yesterday. UFC had contacted Junior Dos Santos to take the fight and Fabricio Werdum turned Dos Santos down as an opponent, so the show will proceed with ten fights.

Last night’s UFC show on FOX did 4,689,000 viewers based on the fast nationals. Those numbers were through the roof based on lack of competition. This will end up as either the second or third largest overall audience to watch a UFC television show in history, and the fight of the year candidate with Doo Ho Choi vs. Cub Swanson will rank among the most watched MMA fights in history. For a comparison, last week’s live show with Paige VanZant vs. Michelle Waterson averaged 3,178,000 viewers and it was viewed as a gigantic success. The show was a tape of four fights from 12/10 in Toronto.

In showing how much social media means, it was so dead last night regarding that show, it was unbelievable. Yet more people watched it than any episode of Raw, Smackdown, or UFC show or anything of the sort in years.

TripleMania has been announced for August 26, 2017, headlined by Dr. Wagner Jr. vs. Psycho Clown in a mask vs. mask match.

FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE

Manuel “Mocho” Cota, a top heel in EMLL in the 80s and 90s, passed away yesterday at the age of 62. He had suffered a fall in his home and a fractured skull. He also had a run with AAA in the late 90s and was still wrestling and promoting as late as this year. There will almost surely be a moment of silence at tonight’s Arena Mexico show for him. He was a former Mexican national and NWA world welterweight champion when those belts meant a lot.

The Los Angeles Times has a story on the autopsy of Chyna.

Hall of Famer Atsushi Onita suffered a broken leg in a match in Takamatsu earlier today. Onita & Masa Fuchi held the All-Asia tag titles with All Japan and are likely to have to vacate the titles. Onita is expected out of action for two months.

ROH today announced Dragon Lee vs. Will Ospreay for the 3/4 show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan.

Here is a Mayo Clinic study comparing the health issues of people who played high school football with those who didn’t, as far as if that led to problems when they got older.
