FIGURE FOUR WEEKLY: 4/10/2017: ESPN’s complicated relationship with WWE

As Mauro Ranallo’s absence from the SmackDown broadcast booth nears a month and may become permanent, concerns about the legitimacy of ESPN’s coverage of WWE have again been raised. Singling out ESPN from a group of mainstream media outlets that provide similarly toothless reporting probably isn’t entirely fair, but the prominence of ESPN and their expanding relationship with WWE has made it so they will be criticized every time they fail to give a story that is critical of WWE the attention that it deserves.

WON BACK ISSUE: March 20, 2000: WWF to leave USA network, ECW Living Dangerously review, more

The landscape of American pro wrestling may undergo major changes within the next month. Starting off, WWF officially gave notice to the USA Network on 3/1 that it is cancelling its contract with them effective in September when the new TV season starts. This isn’t necessarily as big as it sounds, but most feel it is bigger. The WWF’s deal for Raw, Livewire and Superstars expired in September 2001, but WWF has the right to get out of the deal in September 2000 by giving the network six months notice and USA Network has the right to match any offer.

FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE

Dwayne Johnson is one of the stars in The Fate of The Furious, which is expected to top $100 million in its opening weekend. It was actually released first last night. Fast 7 opened at $150 million but stats used to predict opens have shown this one trailing that, although most predictions have ranged from a $100 million to $125 million weekend.

For the WWE weekend, for shows tonight, tomorrow and Saturday, it will be like the old brands, with the stuff that had been advertised appearing, such as Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn and Charlotte on the Raw shows and Bray Wyatt and Dean Ambrose on the Smackdown shows. However, on Monday, they will use the new rosters, so Wyatt, Ambrose, Miz, etc. are all on Raw in Columbus, OH, and Owens, Zayn and Charlotte are all going to be working in Bowling Green, KY, and then in Louisville.

Matt & Jeff Hardy are also scheduled for all the Raw shows this weekend. Shinsuke Nakamura and The Revival are working NXT this weekend but will join the Smackdown and Raw tours respectively on Monday night.

With the exception of John Cena and Nikki Bella, who aren’t scheduled for months, all the top stars are booked this weekend. Chris Jericho is scheduled the entire tour. Roman Reigns is listed every night as well, which is surprising given the nature of the angle on Monday. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be there, but he was still advertised as of this morning.

The WWE has initiated settlement talks with Mauro Ranallo’s representatives. It was pretty much incumbent that was going to have to happen.

WWE

  • The company’s quarterly report will be on 5/4. That will cover the first three months of the year, prior to WrestleMania. The report that would cover WrestleMania wouldn’t come out until late July or early August.
  • They announced a 5/28 house show in August, GA for the Raw crew.

  • Cuban Heat vs. Lee Hunter

A.J. Lee talks whether she’ll wrestle again while promoting her book. Highlights from the interview:

There has been an increased emphasis put on women’s wrestling in recent years. It’s been called the “women’s revolution” with the “Divas” title having been stripped away. Although it officially happened after you left, it seems to me that you were a big part in getting female performers to where they are now. The women are basically on par with the guys now.

  • That makes my heart swell. That’s all I ever wanted for the industry while I was there and for all the wonderful women after I was gone. There are a lot of really great girls who are still there that I was really fortunate enough to work with or have their tryout matches. I just want the best for them and I’m so happy that they’re getting their time. That’s all that we could ever hope or fight for. I’m so proud of them. I hope they’re also getting paid as much as the guys since they’re seen as just as important. I hope that they’re also getting paid because that’s half the battle, honestly.

Wrestling’s old adage: never say never. I’m sure you are asked this all the time so let me be the one millionth and one person to ask you this. Will we ever see AJ Lee back in a wrestling ring?

  • I never would say that because I’ve personally said never to things before and done them. But I am so happy where I am right now and I feel like I had such a pitch perfect career that I would be nervous about tarnishing that. I feel like it’s kind of full-circle and perfect for exactly what I wanted. But who knows?

One of the things that really stood out to me was one particular fight between your parents. You wrote that you heard a gurgling sound and then your mother scream that she was being choked. And here you are as this little girl and you bust through the door and thrown your tiny body on top of her as your father holds a TV over his head. He was ready to send it crashing down on your mother. The amount of bravery that must have taken is incredible. Were you even thinking at that point or were you just reacting?

  • I think so much of my childhood is just reacting to whatever situation you’re in; it was like this is what you need to do in the moment. You need to step up in every moment and just take care of yourself and everyone around you. My role in my family in my young age, probably way too young, was to kind of parent everybody even though I was the youngest in my family. I want to go back and hug that little girl. It’s hard for me to re-read those chapters… I know that I’m not alone. I’m sure that a lot of kids have been in that type of situation. Getting that stuff out there was a way of letting go and healing and hopefully there’s somebody else that realizes you shouldn’t have to be that strong at that age. That was a tough one to write.

I was thinking about the documentary UFC did on your husband, CM Punk. He was training for his first fight and you were so reluctant to go and watch him. Was some of that reluctance because of your experiences growing up and you didn’t want to be surrounded by violence anymore or was it more that you just didn’t want to see your husband get his face punched in or something like that?

  • (laughs) I think it’s a little bit of both and that’s super perceptive of you. I’ve gravitated toward action that is more of the superhero romanticized variety. Superheroes and comic books and pro wrestling where the fear is taken out of it because there’s a levity involved. With UFC it’s so real and so violent that it’s hard for me to even watch. The pay-per-views will be on in my house and I’ll pay for it and I’ll support it, but I can’t really sit down and watch it. It’s hard for me, especially with my husband. For someone who beat up people for a living I’m pretty queasy when it comes to violence for sure.

THURSDAY NEWS UPDATE

An update on the situation with Katsuyori Shibata. Unfortunately the news appears to be very bad and that the injuries are not storyline. This is not 100 percent because there are many situations historically where this could be just storyline or a cover for something else, but it appears this is the case and that a combination of dehydration and the trauma of the legitimately skull-on-skull head-butt hospitalized him and at this point it is believed he will never be cleared to wrestle. He is currently in the hospital and is awake, can carry on a conversation, has some memories of the match itself. He initially had some right side paralysis but that is getting better.

There is a major story that affects independent promotions and WWE as well who made revenue from YouTube. By doing this, almost all wrestling channels will be losing virtually all ad revenue, which in cases of companies that pushed product consumption on YouTube as a significant part of their business plan, that’s a major hit.

A collection of John Layfield hazing and bullying stories are here.

ESPN is taken to task on WWE coverage of real stories.

Kevin Eck talks to Justin Roberts on the JBL story.

They had DDP on last week and he seemed to get mad when LeBatard tried to press him on a fight he had with Scott Steiner in the 90s. (thanks to Jeff Parker)

WON BACK ISSUE: March 13, 2000: Beyond the Mat controversy, New York Daily News stories on wrestling deaths and drugs, more

The controversy over the movie “Beyond the Mat” grew this past week when pressure tactics from the WWF caused the USA Network, UPN and Cris Craft Communications to all ban any advertising on any of their programs for the film. While some were surprised at the lengths Vince McMahon would go to attempt to bury the movie, it has been clear for some time by anyone who understands the “with us or against us” and no in between philosophy of McMahon, that he felt the movie wasn’t “with us.”

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back covering Raw as well as the latest wrestling news. You can send questions for tonight’s show to [email protected].

WWE and DAZN in Japan have reached a deal where both Raw & Smackdown will air live in Japan with Japanese commentary for the first time on a streaming service. Raw airs in Tokyo at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning and Smackdown airs at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning. Part of the timing of this deal is Shinsuke Nakamura being on the main roster. DAZN will also pick up the weekly WWE Experience, WWE Bottomline and WWE This Week shows at some point. DAZN in a sports streaming service available in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Japan, but only the Japanese version will have WWE right now.

Regarding the situation with Katsuyori Shibata and surgery that was reported on the New Japan web site for a subdural hematoma suffered in the match with Kazuchika Okada, that may be storyline to put over the brutality of the match.

There were two WWE bullying stories I’ve seen in the mainstream press. The Huffington Post has one, and Vice has another.

Tonight is the first part of the “Superstar Shakeup” which continues tomorrow. Apollo Crews has already been announced as moving to Raw. For what it’s worth, those who are backstage include Crews, Mickie James, Rhyno and Elias Samson. Almost the entire crew is booked to be in Boston tomorrow. There is talent that has been told where they are going and other talent that will be finding out the moment it happens.

For fans of old Mid South Wrestling, the WWE Network has added more new shows this week and now every show from December 1981 through January 1983 is up, in order, so it actually can be watched as is. That was some of the best episodic television of its era, or really, any era. That would be the Junkyard Dog heyday but before the real boom in 1984. (thanks to Chris Aiken)

WWE

  • Glenn Jacobs (Kane) is expected to announce tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Sweet P’s BBQ and Soul House at 3725 Maryville Pike in Knoxville that he’s running for mayor of Knox County.
  • The latest in the monster Fast & Furious franchise, “Fate of the Furious,” opens on Friday with Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel as stars. This will be one of the biggest movies of the year, if not all-time as their last one was among the highest grossing movies in history.
  • WWE Studios filed a lawsuit against BitTorrent in a copyright infringement claim in U.S. District Court in Connecticut on Thursday alleging they distributed their movie “Eliminators.” They are asking for $150,000 per infringement plus court costs in a jury trail.
  • Several news outlets including USA Today, the Indianapolis Star and Pro Wrestling Sheet have reported that Ric Flair was kicked out of a bar, the Deck at the Gas House in Fort Wayne, or calling a bartender a “fat ass,” when she poured a new drink into his old drink. This was caught by someone’s camera phone and because of Flair’s celebrity status got covered in a lot of places. The Indianapolis star reported that Flair was only there for a few minutes before being kicked out.
  • Nia Jax got positive points for posing in a bathing suit on The Today Show web site.

UFC

  • Chris Weidman will be protesting the handling of his match with Gegard Mousasi to the New York State Athletic Commission. It was a really weird situation. It was really the first case of the new two hands down needed instead of one down needed played a part in a major fight, and it just led to a terribly confusing thing. Plus, in New York, the rules are that you are not allowed to use replays to change a referee’s decision, but in fact, people who looked at the replay did play a part in changing Dan Miragliotta’s decision. Anyway, one thing clear is that every state should allow referees to immediately look at replays when it comes to close calls like that. The doctor took heat, but you can’t blame the doctor. There was a possibility that Weidman suffered a concussion from the key knee, and whether he wanted to continue to fight, the doctor can’t risk the idea that someone who may have had a concussion should be able to continue.
  • Conor McGregor causing a commotion by pretending to be Okada was covered in the Mirror.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • All Pro Wrestling announced today that for their show headlined by a Rumble Battle Royal and the first California based promotion to run at the Cow Palace on 5/6, that Pat Patterson will be the special guest. Patterson created the Royal Rumble and also won the final Roy Shire Cow Palace Battle Royal in the building in 1981. He was the area’s biggest star from 1972-77 and one of the three or four biggest stars in the history of Northern California territorial wrestling.
  • The TV show “Strange Inheritance” on the Fox Business Channel tonight at 9 p.m. and Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. has a show regarding Roller Derby superstar Ann Calvello in her will giving all of her memorabilia to Jim Fitzpatrick, a former skater. It’s a 30 minute show that is two years in the making.
  • CWA from Saturday night in North Little, Rock, AR before 440 fans: Barrett Brown b Matt Taylor, Michael Barry b Roosevelt, OMGs b Greg Anthony & Dale Wylde, Tim Storm b Matt Riviera, Americas & Jim Duggan b Genetic Perfection. All net profits went to a family with six children in the area who lost everything they owned in a house fire.

  • The TV show “Billions” last night had a scene where one of the characters was given a 1998 Hell in a Cell poster signed by Undertaker and Mankind. When trying to find out who gave it to him, another character on the show said, “Everything after Sammartino vs. Zbyszko is bullsh*t.” The first character protested and said how Macho Man was great and then brought up Stan Stasiak and the heart punch. (thanks to Joe Puccio)
  • NCW Collision Course on 4/15 in Ste-Therese, Quebec.
  • On Saturday night, Vickie Guerrero returned to pro wrestling as the manager of The Brooklyn Brawler in a match for Ultimate Championship Wrestling in Bay City, MI: She was there to counteract TK Parker, the manager of Gavin Quinn, who wrestled Brawler. Results were: Black Bushido won over Sheldon Jean and Kurt Hendrix, Soultaker b Harlem Jackson, Jon E. SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

We have a major audio show that has gotten a lot of feedback on the site today. Bryan and I will be back tonight with Wrestling Observer radio. We’ll be covering Sakura Genesis and doing a heavy mailbag show. You can send questions to [email protected] although because of all the news of the past week, the preference will be for questions regarding news of the past week.

Regarding last night’s show, when talking about Be a Star, Be a Star is actually a WWE organization and not a separate organization, but has a number of different partners that are outside of WWE.

Last night was quite strange with the Anthony Johnson retirement after his loss to Daniel Cormier. The one take I got from it, when it was brought up how well he did at 205 and how he should have never cut to 170 was Johnson saying he had to because he couldn’t beat the guys at 185 at that time. His problem seems that he didn’t think he could beat people that he actually could beat. But no matter what is said, a Cormier vs. Jon Jones fight is inevitable this year. Cormier did compare himself to Roman Reigns, even though he doesn’t get booed anywhere near like Reigns, noting how badly Reigns was booed on Monday and people just do what they want to do and you can’t control it.

The Kazuchika Okada vs. Katsuyori Shibata match earlier today was something. I’m not a fan of the head-butt Shibata threw, but other than that, this was very similar to a Misawa vs. Kawada match. The work of Okada this year with Omega, Suzuki, Tiger Mask W and Shibata is on par with any first four plus months of anyone you’ll see. The big take on all this is Okada has won every match clean, and in every case, the loser has gotten over more just by being in the match. That’s not the easiest thing to do. Naito did a tremendous job of making Juice Robinson a star in one night and it was a simple booking masterpiece given the crowd reactions to Robinson challenging for the title. It’s textbook of protecting top guys and having them lose rarely, but when they do, it’s not just my turn/your turn but it signals significant importance. Shibata was taken to the hospital on a stretcher, although that is likely storyline.

New Japan has a press conference at 3 a.m. Eastern and midnight Pacific to announce its next two major events on 4/29 and 5/3. Matches that are expected to be split among those two shows are Okada vs. Bad Luck Fale for the IWGP title, Hiromu Takahashi vs. Ricochet for the IWGP jr. title, Hirooki Goto vs. Minoru Suzuki for the Never title, Tetsuya Naito vs Juice Robinson for the IC title, War Machine vs. Tanga Roa & Tama Tonga for the IWGP tag titles and Yoshinobu Kanemaru & Taichi vs. Rocky Romero & Baretta for the IWGP jr. tag title.

UFC had about 700,000 searches over the weekend which is above usual for a PPV that you don’t expect to do monster numbers. But it’s not necessarily telling because there were 200,000 searches for Pearl Gonzalez based on the idea that her fight was pulled because they wouldn’t let her fight due to having implants. That changed quickly and she fought as planned, but lost. UFC was the fifth most searched for term

Prediction results from last night:

  • 3-2 Mike Sawyer, Josh Nason, Steve Juon, Ryan Frederick, John Pollock
  • 2-3 David Bixenspan, Frontrow Brian, Paul Fontaine
  • 1-4 Me and Mike Sempervive

WWE

  • Most of the Raw roster was told that they will be working Tuesday in Boston at the Smackdown tapings. Everyone will be there aside from Brock Lesnar, Bill Goldberg and John Cena this week for the brand switches, most of which are being kept secret, including from the talent.
  • There will be a new Ride Along episode this week with The Miz, Maryse, Alexa Bliss and Carmella.
  • Here is an article remembering back to John Layfield.

The attempt is to raise $10,000 for production.

FIGURE FOUR WEEKLY: 4/3/2017: Memorable moments make Wrestlemania 33

Despite the match quality and show length being similar, WrestleMania 33 was much better than its predecessor. That’s largely due to just having more memorable moments than WrestleMania 32. The Undertaker’s retirement is what will define this year’s show, even if he clearly held on too long. Jim Ross’ return to the WWE broadcast booth was a nice touch and necessary to stress the magnitude of Undertaker’s final match. The Hardys coming back brought genuine excitement while making the Raw tag team title ladder match feel like a big deal. And John Cena proposing to Nikki Bella at least gave reason for what was a nothing mixed tag after such a great build.

FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE

We’ll have a lot more on the Superstar Shakeup on tomorrow night’s show after UFC, as well as more thoughts on the Mauro Ranallo situation.

Ranallo deleted all references to being a WWE announcer on his Twitter account. As of right now, he is under contract to WWE through 8/12.

John Layfield may have put his foot in his mouth this morning. When asked about Justin Roberts and when they stole Roberts’ passport while he was in Europe, Layfield said, “I won’t answer net rumors, but I didn’t take Justin Roberts passport. Could have been anyone. He was hated by the whole crew. He’s an idiot.” In an article hours later, John Hennigan (Mundo) was quoted as saying that on that trip, Layfield asked he and Joey Mercury to steal Roberts’ passport. Hennigan talked in the article about how he knew if he did it he’d no longer be bullied, but he wouldn’t do it because he wouldn’t have wanted something like that done to him, and figured he got heat for not doing it. There’s more on that in this Deadspin story about Layfield. Forbes has a story on Layfield as well.

Michael Paris (DJZ) wrote about his surgery in Mexico that it went well, that they fixed his colon (which was ruptured in taking a 450 splash in a match Wednesday night in Mexico City) and will make a full recovery in a few weeks. He said he’ll have to take time off from the ring but was scared at one point that his career was over. He said he’s not happy to have a sweet scar on his stomach, but he’s glad to be alive.

This was a crazy day for UFC with the off-again on-again Cynthia Cavillo vs. Pearl Gonzalez fight. It’s the first time anyone has ever heard of a commission attempting to block a fighter from fighting due to having breast implants, and then backed off on it. The Daniel Cormier weight situation was also crazy but at the root of the issue is that Cormier admitted having a tough weight-cut, which certainly becomes a factor in the fight tomorrow.

For TV this week, Chris Jericho is being advertised for Raw so he’s evidently not gone yet. Brock Lesnar is not scheduled for Raw and obviously Bill Goldberg is gone for now. John Cena and Nikki Bella are gone for now and won’t be on Smackdown this week.

WWE

  • Glenn “Kane” Jacobs is expected to announce on 4/11 officially that he’s running for Mayor of Knox County, TN. He will be running as a Republican as opposed to a Libertarian.

THURSDAY NEWS UPDATE

Michael Paris (Impact’s DJZ) was injured last night at The Crash show in Mexico City. He has undergone major surgery due to issues with his colon rupturing and internal bleeding stemming from that. He was in great pain. He took a 450 splash in a match with Rey Horus, Laredo Kid, Mr. 450, Septimo Dragon and Ultimo Ninja and couldn’t continue. He’s doing better today and the surgery was successful. Sexy Star was also apparently injured an in great pain and taken out of a title match. Not sure if that was just a way for her to lose her title without doing a job or it was a real injury. Fans thought it was real.

Sonjay Dutt has signed a deal with Impact. He’s been tight with Jeff Jarrett for some time so that’s not a surprise. He had spent a week as a guest instructor for WWE at the Performance Center and also worked the ROH show in New York last month.

Jonathan Gresham has signed with ROH.

The three biggest events this weekend are tomorrow night’s Reyes del Aire match at Arena Mexico, Saturday’s UFC 210 which is followed about two hours later by New Japan’s Sakura Genesis show, which is the company’s biggest event since the Tokyo Dome show. WWE will be doing lots of roster changes on Monday and Tuesday and we’ve got a lot about that in the new Observer.

The WWE Network has added a lot of 1981 and 1982 Mid South Wrestling shows, including a stream of them in a row so they can be viewed in context. They’ve also posted old episodes of Tuesday Night Titans, 1997 episodes of ECW that build up the Barely Legal PPV, and older episodes of NXT.

The WWE will be releasing a three disc DVD called “Kurt Angle: The Essential Collection” this summer according to Wrestling DVD Network. It will feature Angle matches with Steve Austin, The Rock, John Cena, Edge, Shawn Michaels, HHH and others.

WRESTLING OBSERVER NEWSLETTER: April 3, 2017: Massive WrestleMania weekend preview, plus tons of news

Your guide to WrestleMania is the focus of the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

The issue runs down the key matches, keys to what to look for, unique crowd reactions expected, the plight of Roman Reigns as the new face of the company, how booing top babyfaces is not unique to WWE today and why you have to look at business numbers and not who gets cheered and booed, plus a look at the public interest level in the top six singles matches on the show and what has the most and least interest generally.

Have a look in depth at the legacy inductees into the WWE Hall of Fame, including just how big a name Rikidozan was in his prime in Japan, the amazing television ratings he did, the most-watched live pro wrestling match anywhere in the world in history, the backgrounds of the inductees and with June Byers, the story behind one of most legendary pro wrestling matches of all-time, the 1954 world women’s title unification match which was a completely legitimate shoot.

There is an update on Mauro Ranallo and his disappearance from WWE with a filled in the time line of what happened, why Ranallo’s close friend Bas Rutten pretty much points the finger at JBL, how it’s been handled and why it puts WWE in a tough situation as well as the Be a Star group.

Notes on a major business deal made by WWE, SummerSlam ticket sales, WrestleMania available in China, Hardys arrival, the inevitable changes in the UK market, Alberto & Paige getting married, Paige talks about her embarrassing situation, WWE star reportedly on the way out, Shawn Michaels talks about his offer to face A.J.

TUESDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE

  • While things are still pretty vague, WWE.com has revealed some details about the “superstar shake-up” that was announced for next week on Monday night. • Diamond Dallas Page appeared on the Dan Le Batard show today on ESPN Radio and got mad when Le Batard kept asking about real life arguments DDP had with Ric Flair and Scott Steiner. • SB Nation writer Charlotte Wilder watched wrestling for the first time during WrestleMania 33 and wrote about the entire experience.
  • The Hardys appeared on Raw Talk for an interview last night and there were no signs of their “Broken” characters. Matt Hardy tweeted on Tuesday: “The sheer NIRVANA of coming home to that DEAFENING ovation at #Wrestlemania seems to have contained my CONDISHTION. If it CAN be contained.”
  • The New England Patriots reportedly gave Rob Gronkowski permission to get involved with the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania 33.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

We have notes on the network number. The number of paid was slightly above what I had listed to be a success based on last year’s growth patterns. Even with all the push to get former subscribers to subscribe free, that number was down. The stock fell 37 cents per share today to $21.85, which is still a strong number historically, way up from the same period last year. Overall the company is a very stable business which will increase in profitability this year and continue to do so unless something bad happens to the TV rights market, which is possible, or they reach WCW levels of acumen on the television product, which I seriously doubt can happen.

Nothing on newcomers although some of the losers on Saturday night’s Takeover show are expected to be brought up today and tomorrow, and Finn Balor should be returning imminently. Since there is a several week break, they aren’t pressed to put together new matches and programs tonight and tomorrow, but there should be a semblance of them. Raw, since it has the next PPV, should be creating more new directions than Smackdown this week.

There was a ton of mainstream media regarding WrestleMania, with John Cena & Nikki Bella talking their engagement on The Today Show this morning. Cena claimed only one person knew in advance and Nikki claimed to have no idea it was coming. Well, it was out of nowhere with absolutely no television build or hints.

Impact has inked a television deal with Game TV in Canada to air the shows in the same time slot as on Pop TV in the U.S., at 8 P.M. Eastern on Thursday nights. Game TV is in 9.5 million homes, which is in more homes than The Fight Network, which Anthem owns. Impact will also remain airing at the same time on The Fight Network.

Bellator has announced a partnership with Monster Energy and NASCAR where they will present live fights as pre-race activities at the venues. The first show of the new deal will be on 5/20 at the Monster Energy All-Star race in Charlotte and second will be at the BASS Pro Shops NRA Night Race in Bristol, TN on 8/19.

WWE

  • Undertaker’s gear stayed in the ring for about 45 minutes after the show before it was cleaned up and the ring was taken down.
  • This is the trailer for a documentary that Dave Lagana was working on with Drew Galloway this past week. It shows him going from show-to-show and I believe will have some of his talks that led to his inking his new WWE deal.
  • Galloway will be allowed to finish up his bookings as he’s on the 4/22 and 4/23 Evolve shows, facing Zack Sabre Jr. on the first night in Queens and Matt Riddle in an I Quit match on 4/23 in Brooklyn.
  • This week’s wrestling quiz concerns Undertaker.

UFC

  • The UFC has confirmed Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone will happen on 7/8 in Las Vegas.
  • UFC has named Duncan French at the new Vice President of Performance at the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas. French has more than 20 years coaching athletes at every level, including the Olympic level. He will be advising UFC fighters on nutrition, strength & conditioning and physical therapy. He served that role at Notre Dame University previously as well as the English Institute of Sport helping the British Olympic team, notably the basketball and Tae Kwon Do teams.
  • A fight between Rafael dos Anjos, the former lightweight champion moving up a division to welterweight, against Tarec Saffiedine, has been added as one of the key fights on a 6/17 show in Singapore.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • The bill changing regulations on pro wrestling in Arkansas passed 79-2 in the state House of Representatives. The new law means that any show in Arkansas that gives 20 percent of its gate to charity will no longer be regulated. In addition, if a show draws 1,500 fans or less, they are not required to have an ambulance at the event and the promoter doesn’t have to post a surety bond. The bond, in theory, means that if a promoter doesn’t pay talent, the money comes from the bond he’s posted to get his promoters license. In theory, historically, this hasn’t always been the case. The WWE would likely become the only promotion in the state that would still be subject to full regulations. In theory, this should lead to more independent shows in the state.
  • Hoosier Pro Wrestling from Saturday night in Columbus, IN before a full house: Kenny Kage b Scarecrow Eddie Felson to win the cruiserweight title, JKO b Doink, Troy Van Zant b Clint Poe-DQ, Cooter b Drax O’Brien to win the Tri States title, Dave the Rave b Kid Thunder,Vic the Bruiser b Flash Flanagan, TJ Kemp b Marc Houston to win the heavyweight title. Next show is 5/6. (thanks to Jerry Wilson)
  • Last week’s episode of the ABC TV show “The Goldberg’s” which is set in the 1980s and has had references many times to pro wrestling, featured a shot in the main character’s bedroom of an old Hillbilly Jim action figure. (thanks to Joe Puccio)
  • Best of the World returned to TV in Fresno on KAIL TV 53 yesterday with: Sheik Khan Abadi b RJ Cruz, Reno Scum b Midnight Marvels, Eli Drake b Funnybone. Next taping is 4/15 in Merced, CA at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Hall with Joey Ryan vs. Funnybone.
  • Former pro wrestler Stan “Big K” Kowalski (Bert Smith), a honored veteran who is 90 years old, will be raising the American flag in the outfield prior to the start of the 5/5 Minnesota Twins baseball game.
  • NWL Kansas City from Saturday night in Kansas City: The Howletts b Shane & Bradley, Thor Theriot b Ken Dharma, Swoll Patrol b The End, Jeremy Wyatt b Kyle O’Reilly, Ray Briggs b Chad Barstow, Royal Blood b Niles Plonk & Belvedere, Dakota Draper b Blaine Meeks to become the NWL Kansas City champion. (thanks to Brian Hoops)
  • Rush & Atlantis & La Mascara vs. Volador Jr. & Marco Corleone & Maximo Sexy in one of those parejas incredibles match, as well as a singles rematch of Pierroth vs. Diamante Azul, headlines Puebla tonight which airs on the CMLL YouTube channel.
  • Jeff Jarrett talks about his plans for TNA and Global Force Wrestling to merge.

We’re looking for reports on any of the events in Orlando that have taken place over the past few days with the exception of the Evolve, ROH & NXT shows to [email protected].

We’re also taking polls this week on WrestleMania, NXT Takeover and ROH Supercard of Honor, so you can send a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle on all three shows to [email protected].

Regarding WrestleMania, we’ve got a preview in the current issue of the Observer regarding each match so will just update the match-by-match with betting odds. Keep in mind that even with long odds in many matches, that’s based on just expectations from news out, like logic is that Lesnar is winning given next year’s Mania plans but the real smart money hasn’t come in strong based on close odds in a few matches.

PRESHOW STARTS AT 5 P.M. EASTERN TIME

With only two pre-show matches, the first hour of the show may be just talking since they will be going live for one hour on the USA Network at 6 p.m. Eastern.

  • Andre the Giant Battle Royal — As noted, a few NXT names including Killian Dain and Tian Bing have been added. Bing is in it because of WrestleMania airing in China on iPPV this year. Dain was likely picked because of his size. The two betting favorites have been Sami Zayn at -125 and Braun Strowman at -110. With odds that close, that seems to indicate smart money isn’t in, but there has been a lot of betting movement toward Zayn.
  • Neville vs. Austin Aries for the NXT title — Neville is a -1750 favorite at +950.

PPV AT 7 P.M. EASTERN

  • Brock Lesnar is -3250 and Bill Goldberg is +1350.
  • Roman Reigns is -900 and Undertaker is +675.
  • Randy Orton is -750 and Bray Wyatt is +450.
  • John Cena & Nikki Bella at -1975 and Miz & Maryse are +975.
  • Seth Rollins is -1750 and HHH is +850.
  • A.J. Styles is -1625 and Shane McMahon is +775.
  • Bayley is -1500 to keep the women’s title with Sasha Banks and Charlotte both +1400 and Nia Jax +5500.
  • Kevin Owens is a -1750 favorite in the U.S. title match with Chris Jericho at +850.
  • Baron Corbin is -1750 to get his hand raised as a major favorite over Dean Ambrose at +850.
  • In the Raw ladder match, Enzo & Cass are favored at -175, with Gallows & Anderson at +168 and Sheamus & Cesaro at +1100.
  • Smackdown women’s title: Naomi is a -420 winner to win the title. Carmella is +320, Alexa Bliss, Becky Lynch and Mickie James are +9500 and Natalya is +13500.

Raw is Monday night from the Amway Arena in Orlando. The show is usually the most talked about and most-watched Raw of the year. The expectation is there will be a few debuts on both Monday and Tuesday.

NEW JAPAN AT TOKYO KORAKUEN HALL ON TUESDAY AT 5:30 A.M. EASTERN TIME ON NEW JAPAN WORLD

  • Manabu Nakanishi & Jushin Liger & Hirai Kawato vs. Takashi Iizuka & Desperado & Taka Michinoku

  • Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima & Tiger ask vs. War Machine & David Finlay

  • Tomohiro Ishii & Baretta vs. Kenny Omega & Bad Luck Fale
  • Juice Robinson & Kushida vs. Tetsuya Naito & Hiromu Takahashi

WON BACK ISSUE: March 6, 2000: WWF No Way Out review, Mick Foley retires, more

Unlike most other wrestlers of similar fame, to do a career retrospective on Mick Foley is best saved for an examination probably years down the road. He was the classic overachiever, who defied all the odds, and was possibly the single greatest influence inside the ring on styles changing in the business of the past ten years. In a career destined, because he wasn’t that great athletically and didn’t have what was believed to be the right look and physique, for being mid-card for life, he ended up when his career came to a close, as one of the five biggest stars in North America, and even as a best-selling author…

SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight with Wrestling Observer Radio covering WrestleMania. You can send e-mail questions regarding topics related to news over the past few days to [email protected]. We’ve done shows every night from Thursday and will continue through tomorrow night after Raw.

The second hour of the WrestleMania pregame show airs live at 6 p.m. on the USA Network.

There are a bunch of places including Leo Vegas, 32 Red and Unibet who are posting odds on what match will get the most stars in the Observer on Wednesday. I have nothing to do with this. In fact, I wasn’t even aware of this until yesterday. As of this morning, these are those odds:

  • Neville vs. Aries +150
  • Andre the Giant Battle Royal +2500
  • Bliss vs. Lynch vs. Naomi vs. Natalya vs James vs. Carmella +2500
  • Ambrose vs. Corbin +800
  • Raw tag title ladder match +1200
  • Bayley vs. Charlotte vs. Banks vs. Jax +250
  • Styles vs. Shane McMahon +1000
  • Jericho vs. Owens +150
  • Cena & Nikki vs. Miz & Maryse +1500
  • Rollins vs. HHH +500
  • Orton vs. Wyatt +800
  • Goldberg vs. Lesnar +1500
  • Undertaker vs. Reigns +500
  • Whether or not there will be a five-star match on the show +1500

The HHH vs. Seth Rollins match figures to have interference from Samoa Joe, plus Stephanie McMahon will be in HHH’s corner and she’s said so publicly on ESPN last night and will also be part of an elaborate ring entrance. There is certainly talk of Mick Foley being involved with this. It’s notable that Foley’s hip replacement surgery was held off until after this show and him costing HHH the match makes storyline sense.

Yesterday’s biggest surprise news involved Drew Galloway, back as Drew McIntyre, signing. This was said to have been a late put together deal as Galloway was scheduled in the main event of the WWN Super Show in a six-way title match and had to be “injured” early in the show and left. Matt Riddle won the WWN title which was the guy I had expected to win. McIntyre will be in NXT, not WWE, likely as they are looking for some potential singles main events to replace Shinsuke Nakamura. We talked a lot about Galloway and Jim Ross on the show we did last night and how these moves are U.K. market related. The indication we were given is Galloway will be able to drop the What Culture title in the ring, but Galloway was the key guy in plans for a number of different U.K. groups.

Jim Ross will be on the broadcast tonight. He has publicly said his contract talks with WWE went back a few months. We’ll have more on that in the new issue.

WWE

  • Stephan Amell and Rob Gronkowski are in town for WrestleMania.
  • ESPN is doing heavy coverage of WrestleMania all day long.
  • After Takeover went off the air, there was an in-ring deal for the fans in Orlando basically with Nakamura thanking everyone and giving the indication he’s leaving. He will be doing NXT house shows at least through the U.K. tour in May.
  • Paul Heyman has been heavily pushing Charlotte Flair all week as a new superstar and that she could main event a WrestleMania.
  • Jim Ross talks to David Penzer regarding if he’ll announce at WrestleMania 33, his thoughts on WrestleMania’s buildup, why TNA did not work under it’s old management and what new management is going to do to save the company.
  • Alexa Bliss is interviewed about tonight’s show.

WRESTLING OBSERVER NEWSLETTER: April 3, 2017: Massive Wrestlemania weekend preview, plus tons of news

With WrestleMania coming up on 4/2 in Orlando as part of the biggest weekend of pro wrestling events, as far as pure volume goes, ever in the U.S., this year, more than any other, it has been the name more than the combination of the parts.

There really isn’t the one giant main event, or two, like most years have. Brock Lesnar vs. Bill Goldberg was counted on as the main event dating back to when the program was first put together late last year. It’s not like the angle is cold because it’s not. Goldberg’s interviews have been stronger than anyone could have expected, and his impact and popularity hasn’t seemed to fizzle. Sure, his winning the title from Kevin Owens was sure to draw a few boos. But in Philadelphia, a city where if people were going to turn on him, that would be the place, while mentions of him to the live crowd drew boos, when he actually came out, it was the loudest chants of the night…
